The pkmtrace.dll error may say “The program can’t start because pkmtrace.dll was not found,” “The file pkmtrace.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “Error loading pkmtrace.dll.” It can also appear as “The specified module could not be found” or “Failed to load pkmtrace.dll.”
The 60-second answer
pkmtrace.dll is the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server Trace DLL. It belongs to the old SharePointPortalServer product, not to Windows 10 or Windows 11 itself.
The safest fix is to identify the program, service, scheduled task, or installer requesting the file, then repair or reinstall the matching SharePoint Portal Server component from original Microsoft installation media. Do not download an isolated DLL and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
If the computer never intentionally ran SharePoint Portal Server, the message usually comes from an obsolete enterprise application, migration utility, leftover startup entry, or incomplete uninstall. Windows may be working normally.

What is pkmtrace.dll?
pkmtrace.dll is associated with Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server and is described as the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server Trace DLL. Its reported product name is SharePointPortalServer, and its publisher is Microsoft Corporation.
SharePoint Portal Server was an enterprise collaboration, indexing, and document-management server product. SharePoint Portal Server 2001 was a separate server application built on Windows 2000 Server technologies, rather than a DLL included with every Windows installation. Microsoft’s historical product overview describes its portal and document-management role in the SharePoint Portal Server 2001 documentation.
This distinction matters. pkmtrace.dll is not normally:
- A Windows system component
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX file
- A .NET file
- A device-driver library
- A modern SharePoint Online component
- A general-purpose gaming DLL
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is also retired. Microsoft lists April 9, 2014, as its end of extended support in the product lifecycle record. A current Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer can still display this error if an old program or startup reference remains, but that does not mean the DLL should be part of the operating system.
First find what is requesting the file
The filename alone cannot identify the exact program that displays the error. Find that program before changing Windows.
Check the complete error window
Read the title bar and the text around the filename. Record:
- The executable name
- The application name
- The full error wording
- When it appears, such as during startup, login, or a particular program launch
- Whether it appears once or repeatedly
If the error names an old SharePoint administration tool, portal service, installer, or enterprise utility, repair that product first.
Check Task Manager startup entries
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries connected with SharePoint, portal software, document management, enterprise search, Office integration, or an unknown publisher.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location.
- Record the executable path and publisher.
Do not delete the entry immediately. If you disable it, note the original setting so it can be restored if needed.

Inspect the process with Process Explorer
Microsoft’s Process Explorer can show which process has opened or loaded a DLL.
Use it when the error is intermittent or comes from an unknown background process:
- Download Process Explorer from Microsoft.
- Run it as administrator.
- Press Ctrl + F.
- Search for
pkmtrace.dll. - Review any matching process or handle.
- Right-click the result and choose the option to inspect the process location or properties.
If no process is active, check startup items, scheduled tasks, services, and the application’s own installation folder.

Decide whether SharePoint is still needed
Before repairing an obsolete server product, determine whether the computer still hosts a working SharePoint environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAsk:
- Is this computer still used as a SharePoint Portal Server?
- Does it contain portal databases or document repositories?
- Is another server or business process dependent on it?
- Is the error coming from an old management console rather than the server itself?
- Was SharePoint recently removed or migrated?
If the installation is still used, back up the SharePoint databases, configuration, and portal data before repairing or reinstalling anything. A repair may preserve the existing installation, but you should not rely on repair as your only backup.
If the machine no longer needs SharePoint, the correct fix may be to remove the obsolete program and its stale startup reference rather than restore the DLL.
Fix 1: Repair SharePoint Portal Server from matching media
This is the most likely fix when a SharePoint service, administration tool, or legacy server workload is requesting pkmtrace.dll.
Use installation media that matches the installed SharePoint generation and service-pack level. Do not mix files from different releases.
Recommended Free Tools
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Make a backup of SharePoint databases, configuration, and portal data.
- Insert the original SharePoint installation media or mount its trusted installation image.
- Open the media and run
Setup.exe. - Choose Repair, Modify, or the equivalent maintenance option if it is offered.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Restart the computer if requested.
- Start the same application or service that produced the error.
What success looks like
The original program starts without the pkmtrace.dll message, or the SharePoint service starts normally. Check Event Viewer after the restart for new application or service errors.
If repair is not offered
The installation may be too incomplete for maintenance mode, or the media may not match the installed release. Do not substitute a DLL from another package. Obtain the correct original installation source and reinstall the same SharePoint product release and service-pack level.
If the system is no longer a required SharePoint server, uninstall the old product instead. After uninstalling, check Startup apps, Task Scheduler, and Services for leftover references.
Fix 2: Remove a stale startup item, service, or scheduled task
An incomplete uninstall can leave an executable that still tries to load pkmtrace.dll.
Check Services
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Look for services referring to SharePoint, portal software, enterprise search, or an unknown old application.
- Double-click a suspicious service.
- Record its Service name, Path to executable, and Startup type.
- If the product has been intentionally retired, stop the service.
- Set Startup type to Disabled only after confirming that it is not needed.
Do not disable an active production SharePoint service simply to hide the message.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
taskschd.mscand press Enter. - Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that run at logon, startup, or on a schedule.
- Open suspicious tasks and inspect the Actions tab.
- Record the executable path and arguments.
- If the task belongs to an uninstalled application, disable it first.
- Remove it only after confirming that the application is no longer required.
Repair or remove the owning application
If the executable belongs to another legacy program, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the program, and choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall when available.
Rank #3
If the application is still required, reinstall it from its original trusted media. If it is not required, uninstall it cleanly and remove only the confirmed leftover startup reference.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can quarantine a file, although there is no evidence that every pkmtrace.dll error is caused by malware or antivirus detection.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event naming
pkmtrace.dllor the SharePoint installation folder. - Review the detection details and original path.
Only restore the file if:
- The SharePoint installation is legitimate.
- The original path is known.
- The file belongs to the correct installation.
- The security product confirms the action was a false positive.
If you are unsure, do not restore the quarantined file. Run a full scan and repair SharePoint from trusted installation media instead.
Fix 4: Verify the path, signature, and architecture
A copy found on the computer is not automatically authentic. A file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 may have been copied there manually.
Right-click the file, choose Properties, and check:
- Location
- Digital Signatures
- Details
- Product name
- Original filename
- Publisher or company
- File version
The file should be in a location associated with the legitimate SharePoint installation, not an arbitrary Windows folder.
Public file indexes report a commonly circulated pkmtrace.dll build as 32-bit, but that information is not confirmed by a current Microsoft file manifest. Treat the architecture, version, and size of any indexed copy as unverified.
The calling process also matters. A 32-bit program needs the correct compatible library from its own application installation. A 64-bit Windows installation does not make every DLL interchangeable.
To check a program’s architecture, inspect its executable properties or use the application’s documentation. If the error says that a procedure or entry point could not be found, the DLL may be the wrong version rather than simply missing.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
“Error loading pkmtrace.dll” and “The specified module could not be found” do not always mean that pkmtrace.dll itself is absent. Windows can show that message when a dependency required by the DLL is missing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the file exists:
- Confirm that the application is loading the copy from the expected folder.
- Check the file’s signature and product metadata.
- Confirm that adjacent SharePoint files are present.
- Check Event Viewer for a more specific application error.
- Compare the installation with a known-good backup or the original media.
- Repair or reinstall the complete SharePoint component.
Do not download individual dependency files from random DLL sites. A missing dependency is evidence of an incomplete application installation, not a reason to populate Windows folders with unrelated files.

Fix 6: Run DISM and SFC for possible Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are useful when other Windows files are also damaged, but they are not guaranteed to restore a legacy SharePoint DLL.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the application again.
Microsoft provides the same DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: Windows protected files appear intact. Continue with SharePoint repair or application identification.
- SFC repaired files: Restart and test again.
- SFC could not repair some files: Review the result, restart, and repeat the repair process only if Microsoft’s guidance indicates it. A clean SFC result still does not prove that SharePoint is intact.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows components is wasting time, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the SharePoint application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 7: Consider System Restore only after confirming the change
System Restore is reasonable when:
- The application worked previously.
- The error started after a known software change.
- You have no clean installation media.
- You understand that recently installed applications and drivers may be affected.
To use it:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose Show more restore points if available.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Create a backup of important data.
- Start the restore.
System Restore is not a substitute for backing up SharePoint databases or portal data.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall related drivers only if evidence points there
A driver is not the normal source of pkmtrace.dll, and replacing drivers will not normally restore a SharePoint DLL. Consider this step only if Event Viewer identifies a related device, driver, or application failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category named in the error or event.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For a clean driver reinstall, choose Uninstall device, restart, and install the driver from the computer or device manufacturer’s official support page.
If manually checking dozens of driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues, with installation handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the SharePoint component that owns pkmtrace.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
This command is often suggested for every missing DLL:
regsvr32 pkmtrace.dll
That is not a standard repair for this file. Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. There is no verified evidence that pkmtrace.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
Running the command may produce:
The module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Even if registration succeeds, it will not restore a missing dependency, correct a mismatched SharePoint version, or repair an incomplete installation. Use regsvr32 only when the specific application documentation confirms that this DLL must be registered.
Why downloading pkmtrace.dll is a poor first-line fix
An isolated DLL download can provide:
- Malware or a tampered file
- The wrong SharePoint release
- The wrong architecture
- A file with missing dependencies
- A version that causes an entry-point error
- A copy that does not match the application’s other binaries
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also hide the owning application while leaving the installation damaged. Windows folder names do not prove that a file belongs there.
Best Value
Use the original SharePoint installation media, a verified backup, or the legitimate application installer instead. There is no current Microsoft redistributable specifically intended to install pkmtrace.dll as a standalone Windows component.
What information to provide when seeking further help
Record these details before changing files:
- The complete error text
- The executable or service name
- The executable’s full path
- The Event Viewer source and event ID
- The SharePoint generation, if known
- The full path of any existing
pkmtrace.dll - Digital signature and product metadata
- Whether the calling program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The file hash, if your support team requests one
- Whether antivirus quarantined the file
- Whether the error began after an uninstall, update, restore, or migration
This information distinguishes a missing file from a missing dependency, wrong architecture, stale startup entry, and damaged SharePoint installation.

Is pkmtrace.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. It is associated with the legacy Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server product. Its presence in a Windows folder does not make it an ordinary Windows component.
Which SharePoint version supplied pkmtrace.dll?
It is associated with SharePoint Portal Server, including the older 2001 and 2003 product generation. The exact build of an individual copy should be verified from its file properties and matching installation media.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Do not place an isolated copy in either folder. Identify the application and restore the file to the correct product directory through SharePoint repair or reinstallation.
Is pkmtrace.dll 32-bit?
Public indexes commonly describe the file as 32-bit, but that is not confirmed for every build by a current Microsoft manifest. Match the file to the calling executable and SharePoint release.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will SFC or DISM restore it?
Usually not. They repair protected Windows components. They can help if Windows itself is corrupted, but a clean result does not prove that the old SharePoint installation is healthy.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Generally no. Registration is not a substitute for repairing the SharePoint installation, and the file is not verified as a self-registering COM DLL.
Why does the error appear on a computer with no SharePoint?
A removed application, scheduled task, service, installer, or enterprise utility may still reference the file. Find the requesting executable before assuming Windows is damaged.
Does SharePoint Online need this DLL?
No. Using SharePoint Online does not mean that the legacy SharePoint Portal Server DLL should be installed locally.
Should I use System Restore?
Only when the file worked previously, the timing points to a known change, and you have considered the effect on recently installed programs and drivers. Back up important data first.
