“This application failed to start because dnsprov.dll was not found.”
If Windows reports that dnsprov.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or is corrupted, do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. dnsprov.dll is the Microsoft DNS Provider, a legacy Windows Management Instrumentation component used to manage DNS servers and DNS resource records.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, modern DNS client library, or ordinary game dependency. Its strongest documented association is with Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003. On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 desktop, the message may instead come from an old administration tool or an incomplete installation that expects a legacy Windows Server component.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches the affected computer:
#1 Best Overall
- WIRED NETWORK USB PRINT SERVER: Connect a single USB 2.0 printer to a wired Ethernet LAN (RJ45); 10Base-T, 100Base-TX auto-sensing to ensure a reliable connection, letting you print from any network computer, across the office or over the Internet
- MANUAL NETWORK SETUP REQUIRED: Configuration via web interface (static IP or DHCP) using LPR queue “LP1"; Not plug-and-play, requires intermediate network knowledge for installation; Access our online FAQs for additional helpful tips and instructions
- USB PRINTER COMPATIBILITY: Works with most USB 2.0 printers using standard drivers; Not compatible with USB hubs, multi-function printers with proprietary drivers, or printers requiring full bi-directional communication
- COMPATIBILITY: The USB to Ethernet print server is USB 2.0 compliant and works with macOS and Windows; It also supports LPR network printing and Bonjour Print Services for broad compatibility; Included software is compatible with Windows only
- PRINT FROM ANYWHERE: Print from any computer connected to the Ethernet; This print server doesn’t require a wired connection to a computer, however it must be connected to your networking device (eg. router or switch) with the included RJ45 network cable
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 desktop: Run DISM and SFC first. A normal desktop application should not ordinarily require the DNS WMI Provider.
- Windows Server with the DNS Server role: Check whether the role is installed, then repair or reinstall the role through Server Manager or PowerShell.
- Windows Server after an upgrade, cleanup, restore, or failed update: Treat the problem as possible component-store or system-file damage. Use DISM followed by SFC.
- An old DNS administration tool is the only program showing the error: Repair or reinstall that tool and verify that it supports your Windows release.
- Windows 2000 Server: Use the matching Microsoft DNS WMI Provider package and its documented installation procedure. Do not use a Server 2003, Windows 10, or Windows 11 file.
- The file is present but still will not load: Check its exact path, signature, architecture, and dependencies. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency is missing, not necessarily
dnsprov.dllitself.
Before changing anything, record the full error message, the program that displays it, the Windows edition and build, whether the computer is 32-bit or 64-bit, and the complete path named in the error.
What dnsprov.dll does
Microsoft describes the DNS Provider as a WMI provider. It allows administrators and software to configure DNS servers and DNS resource records through Windows Management Instrumentation. It is a management component, not the same thing as the DNS Client service used by ordinary Windows applications.
Microsoft’s documented Windows 2000 location is:
%winntdir%System32Wbem
On a newer system, a file under System32wbem may belong to a Windows component, but its presence alone does not prove that it is the correct file for the installed Windows build.
Microsoft documented different provider files for Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003. Windows 2000 used the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit package named Dnsprov.zip. On Windows Server 2003, the provider was installed and registered automatically with the DNS Server service. These files are not interchangeable.

Do not download a replacement DLL
A manually downloaded DLL can have the wrong:
- Windows version
- service-pack level
- CPU architecture
- digital signature
- dependency set
- installation path
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder may silence one message while leaving the underlying Windows component damaged. It can also make troubleshooting harder.
Use Windows Update, Microsoft installation media, the installed DNS Server role, or the original Microsoft-supplied application package instead. There is no current Microsoft redistributable specifically named dnsprov.dll.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair for Windows 10, Windows 11, and supported Windows Server installations when the file may be missing or corrupted.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when DISM finishes.
Run System File Checker
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Open the program that originally reported the error.
A successful repair may produce one of these results:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no corruption.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Continue with the repair-source steps below.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If Windows Update cannot provide them, use matching Windows installation media or a known-good local repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build. Do not point DISM at a random copied Windows folder.
Manually hunting through component versions and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions are provided by the full version, but it is not required and Microsoft repair media remains the authoritative fix.
Check the CBS repair log
If SFC cannot repair the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
- Search the log for
dnsprov.dllorCannot repair. - If the component cannot be restored, use matching installation media or perform an in-place Windows repair.
SFC is not guaranteed to restore this particular file on every Windows release. If the component is not part of the installed edition, or an old program expects a provider that the current system does not supply, system-file repair will not make that old program compatible.
Fix 2: Check and repair the DNS Server role
This fix applies to Windows Server machines that provide DNS, especially domain controllers and dedicated DNS servers.
Check the role in Server Manager
- Sign in with an account that has administrator permissions.
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Select Remove Roles and Features.
- Select Next until the Server Roles page appears.
- Select the affected server.
- Check whether DNS Server is selected.
- Cancel the wizard if you are only checking.
If the DNS Server role is missing, return to Manage and select Add Roles and Features:
- Choose Role-based or feature-based installation.
- Select the affected server.
- Select DNS Server.
- Accept the required management tools if prompted.
- Select Next through the remaining pages.
- Select Install.
- Restart if Server Manager requests it.
- Test the DNS management tool again.
Microsoft’s current DNS Server installation guidance is available in Install and Configure DNS Server.

Install-WindowsFeature -Name DNS
When the command completes, check the result. If the installation succeeds, restart if requested and test the DNS service:
Get-Service -Name DNS
The service should show a valid status. You can also inspect the current DNS management commands through Microsoft’s DnsServer PowerShell module.
If the role is already installed but its files are damaged, remove and reinstalling the role may not be sufficient. Run DISM and SFC first, then use matching Server installation media or an in-place repair if the error continues.
Fix 3: Repair the old administration tool
If dnsprov.dll appears only when launching a particular DNS console, monitoring program, or server-management utility, the application may be expecting an obsolete provider.
- Note the application name shown in the error or Task Manager.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected tool.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Install a version of the tool that supports the current Windows Server release.
For classic Control Panel programs:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Repair or Change if available.
Do not place dnsprov.dll beside the program merely because that makes the loader find it. A program that expects a legacy WMI provider may also require a matching schema, registry registration, dependencies, and server components.
If the tool is essential and cannot be updated, run it on the Windows Server version for which it was designed. A compatibility setting may help with a user-interface problem, but it does not recreate a missing WMI provider.
Fix 4: Handle Windows 2000 legacy installations correctly
Microsoft’s documented Windows 2000 procedure is a special case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit supplied Dnsprov.zip. The provider was placed under:
%winntdir%System32Wbem
The installation also required Dnsschema.mof, which Microsoft’s procedure compiles with:
mofcomp dnsschema.mof
For that specific Windows 2000 provider package, Microsoft documented:
regsvr32 dnsprov.dll
The command is not a universal repair instruction. It applies to the matching legacy provider and must be used with the corresponding schema and Windows installation. It is not a safe substitute for DISM, SFC, DNS Server role repair, or a supported in-place repair on Windows 10, Windows 11, or a newer Windows Server release.
Do not use a Windows 2000 package on a modern system, and do not use a Server 2003 provider to repair Windows 2000. The provider files are version-specific.
Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents the tool for that purpose in regsvr32.
A common mistake is to run:
regsvr32 dnsprov.dll
against any copy found on the computer. That may produce an error because the file is not intended for that registration method, the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version is being used, a dependency is missing, or the required WMI schema has not been compiled.
Use regsvr32 only when Microsoft’s instructions for the exact Windows release and provider package call for it. The documented Windows 2000 process includes both Dnsschema.mof and mofcomp; registering an arbitrary DLL alone is not equivalent.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
dnsprov.dll. - Check the original path, detection details, and action taken.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:
- It came from a trusted Windows installation.
- Its original path is appropriate, such as a Windows component directory.
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- The file matches the installed Windows version and architecture.
- A full malware scan does not find an active threat.
If the file was modified or detected as malicious, do not restore an untrusted copy. Repair Windows from matching media instead, then run a full scan.
Fix 6: Confirm the path, architecture, and dependencies
A 32-bit provider and a 64-bit provider are not interchangeable. Do not assume that a 64-bit computer needs the same DLL copied into both System32 and SysWOW64. Windows uses those directory names according to architecture rules that are easy to misapply.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the path shown in the error:
- A path under
System32wbemsuggests a Windows management component. - A path inside an application directory may indicate that an old tool is incorrectly packaging or expecting the provider.
- A path under a temporary folder deserves additional security investigation.
If the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab. A valid signature helps establish origin, but it does not prove that the file matches the current Windows build.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that Windows found dnsprov.dll but could not load one of its dependencies. This is another reason not to replace the named file blindly.
Fix 7: Do not use Device Manager for this DLL
dnsprov.dll is not a hardware driver. Device Manager will not normally repair it.
If the program that reports the error also identifies a network adapter or storage-controller problem:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters or the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Only update the device that is actually reporting a problem. Do not install a driver package merely because a DLL error mentions DNS.
Guessing which of many installed drivers is outdated can waste time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; its driver installation features are handled by the full version, and it is not required for repairing dnsprov.dll.
If the error remains after repair
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the exact Windows edition, build, and architecture.
- Confirm whether the machine is a DNS server, domain controller, or ordinary desktop.
- Check whether the DNS Server role is installed.
- Run DISM, then SFC, from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Check whether the problem began after a failed upgrade, system cleanup, disk problem, antivirus quarantine, or restoration from an old backup.
- Repair or reinstall the application that displays the error.
- Test with matching installation media or an in-place repair if Windows cannot restore the component.
- If only an old tool fails while Windows and DNS work normally, replace or retire the incompatible tool.
System Restore can help when a suitable restore point predates the problem, but it is a fallback rather than a replacement for component repair.
FAQ
Is dnsprov.dll part of Windows?
It is a Microsoft DNS WMI Provider associated with Windows DNS server management. Its documented legacy installation is under System32Wbem. It is not universally present on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is dnsprov.dll a virus?
The filename alone does not establish that. Verify its path, Microsoft signature, origin, and security history. Do not restore a quarantined copy unless it is verified and the Windows installation is trusted.
Is dnsprov.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No current Microsoft redistributable specifically named in the documentation supplies this file. Installing unrelated runtime packages is not a supported repair.
Can I copy dnsprov.dll from another computer?
That is generally unsafe and unsupported. The source computer may have a different Windows release, build, architecture, signature, or dependency set. Restore the matching Windows component instead.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
Do not choose a folder by trial and error. The correct location depends on the Windows component and architecture. Microsoft’s documented legacy location is %winntdir%System32Wbem, but that does not authorize copying an arbitrary file there.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does the file exist but Windows still say it cannot be found?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be damaged, the architecture may be wrong, or the calling program may be incompatible. The loader’s wording does not always identify the exact missing file.
Will reinstalling Windows fix it?
A supported in-place repair using matching installation media can restore damaged Windows components when DISM and SFC cannot. A clean installation is a last resort and requires a verified backup.
Is this normally a Windows 10 or Windows 11 problem?
Not usually. On modern Windows, the message more often points to an old administration tool, a damaged server component, or an application that expects a legacy provider. Start with DISM/SFC and identify the program that triggers the error.
