dtswiz.dll Missing: Repair the Legacy SQL Server Component

dtswiz.dll errors usually point to an old Microsoft SQL Server or Data Transformation Services installation, not to a missing Windows file. Before replacing anything, identify the program that displays the error and repair the SQL Server component it depends on.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Record these details before making changes:

  • Which program fails: Note the application name and whether it is a database tool, business application, installer, or legacy reporting program.
  • When the error appears: Does it occur at Windows sign-in, when opening the program, during an import or export, or after an uninstall or upgrade?
  • The exact message: Common variants include “dtswiz.dll is missing,” “The specified module could not be found,” and “Cannot find dtswiz.dll.”
  • Application architecture: Check whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit. Historical metadata identifies dtswiz.dll as a 32-bit file, but the application that needs it may determine which SQL Server components are required.
  • Recent changes: Check for a SQL Server uninstall, cleanup utility, antivirus quarantine, failed upgrade, disk problem, or application repair.

Do not copy a downloaded DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 before completing this check.

What is dtswiz.dll?

dtswiz.dll is a Microsoft DLL associated with the legacy DTS Wizard component of Microsoft SQL Server. Historical public metadata describes it as “DTSWIZ – DTS Wizard,” published by Microsoft Corporation, and reports it as a 32-bit file with version 1998.11.13.0 and a size of approximately 456 KB.

Those exact version and size details come from historical third-party file catalogs, not from current Microsoft documentation. Treat them as identification clues rather than proof that a particular modern SQL Server installer should contain the file.

The file is not normally a Windows system DLL. It should not ordinarily be installed directly in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Its expected location is within the SQL Server or DTS installation that originally supplied it.

Current SQL Server documentation primarily refers to DTSWizard.exe, the SQL Server Import and Export Wizard. Microsoft documents current wizard files under paths such as:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server<version>DTSBinn
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server<version>DTSBinn

See Microsoft’s SQL Server file locations and documentation for starting the SQL Server Import and Export Wizard.

Is dtswiz.dll the same as DTSWizard.exe?

No. They are related by the DTS and SQL Server wizard functionality, but they are different files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A current SSDT, SSIS, or SSMS installation may provide DTSWizard.exe and modern runtime libraries without providing the historical dtswiz.dll. Installing a current SQL Server component therefore does not guarantee that an old application will work.

Do not mix a historical DLL with modern SSIS files. A matching filename is not enough; the release, architecture, dependencies, and application interface must also be compatible.

Why the error appears

The wording does not always identify the true missing file. These messages are commonly reported:

dtswiz.dll is missing
This application failed to start because dtswiz.dll was not found.
The file dtswiz.dll is missing or corrupted.
Error loading dtswiz.dll. The specified module could not be found.
The program can't start because dtswiz.dll is missing from your computer.
Cannot find dtswiz.dll.

“Specified module could not be found” can mean either that dtswiz.dll is absent or that a dependency required by it is absent.

The most likely causes are:

Cause What usually happened Correct response
Damaged legacy SQL Server component Files were deleted or corrupted Repair the original SQL Server or DTS installation
Incomplete upgrade or uninstall Setup removed shared files or left components inconsistent Repair the affected SQL Server instance using matching media
Wrong SQL Server generation A current installer does not provide the old binary Identify and install the application’s compatible prerequisite
Antivirus quarantine Security software removed the file Check quarantine and verify the file before restoring it
Wrong architecture A 64-bit or 32-bit component does not match the application Install the architecture required by the dependent program
Missing dependency The named DLL exists, but another module cannot load Repair the product and inspect logs
Windows corruption Broader system files are damaged Run DISM followed by SFC as a secondary repair

Fix 1: Repair the SQL Server installation

This is the safest and most likely fix when the error affects an existing SQL Server-related application.

Using SQL Server Installation Center

  1. Locate the SQL Server installation media or mounted installation image used for the affected installation.
  2. Open the installation media and run setup.exe.
  3. In SQL Server Installation Center, select Maintenance.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. Choose the affected SQL Server instance or shared feature.
  6. Continue through Setup and allow it to replace missing or damaged files.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Open the original application and repeat the action that produced the error.

Microsoft states that SQL Server repair can replace missing or corrupt files, registry keys, and invalid configuration values. The documented process is described in Repair a failed SQL Server installation.

  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

SQL Server versions and instances can coexist. Repairing a different instance may have no effect, so compare the application’s documented prerequisite with the instance selected in Setup.

Using the command line

For a named SQL Server instance, open Command Prompt as administrator, change to the folder containing the matching setup.exe, and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
setup.exe /q /ACTION=Repair /INSTANCENAME=<instancename>

Replace <instancename> with the actual instance name. If the problem concerns shared components, Microsoft also documents:

setup.exe /ACTION=REPAIR /INDICATEPROGRESS=TRUE

Do not run these commands from an unrelated SQL Server installer. The installer should match the affected product generation and installation media.

If repair reports missing Windows Installer cache files, follow Microsoft’s guidance for restoring missing SQL Server Windows Installer cache files.

If the feature is no longer installed

If the old application requires Integration Services and that feature is absent:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start SQL Server Setup.
  2. Select New SQL stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.
  3. Select the appropriate instance or shared-feature installation.
  4. Under Shared Features, select Integration Services.
  5. Complete Setup and restart the application.

Microsoft’s Integration Services installation guide provides the supported installation path.

For a modern development environment, install SSDT through Visual Studio Installer and add the SQL Server Integration Services extension where required. Use Microsoft’s SSDT installation documentation, but do not assume modern SSDT will restore the historical dtswiz.dll.

Fix 2: Reinstall the application’s compatible SQL Server generation

If repair cannot find the required files, identify the exact SQL Server or DTS prerequisite documented by the affected application.

An old business application may require a legacy SQL Server component that is not included with current SSIS, SSMS, or SSDT. Installing SQL Server 2022 or a current development tool does not prove that it supplies the historical DLL.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

Use this process:

  1. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Search for SQL Server, Data Transformation Services, SSIS, or the name of the affected application.
  4. Record the installed SQL Server versions and instances.
  5. Check the application’s installation records, documentation, or original deployment package for its SQL Server prerequisite.
  6. Obtain the compatible installer from Microsoft or the organization’s original licensed installation media.
  7. Install the required x86 or x64 component.
  8. Run the application again.

If the old software cannot be safely installed on the current system, isolate it in a compatible virtual machine or plan a migration. Repeatedly replacing one DLL is not a reliable way to maintain an application built for an obsolete SQL Server interface.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and disk health

A file that disappears after a restart, cleanup, or security scan may have been quarantined. This is a possibility, not proof that antivirus software caused the problem.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving dtswiz.dll or the affected SQL Server directory.
  5. Do not restore the file immediately.
  6. Verify that it belongs to the expected SQL Server installation and is digitally signed by Microsoft.
  7. If the file is unsigned, stored in a suspicious directory, or has an unexpected filename, leave it quarantined and investigate further.
  8. If it is a verified file from the original installation, restore it according to your organization’s security policy.
  9. Run SQL Server Setup repair afterward.

If the file returns and disappears again, check scheduled cleanup software, permissions, antivirus history, and disk health. Do not manually delete remaining SQL Server folders while investigating an incomplete uninstall.

Fix 4: Confirm 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The historical dtswiz.dll metadata describes a 32-bit file. A 64-bit replacement is not interchangeable with a 32-bit DLL, and copying both architectures into Windows system directories can create additional problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the affected program:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Start the affected application if it opens far enough to appear.
  4. Look for an architecture indicator or inspect the application’s installation directory.
  5. Check whether it is installed under C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86).

This is only a clue, not a complete architecture test. The dependent application, SQL Server feature, and all required libraries must align.

Current SQL Server installations can contain components under both Program Files and Program Files (x86). Use the original SQL Server installer to install the required architecture rather than copying a file between those directories.

Fix 5: Repair SSMS if SSMS is the affected program

If the error occurs specifically while using SQL Server Management Studio, repair SSMS rather than placing dtswiz.dll in a Windows directory.

  1. Open Visual Studio Installer.
  2. Find SQL Server Management Studio.
  3. Select More.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. Complete the repair and restart Windows.
  6. Test the database operation again.

Microsoft documents this process in Repair SQL Server Management Studio.

If the failing program is an older third-party application, repairing SSMS may not affect it. Repair the SQL Server or DTS prerequisite belonging to that application instead.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

SFC and DISM are secondary steps here. dtswiz.dll is not a Windows system DLL, so these commands are unlikely to restore it if the SQL Server component was never installed or was removed.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run:

  2. Test the affected application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. See Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker guidance.

Running these commands repeatedly without identifying what changed will not repair an obsolete SQL Server installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and repairing the specific SQL Server application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when evidence points to a driver problem

A display, storage, or chipset driver normally does not install dtswiz.dll. Driver updates are therefore not a primary fix for this error.

Consider a driver check only if the failure began with disk errors, storage-controller problems, application crashes, or other hardware-related symptoms:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Storage controllers, Disk drives, or System devices.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a driver from the device or computer manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and test the application.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the versions involved, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the SQL Server dependency.

Do not use regsvr32 for dtswiz.dll

Normally, regsvr32 does not apply to this file.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a self-registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A wizard or runtime DLL is not automatically registerable merely because its filename ends in .dll.

Do not run:

regsvr32 dtswiz.dll

unless the original product documentation specifically requires it. A registration error does not prove that the DLL is missing, and a successful registration would not repair an absent dependency or an incompatible SQL Server installation.

Microsoft has documented registration commands for specific SSIS components such as DTS.dll and MsDtsSrvrUtil.dll, but that does not establish that dtswiz.dll should be registered.

Why downloading dtswiz.dll is unsafe

Random DLL download pages cannot establish:

  • Which SQL Server release supplied the file.
  • Whether the file is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether its dependencies are installed.
  • Whether it has a valid Microsoft signature.
  • Whether its version matches the application.
  • Whether the SQL Server registry and installation state are intact.

A manually copied file may remove one message while causing a crash, loading error, or silent compatibility problem. Never copy it into System32, SysWOW64, the application directory, or a SQL Server directory merely because the filename matches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The only defensible manual recovery is copying a verified file from the same product’s trusted installation media or an identical, known-good installation, followed by SQL Server Setup repair. Product repair or reinstallation is preferable.

Verify the file after repair

If repair restores a file, verify its location and publisher:

  1. Browse to the SQL Server or DTS installation directory.
  2. Right-click dtswiz.dll.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open Details and review the description and company fields.
  5. Open Digital Signatures, if present.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
  8. Check the file location against the installed SQL Server component.

A copy in a random download directory or directly under C:Windows should not be treated as legitimate solely because its name is correct.

If the error remains after repair

Collect evidence before trying another replacement:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the full error text.
  2. Note the application name and version.
  3. Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Review SQL Server Setup logs for repair failures.
  5. Check whether the error affects one application or every SQL Server tool.
  6. Confirm that the repaired instance is the one the application uses.
  7. Check whether the application is 32-bit and whether the installed prerequisite matches it.
  8. Review antivirus quarantine and recent disk errors.
  9. Run the application’s original installer repair, if available.

If the application still requires a legacy SQL Server generation, migration or running it in a compatible isolated environment may be safer than repeated DLL replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Is dtswiz.dll part of Windows?

No. It is associated with legacy Microsoft SQL Server and Data Transformation Services software. It should not normally be present in the Windows system directories.

Does current SSIS install dtswiz.dll?

Not necessarily. Current Microsoft documentation focuses on DTSWizard.exe and modern SSIS runtime components. A current SSIS, SSDT, or SSMS installation may not include the historical dtswiz.dll.

Should I copy dtswiz.dll to System32?

No. Copying it there can create an architecture or version mismatch and does not repair the SQL Server installation that needs it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will regsvr32 fix the error?

Normally, no. The file is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL. Repair the original SQL Server or DTS installation instead.

Is “specified module could not be found” proof that dtswiz.dll is missing?

No. The named file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Use the original installer and repair process rather than replacing files individually.

Should I run SFC first?

No. When investigating this file, repair the SQL Server or DTS dependency first. If broader Windows corruption is suspected, run DISM and then SFC.

When should I reinstall SQL Server?

Reinstall the compatible SQL Server generation when repair cannot restore the required feature, the installation is incomplete, or the application explicitly depends on an older DTS component. Avoid assuming that the newest SQL Server release is compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an old program using this file a migration candidate?

Often, yes. If the application depends on an unsupported SQL Server or DTS generation, plan a supported replacement or isolate the legacy application rather than maintaining it through downloaded DLL copies.
