Sony’s March 18, 2026 PlayStation Portal update adds a 1080p High Quality streaming mode. It uses a higher video bitrate, which can reduce compression and preserve more detail in busy scenes. The mode works with both Remote Play from your own PS5 and PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming—but it is not a higher-resolution screen or a guarantee of lower latency.
What the PlayStation Portal update changes
The headline feature is a new 1080p High Quality option. According to T3’s March 18 report, the setting increases the stream’s bitrate, potentially producing a cleaner image with less visible blockiness, softness and texture smearing.

It applies to two different kinds of streaming:
- Remote Play: your Portal receives a stream from your paired PS5.
- Cloud streaming: the game runs on Sony’s servers and is streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
The update also reportedly includes improvements to game-bundle product pages, game-invite and Trophy notifications, search and new-user onboarding. Those are useful refinements, but the higher-quality video mode is the significant change.
It is better streaming quality—not a better screen
The Portal already has an 8-inch 1080p LCD display and supports up to 60fps, according to Sony’s official specifications. The update does not add a 1440p or 4K mode, a new processor or local PS5 game support.

Instead, the higher bitrate can give the existing 1080p panel a cleaner source image. You may notice more detail in foliage, distant objects, shadows, particles and fast-moving scenes. However, this is a conditional improvement: the stream cannot restore detail that was never sent, and image quality still depends on the PS5 or cloud service, the game, Wi‐Fi interference, congestion, packet loss and latency.
There is no independent bitrate figure or side-by-side measurement in the report, so “better than ever” should be understood as the mode’s intended benefit—not a universal test result.
How to enable 1080p High Quality
T3 reports that the setting is available during a streaming session:

- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Start a Remote Play or cloud-streaming session.
- Open the Portal’s Quick Menu.
- Select Max Resolution.
- Choose 1080p High Quality.
- End and restart the streaming session.
The same menu reportedly retains 1080p Standard and 720p options. The menu path and restart requirement come from T3’s rollout report and may vary with firmware or region.
If the option is missing
- Install the latest Portal system software available to you.
- Restart the Portal.
- End the current session and launch it again.
- Try Remote Play and cloud streaming separately.
- Allow for a gradual regional or account-level rollout.
Do not assume every Portal receives the feature at exactly the same time.
Which resolution setting should you use?
| Connection or priority | Best starting point |
|---|---|
| Strong, stable home Wi‐Fi | 1080p High Quality |
| Generally good connection with occasional congestion | 1080p Standard |
| Weak or unstable Wi‐Fi | 720p |
| Mobile hotspot or limited data plan | Standard or 720p |
| Competitive play with latency problems | Whichever mode remains most stable and responsive |
Sony lists 5Mbps as the minimum broadband connection requirement and recommends at least 15Mbps for a better experience. Those are download-speed figures, not guarantees of low latency, low packet loss or consistent Wi‐Fi performance.

High Quality uses more data and places greater demands on the connection. If bandwidth fluctuates, it can cause more stutter, dropouts or reconnections than Standard or 720p. A lower-quality stream that stays responsive is often preferable to a sharper stream that repeatedly freezes.
A practical A/B test
- Play the same visually busy scene using 1080p Standard.
- Switch to 1080p High Quality.
- Restart the session as required.
- Compare foliage, distant detail, dark areas, particles and rapid camera movement.
- Keep High Quality only if the clarity improvement is worth any added stutter or responsiveness problems.
If the picture remains soft, the Portal’s panel may not be the issue. The limitation could be the stream from the PS5, the game’s image quality, wireless interference or the cloud service.

Remote Play does not require PS Plus Premium
These two streaming modes are easy to confuse. Ordinary Remote Play from your own PS5 does not require PlayStation Plus, although a subscription may still be needed for games whose online multiplayer requires it.

- Beautiful 8” LCD Screen - Take in every exquisite detail of your favorite games as they come alive on a brightly lit and gorgeous full HD screen.
Cloud streaming on Portal does require PlayStation Plus Premium. Sony says cloud availability depends on the title, country, region, plan and changing catalog eligibility. Select digital PS5 games from your own library can also be streamed, but not every owned game qualifies. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus information for current plan and catalog details.
What Portal still cannot do
- Run PS5 games locally without streaming.
- Provide a 4K or 1440p output mode.
- Guarantee low latency on distant or congested networks.
- Make every PS5 or PS4 game available through cloud streaming.
- Fix poor Wi‐Fi coverage, packet loss or an overloaded router.
- Support every game that requires VR or unsupported additional peripherals.
For Remote Play, Sony says the PS5 must be paired, connected to broadband and either fully powered on or in Rest Mode. Public networks that require extra sign-in or validation may need a phone or tablet, and initial Portal setup must already have been completed on home Wi‐Fi. Compatibility and setup guidance is available through Sony’s Portal support hub.
Is this a reason to buy a PlayStation Portal?
The update makes Portal more appealing to existing PS5 owners who have reliable Wi‐Fi and care about image clarity. It is also a useful improvement for Premium subscribers who want cloud streaming on a dedicated device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt is a weaker proposition if you lack a PS5, need offline gaming, rely on unstable public or mobile networks, or expect a native handheld that runs games independently. The update improves the stream; it does not change what Portal is.
Optional PlayStation Link accessories such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset can provide compatible wireless audio, but neither is required for the video upgrade.
