Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutemidisyn.dll errors may read “The program can’t start because midisyn.dll is missing from your computer,” “This application failed to start because midisyn.dll was not found,” or “Error loading midisyn.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
The safest fix is to restore the complete SoundMAX audio-driver and Control Panel package made for your computer, not to download midisyn.dll by itself. This is a legacy Analog Devices SoundMAX component, so the correct installer depends on the computer or motherboard manufacturer and the original audio hardware.
What causes a midisyn.dll error
midisyn.dll is identified as SMax3CP DLL and belongs to the SoundMAX Control Panel application’s MIDI Music Synthesizer component. The control panel used this component to provide MIDI synthesizer settings and sound-set controls.
It is not a normal Windows component. It is also not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Windows Update, Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, and DirectX installers should not be expected to supply it.

The error usually follows one of these changes:
- SoundMAX was uninstalled or only partly removed.
- An audio-driver update replaced the old control-panel component.
- A legacy system image was restored incompletely.
- Disk cleanup removed files belonging to the old application.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The installed package does not match the computer or operating system.
midisyn.dllexists, but one of its dependent files is missing.- An obsolete SoundMAX startup or control-panel entry still tries to load it.
- Windows has broader component corruption.
A startup error does not always mean that an application you actively use needs the file. It may be an old SoundMAX control-panel entry launching in the background.
First, identify what is calling the file
Before replacing anything, determine whether the affected program is SoundMAX itself.
If the error appears when opening SoundMAX
The SoundMAX Control Panel or its MIDI Music Synthesizer tab is the likely owner. Reinstall the matching OEM audio package using the steps below.
If the error appears when another program starts
Note the program name in the error window. A separate legacy application may be trying to load a SoundMAX component. Repair or reinstall that application only if its installer is known to include SoundMAX support. There is no reliable evidence that a current game or general-purpose application should ship this file.
If the error appears at every startup
Look for an obsolete SoundMAX entry:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries mentioning SoundMAX, Analog Devices, audio control panel, or a similar legacy name.
- Select an entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling an obsolete startup entry can stop the message, but it does not repair an active audio driver. Do not disable audio software if you still need its controls. If you are unsure which entry is involved, repair the OEM package first.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete OEM SoundMAX package
This is the most likely and safest solution.
midisyn.dll normally arrives as part of a larger SoundMAX package containing the audio driver, control-panel files, MIDI components, and synthesizer data. A separate DLL copy may be the wrong version, wrong architecture, or missing the dependencies that the control panel needs.
Find the correct package
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
msinfo32. - Press Enter.
- Record the System Manufacturer, System Model, and System Type.
- Close System Information.
- If this is a custom desktop, identify the motherboard manufacturer and exact model instead.
- Open the manufacturer’s official support page on another working device if necessary.
- Search for the exact model and its Audio, SoundMAX, or chipset/audio driver downloads.
- Choose the package matching the original hardware and operating system.
Prefer the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support page, original recovery media, or a verified archived OEM driver package that matches the hardware. A current generic audio driver may not contain the old SoundMAX Control Panel.
There is no current official standalone Analog Devices midisyn.dll download that should be treated as the universal solution.
Remove or repair the existing package
If the installer offers Repair, use it first. Otherwise:

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for SoundMAX, Analog Devices, or the computer manufacturer’s audio-control software.
- Select the three dots beside the entry.
- Choose Uninstall if the package is clearly damaged.
- Restart the computer.
- Run the matching OEM audio installer as administrator.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation and restart again.
On older Windows installations, use:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the SoundMAX or audio-control-panel entry.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the wizard and restart.
How to tell whether it worked
After restarting:
- Open the SoundMAX Control Panel if it is still installed.
- Open the MIDI Music Synthesizer tab if available.
- Start the program that previously displayed the error.
- Check whether the startup message has disappeared.
If the installer says the hardware is unsupported, do not force it. The computer may no longer use SoundMAX, or the old control panel may not work with the current Windows release.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove or quarantine an old executable component. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
midisyn.dll. - Expand the event and read the detection name, file path, and action.
- If the file came from the original matching OEM installer, compare it with that package before restoring it.
- Restore the item only when its origin is verified.
- If Windows Security offers Allow on device, use it only after verification.
- Reinstall the complete OEM package instead of relying on the restored individual file.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
If the file is detected again, stop. Repeated detection is not proof of a false positive. Leave it quarantined and obtain a fresh, verified package from the computer or motherboard manufacturer.

Do not disable antivirus merely to copy a downloaded DLL into a Windows folder.
Fix 3: Check architecture and package compatibility
The available catalog information describes midisyn.dll as a Win32 component, and SoundMAX packages from that era commonly used 32-bit control-panel software. That does not prove that every file with this name has identical architecture or metadata.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit application through Windows compatibility support. However, the calling application, midisyn.dll, and its dependent files must be compatible with one another.
Check the installed Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Then check the application that reports the error. If it is an old 32-bit SoundMAX control panel, install the matching 32-bit OEM package rather than copying files from an unrelated 64-bit package.

Fix 4: Repair the audio driver through Device Manager
Device Manager can remove a damaged device installation, but it may not restore the old SoundMAX Control Panel by itself.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Identify the audio device.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- On the General tab, read the device status.
- On the Driver tab, note the provider and driver date.
- If Roll Back Driver is available and the error began after an update, select it and restart.
- Otherwise, select Uninstall Device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver software only when you have the correct replacement package ready.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the matching OEM audio installer as administrator.
- Restart again.
Do not uninstall an audio device without knowing how you will reinstall it. If the manufacturer no longer supplies a compatible SoundMAX package, Windows may use a generic audio driver successfully while the obsolete SoundMAX control panel remains unavailable.
Manually comparing driver versions and identifying which package belongs to an older motherboard can take considerable time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its repair or driver installation is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the exact OEM SoundMAX package remains the definitive fix for this particular application component.
Fix 5: Check dependencies when the file exists
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency is missing, not that midisyn.dll itself is absent.
First confirm the file’s location:
- Press Windows key + S.
- Search for
midisyn.dll. - Select Open file location if Windows finds it.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for its description.
- Confirm that the file is associated with the SoundMAX installation rather than an unrelated folder.
Do not download individual dependencies based on a guessed filename. Instead:
- Uninstall the damaged SoundMAX package.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete matching OEM audio package.
- Restart again.
If the error remains, inspect Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the
midisyn.dllfailure. - Read the application name and module name.
- Use that information to distinguish a missing dependency from an incompatible executable.
A trusted dependency-analysis utility can help an experienced technician identify the missing module, but it should be used for diagnosis. Do not replace random dependent DLLs one at a time.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Windows repair tools are appropriate when other system files are also damaged. They are unlikely to restore a third-party SoundMAX DLL, but they can correct Windows component corruption that prevents an older application from launching.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait until DISM finishes. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the SoundMAX repair or the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run the DISM command again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the midisyn.dll message remains but other Windows programs work normally, return to the OEM package rather than repeating system repair indefinitely.
When manually running DISM and SFC repeatedly makes it difficult to determine what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the SoundMAX package that owns midisyn.dll.
Fix 7: Install pending Windows updates
Updates may resolve compatibility problems, although they will not normally provide this legacy third-party file.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Select Download & install if updates are offered.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check Windows Update again after restarting.
- Test the affected application.
If the computer has recently moved from Windows XP or Vista to Windows 10 or 11, the old SoundMAX Control Panel may simply be unsupported. A compatible generic audio driver may provide working sound without restoring the obsolete MIDI panel.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver installation, software removal, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the
midisyn.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal documents. It may not restore a file if the original OEM package is no longer represented in the restore point.
Why copying midisyn.dll or using regsvr32 is usually wrong
Avoid downloading an isolated DLL from a random file archive. The copy may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, come from a different SoundMAX release, or require dependencies that are still absent. It can also hide the actual problem, such as a damaged driver package or an obsolete startup entry.
Do not copy a random file into System32 or SysWOW64. midisyn.dll is an application component with an OEM-specific installation path, not a general Windows library.
regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that this SoundMAX application DLL requires COM registration.
Running this command is therefore normally unhelpful:
regsvr32 midisyn.dll
It may produce an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found, and it will not restore missing dependencies. Repair or reinstall the owning SoundMAX package instead.
Recommended Free Tools
If the SoundMAX package is no longer available
If the manufacturer no longer provides the driver:
- Check the computer’s original recovery media.
- Check the motherboard’s archived support downloads.
- Confirm the exact model before using an archived package.
- Back up important data before installing legacy software.
- Create a restore point.
- Install only a package intended for that hardware and operating system.
- If the audio device works without SoundMAX, remove the obsolete control panel instead of forcing it back.
- If the error appears at startup, disable or remove the orphaned SoundMAX startup entry.
- Do not remove an active audio driver simply because its control panel is obsolete.
If no matching package exists and the hardware is obsolete, a System Restore point or complete OEM recovery image may be the only reliable way to reproduce the original component. A clean installation of the current compatible audio driver is often preferable to restoring an unsupported MIDI control panel.

What does “SMax3CP DLL” mean?
It is the file’s reported description or internal name. The name connects the file with the SoundMAX Control Panel rather than with a standard Windows MIDI service.
Is midisyn.dll the same as midisynth.dll?
No. The names are similar, but they identify different files. Do not substitute one for the other.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is this a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file?
No. Those runtimes are not identified as the owner of midisyn.dll. Installing them is not the primary repair.
Should I register midisyn.dll?
Normally, no. Reinstall the complete SoundMAX package. regsvr32 does not repair missing dependencies or reconstruct an incomplete installation.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Use the matching OEM installer and let it place its files where the application expects them.
What if the file is present but Windows still reports it as missing?
The message may refer to a missing dependency, architecture mismatch, damaged file, or incompatible SoundMAX package. Reinstall the complete package and inspect the Event Viewer entry if the failure continues.
Can Windows 11 or Windows 10 use SoundMAX?
Some older hardware and software may work, but the legacy SoundMAX Control Panel may be unsupported after an upgrade. If audio works with a compatible modern driver, removing the obsolete control panel may be the correct resolution.
Is the reported file size or version universal?
No. Public file inventories report example metadata, but those values are not an official universal specification for every OEM package. Use the exact file supplied by the matching installer rather than choosing a copy by size or version alone.
