What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If occ.dll is missing, Windows is usually unable to start the older application that owns or expects the file. Start by identifying that application before downloading or copying anything.
Quick diagnostic checklist
Write down these details from the error and the affected computer:
- Which program or game displays the error
- Whether the error appears during Windows startup or only when launching that program
- Whether it started after an update, reinstall, cleanup, antivirus detection, or disk repair
- Whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The full error wording, such as “occ.dll was not found” or “The specified module could not be found”
- The folder where the application is installed
- Whether Windows Security recently quarantined a file
The most likely solution is to repair or reinstall the affected application using its original installer or the vendor’s current installer. Do not begin by downloading a loose DLL.
What is occ.dll?
occ.dll is associated with an older Microsoft Visual Studio component named Microsoft(R) Visual C++ ActiveX Control Containment Component. ActiveX control containment allowed applications to embed and manage ActiveX controls. Visual C++ and Visual Basic applications could act as containers for these controls.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
The best-documented Microsoft variant is a legacy, 32-bit Visual C++ component. It is not normally a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file, and it should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The filename is not a unique identity. Other software can use a module named occ.dll, including applications built around Open Cascade. Therefore, the filename alone does not prove that the file belongs to Microsoft Visual Studio.
A Microsoft-associated copy should identify Microsoft Corporation as the company and Microsoft Visual Studio as the product. Older file catalogs report a particular x86 build and file size, but those details are not a current Microsoft package manifest. Use the file’s properties, location, and parent application to establish whether your copy is appropriate.
Identify the program and the copy of occ.dll
Before repairing Windows, determine which application is actually failing.
Find the parent program
- Reproduce the error.
- Record the executable or application name shown in the message.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the affected program if it remains open.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
If the program closes immediately, search the Start menu for it, right-click the shortcut, select More, and choose Open file location. Right-click the shortcut again, select Properties, and inspect the Target field.
Inspect the DLL if it exists
Search the application’s installation folder for occ.dll. If you find it:
- Right-click
occ.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check Company, Product name, File description, and File version.
- Open the General tab and note the full location.
A copy inside the application’s own folder may be a private dependency supplied by that program. A copy in a temporary folder, an unexpected download folder, or a random system directory deserves additional scrutiny.
Do not trust a matching filename by itself. A Microsoft-looking description in an unrelated folder does not establish that the file is safe or compatible.
Fix 1: Repair the affected application
Repair is the fastest and safest fix when the application installer supports it.
Repair through Windows 11 Settings
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program that displays the
occ.dllerror. - Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option normally preserves the application’s settings and personal data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.

Repair through Control Panel
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the affected program in Programs and Features.
- Right-click it.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
If no Repair option exists, uninstall the application and reinstall it from its original media or the software vendor’s official installer. For an old Visual Studio-era application, keep its installer, patches, and documented prerequisites together before removing the existing copy.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The application opens without the
occ.dllmessage - The file is restored to the application’s installation directory
- The program’s main functions work normally
- Windows does not immediately quarantine the restored file
If the program still fails, do not copy a different occ.dll into its folder. Continue with the checks below.
Fix 2: Verify or reinstall a game
If the error comes from a game, use the game launcher’s file-repair feature before performing a Windows repair.
Common menu names include:
- Verify
- Verify integrity
- Scan and repair
- Repair
- Check files
Open the launcher, select the game’s library entry, open its settings or three-dot menu, and choose the verification option. The exact location depends on the launcher.
The launcher should compare the installation with its official files and restore missing or damaged files. Restart the launcher and test the game after the scan completes.
If verification does not help:
- Uninstall the game from the launcher or Windows.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the game again from the official launcher.
- Run the game before adding mods or third-party overlays.
If only one game reports occ.dll, the game’s installer remains the definitive repair source. A current Visual C++ package is not guaranteed to contain this older file.

Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product may have removed a private copy of occ.dll.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
occ.dll. - Expand the event and inspect the detected file’s path and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- It came from the application’s legitimate installation folder
- The application was installed from an official source
- The publisher and file details are consistent with the program
- You are confident the detection is a false positive
If the file came from a temporary directory or an unknown source, do not restore it. Reinstall the parent application instead and allow the antivirus product to rescan the clean installation.
If the same file is repeatedly quarantined, leave it quarantined and contact the application vendor. A missing-file message does not prove that the quarantined file was safe.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The known Microsoft occ.dll variant is 32-bit. A 32-bit application can use 32-bit dependencies on 64-bit Windows, but a 64-bit executable cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
This can produce messages such as:
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
- “The specified module could not be found”
- “Bad image”
To check the application architecture:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Right-click its main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and inspect the product information.
- If the program documentation or installer identifies it as x86 or 32-bit, use its 32-bit package and dependencies.
On 64-bit Windows, do not assume that installing only an x64 runtime will satisfy a 32-bit program. Microsoft’s current Visual C++ redistributable downloads include separate x86, x64, and ARM64 packages. If the application documentation calls for a Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable, install the architecture it requires from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Microsoft’s current v14 redistributable is intended for applications built with Visual Studio 2015 through 2022. That compatibility statement does not establish that it installs the older occ.dll component. Do not remove older redistributable versions merely because a newer one is installed.
Fix 5: Repair missing dependencies
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that occ.dll itself is absent. Windows may find occ.dll but fail to load one of its dependent DLLs.
Check these locations:
- The application’s own folder
- A folder installed with the application
- A documented Visual Studio or runtime directory
- Windows Security’s quarantine history
- The application’s installer logs
Do not move DLLs between applications. Do not rename an x64 DLL to make it appear compatible with a 32-bit program.
If the program installer lists prerequisites, reinstall those prerequisites using the installer supplied by the application vendor or Microsoft. Restart Windows after installing them, then test the program again.
If only this application fails, focus on its installer. If several unrelated applications fail with similar messages, continue to the Windows component checks.
Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates
Windows updates will not normally install a private legacy occ.dll, but they can repair operating-system components and compatibility issues around the failing application.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional update is offered.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Test the affected program after updating. If the same application still reports occ.dll, repair or reinstall that application rather than repeatedly checking for Windows updates.
Fix 7: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is showing multiple problems, such as broken built-in apps, failed updates, damaged system features, or errors across unrelated programs. occ.dll is not established as a protected Windows system file, so SFC is unlikely to restore this private legacy component directly.

Run DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. SFC checks and replaces protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling the application that originally supplied occ.dll.
When this manual process leaves you hunting through logs and repeating scans without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required when reinstalling the affected application is the definitive fix.

Some older applications require an optional Windows component, but enabling random features will not reliably restore occ.dll.
To inspect optional components:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the list in Windows Features.
- Enable only a feature named in the application’s documentation or installer.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable legacy features simply because the file is associated with old Visual C++ software. If the installer specifically requests a Windows feature, enable it, reinstall or repair the application, and test again.
Fix 9: Update drivers only when the failure began after a hardware or system change
A graphics or chipset driver is not the normal source of occ.dll, but a driver or system change can expose compatibility problems in an old application.
Use Device Manager only for the device related to the failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a recent driver problem, right-click the device, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available.
Manually checking hardware vendors and matching driver packages can mean hunting through versions and guessing which of several drivers is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it cannot replace repairing the application that owns occ.dll.
Why you should not use regsvr32 automatically
Do not run regsvr32 occ.dll merely because the filename ends in .dll.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A runtime or containment DLL may simply be loaded privately by its application and may not support registration. Registering an unrelated or damaged file can produce another error without fixing the original problem.

Use registration only when the application vendor explicitly instructs you to do so and the correct DLL is known to export the required registration function. Microsoft documents the purpose of regsvr32 in its regsvr32 command documentation.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download occ.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into:

C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The application folder without identifying the correct build
That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, create version collisions, or leave the actual missing dependency unresolved. It can also make later application repairs harder to diagnose.
Use these sources instead:
- The original installer for the affected application
- The application vendor’s current installer
- Microsoft’s official Visual C++ redistributable page when the application specifically requires that runtime
- Windows Update for operating-system components
Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after a driver installation, software installation, update, or other system change.

When the legacy application may be incompatible
Visual Studio 6.0-era software is unsupported legacy software. An application can have the correct occ.dll and still fail because it depends on obsolete installers, old ActiveX controls, outdated drivers, or behavior that modern Windows no longer supports.
If repair and reinstall do not work:
- Check the application vendor’s support documentation.
- Install the vendor’s latest compatible release.
- Review the installer log for a missing dependent DLL.
- Check Event Viewer for application errors.
- Review Windows Security’s protection history.
- Test the program with its documented compatibility settings.
- Avoid replacing unrelated Windows DLLs.
If the software is business-critical, isolate the old application in a supported environment approved by its vendor rather than weakening Windows security or downloading individual system files.
FAQ
Is occ.dll a Microsoft file?
A documented Microsoft variant is part of the old Visual C++ ActiveX Control Containment Component associated with Microsoft Visual Studio. The filename is not unique, so another application may use a different occ.dll.
Does Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable install occ.dll?
No current Microsoft redistributable package is confirmed to install this particular legacy file. Install the redistributable only when the affected application requires it, and repair the parent application first.
Should I copy occ.dll into System32?
No. The known Microsoft variant is 32-bit and is not normally a Windows system component. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can cause conflicts and does not address missing dependencies.
Should I install both x86 and x64 runtimes?
Install the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit application needs 32-bit dependencies even on 64-bit Windows. Do not install unrelated packages just to make the error disappear.
Why does Windows say “The specified module could not be found” when occ.dll exists?
The message can refer to a dependency of occ.dll, not only to the named file. Repair the parent application and its documented prerequisites, then inspect installer and Event Viewer logs if the error remains.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan SFC restore occ.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while occ.dll is generally associated with a legacy application or Visual Studio component. Use SFC for broader Windows corruption, not as the primary repair for one application’s missing DLL.
Do I need to register occ.dll?
Usually not. Register it only when the application vendor specifically requires registration and the file supports the required registration entry point.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the program named in the error, verify the file’s location and metadata, then repair or reinstall that program from its original or official vendor installer.
