esent97.dll missing or not found errors usually mean that an older Microsoft component or legacy application was incompletely installed, damaged, quarantined, or given the wrong DLL version. The safest fix is to identify the executable requesting esent97.dll, then repair or reinstall that application from its original Microsoft or publisher-provided source instead of downloading an isolated DLL.
What this file actually does
esent97.dll is a real Microsoft library with the internal description Microsoft(R) Windows NT(TM) Server Database Storage Engine. It is associated with the legacy Extensible Storage Engine database technology and is known to appear with Microsoft Exchange and Windows XP installations.
That does not mean every current Windows installation should contain it. Modern Microsoft documentation refers to the ESE library as esent.dll, not esent97.dll. A Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer may therefore show this error because an old application expects a private legacy dependency, not because a current Windows component is necessarily missing.
Some file databases identify a 32-bit esent97.dll copy as version 6.0.3940.13 and approximately 1.06 MB. Treat those details only as identification clues. They are not proof that every copy should have that version, size, language, or hash.

The file can be connected to:
- Microsoft Exchange or another old Microsoft server component
- Windows XP system files or Windows XP installation media
- A legacy program that included or expected its own database-engine files
- An application whose installation was damaged or partially removed
The exact path and the executable that displays the message are more useful than the filename alone.
Causes and symptoms at a glance
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| An old application will not start after an update or cleanup | The application lost a private dependency | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The error appears when launching Exchange-related software | An incomplete or incompatible Exchange installation | Repair the matching Exchange release |
Windows XP Setup says it cannot copy esent97.dll |
Damaged media, optical drive, RAM, disk, or installation source | Test the media and hardware before replacing the file |
| Defender quarantined the file | A detection or false positive removed the file | Check Protection history and verify the original path |
| The file exists but the program still fails | Wrong architecture, wrong version, or a dependency of the DLL is missing | Check the application directory, event logs, and repair option |
| SFC finds no problem on Windows 10 or 11 | The file belongs to an old application rather than current Windows | Repair the calling application instead |
| The problem began after a recent install or update | A system or application change caused the failure | Use System Restore if other repairs do not help |
First, identify the program requesting the file
Do not begin by copying esent97.dll into System32. First establish which program is calling it.
Read the complete error
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because esent97.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because esent97.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting esent97.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading esent97.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “esent97.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Write down the application name shown in the window, if any. Also note whether the error appears when you:
- Start Windows
- Open a particular application
- Start a game or launcher
- Run an installer or updater
- Start an Exchange service
- Install Windows XP from optical or removable media
Find the application path
If the error appears after clicking a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Do not edit the target or add a replacement DLL yet.
If the program starts from a launcher, identify the actual application being launched rather than assuming the launcher is responsible.
You can also inspect Task Manager:
- Reproduce the error.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Look for the application process if it remains visible.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
If the error occurs during startup and no program name is shown, check Event Viewer:
- Press Win + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the message appeared.
- Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and event details.
The calling executable and its folder determine whether you should repair Windows or the application.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
This is the most likely solution when Windows 10 or Windows 11 displays the error while opening one older program.
Repair an application through Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option normally preserves the application’s data while replacing damaged program files. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.

- Open Start.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Uninstall/Change, or Repair, depending on what appears.
- Follow the installer’s repair instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Reinstall from the original source
If Repair is unavailable or unsuccessful:
- Back up the application’s documents, saved games, profiles, or databases.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the software publisher or use the original installation media.
- Install the same product release that created the error.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
- Test the application before adding unofficial files or compatibility modifications.
For a game, open its official launcher and look for Verify files, Repair, or a similarly named command. If verification reports damaged files, allow the launcher to replace them. If verification fails, reinstall the game from the publisher’s official source.
If the application is Microsoft Exchange, repair or reinstall the matching Exchange release from its official installation media. Do not copy esent97.dll from a different Exchange generation, another computer, or an unrelated application.
A successful repair should remove the original startup error. If the same message returns immediately, record the executable path and continue with the architecture and dependency checks below.
Fix 2: Check whether security software quarantined the file
Antivirus software can remove an old DLL if its behavior or age triggers a detection. Do not immediately disable protection or restore an unknown file.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection that matches the time of the
esent97.dllerror. - Expand the entry and inspect the detected file path.
- Compare that path with the legitimate application directory or original Windows location.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the original application or Microsoft installation source.
- The path matches the expected program directory.
- The file’s publisher and digital signature are trustworthy.
- You have confirmed that the detection is not a genuine threat.
If you are uncertain, do not restore it. Reinstall the parent application instead. Microsoft notes that a restored quarantined file may be detected again. After restoring a verified file, update security intelligence and run a full scan.
If the file was in an application folder, reinstalling that application remains the preferred repair. If it was supposed to be a protected Windows XP file, use Windows system-file repair rather than a random replacement.

Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this step when the error appears alongside other Windows problems, protected system files are damaged, or several built-in programs are failing. It is less likely to restore esent97.dll on a modern Windows installation if the file belongs only to an old application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when an appropriate component-store version is available.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact; focus on the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Review the CBS log, repeat the repair only when indicated, or use Windows recovery options.
- DISM could not complete the operation: Check Windows Update connectivity and restart before trying again.
Do not assume that a successful SFC scan proves the application installation is healthy. SFC repairs Windows-managed files, not every private DLL installed by third-party or legacy software.
If repeatedly running DISM and SFC is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it identifies; repair actions are performed by the full version, and it is not required when repairing the specific application is the correct solution.
Fix 4: Check architecture and file location
Most known esent97.dll references are 32-bit. A 32-bit program needs a compatible 32-bit dependency, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Do not assume that placing a 32-bit DLL in C:WindowsSystem32 will fix a 32-bit application. On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 have architecture-sensitive behavior, and Windows file-system redirection can make manual placement confusing.
Check the application folder first:
- Find the executable identified earlier.
- Open its containing folder.
- Look for the application’s own dependencies.
- Do not overwrite an existing DLL.
- Use the application’s Repair or reinstall process to restore missing files.
If the program is old, its installer may require compatibility settings or a supported update from the publisher. Compatibility mode may help an old program run, but it does not make an incompatible DLL correct.

- It is the wrong bitness.
- It is from a different product release.

- The application is loading another copy from a different directory.
“Specified module could not be found” can therefore refer to a dependency of esent97.dll, not necessarily the named file itself.
Fix 5: Use System Restore if the failure began recently
If the error appeared immediately after installing software, applying an update, changing a driver, or running a cleanup utility, System Restore may reverse the change.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Save open work and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. Test the affected program after Windows starts.
If no suitable restore point exists, return to the application’s official repair or reinstall process.

Fix 6: Handle Windows XP installation errors correctly
Windows XP Setup may display a message such as:
Setup cannot copy the file: esent97.dll
If this happens while installing XP, especially alongside several other “cannot copy” errors, do not assume that one missing DLL is the root cause.
Possible causes include:
- Damaged or poorly created installation media
- A failing optical drive or removable drive
- Scratched media
- Defective RAM
- A failing hard disk
- A damaged installation source
Try the following in order:
- Clean the installation disc if you are using optical media.
- Try a known-good installation disc or verified installation source.
- Test another optical or removable drive.
- Check the computer’s memory.
- Check the target disk for errors.
- Restart Setup and note whether different files fail to copy.
If only esent97.dll fails and the installation source is known to be good, the media or drive can still be the problem. Replacing the file from a download site is not a reliable installation repair.
Windows XP support ended on April 8, 2014. If XP is required for a legacy application, isolate it from the internet where practical, preserve the original installation media, and plan migration or an isolated legacy virtual machine rather than continuing to substitute individual DLLs.

regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It registers a DLL by calling that library’s exported DllRegisterServer function.

It may instead produce an error stating that the module could not be loaded or that the entry point was not found. Registration is appropriate only when the software’s documentation specifically requires it and the DLL is designed to support registration.
Do not register esent97.dll merely because its filename ends in .dll.

Are Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or Windows Features relevant?
Usually not.
There is no verified Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET package specifically intended to install esent97.dll. Installing unrelated runtimes can add unnecessary software without repairing the application that requested the file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLikewise, enabling a random item under Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off is not a targeted fix for this DLL. Do not enable legacy components unless the affected application’s official documentation requires them.
Driver updates are also generally irrelevant unless the error appeared with broader hardware failures. If Device Manager shows a separate problem:
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the status under the General tab.
- Use Update driver only for the device with the reported problem.
- Restart and test again.
Do not update drivers merely because esent97.dll is missing. A driver will not normally restore an application’s private database library.
If you are manually checking many devices and cannot tell which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies what it finds; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required for an application-specific esent97.dll repair.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download esent97.dll from an arbitrary DLL repository or copy it from another computer. That approach can introduce:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- A mismatched Exchange or application release
- Digital-signature problems
- Further version conflicts
- A file that hides the original installation failure
There is no verified official standalone Microsoft download intended for esent97.dll. The safe sources are the original Windows or Exchange installation media, the affected application’s official installer, Windows component repair, and a supported update from the software publisher.
Never overwrite a file in System32 or `SysWOW64 simply because an error message names a DLL. That can damage a protected component or cause another program to load an incompatible library.
When to escalate the problem
Collect this information before contacting the software vendor or administrator:
- The complete error message
- The name and path of the calling executable
- Your Windows edition and architecture
- Whether the application is Microsoft Exchange, Windows XP Setup, or another legacy program
- The path where
esent97.dllwas expected - Whether the file is absent, quarantined, or present
- The file’s digital-signature status
- The result of DISM and SFC
- Relevant Event Viewer entries
- Whether the issue began after an uninstall, update, restore, cleanup, or security detection
If SFC reports no problems but the application still fails, inspect the application directory, launcher logs, Event Viewer, and the program’s own repair mechanism. If every repair attempt fails, migration to a supported application or an isolated legacy environment is safer than continuing with DLL substitution.
FAQ
Is esent97.dll a Windows file or an Exchange file?
It can be associated with both. It appears in Windows XP file inventories and is also associated with Microsoft Exchange. On modern Windows, an error involving it more often points to an old application or legacy component than to a normal current Windows dependency.
Should I download esent97.dll?
No. Use the original application installer, Exchange media, Windows repair tools, or a supported vendor update. An isolated download may be malicious, incompatible, or unable to fix the real cause.
Will SFC restore esent97.dll?
Only if the file is part of the Windows installation being repaired and a matching protected copy is available. Modern Windows may not contain this legacy component, so SFC can report that Windows is healthy while the old application remains broken.
Why does the message say “module not found” when the file exists?
A dependency loaded by esent97.dll may be missing, blocked, damaged, or incompatible. The message does not always mean that the named file itself is absent.
Does regsvr32 esent97.dll fix the problem?
Usually no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that implement DllRegisterServer; it is not a general repair command for database-engine libraries.
Can I copy the file into System32?
Do not do this as a general fix. The application may require a private 32-bit copy, and placing a mismatched file in a Windows directory can create additional conflicts.
What if the error appears during Windows XP Setup?
Treat repeated copy failures as a possible media, drive, RAM, or disk problem. Test those causes before replacing individual files, and plan migration because Windows XP is unsupported.
