When Windows reports that fmtcp8.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the old I.R.I.S. OCR application that installed it, most clearly Readiris Pro 10.
Do not begin by downloading a loose copy of the DLL. That approach often installs the wrong version, wrong architecture, or a tampered file while leaving the damaged Readiris installation untouched.
What is fmtcp8.dll?
Available historical file inventories identify fmtcp8.dll as the fmtcp8 component from I.R.I.S. Group. It is associated most clearly with Readiris Pro 10, an older application for working with scanned documents, PDFs, and image files.
The file is not known to be:
- A Windows system DLL
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file
- A DirectX component
- A scanner-driver file
- A general-purpose file shared by every Windows application
Historical third-party metadata reports a Win32, 32-bit DLL with the internal description fmtcp8. That information describes reported older builds, not a current vendor specification for every copy ever distributed.

The exact folder varies by installation. A 32-bit Readiris application commonly keeps its own files under a program folder rather than in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
What the error usually means
Common reports include:
- “fmtcp8.dll is missing”
- “fmtcp8.dll was not found”
- “Cannot find fmtcp8.dll”
- “Error loading fmtcp8.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because fmtcp8.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file fmtcp8.dll is missing or corrupted.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
If the file was deleted, reinstalling the parent application should restore it. If the message says “the specified module could not be found,” fmtcp8.dll may exist but one of its dependencies may be missing. In either case, replacing one DLL from an unrelated website is not a reliable repair.
Before changing anything, note:
- The exact application that displays the error.
- Whether the problem began after reinstalling, uninstalling, cleaning the disk, restoring a backup, or moving a program folder.
- Whether antivirus software quarantined a file.
- Whether the original Readiris installer is still available.
- Whether the message names
fmtcp8.dllitself or another missing module.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely solution when Readiris or another old I.R.I.S. program is the application that fails.
If Readiris is still installed
- Close Readiris and any related document-processing windows.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Readiris or the affected I.R.I.S. application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall if no repair option is offered.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer again.
- If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, select Yes.
- Install the application to its normal program location.
- Restart Windows again before launching it.
Some older installers provide a Repair option instead of requiring removal. If you see Repair, use it first. A repair installation is preferable because it can restore missing application files without removing configuration that the program still needs.

If Readiris is no longer listed
Use the original Readiris installer if you have it. If not, check the official IRIS Download Center or contact IRIS support for the applicable legacy product. Older Readiris products are end-of-life, and IRIS does not guarantee that they will work correctly on current Windows releases.
Do not use a repackaged installer from a file-sharing page. The installer must be from IRIS or from media you trust and can verify.
Check whether the repair worked
Launch the same application that produced the message. A successful repair should do more than make the error disappear briefly:
- Readiris should open without the
fmtcp8.dllmessage. - A document or image should load normally.
- The application should be able to perform its OCR or conversion task.
- The error should not return after a restart.
If the same message returns immediately, the installer may be incomplete, the file may be quarantined again, or the application may not be compatible with the current Windows release.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove an old application DLL, particularly when the file has no modern signature or comes from legacy software. Do not disable antivirus protection broadly and do not restore the file blindly.
Review Protection History
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event mentioning
fmtcp8.dll, Readiris, or the folder where Readiris was installed. - Open the event to view its details.
- Record the original file path and the action taken.
Before restoring anything, verify all of the following:
- The file was originally inside the trusted Readiris installation folder.
- The application was installed from an original or official IRIS installer.
- The quarantine record identifies the same file and path.
- A current Microsoft Defender scan does not identify broader malware activity.
- You are restoring the application’s file, not a DLL copied from the internet.
If the file came from an unknown installer, was found in a temporary folder, or has been modified outside the application installation, leave it quarantined and reinstall Readiris from a trusted source instead.
If Protection History repeatedly removes the file after a clean reinstall, stop restoring it repeatedly. Run a full scan and investigate whether the installer or the application files have been altered.

A damaged uninstall can leave behind an incomplete program folder or registry information that causes the next installation to fail.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Uninstall Readiris or the affected I.R.I.S. program.
- Restart Windows.
- Open File Explorer.
- Check the former installation folder.
- Delete leftover files only if you are certain they belong to the removed application and you have preserved any documents or settings you need.
- Restart Windows again.
- Run the trusted original installer as an administrator:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Show more options if necessary.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation without moving individual DLLs afterward.
- Restart and test the application.
If the installer fails, record the exact installer message. If the application now reports a different missing file, that is useful evidence: fmtcp8.dll may have been restored and the remaining problem may be another dependency or an operating-system compatibility issue.
Fix 4: Confirm the application architecture
Historical metadata identifies fmtcp8.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That fits an older 32-bit Readiris application. A 64-bit replacement DLL cannot repair a 32-bit application.

C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another computer
- Another Readiris installation
- A random program folder
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is used for 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Those names are confusing, but neither folder is the correct general destination for an application-owned DLL.
The correct architecture fix is to install the complete application package intended for the affected Readiris release. If Readiris itself is too old to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, use a supported IRIS product or run the legacy application in an environment appropriate for older software.
Fix 5: Investigate compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11
Readiris Pro 10 is an obsolete product. A missing-DLL message can sometimes be the first visible symptom of a wider compatibility problem rather than a simple deleted file.
After reinstalling from a trusted installer:
- Right-click the Readiris shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the application’s documentation or installer requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch Readiris and test it.
Compatibility mode is a secondary measure, not a substitute for restoring the complete program. If the application still fails, contact IRIS or move to a currently supported product. Do not assume that a legacy installer will work reliably on every current Windows configuration.

fmtcp8.dll is not identified as a Windows component, so Windows repair commands are unlikely to recreate it. They are appropriate when other Windows features are also failing or when you suspect protected system-file corruption.
Run Windows Update first:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
Then run DISM and SFC from an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Readiris again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a dependable way to restore a third-party Readiris library.

Fix 7: Check dependencies without guessing at runtimes
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows found fmtcp8.dll but could not load a dependency it requires.

Do not automatically install every version of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. No verified evidence establishes that fmtcp8.dll itself belongs to a particular Microsoft runtime.
Instead:
- Reinstall the complete Readiris application first.
- Read the application’s own installation instructions.
- Check whether the installer includes required runtimes.
- Install a Microsoft runtime only when the application documentation or a separate error specifically identifies it.
- Match x86 packages to a 32-bit application and x64 packages to a 64-bit application when Microsoft’s documentation calls for that architecture.
If reinstalling Readiris produces a new error naming a specific runtime, address that separate error rather than treating every DLL message as the same problem.

A scanner driver can prevent Readiris from importing scans, but that does not establish that the scanner driver owns fmtcp8.dll. Update the driver only when the error appears during scanner detection or Windows reports a device problem.

- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers, depending on the scanner.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the scanner.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the scanner.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain the driver from the scanner manufacturer rather than a generic driver-download page. What not to do
Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL download websites can provide:
- Malware or modified files
- The wrong historical build
- A 64-bit file for a 32-bit application
- A file with missing dependencies
- A DLL that belongs to a different product
Even when the downloaded file has the right name, it may not match the rest of the Readiris installation. Use the original installer or the official IRIS download and support channels.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Windows applications normally search their own installation directory as part of DLL loading. Copying an application library into a system folder can create version conflicts and security problems. It can also leave the application looking at a file that does not match its other components.
Do not register it with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Running a registration command against an ordinary application library can produce an error that the entry point was not found. There is no verified vendor instruction showing that fmtcp8.dll should be registered, so do not use regsvr32 for this file.
Do not assume SFC repairs every DLL
SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally restore an application-owned Readiris component. Use it when Windows itself shows corruption, not as the first response to this particular error.

Do not disable antivirus permanently
If antivirus software quarantined the file, investigate its original path and provenance. Do not create a broad exclusion for the program folder just to make the error disappear.
When System Restore makes sense
Use System Restore only when the failure clearly started after a recent software installation, update, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Continue only if you understand what will be rolled back.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents, but you should still back up important files first.
FAQ
Is fmtcp8.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with an I.R.I.S. application component, most clearly Readiris Pro 10.
Which program installed fmtcp8.dll?
Readiris Pro 10 is the clearest identified match. Other historical I.R.I.S. OCR products may also have used related components, so identify the exact application shown in the error before removing or reinstalling anything.

Only when a suitable restore point predates the failure and the problem clearly followed a recent system or application change. For most cases, repairing the parent application is more direct.
