Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before downloading anything, record:
- Which program, service, or shortcut displays the error. Note the executable name if Windows shows one.
- When the error appears. Does it happen at startup, when opening an enterprise-management console, after an antivirus scan, or after uninstalling software?
- Whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not assume that any file named
cba.dllis compatible with your program. - Where Windows finds the file. Its folder, digital signature, and surrounding files often identify the parent product.
- Whether the computer previously had LANDesk, Ivanti Endpoint Manager, or older Symantec software.
The safest repair is usually to restore the application that installed cba.dll, not to copy a replacement into System32.
What is cba.dll?
cba.dll is a real legacy Windows library whose internal description is CBA Interface Library. It is associated with the Intel LANDesk Common Base Agent, a component used by LANDesk Software, later Ivanti, and some older Symantec products.
The historical Intel name can be misleading. This is not established as a core Microsoft Windows DLL, an Intel graphics or chipset driver, a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Some copies may have been installed under C:WindowsSystem32, but that location alone does not make the file part of Windows.
Ivanti Endpoint Manager file inventories include cba.dll with other Common Base Agent files, including cba8inst.msi, cba8cleanup.exe, cbaxfr.dll, and CBA8Interface.dll. That pattern is important: cba.dll normally arrives as part of a larger product installation rather than as a standalone runtime.

Older Symantec products also used Intel LANDesk CBA components. If the error began after removing or upgrading Symantec System Center, Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, LANDesk, or Ivanti software, a leftover service or incomplete installation is a strong possibility.
The fastest safe fix: repair the parent application
1. Find the installed product
Open the installed-program list:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for:
- LANDesk
- Ivanti
- Endpoint Manager
- Common Base Agent
- Symantec System Center
- Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition
- Select the matching application and look for Advanced options, Modify, Repair, or Uninstall.
Not every older enterprise product exposes a Repair button in Windows Settings. If Repair is unavailable, use the original installation media, deployment package, or network installer. On a company-managed computer, ask IT for the approved package rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
2. Run the product repair
If the installer offers Repair, choose it and allow the operation to finish. If it offers Modify, ensure that the Common Base Agent or related management component is selected.
If the program is still listed but its installer is missing:

- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair or reinstall the affected component.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that previously displayed the error.
A successful repair normally means that the application opens without the loader message and that its associated service starts normally. If the same error returns, continue by identifying the exact executable requesting the file. The visible program may only be a shortcut or launcher.
Verify the existing cba.dll before restoring it
A file can exist while still being the wrong version, damaged, unsigned, or located where a malicious program placed it.
Check the file location
Open File Explorer and inspect any copies found in:
- The folder of the affected application
- A LANDesk or Ivanti program directory
- A Symantec program directory
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
A copy in an application or vendor directory is more useful evidence than a copy found in an unrelated temporary folder. Do not delete any copy yet.

- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
where /r C: cba.dll
This may take some time. Record every path returned. Multiple copies are not automatically proof of infection, but they make it especially important to determine which program is loading which copy.
Check Details and Digital Signatures
For each relevant copy:
- Right-click
cba.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Confirm that the description is consistent with CBA Interface Library.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
Publisher information can vary between historical copies. Some records identify LANDesk Software as the product publisher, while Symantec-related copies may carry a Symantec signature. The Intel Common Base Agent name is historical product context, not proof that every copy was directly shipped by Intel.
Treat a file as suspicious when it is:
- In a random user profile or temporary folder
- Unsigned when the original installation should have supplied a signed file
- Reported as having an invalid signature
- Recently created without a corresponding software installation
- Detected by Microsoft Defender or another security product
Do not restore a suspicious file simply because an application requests the filename.
If antivirus quarantined cba.dll
A security product may remove or quarantine a legitimate legacy library, particularly after an update or a scan of old enterprise software. It may also correctly detect a malicious file using the same name.
Check Microsoft Defender’s record:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
cba.dll. - Note the exact file path, detection name, and action taken.
Microsoft documents Protection History and quarantine restoration in its Windows Security guidance. Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The path belongs to the known LANDesk, Ivanti, or Symantec installation.
- The file’s Properties information matches the parent product.
- Its digital signature is valid or its origin is confirmed by the product administrator.
- The original installer is trusted.
- A full scan does not identify related suspicious files.
If the file is a genuine false positive, update Microsoft Defender and the parent application, then reinstall the parent product from approved media. Do not turn off antivirus protection merely to force an application to start.
If the detection is unclear, leave the file quarantined and contact the administrator responsible for the software. A missing application component is safer than executing an unverified DLL.
Reinstall an incomplete or partially removed product
A common pattern is that LANDesk, Ivanti, or Symantec software was removed incompletely. The main application may be gone, but a Windows service, scheduled task, startup item, or shortcut still attempts to load cba.dll.

You have two safe choices.
If the product is still needed
Reinstall it using the matching installer:
- Close the affected application.
- Stop any related management console or agent if it is running.
- Run the original installer as administrator.
- Select Repair, Modify, or a complete reinstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application and any related service.
Use the same product family and release supplied by your organization. Do not combine cba.dll from one LANDesk, Ivanti, or Symantec release with files from another.
If the product is obsolete and no longer needed
Do not replace the missing DLL just to keep an obsolete startup entry alive.
- Back up any required configuration or management data.
- Uninstall the product from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager → Startup apps for leftover entries.
- Check Services for a service clearly belonging to the removed product.
- Disable or remove leftover entries only after confirming that the product is no longer required.
- Restart and verify that the error no longer appears.
On a managed computer, do not remove an agent or service without approval. An apparently obsolete LANDesk or Symantec component may still be part of an organization’s deployment system.
Identify the application or service that is actually requesting the file
If reinstalling the obvious program does not help, the requester may be a background process.

- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the
cba.dllmessage. - Note the application name, service name, and executable path.
If the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing, the application may be searching a different directory. If the message says the module is present but cannot load, the cause may instead be an incompatible architecture, a missing dependency, or an invalid export.
Process Monitor can provide more detailed file-loading evidence, but it is best used by an administrator familiar with filtering for cba.dll and interpreting NAME NOT FOUND, BAD IMAGE, and access-denied results.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Public file records describe some copies of cba.dll as Win32, but there is no authoritative universal architecture specification for every release. Do not assume that a file with the correct name will work in every application.
A 32-bit application generally needs the matching 32-bit library and dependencies. A 64-bit application generally needs a compatible 64-bit build where the product supplies one. Copying a file between System32 and SysWOW64 is not a reliable architecture fix. Those folders have specific Windows loader behavior, and manually moving a DLL can make diagnosis harder.
Architecture problems often produce messages such as:
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “Bad image.”
The correct solution is to run the installer that matches the affected product and release. If only an old 32-bit enterprise application needs the file, reinstall that application rather than trying to convert it into a 64-bit installation.
Repair Windows components only when broader corruption exists
cba.dll is not established as a protected Windows system component. Therefore, SFC and DISM are secondary steps, not the primary repair for this file.
Use them when you also see Windows instability, damaged system applications, failed servicing, or other unrelated system-file errors.

cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the affected application.
If DISM reports that it could not repair the component store, install pending Windows updates and restart. Then run the commands again. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the affected application. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove that a third-party cba.dll is correct.
Repeating SFC and DISM without identifying the parent application will not normally reconstruct a vendor DLL.
When manually tracking system corruption becomes repetitive, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for this case. When cba.dll belongs to a specific application, repairing or reinstalling that application remains the definitive fix.
Update drivers only when the error points to a driver package
cba.dll is not normally repaired through Device Manager. Device Manager is relevant only if the requesting software is an installed hardware-management package and its own setup program includes the Common Base Agent.

- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update driver only when the hardware vendor or administrator directs you to do so.
Do not expect a generic display, network, chipset, or audio driver update to supply cba.dll. This file is tied to application and management software, not established as a standard Windows hardware driver component.
If you are manually comparing many hardware-driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan showing which drivers it identifies; installing drivers requires the full version, and it is optional. For a cba.dll error, the parent product’s installer is still the correct source.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point named DllRegisterServer. It does not download, repair, replace, or validate arbitrary libraries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no established evidence that cba.dll is an ActiveX control or self-registering COM server. Therefore, this is not an appropriate first-line command:
regsvr32 cba.dll
It may produce:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That result usually means the DLL is not designed to be registered this way. Use regsvr32 only when the product’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register this exact file and provides the correct path and architecture-specific command.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download cba.dll from a random DLL website or copy a file from another computer.
That approach can introduce:
- Malware using a familiar filename
- The wrong product release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing dependent libraries
- Incorrect exports
- An invalid or absent digital signature
- A stale file that keeps the original installation broken
It can also create a side-by-side version conflict. Windows may load a different copy from the application directory, system directory, or another search path, so copying one file may not change the failing load at all.
The safe sources are the original LANDesk or Ivanti deployment package, the original legacy Symantec installer when applicable, or an administrator-provided installation image. For Windows repair commands, use Microsoft’s documentation rather than a third-party script.
Try System Restore when the timing is clear
System Restore is reasonable if the error began immediately after installing, upgrading, or removing the parent product and a restore point predates that change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Select a restore point created before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal documents. If no suitable restore point exists, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent application.
Frequently asked questions
Is cba.dll part of Windows?
It is not established as a Microsoft Windows component. It is associated with the historical Intel LANDesk Common Base Agent and with LANDesk, Ivanti, and older Symantec software.
Is cba.dll an Intel graphics or chipset driver?
Not based on the available product identity. The Intel name refers to the historical Common Base Agent product name, not necessarily to a modern Intel hardware driver.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not by default. No reliable evidence ties this specific DLL to those runtimes. Install a runtime only when the parent application’s official requirements identify it.
The file exists, so why does Windows still say it is missing?
The application may be loading another copy, using the wrong architecture, lacking a dependency, or failing to access the file. Check the executable named in the error, the file path, the signature, and the application’s logs.
What does “cba.dll is not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It can indicate a damaged file, incompatible architecture, mismatched product version, or missing dependency. Reinstall the matching parent product rather than replacing the DLL by filename alone.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I place cba.dll in System32?
Do not do this as a first-line fix. A third-party DLL may need to remain in the application’s own directory and may depend on other files installed beside it.
What if the original software is no longer supported?
If it is not needed, uninstall it properly and remove only confirmed leftover startup or service references. If it is still required, obtain a supported migration or deployment package from your organization or the vendor. Do not build a replacement installation from random DLL copies.
What if Microsoft Defender says the file is malware?
Keep it quarantined until its path, signature, and parent installation are verified. Run a full scan and reinstall the parent application from trusted media if the file was legitimate. A filename alone is not proof of safety.
