wmi.dll Is Missing: Repair the Windows Component Safely

“The program can’t start because wmi.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” The wmi.dll error can also appear as “wmi.dll was not found,” “wmi.dll could not be loaded,” or “wmi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

Do not start by downloading wmi.dll from a random DLL website. This file belongs to Microsoft Windows, so the safest repair is usually Windows servicing, not manually replacing one file.

Which fix applies to you

Use the symptom that best matches your situation:

  • Several programs report missing or damaged system DLLs: Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker.
  • Only one application fails, especially after an update or reinstall: Repair or reinstall that application from its official publisher.
  • Windows Security recently quarantined a file: Check Protection History before restoring anything.
  • The file exists, but the error says it is not designed to run on Windows: Suspect the wrong architecture, an app-local copy, incompatible dependencies, or a damaged Windows component.
  • WMI tools, monitoring software, or management scripts fail with codes such as 0x8004100E: Investigate the WMI service or repository. That is not automatically a wmi.dll loading problem.
  • The problem began after a Windows update, driver installation, crash, or rollback: Try System Restore or Windows repair options after checking the system files.
  • The message names a different file, such as wbemcomn2.dll or wbemsvc.dll: Repair the Windows component or the affected application according to the file actually named in the error.

Before making changes, note which executable displays the message, whether you use Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server, and whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. Also check whether the error began after an update, antivirus alert, cleanup, crash, or application reinstall.

What wmi.dll is

wmi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL. Its embedded description is “WMI DC and DP functionality”, and it is associated with the Microsoft Windows operating system.

WMI, or Windows Management Instrumentation, is Windows’ management infrastructure. Microsoft describes it as a combination of core WMI infrastructure, a repository, the WMI service, providers, and related components. These components are primarily associated with the %WINDIR%System32Wbem area, while system DLLs can also be found under the Windows system directory. See Microsoft’s WMI architecture documentation.

The exact location depends on the Windows release, system architecture, and the component involved. Do not treat one historical path, file size, or version as universal for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

This also explains why wmi.dll is not normally a game-specific runtime. A game, launcher, monitoring tool, installer, or business application may request WMI, but that does not mean the application owns the Windows copy of the DLL.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and repair protected files

This is the correct first repair when Windows has a missing or corrupted component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interrupted servicing, a damaged component store, filesystem corruption, malware, antivirus quarantine, and a Windows upgrade or rollback can all leave protected files in an inconsistent state.

Step 1: Check Windows Update

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
  3. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on an immediate restart.
  7. Try the application again.

If the error began directly after an update, restarting may complete pending servicing. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Step 2: Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source SFC uses to restore protected system files. Microsoft documents this process in its repair a Windows image guidance.

A successful completion message indicates that the restore operation completed. Restart Windows before testing the affected application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

The useful results are:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file problem.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, use the recovery options later in this guide.

Do not reverse the order unless Microsoft support specifically directs you to do so. DISM first, followed by SFC, gives SFC a repaired component source.

If repeating DISM and SFC by hand leaves you unsure which Windows components changed or why a repair keeps returning, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one program reports wmi.dll, do not assume Windows is the culprit. The application may be damaged, may have an incorrect app-local DLL, or may be loading a file from its own installation directory.

This is especially likely when:

  • The error started immediately after installing or updating one application.
  • The error names a particular application executable.
  • Other programs and Windows tools work normally.
  • The application folder contains a copy of wmi.dll.
  • The application was restored from a backup or copied from another computer.

Try the application’s repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, select Apps and then Apps & features.
  3. Find the affected program.
  4. Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the application entry in Windows 10.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the program again.

Some desktop applications instead provide a Repair option in Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. Select the program, choose Change, and follow its installer.

If no repair option exists:

  1. Download the installer from the application’s official publisher.
  2. Uninstall the affected program.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Install the current package from that official source.
  5. Test the program before adding optional plugins or copied files.

A launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity feature is appropriate for files owned by that game or application. It cannot repair the protected Windows system copy.

Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not the default fix for wmi.dll. Those packages may be relevant when the error names one of their own runtime files, but wmi.dll is identified with Windows and WMI, not with one of those redistributables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software can quarantine a file after detecting suspicious behavior, tampering, or a file associated with a damaged application. Do not assume a quarantine is a false positive merely because the filename looks familiar.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections and actions.
  5. Expand any entry related to the affected program or Windows component.
  6. Check the file path, detection name, and date.
  7. If malware is plausible, leave the file quarantined and run a scan.
  8. Restore or allow a file only when its origin and authenticity are established.

Microsoft explains these controls in its guide to Protection History in the Windows Security app.

If you suspect persistent malware, use Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first because Windows will restart. Defender Offline scans outside the normal Windows environment, which can help when malicious software interferes with ordinary scans. Microsoft lists the available options in its virus and threat protection documentation.

After cleaning the system, run DISM and SFC again. Malware removal alone does not necessarily restore a damaged protected file.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

Fix 4: Check whether the file is present and who is loading it

A “missing” message does not always mean the file is absent from disk. Windows may be trying to load the wrong copy, a copy with the wrong architecture, or a DLL whose dependency is missing.

Check the Windows directories

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. In the address bar, enter:
%WINDIR%System32
  1. Search for wmi.dll.
  2. Also inspect the relevant WMI directory:
%WINDIR%System32Wbem

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications may use redirected system locations, including SysWOW64. Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64 to experiment. The names are confusing, and mixing architectures can make the problem worse.

If wmi.dll is absent from the expected Windows installation, use DISM and SFC rather than copying a file from another computer.

If it is present, identify the requesting executable. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Event Viewer: Press Windows + X, select Event Viewer, and inspect Windows Logs → Application.
  • Reliability Monitor: Search Start for View reliability history and inspect the failure at the reported time.
  • The application’s own support or crash logs.
  • Process Monitor, if you are comfortable tracing image-load failures.

Pay attention to the path shown for wmi.dll. A copy beside an application executable may belong to that application and may be the wrong build. A failure involving a different DLL in the same event can also be the real cause.

Understand the architecture problem

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows does not necessarily load DLLs from the same search path as a 64-bit application. An app-local DLL supplied by an installer can override the normal Windows search order. A DLL copied from another Windows release can also cause:

  • “is either not designed to run on Windows”
  • entry-point errors
  • dependency errors
  • architecture mismatch messages

The safe correction is to repair Windows or reinstall the affected application from its official source. Do not mix DLLs from another computer, build, language, or architecture.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this problem

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, as Microsoft explains in its regsvr32 documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running this command is therefore not a normal fix:

regsvr32 wmi.dll

It may produce a message that the entry point was not found, and it does not restore a missing Windows component. “Cannot register wmi.dll” or similar wording usually means an inappropriate registration attempt, not proof that the DLL needs registering.

Use DISM and SFC for a damaged Windows system file. Use an application installer when the application owns the failing copy.

Fix 6: Separate a DLL-loading error from a WMI repository problem

The WMI repository is not the same thing as wmi.dll. It is a database-like collection used by WMI, while WMI also includes services, providers, infrastructure, and related files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A true DLL-loading error usually appears when an executable starts and specifically names wmi.dll. A repository or provider problem is more likely when:

  • WMI queries fail after Windows has started.
  • Monitoring or inventory software cannot collect data.
  • The Windows Management Instrumentation service behaves abnormally.
  • Scripts or management tools return WMI error codes such as 0x8004100E.
  • Multiple WMI providers fail without a Windows DLL message.

Verify the repository

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

If Windows reports that the repository is consistent, do not reset it merely because an application mentioned wmi.dll.

If verification reports inconsistency, Microsoft documents these commands:

winmgmt /salvagerepository
winmgmt /resetrepository

Use winmgmt /salvagerepository only after verification reports an inconsistent repository. Reserve winmgmt /resetrepository for a supported troubleshooting path because it returns the repository to its initial state and can affect custom provider registrations.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete the repository folder as a first action. That aggressive advice can remove registrations and create a second problem. Microsoft’s winmgmt documentation explains the command behavior and warnings.

Repository repair does not replace DISM or SFC when Windows reports that wmi.dll is missing.

Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when the evidence points there

A driver update is relevant when the error began after installing, removing, or updating hardware software, or when Device Manager reports a separate device problem. It is not a routine remedy for every wmi.dll message.

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category connected with the failure.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  6. Read the status on the General tab.
  7. Use Driver → Roll Back Driver only when the problem began after a recent driver update and the option is available.
  8. Otherwise select Update driver → Search automatically for drivers, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not use Device Manager to replace wmi.dll; it cannot repair Windows DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When several hardware drivers are outdated and you want to avoid hunting through manufacturer pages and guessing which package is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the detected driver problems; the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and a driver update is not the definitive fix when the application itself owns the bad DLL.

Fix 8: Use System Restore for a recent change

System Restore is useful when wmi.dll worked until a recent driver, application, or Windows change.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the affected applications and drivers.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart and complete the process.

You can also open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore.

System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. Microsoft describes this behavior in its System Restore guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If no restore point exists, or the error remains, continue with Windows recovery rather than copying a replacement DLL.

When DISM or SFC cannot repair the file

If SFC reports that it could not repair some files:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Run DISM again.
  3. Run sfc /scannow again.
  4. Review the CBS log at:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source and follow Microsoft’s repair-image guidance. The source must correspond appropriately to the installed Windows edition, build, language, and architecture. Microsoft’s update-repair guidance discusses using a repair source and the /Source and /LimitAccess options.

Further recovery choices include:

  • Completing pending Windows Update repairs.
  • Using a matching installation source for DISM.
  • Running System Restore.
  • Performing an in-place Windows repair installation using official Windows installation media.
  • Contacting Microsoft Support or following your organization’s enterprise servicing procedure.

An in-place repair installation is different from wiping the drive. Follow Microsoft’s current installation instructions carefully, confirm backups, and select the option that preserves applications and personal files when it is offered and appropriate for your system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If multiple programs report different system DLL errors, stop treating this as an isolated wmi.dll problem. Broader Windows corruption, malware, storage failure, or a bad update may be involved.

Why manual DLL downloads usually fail

A downloaded DLL may have the wrong:

  • Windows release or build
  • 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • language resources
  • dependencies
  • digital signature or provenance
  • servicing relationship with the component store

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also cause Windows to load an incompatible app-local copy. Even when the error disappears temporarily, the underlying component-store or application problem remains.

There is no Microsoft-supported standalone “wmi.dll redistributable.” Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or the official installer for the application that is actually failing.

Prevention after the repair

Once the program starts again:

  • Keep Windows Update enabled and restart when servicing requires it.
  • Install applications and drivers from their official publishers.
  • Avoid registry cleaners and DLL download repositories.
  • Keep reliable backups before major upgrades or driver changes.
  • Review antivirus quarantine before allowing a removed file.
  • Do not replace protected Windows files with copies from another computer.
  • If a launcher offers file verification, use it for the application’s own files.
  • Record the executable and path named in future errors before changing anything.

FAQ

Is wmi.dll a Windows file?

Yes. wmi.dll is associated with Microsoft Windows and WMI. Its embedded description is “WMI DC and DP functionality.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does wmi.dll belong to a particular game?

Not based on the available evidence. A game may use WMI or ship an incorrect local copy, but wmi.dll is a Windows component rather than a known game-specific runtime.

Should I download wmi.dll?

No. There is no Microsoft-supported standalone wmi.dll redistributable. Repair Windows or reinstall the application that is requesting the file.

Should I reinstall Visual C++ Redistributable?

Not as the default response. Reinstalling a runtime is appropriate when the error names a missing Visual C++ file. wmi.dll is identified with Windows and WMI.

Can I register wmi.dll with regsvr32?

Normally, no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose the required registration entry point. It is not a general Windows component repair tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if wmi.dll exists but Windows still reports it as missing?

Identify the executable and the path it is loading. The application may be using an app-local copy, the wrong architecture, or a different missing dependency. Check Event Viewer, Reliability Monitor, and application logs, then repair Windows or reinstall the affected program.

Is a WMI repository reset the fix?

Only when repository verification reports inconsistency and WMI operations are failing. A repository error, such as 0x8004100E, is different from an executable reporting that wmi.dll could not be loaded.

What if the message names wbemcomn2.dll or wbemsvc.dll instead?

Follow the same initial Windows repair path, but investigate the named file and requesting executable. Do not assume every WMI-related filename is interchangeable with wmi.dll.

Should I replace wmi.dll from another PC?

No. Different Windows builds, architectures, languages, dependencies, and servicing states make that unsafe. Use DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or the affected application’s official installer.
