“fregshex.dll” error messages you may see
Windows or the affected FUJIFILM program may display one of these messages:
- “This application failed to start because Fregshex.dll was not found.”
- “The file Fregshex.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: Fregshex.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading Fregshex.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because Fregshex.dll is missing from your computer.”
The file name may appear as fregshex.dll, Fregshex.dll, or FREGSHEX.DLL. Windows treats those forms as the same file.
The 60-second answer
fregshex.dll is an obscure third-party Windows DLL associated with FUJIFILM software. Its internal description is Fregshave, and historical system records connect it with REGSHAVE.EXE, an older Fuji FinePix camera-software or USB-driver component.
It is not a normal Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file, or DirectX library. The safest repair is to identify the FUJIFILM application that is requesting it, then repair or reinstall that complete application from its original installer or an official FUJIFILM support source.

Do not download a loose copy of fregshex.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement can contain malware, be the wrong version or architecture, and still leave the parent application damaged. Do not copy it randomly into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
If you no longer use the old camera software, uninstalling it or removing its abandoned startup entry may be the correct fix.
What fregshex.dll belongs to
The available evidence identifies fregshex.dll as part of FUJIFILM Fregshave. Historical inventories also associate it with:
REGSHAVE.EXE- Fuji FinePix camera software
- Older FUJIFILM USB or camera-support packages
- Legacy software that may have installed under a Windows system directory
The exact FUJIFILM product and installer version that placed the DLL cannot be confirmed from current public software documentation. The current FUJIFILM software catalog focuses on newer products and does not publish a standalone fregshex.dll download.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The name Fregshave is an internal description, not a separate Windows feature. RegShave appears to have been a small component used by older Fuji camera software, probably around installation, removal, or device integration. That explains why the DLL can remain after the main camera application has been removed.
Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
The historical file record identifies the DLL as Win32. That means an old 32-bit FUJIFILM application may need the 32-bit library even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Do not install a 64-bit substitute and do not assume that placing a file in System32 will make a 32-bit program work. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit Windows components. Application DLLs should normally be installed by the application’s own installer in the location it expects.
Common causes of the error
The likely causes, in order, are:
- The FUJIFILM or FinePix installation is incomplete or damaged.
- An antivirus product quarantined the DLL.
- Camera software was partially uninstalled, leaving a startup entry behind.
- Registry-cleaning or disk-cleanup software removed part of the legacy installation.
- The software was moved to another PC without its supporting files.
- A dependency of
fregshex.dllis missing, even though the error names this DLL. - The old 32-bit application is incompatible with the current Windows installation.
- Windows components are damaged, although this is less likely for a third-party FUJIFILM DLL.
A loader message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that fregshex.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL. Reinstalling the complete parent application is therefore more useful than copying only the named file.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the DLL
Start by finding the executable that fails. The error dialog often shows its name in the title bar or in the surrounding message.
Check the installed applications list
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for:
- FUJIFILM
- FinePix
- Fuji
- RegShave
- camera software
- USB driver
- Select any matching entry and note its exact name.
- Do not uninstall it yet if you still need the camera application.
You can also open Control Panel, select Programs, then select Programs and Features. Older software may appear there but not in the newer Settings list.
Search the program folders
In File Explorer, inspect:
C:Program FilesC:Program Files (x86)C:ProgramData
Look for folders containing FUJIFILM, FinePix, Fuji, or the name shown in the error dialog. A 32-bit legacy program commonly appears under C:Program Files (x86) on 64-bit Windows.
If the error appears immediately after sign-in rather than when opening a camera application, check startup entries:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for FUJIFILM, FinePix, Fuji, RegShave, or an unknown entry pointing to an old camera-software folder.
- Right-click a clearly identified obsolete entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling startup does not remove the program. It only prevents Windows from launching the broken entry while you decide whether the software is still needed.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original FUJIFILM package
This is the most likely successful repair when the camera software is still needed.
Use an installed repair option
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the FUJIFILM or FinePix application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Not every older desktop program provides a Repair button. If there is no repair option, use Modify or Change from Control Panel:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the FUJIFILM application.
- Select Change, Modify, or Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
Reinstall from trusted FUJIFILM media
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Disconnect the camera from the PC.
- Uninstall the damaged FUJIFILM application from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Use the original camera CD, manufacturer recovery media, or an installer obtained through the camera model’s official FUJIFILM support area.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation without changing the default destination unless the installer requires it.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the camera and test the application.
The official FUJIFILM software download area may list a current replacement application rather than the legacy package that originally contained Fregshave. A current download is not proof that it includes this DLL. If the old application is essential, look for the original installer supplied with the camera or an official support download matching the camera model and Windows requirements.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The original camera application opens without the DLL message.
- The camera is detected normally.
- The old startup warning no longer appears.
- The application can import or browse photos as it did previously.
If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, check whether the installer was interrupted, whether antivirus software removed the file, and whether the application is too old for the current Windows installation.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the file disappeared suddenly, Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined it.
Rank #3
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry that identifies a FUJIFILM file or the folder used by the camera software.
Only restore a quarantined file when all of these conditions are met:
- You recognize the FUJIFILM installation.
- The file came from the original installer or trusted recovery media.
- The detection appears to be a false positive.
- You have checked the file’s location and surrounding program files.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can expose the device if the file is genuinely malicious. When there is any doubt, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete FUJIFILM package from trusted media instead.

Fix 4: Remove obsolete FUJIFILM software if you no longer need it
A missing-DLL message does not always mean that a file must be restored. If you stopped using the camera software years ago, the warning may come from a leftover startup command.
Uninstall the parent application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Locate the FUJIFILM, FinePix, or Fuji entry.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
If it is not listed:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the old camera software.
- Choose Uninstall or Change.
- Restart Windows.
Disable only a confirmed orphaned startup entry
If the application is already gone but the warning continues:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Right-click the clearly identified FUJIFILM or RegShave entry.
- Select Disable.
- Restart the computer.
Do not delete unknown registry entries simply because their names look unfamiliar. If the startup item points to a file that no longer exists and you have confirmed that the camera software is no longer required, disabling it is the safer first step.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the camera driver
This step applies when the error occurs while connecting the camera, rather than when opening the photo application.
Check Device Manager
- Connect the camera if Windows can detect it.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices, Cameras, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the camera, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the device remains broken:
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected camera or USB device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Disconnect the camera.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the camera.
- Reinstall the matching FUJIFILM camera software or driver package.
Do not remove unrelated USB controllers. If Device Manager does not identify a FUJIFILM device, reinstalling fregshex.dll alone will not repair camera detection.
When updating legacy hardware drivers manually, the difficult part is identifying the exact model and avoiding an incompatible package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation, while reinstalling the matching FUJIFILM package remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Windows repair commands are useful when several applications have missing or damaged system files. They will not normally recreate a third-party FUJIFILM DLL, so use them as a secondary step.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the FUJIFILM application again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, restart and run SFC once more. If the DLL error remains but other Windows programs work normally, return to repairing the FUJIFILM installation rather than repeating Windows scans indefinitely.
For users who want help identifying damaged Windows components instead of repeatedly interpreting DISM and SFC output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show the reported problems; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the FUJIFILM application remains the definitive fix for this missing app DLL.
Fix 7: Install pending Windows updates
Legacy camera software can behave differently after a Windows upgrade or migration.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
Windows Update may improve compatibility or repair operating-system components, but it will not be expected to supply fregshex.dll. If the FUJIFILM program is designed for an older Windows release, try its installer’s compatibility settings:
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click the installer or application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the application.
Use compatibility mode only for the identified FUJIFILM executable or installer. Do not apply it indiscriminately to Windows system files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent cleanup or uninstall
System Restore is useful when the application worked recently and the problem began after registry cleaning, software removal, or a major system change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, installed programs, and drivers. It normally does not remove personal documents, photos, or other personal files. It may not restore a DLL if the original application files were already missing from the selected restore point, so reinstalling the parent program can still be necessary.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It works with DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no reliable evidence that fregshex.dll is a COM or ActiveX registration library. A typical attempt like this is therefore unlikely to help:
regsvr32 fregshex.dll
It will not:
- Download a missing file
- Restore a deleted file
- Rebuild the FUJIFILM installation
- Repair a missing dependency
- Convert a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit DLL
- Make an incompatible application work
If the original FUJIFILM installer explicitly runs regsvr32, let that installer perform the operation. Do not register a loose DLL downloaded from an unknown source.
Best Value
Avoid these unsafe fixes
Do not:
- Download
fregshex.dllfrom a random DLL download site. - Copy the file into
System32or `SysWOW64 without knowing the installer’s required path. - Replace it with a similarly named DLL.
- Install every Visual C++ Redistributable without evidence that the affected program needs one.
- Use registry cleaners to repair a missing application file.
- Restore an antivirus detection without checking its source and location.
- Delete startup or registry entries that you have not identified.
- Assume that a 64-bit replacement can satisfy a 32-bit application.
A complete installer supplies the DLL, its expected location, related files, configuration, and any required dependencies together.

If the DLL exists but Windows still reports it as missing, the next suspect is a missing dependency or an incompatible legacy executable. Reinstall the complete application, inspect the installer logs if available, and use a dependency-analysis tool rather than replacing DLLs at random.
FAQ
Is fregshex.dll a Windows file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system file. It is associated with third-party FUJIFILM software and the older Fregshave or RegShave component.
Which FUJIFILM program installed it?
Public historical records connect it with RegShave and older Fuji FinePix camera or USB software. The exact parent product and installer version are not reliably identified in current FUJIFILM documentation.
Should I install a Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not as the first fix. fregshex.dll is not documented as a Microsoft runtime file. Reinstall the FUJIFILM application first. Install a runtime only if the affected application’s documentation or dependency analysis specifically identifies it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I download only fregshex.dll?
That is not the preferred repair. A loose DLL may be malicious, mismatched, or unable to resolve the other files the application needs. Use the original FUJIFILM installer, camera media, or an official support download.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling the camera software?
The main program may be gone while a startup entry remains. If you no longer use the software, uninstall the remaining package or disable the confirmed orphaned startup entry.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not. Registering a DLL does not restore missing files, and there is no reliable evidence that this file requires COM registration.
Is there a 64-bit version?
The available historical record identifies the file as Win32. No reliable public evidence establishes that a 64-bit version exists. Treat the old application as a 32-bit program unless its official documentation says otherwise.
Should I use System32 or SysWOW64?
Do not choose a folder manually. Install the DLL through the FUJIFILM application’s installer, which places files where that application expects them.
What if I do not need the old FUJIFILM software?
Uninstall it and disable any remaining confirmed startup entry. Removing the obsolete parent program is safer than restoring an unnecessary DLL.
