What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“vtinfo2.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because vtinfo2.dll is missing,” or “Error loading vtinfo2.dll” means Windows cannot load a legacy S3 graphics utility. vtinfo2.dll belongs to S3Info Plus Utility, not to Windows itself, so the safest repair is to restore the complete S3 graphics or ScreenToys package rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The 60-second answer
vtinfo2.dll is the S3 Graphics Display Adapter Information Utility. It was used by S3Info Plus, part of the older S3 Graphics ScreenToys software family, to report information about an S3 adapter, its driver, DirectX, and related display software.
The file is associated with older S3 hardware and graphics packages, including legacy S3 Chrome, DeltaChrome, Savage, and related products. It is not a normal Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ file, .NET file, or general DirectX runtime file.
Follow this order:
- Identify the old S3 application or startup entry that is requesting the file.
- Reinstall the matching S3 graphics driver or S3Info Plus/ScreenToys package.
- Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file.
- Remove obsolete S3 startup software if the computer no longer uses S3 hardware.
- Use DISM and System File Checker only if Windows has broader corruption.
- Do not copy a random
vtinfo2.dllintoSystem32orSysWOW64.
If the error appeared after replacing an old graphics card, restoring a system image, removing a driver, uninstalling ScreenToys, or running disk cleanup, an incomplete or obsolete S3 installation is the most likely cause.

What is vtinfo2.dll?
The filename is associated with S3Info Plus Utility, published by S3 Graphics. Its recorded description is S3 Graphics Display Adapter Information Utility.
S3Info Plus was a diagnostic and information utility rather than a Windows system service. It could display details about an S3 graphics adapter, the installed display driver, DirectX, and related software. The utility was distributed with S3 Graphics software collections, including the ScreenToys family and some board or computer manufacturer driver bundles.
That distinction matters. When Windows reports that this DLL is missing, the operating system is usually trying to start an old S3 program, tray utility, control panel, or startup component. Replacing a Windows system file will not normally solve that problem.
Public records identify vtinfo2.dll as a 32-bit Win32 file. There is no reliable evidence of a separate official 64-bit version. The exact build, size, and installation directory can vary, so do not treat a version number or file size found online as a universal identifier.
Is it a Windows file?
No. Available evidence identifies vtinfo2.dll with S3 Graphics software, specifically S3Info Plus Utility.
It should not normally be supplied by Windows 10 or Windows 11, and Windows does not generally replace it through Windows Update. It also should not normally be copied manually to:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A 32-bit application usually expects its supporting DLL beside the application or in the original vendor installation directory. Putting an unrelated build into a Windows folder can create version conflicts and still leave the application unable to load its other dependencies.
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these variants:
- “This application failed to start because vtinfo2.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because vtinfo2.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading vtinfo2.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load vtinfo2.dll.”
The first two generally indicate that Windows could not find the named file. “The specified module could not be found” is more ambiguous. It can mean that vtinfo2.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing or incompatible.
The message does not prove that the DLL itself is the only damaged file. It also does not identify the exact application responsible. Look at the window title, the program name, and when the message appears:
- At sign-in: an old S3 startup entry may still be active.
- When opening a graphics utility: the S3Info Plus installation may be incomplete.
- After a driver uninstall: the utility remained while its files were removed.
- After antivirus activity: the file may have been quarantined.
- On a modern computer with different graphics hardware: obsolete S3 software may still be launching.
Fix 1: Reinstall the matching S3 package
This is the most likely and safest fix because it restores the DLL together with the executable, configuration files, and dependencies that were designed to work with it.
Step 1: Identify the S3 hardware
Press Win + X, then select Device Manager.
Expand:
- Display adapters
- System devices, if the adapter is not obvious
- Other devices, if Windows has marked old hardware as unidentified
Write down the exact graphics adapter name. Also check the computer or graphics-card manufacturer, model, and operating system compatibility.

If the computer no longer has S3 graphics hardware, do not install a random S3 package just to silence a startup message. Skip to the removal steps later in this guide.

Press Win + R, type:
appwiz.cpl
Press Enter.
Look for entries containing names such as:
- S3 Graphics
- S3Info Plus
- ScreenToys
- S3 Display
- S3 Chrome
- DeltaChrome
- Savage
On Windows 11, you can also open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and search for S3.
Do not uninstall the display driver yet if you still need to identify the hardware. Record the product name first.
Step 3: Obtain the complete package
Use the computer manufacturer’s support page or graphics-card manufacturer’s archive first. S3 Graphics’ own driver guidance tells users to check the board vendor because generic S3 packages may not match an OEM board, BIOS, or hardware revision. S3 also maintains a legacy software archive, but an archive package is not guaranteed to contain the exact build used by every computer.
Search using the exact adapter model and the original computer or board manufacturer. Prefer a complete driver and utility package over an isolated DLL.

Do not assume that every S3 driver download includes S3Info Plus or the same vtinfo2.dll. Older packages can contain different utilities and builds.
Step 4: Reinstall the package
If the vendor’s instructions call for removal:
- Open Apps → Installed apps, or Programs and Features.
- Select the old S3 graphics or ScreenToys entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the matching installer.
- Choose the complete installation when the installer offers component choices.
- Restart again.
If the installer is old and Windows blocks it, right-click the installer, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and try the compatibility mode recommended for the original software. You can also right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
Test the program that produced the error. Success means the error no longer appears and the S3 utility opens or the old startup process completes normally.
If reinstalling the package produces a different missing-DLL message, do not download that second DLL separately. The package may be incomplete, incompatible with the hardware, or missing several dependencies. Find the correct OEM package instead.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the file existed before and disappeared after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined it.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection that refers to the S3 installation directory or
vtinfo2.dll.
Do not restore the file merely because the filename looks legitimate. Check:

- Whether it was inside the original S3 installation directory.
- Whether the file came from a genuine computer or board manufacturer package.
- Whether the publisher information identifies S3 Graphics.
- Whether the installer was obtained from a trusted vendor.
- Whether the detection concerns the DLL itself or a bundled installer.
A file found in a temporary folder, an unexpected user-download directory, pirated software, or a repacked driver bundle should not be restored solely to remove the error. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and reinstall the original package instead.
If the security product confirms a false positive and the file has credible provenance, Windows Security may offer Restore or Allow on device. Afterward, reinstall or repair the complete S3 package rather than relying on the restored DLL alone.

If the computer no longer uses S3 hardware, reinstalling the old utility is usually unnecessary. Remove the component that is trying to launch it.
Remove it from startup
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for an S3, ScreenToys, S3Info, or display-information entry.
- Select it.
- Choose Disable.
Restart Windows and check whether the message returns.
Remove the old program
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps or appwiz.cpl. Uninstall the obsolete S3 utility or ScreenToys entry if it is no longer needed.
If the entry is not listed but the error continues, inspect Task Manager → Startup apps and the old application’s installation folder. Avoid deleting random DLLs or registry entries. Identify the launching executable first.

Fix 4: Restore the system after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a driver removal, software cleanup, or system-image restoration, System Restore may return the old installation state.
Press Win + R, type:
rstrui.exe
Press Enter.
Then:
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, installed programs, and system settings. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the matching S3 package installation instead.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are useful when the computer also has Windows component errors, failed updates, damaged system applications, or multiple unrelated missing-file messages. They are not the normal replacement mechanism for vtinfo2.dll, because this DLL is identified with third-party S3 software rather than a protected Windows component.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the affected program.

Microsoft’s documented order is DISM followed by SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the scan only as part of broader Windows troubleshooting. Do not expect it to download or recreate the S3 utility automatically.
When repeatedly running DISM and SFC makes it difficult to tell what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of reported Windows problems, while the full version performs repairs; it is optional, and reinstalling S3Info Plus remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 6: Check dependencies and the launching program
If the correct S3 package is installed but the error remains, the message may be coming from a different old program or from a missing dependency.
Find the executable that launches the error:
- Note the window title and the moment the message appears.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Check Startup apps for an S3-related entry.
- Check the S3 installation folder for its main executable.
- Right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Use the Details tab to identify the product and publisher.
Check the exact filename in the error. Do not confuse vtinfo2.dll with similarly named files such as s3info2.dll. They may belong to related S3 software but are not interchangeable.
If the message says “specified module could not be found” even though vtinfo2.dll is present, the executable may be missing another 32-bit dependency. Reinstall the complete package, verify that the files are in the original application directory, and check whether the package is compatible with the current Windows installation.
Does regsvr32 fix vtinfo2.dll?
Usually no.
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every missing DLL.
There is no reliable evidence that vtinfo2.dll is a COM or ActiveX DLL that needs registration. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 vtinfo2.dll
may produce an error saying that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. It also cannot restore a missing dependency, repair an incomplete S3 installation, or make an incompatible build work.
Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor’s documentation specifically says that the DLL must be registered and provides the correct path and architecture. That is not the normal repair path for vtinfo2.dll.
Should you download the DLL separately?
Generally, no.
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong build for the installed S3 utility.
- A 32-bit file where a different dependency set is required.
- A repacked or modified file.
- Malware under a familiar filename.
- A DLL that removes one message but leaves the actual broken installation untouched.
Manual copying to System32 or SysWOW64 can also cause conflicts with unrelated software. The correct location depends on the original S3 package, and the file may need other files installed alongside it.
Use the original computer manufacturer’s driver package, the graphics-card manufacturer’s archive, or S3 Graphics’ official legacy resources. If no trusted package exists and the S3 utility is no longer needed, remove the obsolete program instead of rebuilding it from isolated files.

32-bit versus 64-bit considerations
Known public records identify vtinfo2.dll as a 32-bit Win32 file. That fits the age of S3Info Plus and its legacy Windows target.
A 32-bit DLL is normally loaded by a 32-bit application. A 64-bit application cannot generally use a 32-bit DLL as its ordinary in-process dependency. This is another reason not to copy files between System32 and SysWOW64 based only on the folder names.
On 64-bit Windows, legacy 32-bit applications can often run through Windows compatibility support, but they still need the correct 32-bit DLL and related dependencies. Install the complete package intended for the exact S3 hardware and application rather than trying to convert or replace the file manually.
What if the reinstall does not work?
Work through these checks:
- Confirm the package matches the hardware. Generic S3 drivers may not support an OEM board or its BIOS.
- Confirm the application is really S3Info Plus. A similarly named utility may be requesting a different DLL.
- Check the installation directory. The DLL may be present in one old S3 folder while the startup executable points to another.
- Remove duplicate old packages. Multiple S3 driver and ScreenToys installations can leave stale startup entries.
- Run the installer with administrator rights. Old installers may fail silently without elevation.
- Use compatibility settings. The original utility may require an older Windows compatibility mode.
- Check antivirus history again. Security software may remove the file immediately after installation.
- Test whether the utility is still needed. If the graphics hardware has been replaced, uninstall the obsolete software.
- Inspect dependencies. A present DLL does not rule out a missing module required by that DLL.
- Use System Restore. This is useful when the problem began directly after a known system change.
If the error continues after these steps, identify the executable that launches it before making further changes. The right solution may be uninstalling that obsolete executable rather than restoring vtinfo2.dll.

Is vtinfo2.dll malware?
The filename is associated with legitimate S3 software, but a filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Check its location, publisher information, provenance, and antivirus result. An unexpected copy should be scanned and replaced through a trusted driver package rather than restored automatically.
Is `vtinfo2.dll part of DirectX?
S3Info Plus can report DirectX information, but that does not make vtinfo2.dll part of DirectX. There is no evidence that installing the DirectX runtime is the primary fix for this file.
Should I install Visual C++ or .NET?
Not as the first fix. No reliable evidence connects vtinfo2.dll specifically to Visual C++ Redistributables or .NET. Restore the S3Info Plus or graphics package first. Install a runtime only if the original application’s documentation explicitly requires it.
Will Windows Update restore it?
Usually not. vtinfo2.dll is associated with third-party S3 software, not a protected Windows component. Windows Update is not a substitute for the original S3 or OEM installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo I need the file on a modern PC?
Only if you still use the legacy S3 utility or hardware that depends on it. If the computer uses a newer graphics adapter, uninstall the obsolete S3 utility or disable its startup entry.
Is there an official 64-bit version?
No reliable evidence confirms a separate official 64-bit vtinfo2.dll. Treat the known file as a legacy 32-bit component and use the architecture supplied by the matching S3 package.
Can I use a file from another S3 computer?
That is not recommended. Different S3 products, driver bundles, and board vendors can use different builds and dependencies. Reinstall the matching package instead of mixing files from unrelated systems.
What is the final fix?
For an active S3 system, reinstall the complete matching OEM or S3 graphics and utility package. For a system that no longer uses S3 hardware, remove the obsolete S3Info Plus or ScreenToys component that continues to request the DLL.
