“fwdprov.dll” error messages
You may see one of these messages when Windows or an older application starts:
- “The program can’t start because fwdprov.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because fwdprov.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading fwdprov.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file fwdprov.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “fwdprov.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”
fwdprov.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file associated with Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI. It is not a Visual C++ runtime file, DirectX component, or ordinary application DLL.
The 60-second answer
Do not download fwdprov.dll from a random DLL website or copy an old version from another computer.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, install pending Windows updates, then open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

Historically, fwdprov.dll was located at:
%WINDIR%System32Wbemfwdprov.dll
Microsoft documents %WINDIR%System32Wbem as the location used for WMI provider DLLs in its WMI architecture documentation. The exact file layout can vary by Windows release and architecture, so do not force a historical copy into a modern installation.
If the error affects only one old program, repair or reinstall that program after repairing Windows.
What fwdprov.dll does
The filename refers to a WMI forwarding provider component. WMI is a Windows management framework that allows the operating system, administrative tools, scripts, services, and applications to query system information and receive management events.
A WMI provider supplies information or functionality to WMI. Historical Windows component records associate fwdprov.dll with forwarding event providers and forwarding event consumers.

The program may be using a Windows management function, while Windows is responsible for supplying the component.
Public records for older Windows releases identify the file as a Microsoft Windows component and show an old 32-bit version. That historical version should not be treated as the correct file for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft does not provide a current standalone download page for fwdprov.dll.
Is fwdprov.dll legitimate or malware
The name itself is legitimate. A file called fwdprov.dll in the normal Windows WMI directory may be a genuine Microsoft component.
The path matters:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
text
%WINDIR%System32Wbem
- Press Enter.
- Look for
fwdprov.dll. - Right-click it, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures if that tab is present.
- Select the signer and click Details.
A copy found in an application’s temporary folder, Downloads, a user profile, or an unrelated program directory deserves more caution. Do not assume it is genuine merely because the filename is correct.

Review the original path, detection name, and publisher information. Do not restore a quarantined file until you have confirmed that it was a genuine Windows component and that the detection was not valid. If malware is possible, scan the computer first.
Why the error appears
The message does not prove that fwdprov.dll itself is missing. Windows can display a named DLL error when:
- The file was deleted or quarantined.
- The file is damaged.
- A Windows component store is corrupted.
- A required dependency cannot be loaded.
- The file belongs to an old Windows installation that is no longer compatible.
- A program or installer has damaged its WMI-related configuration.
- The calling application is the wrong architecture.
- A cleanup utility or failed update removed or changed system files.
- Malware removal altered the installation.
- The error comes from a damaged application rather than Windows itself.
The timing is useful. An error appearing during startup, Windows management activity, or several unrelated programs points toward Windows corruption. An error appearing only when launching one legacy application points toward that application, its installer, or its compatibility with the current Windows release.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Pending updates can include component repairs and compatibility fixes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Test the program that reported
fwdprov.dll.
If Windows Update fails, record the error code before moving on. Do not repeatedly retry an update without repairing the component store.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most appropriate first repair for a missing or damaged Windows WMI component.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. It may appear to pause for a while, so leave the window open until it reports a result.

Run System File Checker
In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Understand the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” Windows did not find damaged protected files.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
- DISM cannot find source files. Install pending updates or provide matching Windows installation media as a repair source. The source must correspond to the same Windows version and edition.
Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance explains DISM repair sources. Microsoft’s SFC command documentation describes the available scan options.
If you want to reduce the manual work of checking system components and repeating repair steps, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM and SFC remain the official repair path.
Run a targeted scan only when appropriate
If this path exists on your installation, you can ask SFC to check the specific file:

Use this only when the file is actually present at that path. A missing result does not mean you should copy a replacement file there. If the targeted scan fails, return to full DISM and SFC repair or use Windows recovery options.
Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If only one program reports the error, Windows may be healthy and the program’s installation may be damaged.
First identify which component is producing the message:
- Note the exact program name in the error window.
- Check whether other programs start normally.
- Start a different application that uses the same Windows account.
- If only one program fails, continue with its repair options.
For a Microsoft Store application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Click the three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, choose Reset if available.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Click Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it from the original vendor or installation media. Do not allow the installer to place an arbitrary fwdprov.dll in the application folder.

Compatibility mode may help an obsolete application, but it cannot make an incompatible system DLL safe to use.
Fix 4: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Windows Features are not a general solution for fwdprov.dll. WMI is a core Windows management framework, not normally something you repair by randomly enabling features.
Check optional features when the affected program specifically requires one:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the feature named in the application’s documentation or installer.
- Enable it only if the program requires it.
- Click OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not disable WMI-related services or randomly toggle features to make the error disappear. That can create additional management and application problems.
Fix 5: Check drivers when the error follows hardware or a driver installation
fwdprov.dll is not itself a device driver. However, a program that uses WMI may fail after a damaged chipset, storage, security, or device-management driver installation.
Check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or Uninstall Device only when the timing and device identity support that choice.
- Restart Windows.
Download drivers from the PC, motherboard, or device manufacturer rather than a generic DLL site. If the failure began immediately after a driver update, Roll Back Driver may be safer than installing an unrelated replacement.
If manually identifying outdated hardware is taking longer than expected, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows what is wrong, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source when you know the exact device.
Fix 6: Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file
A security product can remove a legitimate file, but restoring it without checking the detection can reintroduce malware.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Expand entries related to
fwdprov.dll. - Review the original location and detection details.
- Check whether the file was in the Windows WMI directory.
- Scan the computer before restoring anything.
- Restore it only if its identity and original path are verified.
Microsoft explains the process in its Protection History guidance. If the file was outside the expected Windows directory, leave it quarantined and investigate the system instead.
After a confirmed false positive, update Windows Security and run DISM followed by SFC. Servicing Windows is safer than downloading another copy.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began after an update, application installation, cleanup operation, or driver change and a restore point exists.
From the desktop:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Click Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
If Windows cannot start normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment:
Recommended Free Tools
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart, or boot into recovery after failed starts.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose System Restore.
- Select an administrator account.
- Choose an available restore point.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can change monitored system files, drivers, applications, and registry settings. Microsoft describes its behavior in the System Restore documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Repair Windows with matching installation media
If DISM cannot repair the component store and System Restore is unavailable, use Windows installation media that matches the installed release, edition, and architecture.
Do not use a random ISO or an older Windows image simply because it contains a file with the same name. A mismatched image can create more component errors.

Should you run regsvr32 fwdprov.dll
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It works only when the DLL exposes the optional DllRegisterServer entry point. A WMI system component should normally be restored through Windows servicing, not manually registered.
Running this command:
regsvr32 fwdprov.dll
may produce “DllRegisterServer was not found.” That result means the particular DLL does not support that registration method. It does not prove that Windows is missing a generic registration step.
Microsoft explains the limitation in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation. Do not use repeated regsvr32 commands as a substitute for DISM, SFC, or application repair.
Do not download or cross-copy the DLL
Avoid DLL download repositories and file-sharing pages. A downloaded replacement may be:
Recommended Free Tools
- Modified or malicious.
- The wrong Windows version.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing a required dependency.
- Unsigned or incorrectly signed.
- Incompatible with the calling application.
- Unable to repair the underlying component store problem.
Do not copy a historical 32-bit Windows XP file into a modern 64-bit Windows installation. System32 and SysWOW64 have special Windows redirection behavior, and the correct file layout depends on the operating system and calling process.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM repair content, matching Microsoft installation media, System Restore, and the original application vendor’s installer.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Historical records identify an older 32-bit fwdprov.dll, but that does not establish what belongs in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may use redirected system paths. A 64-bit process may require a different system component layout. Do not decide where to place the file based solely on the name of the folder or the architecture of an old download.
Let Windows servicing restore the correct copy. If only a 32-bit legacy application fails, repair that application and check its compatibility rather than copying a 32-bit DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.
When to escalate
Use deeper recovery when:
- DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows.
- The error returns after every restart.
- Several unrelated applications fail.
- Windows Update itself is damaged.
- The file is repeatedly quarantined.
- Event Viewer reports broader WMI or component errors.
- The computer may have malware.
- The installation is an obsolete Windows release such as Windows XP.
- The application is no longer compatible with the current Windows version.
For persistent failures, inspect Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application and System, review the affected program’s installation logs, and run an offline malware scan. An in-place Windows repair is appropriate when Windows servicing cannot restore the installation. If only one legacy program remains affected, contact its vendor or replace it with a supported application.
FAQ
Is fwdprov.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is identified as a Microsoft Windows Operating System component with the internal description “WMI.” Its historical role is connected to WMI forwarding event providers and consumers.
Where should fwdprov.dll be?
Historical Windows inventories place it in:
%WINDIR%System32Wbemfwdprov.dll
The exact current presence, version, and architecture arrangement can depend on the Windows build. Verify the path rather than copying a file into it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is fwdprov.dll part of Visual C++?
There is no verified reason to install Visual C++ merely because this filename appears in an error. The evidence identifies fwdprov.dll as a Windows WMI component.
Does “specified module could not be found” mean the DLL is missing?
No. Windows may be unable to load a dependency even when the named DLL exists. DISM, SFC, application repair, and event-log review are more useful than immediately replacing the named file.
Should I enable WMI in Windows Features?
Usually not. WMI is a core Windows management framework. Randomly changing optional features will not normally repair a damaged WMI component.
Can I register the DLL with regsvr32?
Do not use regsvr32 as the normal repair. It only applies to DLLs that support self-registration, and there is no general Microsoft procedure directing users to register this file manually.
What if the error says the file is not designed to run on Windows?
Treat that as a compatibility, corruption, wrong-architecture, or invalid-binary problem. Repair Windows or the affected application. Do not rename, overwrite, or replace the file with a copy from another Windows generation.
What is the safest first step?
Install pending Windows updates, run DISM, run SFC, restart, and then repair the affected application if it is the only program that fails.
