commonforms.dll is usually an application file, not a Windows system component. If commonforms.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the program that uses it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The strongest match is the legacy AVG PC TuneUp 2011 application. A known AVG-associated copy is located at:

C:Program Files (x86)AVGAVG PC Tuneup 2011commonforms.dll
That copy is identified as Common Forms, version 10.0.0.22, and approximately 1.48 MB. However, the filename is not unique. Report Viewer Limited’s The Report Viewer 5 also used a file named CommonForms.dll, so identify the path and parent program before choosing a repair.
1. Identify which application owns commonforms.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Do not start by copying a file into C:WindowsSystem32. First determine which program is generating the error.

Check the error window
Read the complete message and note the executable named in it. The application may show messages such as:
The program can't start because commonforms.dll is missing from your computer.
Error loading commonforms.dll. The specified module could not be found.
Failed to load commonforms.dll.
These messages identify a loading problem, but they do not prove that the DLL itself is missing. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that another file required by commonforms.dll is absent.
Check the file path
If a copy of the file remains on the computer:
- Press
Windows+Eto open File Explorer. - Search for
commonforms.dll. - Right-click each result and select Open file location.
- Look at the folders above the file.
An AVG-related path should resemble:
C:Program Files (x86)AVGAVG PC Tuneup 2011
A Report Viewer installation will use a different application directory. A copy in a temporary folder, Downloads, an unfamiliar game folder or C:WindowsSystem32 should not automatically be trusted.
Check file details and signature
Right-click the DLL, select Properties, and inspect:
Recommended Free Tools
- Details: product name, file description and version
- Digital Signatures: publisher and signature status
- Location: the application directory containing the file
The known AVG-associated version is 10.0.0.22, but the filename alone cannot prove that a file is genuine. Do not treat an unsigned copy or a copy from an unrelated directory as an AVG file.
If the error names AVG PC TuneUp or its executable, continue with the AVG repair steps below. If it names another application, repair that application instead.
2. Repair AVG PC TuneUp or its parent application
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Repairing the parent application is the safest first fix because it restores the DLL together with the matching executable, configuration files and dependencies.
Look for a repair option
- Press
Windows+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find AVG PC TuneUp, AVG TuneUp or the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu, if available.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Look for Repair and select it.
- Restart Windows after the repair completes.
Older programs may instead provide a repair entry through Control Panel:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the AVG application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart.
Try the program again. If it starts normally, the repair restored the correct application files.
Reinstall when repair is unavailable or unsuccessful
If there is no repair option, or the error remains:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the AVG TuneUp or PC TuneUp entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall using a legitimate AVG installer or the original licensed installation media.
- Run the installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Start the program and check whether the error has gone.
Do not mix files from a current AVG TuneUp installation with an old PC TuneUp 2011 folder. A current installer may not recreate the exact legacy environment used by PC TuneUp 2011. If the old installer is unavailable, the practical choice may be to remove the obsolete program rather than revive it with unverified files.
3. Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may remove or quarantine an application DLL after a detection. This is especially relevant if the program stopped working after an antivirus scan or update.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Review Windows Security history
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection that refers to AVG, PC TuneUp or
commonforms.dll.
Only consider restoring a file when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the original application installation.
- Its path matches the installed program.
- Its publisher signature is valid and appropriate.
- The detection is confirmed to be a false positive.
If those conditions are met, choose Actions → Restore, if Windows offers that action. Then repair or reinstall the parent application rather than relying on the restored copy.
Microsoft warns that a restored detection may be detected again. Do not create a security exclusion merely to make an unknown DLL run. If the file is unsigned, came from a random download site or has an unexpected path, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete application from legitimate media.
4. Reinstall the complete application when the DLL exists but still fails
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A file can exist and still fail because it is the wrong version, damaged, blocked or accompanied by missing files.
Use this sequence:
- Close the affected program.
- Uninstall the parent application from Settings or Control Panel.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the old application folder remains.
- Do not manually copy files out of that folder. Remove the leftover folder only if it clearly belongs to the uninstalled program and you have no needed settings or data there.
- Install the application again from the vendor’s installer or original media.
- Restart once more.
- Launch the program using its normal Start menu shortcut.
If reinstalling restores commonforms.dll but the error remains, the message may refer to a dependency. Check the Windows event details:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
text
eventvwr.msc
- Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the program failed.
- Note any different DLL or runtime named in the event.
Install Visual C++ or .NET only when the application documentation, event log or reliable dependency analysis identifies that runtime. Installing random runtime packages is not a general fix for commonforms.dll.
5. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The known AVG PC TuneUp 2011 entry is associated with a 32-bit version, 10.0.0.22. A 32-bit application normally belongs under Program Files (x86) even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
That does not mean every file named commonforms.dll is 32-bit. Confirm the actual file’s properties and the application that loads it.
Check the installation location:
C:Program Files (x86)commonly contains 32-bit applications.C:Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications.
The folder name is useful evidence, not proof of the binary architecture. A 64-bit replacement copied into a 32-bit application folder, or a DLL from another product, can produce a new loading error.
The reliable fix is to reinstall the matching parent program and let its installer place the correct architecture and companion files. Do not copy a file from another computer simply because its name matches.
6. Use the application’s own verification or repair feature
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Some launchers provide a file verification function even when Windows does not show a repair button.
Open the program’s launcher or maintenance utility and look for wording such as:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

7. Repair Windows components only when broader corruption is suspected
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
commonforms.dll is associated with third-party applications, not with Windows itself. Therefore, Windows component repair is not the primary way to restore it. Use these commands when other Windows programs are also failing, Windows updates are damaged or system files show signs of corruption.
First install available Windows updates and restart. Then run DISM followed by System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
text
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore an AVG application DLL.

Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A graphics, storage or other driver is not the normal cause of an AVG application DLL being absent. Consider a driver update only if Device Manager shows a warning, the event log names a driver or several applications began failing after a hardware or driver change.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the error.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:

- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale without manually checking many hardware vendors; the full version performs driver installation. Do not use a driver update as a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns commonforms.dll.
9. Do not register commonforms.dll with regsvr32
Time needed: 1 minute
This command is often suggested for every missing DLL:
regsvr32 commonforms.dll
It is not a general missing-DLL repair. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that this application-support DLL is a COM or ActiveX component that requires registration.
Running the command may produce an error such as:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That result does not mean the file needs a different copy. Repair the parent application instead. Microsoft’s documentation explains when regsvr32 is appropriate.

10. Avoid standalone DLL download sites
Time needed: 1–5 minutes
Do not download commonforms.dll from an arbitrary DLL website and place it in System32, SysWOW64 or the application folder.
A standalone file may be:
- The wrong product’s DLL
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or malicious
- Missing companion files
- Unsigned or signed by an unexpected publisher
System-wide placement can also cause version conflicts. The application may require its DLL beside its own executable, not in a Windows system directory.
Use the AVG installer or original installation media for an AVG-related copy. For a Report Viewer copy, use that product’s legitimate installer. If the vendor no longer provides the old application, preserve original licensed media or contact the vendor rather than combining files from different releases.
Common causes of the error
| Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| AVG PC TuneUp was damaged or partially uninstalled | Repair, then uninstall and reinstall the parent application |
| Antivirus quarantined the DLL | Verify its origin and signature, then repair or reinstall |
| Cleanup software removed application files | Reinstall the complete application |
| The wrong DLL architecture or version was used | Reinstall the matching product and do not mix files |
| A dependency is missing | Check the event log and use the application installer |
| Windows components are corrupted | Update Windows, then run DISM followed by SFC |
| The application is obsolete | Remove it if the original installer is unavailable or unsupported |
| The file belongs to another product | Identify the path and repair that product instead |
What to do if none of the fixes work
Test another Windows user account
If the application fails only in one profile:
- Open Settings → Accounts → Other users.
- Add a test local user.
- Sign in to that account.
- Try launching the application.
If it works there, the DLL may not be the problem. Repair the original profile’s permissions or application settings instead of replacing the file.
Try System Restore cautiously
Use System Restore only when a restore point predates the failure and normal application repair is unavailable.
- Open Start and search for Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the programs and settings that will be affected.
- Back up personal data before proceeding.
- Complete the restore and test the application.
System Restore can roll back installed programs and settings. It does not make an untrusted DLL safe.
Decide whether the old application should remain installed
PC TuneUp 2011 is a legacy product. If the original installer cannot be found, a current AVG installer does not recreate the old environment, or the application is no longer needed, uninstalling it is safer than forcing it to run with mixed or downloaded files.
FAQ
Is commonforms.dll a Windows file?
No evidence establishes commonforms.dll as a file shipped with Windows. It is associated with third-party applications and should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes every commonforms.dll belong to AVG?
No. AVG PC TuneUp 2011 is a strong match for the supplied path and version, but Report Viewer Limited’s The Report Viewer 5 also used the same filename. Check the parent directory and application metadata.
Is the known file 32-bit?
The known AVG-associated entry is reported as a 32-bit file, version 10.0.0.22. Verify the actual binary rather than trusting the filename or an inconsistent third-party listing.
Will SFC fix commonforms.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this DLL belongs to an application. Use the AVG or other parent application’s repair or reinstall process first.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the application documentation, event log or dependency analysis identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime. It is not the standard repair for this filename.
Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file exists?
The DLL may be damaged, the wrong version, blocked, or dependent on another missing module. Reinstall the parent application and inspect the Application log if the error continues.
Can I use regsvr32?
Not by default. regsvr32 applies to DLLs designed for registration. It is not a general repair for an application-support DLL and may report that DllRegisterServer is missing.
What is the safest final fix?
Identify the application from its path and error message, then repair or reinstall that complete application using the vendor’s installer or original installation media. Do not replace commonforms.dll with a random standalone download.
