“hdcc.dll is missing” or “The specified module could not be found”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe hdcc.dll error usually means that Nero cannot find one of its own application files. hdcc.dll is an old 32-bit Nero component, not a Windows system DLL, so the safest repair is to restore the Nero installation rather than copy the file into a Windows folder.
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because hdcc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting hdcc.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading hdcc.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hdcc.dll was not found.”
- “hdcc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what happened:
- Nero stopped working after an uninstall, update, cleanup, or partial installation: repair or reinstall the same Nero product first.
- Nero worked until the file suddenly disappeared: check Windows Security Protection History for quarantine.
- The message names another DLL as well: repair the corresponding dependency, possibly the x86 Visual C++ runtime.
- The program is very old and still fails after reinstalling: test compatibility, then consider that the Nero release may not work correctly with your current Windows version.
- Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The error names a game launcher or bundled application instead of Nero: verify or reinstall that application’s files.
- You downloaded
hdcc.dllseparately: remove that copy and reinstall the application from trusted installation media.
What hdcc.dll is
Public file metadata identifies hdcc.dll as Nero Library, associated with Nero Burning ROM. Later metadata describes the component as Nero Hard Disc Recorder. The publisher information identifies Ahead Software AG or Nero AG.
The publicly catalogued records are old 32-bit files:

| Version | Architecture | Approximate size |
|---|---|---|
| 5.9.9.6 | 32-bit | 0.15 MB |
| 7.0.0.0 | 32-bit | 0.16 MB |
These records do not represent a complete history of every Nero release. They also do not prove that every version of Nero used the same internal component.
Is hdcc.dll part of Windows
No. Available file metadata identifies it as a third-party Nero library, not a Windows-protected system file.
It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders contain Windows and shared system components. Copying an application DLL there can create DLL search-order problems and can make later Nero repairs more difficult.
What does “Nero Library” mean
It is a descriptive internal file label, not a separate Windows feature. Nero uses DLL files to provide functions shared by its executable programs. The public metadata does not document the exact internal function of every hdcc.dll version, so the description should not be treated as proof that every Nero release uses the file identically.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix 1: Repair Nero from Windows
Repairing the owning application is the best first step because it restores the correct file version and its related dependencies together.
Before changing Nero, save any Nero project files and make sure you have the required serial number or license information.
Try the Installed apps repair option
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Nero.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the Nero entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Wait for Windows to finish.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Nero and repeat the action that produced the error.
The repair option may not be available for every traditional desktop Nero installation. If Nero starts normally afterward, no further DLL action is needed.
Use Programs and Features
If Settings does not offer repair:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Nero entry.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall/Change.
- Follow the Nero setup wizard.
- Choose the repair option if the wizard provides one.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero again.
If the setup wizard has no repair option, continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Nero product
A reinstall is appropriate when the installation is incomplete, corrupted, downgraded, or missing several files.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the Nero entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- If Windows opens a Nero maintenance wizard, choose the removal option.
- Restart Windows even if the uninstaller does not request it.
- Install Nero again using your original disc, saved installer, or the official Nero installer for your product and license.
- Prefer the complete installer rather than copying individual files.
- Restart Windows after setup finishes.
- Start Nero by opening its normal shortcut.
Nero provides installers for current and previous Nero Burning ROM releases through its official support and downloads pages. Use the release that matches your license and the product that previously worked. An installer for a different Nero edition may not contain the same components.

If you no longer know which edition was installed, check:
- The old Nero shortcut name.
- The Nero entry in Installed apps.
- The installation folder under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86). - Your original product documentation or license email.
- The executable named in the error dialog.
Do not delete project files while removing Nero. If the official installer itself fails, restart Windows, install pending Windows Updates, and try the official installer again.
What success looks like
The repair worked when Nero opens without the DLL message and completes the operation that previously failed. If the same message returns immediately after a complete reinstall, continue with the quarantine and dependency checks rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an old application file. This is especially relevant if Nero worked previously and hdcc.dll disappeared without a Nero update or uninstall.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry that names
hdcc.dll, Nero, or the Nero installation folder. - Expand the detection to view its location and action.
Do not automatically restore the file. An old DLL can be legitimate, but a file placed in the Nero folder by another program may not be.
Restore or allow the file only when all of these are true:
Recommended Free Tools
- The file came from your legitimate Nero installation.
- The path is the expected Nero installation directory.
- You can verify the installer or original media.
- Windows Security or another security product does not identify suspicious behavior from the surrounding installation.
If the source is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall Nero from trusted official media instead. If the file is repeatedly quarantined after reinstalling, treat that as a security issue. Do not repeatedly disable antivirus protection just to force Nero to start.
Fix 4: Determine whether a dependency is actually missing
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hdcc.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL.
Read the complete error carefully. If it names a second file such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll, the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime may be involved.
Repair the Visual C++ runtime only when named
- Note the exact runtime filename in the error.
- Open Microsoft’s official Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Download the supported x86 package when the affected Nero application is 32-bit.
- Install it.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero again.
The known public hdcc.dll records are 32-bit, but that does not prove which runtime dependencies every Nero version uses. Do not install Visual C++ merely because hdcc.dll is missing. Installing a runtime does not recreate an absent Nero file.

Multiple Visual C++ generations can coexist. Do not remove older redistributables indiscriminately, because unrelated programs may depend on them.
Do not install random DirectX or .NET packages first
DirectX, .NET, and Visual C++ are different components. Install or repair one only when the complete error or the Nero installer identifies it as required. Reinstalling unrelated runtimes will not reliably restore an application-owned DLL.
Fix 5: Account for 32-bit Nero on 64-bit Windows
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility layer. That does not make its DLLs interchangeable with 64-bit DLLs.
The known public hdcc.dll records are 32-bit. Therefore:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- A 64-bit replacement is not an appropriate substitute.
- A DLL from another Nero release may have different dependencies.
- A file from another computer may have the wrong version or provenance.
- The correct location is normally the Nero application directory, not a Windows system directory.
If Nero’s installer offers separate architecture choices, use the architecture required by the Nero product rather than guessing from the architecture of Windows.
Fix 6: Test compatibility for an old Nero release
A very old Nero installation may be incompatible with modern Windows even after its files are restored. Reinstalling hdcc.dll cannot correct every compatibility problem.
First complete the Nero repair or reinstall. Then:
- Right-click the Nero shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if you know the Nero release was designed for it.
- Select Apply and then OK.
- Start Nero again.
You can also select Run this program as an administrator for a test. If this changes the result, the problem may involve permissions rather than the DLL itself. Do not permanently grant administrator access unless it is necessary.
If the same error remains after a clean installation and compatibility testing, the old Nero release may simply not be suitable for the current Windows environment. Use a supported Nero release when your license allows it, or preserve the old application in an appropriately maintained environment.

Fix 7: Verify files when Nero is bundled with another application
Sometimes the error is shown by a game launcher, media package, or another application that included a Nero component.
Do not copy hdcc.dll into the launcher’s folder unless the application’s own documentation specifically requires that arrangement. Instead:
Rank #4
- 13mm for ultra slim and light
- Mac/PC Support
- Includes USB 2. 0 and Type-C cables
- Nero BackItUp function for Android Devices
- DISC Encryption II for password-controls and hidden-file functionality
- Open the launcher or application settings.
- Find Manage, Repair, Verify files, or a similar option.
- Run the file verification process.
- Allow it to replace missing or damaged bundled files.
- Restart the application.
If no verification feature exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official source. Record the exact executable named in the error because it identifies which program is requesting the library.
Fix 8: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Nero DLL removed from the Nero installation folder.
Use them when other Windows programs are failing, Windows reports damaged system files, or the problem began with broader operating-system corruption.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but Nero still reports hdcc.dll, return to the Nero repair or reinstall path.
If manually tracking corrupted Windows components and repeating DISM and SFC is becoming difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for a Nero-specific reinstall.
Fix 9: Update drivers only when the error points to them
A graphics, storage, or optical-drive problem can affect Nero, but there is no verified evidence that a particular driver universally causes hdcc.dll errors. Do not begin by replacing drivers when the DLL is simply missing from the Nero folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check drivers when:
- Nero fails during disc detection or device access.
- Device Manager shows a warning icon.
- The error names a driver or device.
- Other programs have started failing after a hardware change.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as DVD/CD-ROM drives, Storage controllers, and Display adapters.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test Nero.
You can also select Properties > Driver to review the driver state or roll back a recently changed driver. Do not uninstall a device driver unless you know Windows can reinstall it or you have the manufacturer’s official package.
If checking many device versions manually is taking time, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs driver installation, and updating a driver is not a substitute for reinstalling the Nero application when its own file is missing.
Fix 10: Consider System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore only when:
- A suitable restore point predates the error.
- The failure began after a program installation, update, or configuration change.
-
Nero repair and reinstall did not resolve it.
-
Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test Nero.
System Restore rolls back system settings, installed programs, and registry state. It does not normally remove personal documents, but you should still back up important files first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why you should not use regsvr32 for hdcc.dll
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 hdcc.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Ordinary application libraries do not necessarily provide that function. If you run the command on a library that lacks it, Windows may report that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.
A registration error does not prove that the file is damaged. For this Nero component, repair or reinstall the owning application instead.

Prevention after the repair
Once Nero works again:
- Keep the Nero installer and license information in a safe location.
- Record the installed Nero edition and installation path.
- Do not delete old application files with manual “DLL cleanup” utilities.
- Review antivirus detections before restoring quarantined files.
- Create a restore point before major application changes.
- Keep Windows updated, but do not assume a Windows update supplies third-party Nero files.
- Repair or reinstall Nero after an interrupted update instead of copying individual DLLs.
FAQ
Is hdcc.dll a Windows file?
No. Available metadata identifies it as a Nero application component, not a Windows system DLL.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which program installed hdcc.dll?
It is associated with Nero Burning ROM. The public records do not establish one universal Nero release for every copy of the file.
Is hdcc.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The known public records identify hdcc.dll as 32-bit. Do not replace it with a 64-bit DLL.
Why does reinstalling Nero sometimes not fix the error?
The wrong Nero edition may have been installed, the installer may be incomplete, antivirus software may quarantine the file again, or the error may actually concern a dependency. Check the complete message and the installation folder.
Does “specified module could not be found” prove that hdcc.dll is missing?
No. Windows may be unable to load a dependency of hdcc.dll. Look for another DLL named in the full error.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I copy hdcc.dll into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Restore it to the Nero installation directory through repair or reinstall.
Should I register hdcc.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command and may fail because this library does not expose a registration entry point.
Will SFC restore hdcc.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while hdcc.dll belongs to Nero.
What should I record if the error continues?
Write down the complete error text, the executable named in the dialog, your Windows version, Nero version, installation path, recent changes, and any antivirus quarantine history. This information distinguishes a missing Nero file from a dependency or compatibility problem.
