devxpgl.dll is a legacy Microsoft Developer Studio Explorer Shell Extensions file associated with Microsoft Visual Studio. If Windows reports that devxpgl.dll is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair the old application that supplied it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The most reliable solution is to identify the program that expects the file and reinstall or repair that complete program from genuine installation media. devxpgl.dll is not normally a Windows system file, so copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not a proper repair.
What is devxpgl.dll?
The file is identified as:
| Property | Identification |
|---|---|
| File | devxpgl.dll |
| Description | Microsoft(R) Developer Studio Explorer Shell Extensions |
| Product association | Microsoft (R) Visual Studio |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Likely role | Legacy Developer Studio shell-extension component |
| Architecture | Public file inventories identify it as 32-bit |
| Windows status | Not a normal Windows system DLL |
The description indicates that the DLL belongs to the older Developer Studio and Visual Studio 6-era environment. It may be loaded by Explorer or another host process as part of shell integration. Microsoft explains how shell extensions operate in Working with Shell Extensions, but that documentation does not specifically confirm every internal detail of devxpgl.dll.
Some public inventories associate the file with Visual Studio 6-era software and commonly display a version and size. Treat those details only as identification clues, not as a universal specification. The correct copy depends on the original product, installation media, service level, and application that requested it.

Visual Studio 6.0 is obsolete and out of support. Microsoft identifies Service Pack 6 as its final service pack and lists the product as having reached the end of support in September 2005. The current Visual Studio product lifecycle documentation is useful for confirming that status, but current Visual Studio installers do not automatically provide this legacy DLL.
Why the error appears
A missing-file dialog does not always mean that the file has simply been deleted. Windows may display a missing-DLL message when:
- The old Visual Studio or Developer Studio installation was removed.
- A legacy application was incompletely uninstalled.
- An application folder was moved or restored from a backup.
- Disk cleanup removed part of an old installation.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The DLL exists, but another dependency is missing.
- A 32-bit application is being run with files from the wrong version or architecture.
- The file is damaged or incompatible with the application.
- A shell extension is failing while Explorer or another host process loads it.
- A third-party program included or depended on the old Developer Studio component.
Typical Windows error families include:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because devxpgl.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because devxpgl.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “devxpgl.dll was not found.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).”
- “devxpgl.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not identify one particular application that uses the file. Note the executable named in the dialog and the program you were starting. That ownership information determines the correct repair.
Before repairing anything
First record the details that will help identify the owning installation:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Write down the full error message.
- Note the application name and the executable path, if shown.
- Check whether the failure began after uninstalling Visual Studio, an old development tool, or another application.
- Check whether the problem began after antivirus activity, a backup restore, disk cleanup, or moving an application folder.
- Note whether the affected program is a 32-bit legacy application running on 64-bit Windows.
- Do not delete a remaining copy of
devxpgl.dllbefore checking its location and file properties.
A copy beside the affected program’s executable is more useful evidence than a copy in a system folder. A file path under an old Visual Studio or application directory may identify the installer that needs to be repaired.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning legacy application
This is the safest and most likely fix.
If the affected application has a repair option
- Close the affected application.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected legacy application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some older programs do not expose Repair in Windows Settings. In that case, open the program’s original setup media or installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Reinstall.
If the application provides a launcher with Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or Validate files, use that function first. It can restore the correct files and installer registration without mixing files from another release.
If Visual Studio or Developer Studio supplied the file
Use the original Visual Studio or Developer Studio installation media and run its setup program.
- Close Visual Studio, Developer Studio, and related tools.
- Insert the original installation disc or mount the trusted installation image.
- Open the installation folder.
- Right-click the setup program and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair, Reinstall, or the closest available maintenance option.
- Allow setup to restore the original files.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program that previously reported
devxpgl.dll.
If the installer does not offer repair, uninstall the damaged legacy product only after confirming that you have the original media and any required product key or installation details. Then reinstall the complete product. Do not remove individual DLLs or copy files between Visual Studio installations.
Microsoft provides a reference document for Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 6. Service Pack 6 is not proof that it contains devxpgl.dll, so do not use it as an automatic substitute for the original product installer. Apply it only when it matches the product you have installed and the application requires it.

The file may be associated with an application that used Developer Studio components without being Visual Studio itself.
Use the application’s own installer or recovery media:

- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Locate the program named in the error.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall if offered.
- If no maintenance option exists, reinstall that exact application from its original vendor media.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If you cannot identify the owner, inspect the executable path shown in the error, the application’s shortcut properties, and Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. Do not guess based only on the DLL filename.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a legacy DLL. This is especially possible when the file is old, unsigned, packed unusually, or loaded as a shell extension.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry whose path matches the legitimate Visual Studio or application installation.
- Expand the entry and review the detected file and threat information.
- Restore the file only if you have verified that it came from the genuine installation and the detection is a false positive.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is devxpgl.dll. A filename does not prove that a file is legitimate. If Protection History no longer offers Restore, reinstall the owning application from trusted media. Do not retrieve raw files from Defender’s internal quarantine directory.
After restoring a verified file, update the security product and run a scan. If the file is detected again, stop using that copy and reinstall the application instead of repeatedly overriding the detection.

Public inventories identify devxpgl.dll as a 32-bit file associated with legacy Visual Studio software. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but its files and dependencies must remain compatible.
Do not treat System32 and SysWOW64 as general-purpose DLL storage locations:
System32is the native system directory on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains many 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.- Neither directory is a safe destination for an application-owned DLL.
- A 32-bit copy is not interchangeable with a 64-bit copy.
- A DLL from a different Visual Studio release may have different dependencies or exports.
To check whether the application is old or 32-bit:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Note the application name, installation path, and compatibility settings.
- If the program has its own documentation, confirm whether it supports the current Windows release.
- Keep the application and its supporting files together in the installation directory.
If the program needs compatibility settings, try them only after reinstalling the complete application:
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the older Windows version recommended by the application documentation.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application.
Compatibility mode cannot replace missing files. If the error remains, reinstall the application and its legacy dependencies.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
devxpgl.dll is not normally a protected Windows system file, so DISM and SFC are not the usual way to restore it. They are appropriate when several unrelated Windows applications fail or Windows reports broader component corruption.
Run DISM first, then SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command should be described as a normal method for restoring an application-owned Visual Studio DLL.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process only as directed by Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance. Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance explains the DISM process.
The manual process can require repeated scans and interpretation of logs when the actual problem is an old application installer. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns devxpgl.dll.
Fix 5: Check Windows Features only when the application requires them
Windows Features do not normally install devxpgl.dll, but an old application may require a legacy Windows compatibility component.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available features.
- Enable only a feature specifically required by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to complete the change.
- Restart if prompted.
Do not enable random features because a DLL error appeared. Features such as legacy .NET components may help a particular application start, but they will not recreate an application-owned Visual Studio shell-extension file.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the wider application reports a driver problem
A graphics or device driver does not normally supply devxpgl.dll. Driver repair is relevant only if the affected program also reports graphics initialization failures, device errors, or a driver-specific dependency problem.
To check a driver:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when a compatible driver is available from Windows Update or the device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not replace devxpgl.dll because Device Manager shows a driver warning. These are separate problems unless the application documentation connects them.
Manually hunting through hardware vendors for a matching driver can mean guessing between old and current packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it will not replace the legacy application that owns devxpgl.dll.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only as a last resort
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after an uninstall or system change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not guaranteed to restore a usable Visual Studio 6 installation and may roll back unrelated software changes.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
If the problem returns, reinstall the owning product instead of repeatedly restoring the system.
What not to do
Do not download devxpgl.dll from a random DLL website
A downloaded file may have:
- The wrong version.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing dependencies.
- Different exported functions.
- A modified or malicious payload.
- No matching installer registration.
- No relationship to the application that raised the error.
Even if copying the file makes the first dialog disappear, the program may fail later because the rest of the legacy installation is missing.

Use the original Visual Studio or application media, the owning vendor’s installer, or a verified backup of the complete installation. Do not name a random DLL website as an official source.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those directories are not interchangeable repair locations. Placing an application DLL there can create conflicts, load the wrong copy into another process, and make future troubleshooting harder.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is a registration utility, not a universal missing-DLL repair command. It works only when the DLL exposes the registration entry point expected by the tool, such as DllRegisterServer.
There is no authoritative evidence that every copy of devxpgl.dll supports that entry point. Do not run:

as a standard repair, and do not use /u or /i on a manually copied file. If the original installer explicitly registers the component, rerun that installer or use its documented repair procedure. Microsoft describes the command’s scope in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not install every Visual C++ Redistributable
devxpgl.dll is not identified as a modern Visual C++ runtime file. Install a Visual C++ package only when the affected application’s documentation or a separate dependency error specifically requires it.
Installing Visual Studio 2022 or another current edition is also not guaranteed to provide this legacy file.

If the file is absent beside a legacy executable, the application installation is the strongest suspect. If the file exists but Windows says it is not designed to run on Windows, suspect a damaged file, incompatible architecture, or a missing dependency rather than immediately registering it.
Because a shell extension may load inside Explorer, a damaged extension can sometimes cause Explorer to hang or crash. If Explorer becomes unstable after an installation change, uninstall or repair the owning application from Settings → Apps, use a restore point if appropriate, and avoid manually deleting system files.

FAQ
Is devxpgl.dll part of Windows?
No credible evidence indicates that it is a standard Windows system DLL. It is associated with legacy Microsoft Developer Studio and Visual Studio software.
Which program installed devxpgl.dll?
The strongest identification points to Microsoft Developer Studio or Visual Studio 6-era software. A third-party legacy application may also have bundled or depended on the component. Identify the program named in the error before choosing a repair.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is devxpgl.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public inventories identify it as 32-bit. Keep it with the matching 32-bit application and its original dependencies. Do not use a file from another architecture or copy it into system directories.
Will current Visual Studio install the file?
Not necessarily. Current Visual Studio editions do not automatically reproduce the files from Visual Studio 6-era installations.
Should I install the Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not as a first response. Use it only when the affected application specifically requires it or reports a separate runtime dependency.
Can SFC restore devxpgl.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while devxpgl.dll is generally treated as an application-owned legacy component. Repair or reinstall the owning application first.
Should I register devxpgl.dll with regsvr32?
Only if the original installer or official application documentation explicitly requires registration. The DLL’s filename alone does not prove that it exports DllRegisterServer.
Is a copy of devxpgl.dll safe because the name matches?
No. Verify the file’s source, path, digital signature where available, and relationship to the installed application. The filename alone is not proof of legitimacy.
What is the definitive fix?
Find the application that expects the file and repair or reinstall that complete legacy product from trustworthy original media. This restores the DLL together with its dependencies and any installer-managed configuration.
