Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“A required component is missing: rare3260.dll. Please install the application again.”
The rare3260.dll error usually means an old RealPlayer or RealMedia application cannot load its RealAudio Renderer plug-in. It is not a Windows system DLL, and downloading a replacement into System32 is usually the wrong repair.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:
- The error appears when RealPlayer or an old RealMedia program starts: repair or reinstall that application.
- The error began after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The program was recently removed: uninstall the remaining entry or remove its obsolete startup reference.
- The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing, so reinstall the complete application.
- The error appeared after an update, cleanup, or software installation: try System Restore.
- Several Windows programs also fail: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The message names a game or unrelated application: identify that program first. It may contain a bundled RealMedia component.
- You no longer use the affected software: remove the obsolete application instead of rebuilding it.
What rare3260.dll is
rare3260.dll is a 32-bit RealNetworks component identified as the RealAudio Renderer plug-in for RealMedia. Historical RealSystem documentation maps the Windows module to the RealAudio rendering plug-in. It belongs to the RealMedia software family, not to Windows itself.

Older installations commonly placed it in a Real plug-in directory such as:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesRealPluginsrare3260.dll
or:
C:Program FilesRealPluginsrare3260.dll
Those are historical locations, not instructions to copy the file there manually. The correct folder depends on the application that originally installed it.
The file is identified as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. A 32-bit application normally loads its plug-ins from its own installation directory or a related application plug-in folder. There is no reliable evidence of a separate 64-bit version that belongs in a 64-bit Windows system directory.
Some third-party metadata reports an old version and file size for rare3260.dll, but those details are historical and are not a current RealNetworks release guarantee. Do not use a matching filename, size, or version alone to decide that an internet download is safe.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that owns the file
This is the most likely and safest fix.
Identify the calling application
Look at the title bar and the full error message. It may mention RealPlay.exe, RealPlayer, or another older multimedia program.
You can also inspect the shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and installation folder.
- Close the dialog without changing the shortcut.
If the error appears at startup rather than when you launch a program:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for RealPlayer, RealMedia, or an unfamiliar old media entry.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
- Record the application name before disabling the startup item.
Do not assume that every program mentioning rare3260.dll is RealPlayer. The file may have been bundled with another RealMedia application.
Use Windows repair
For a supported application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected RealMedia program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the program again.
Classic desktop applications may use a different menu:

- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft’s repair guidance covers both modern applications and classic desktop programs: repair apps and programs in Windows.
A successful repair should let the application start without the rare3260.dll message. It should also restore the plug-in in the application’s own Real directory rather than placing it in System32.
Reinstall the complete application
If Repair is unavailable or fails:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the old RealPlayer or RealMedia application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the old application’s installation folder remains.
- Remove only the leftover folder belonging to that application.
- Install the program again from RealNetworks’ official installer or from a trusted original installation source.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch the application normally.
The current RealNetworks product is RealPlayer 25, but it has not been verified to contain this historical plug-in. Installing the newest RealPlayer may not restore an older application that specifically expects rare3260.dll. If the legacy program is essential, use its original trusted installer or installation media where possible.
If reinstalling a current product does not restore the old application, do not compensate by downloading `rare3260.dll separately. The old host program may be incompatible with the newer product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus product may have quarantined or removed an old plug-in. That is a possibility, not proof that the file was safe.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry that identifies the RealPlayer installation folder or
rare3260.dll. - Record the detection name and original file path.
- Scan the complete installer and the surrounding application files.
- Restore the file only if the installer came from a trusted source, the file’s origin is clear, and your security checks indicate a false positive.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can put the device at risk. Its instructions are available in Protection history in Windows Security.

Reinstalling the complete application is preferable to restoring one isolated DLL. A quarantined file may be only one damaged or unwanted part of an incomplete installation.
If Windows Security does not list the file, do not add a broad exclusion for the RealPlayer folder just to suppress the error. That can hide other problems.

Fix 3: Remove an obsolete installation or startup entry
Sometimes the application has already been removed, but a shortcut or startup command still tries to launch it.
Remove the application normally
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for RealPlayer, RealMedia, or the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
For older desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the obsolete program.
- Choose Uninstall or Change.
- Restart Windows.
Disable a leftover startup entry
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Find the entry connected with the removed application.
- Right-click it.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the entry is not in Task Manager, inspect the Startup folder:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
shell:startup
- Press Enter.
- Remove only the shortcut clearly belonging to the obsolete RealMedia application.
Then check the all-users Startup folder:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
shell:common startup
- Press Enter.
- Remove the matching obsolete shortcut if present.
If you no longer need the program, this is the correct outcome. There is no benefit in restoring a legacy plug-in for software you do not use.
Fix 4: Check the application directory and architecture
Do not begin by copying rare3260.dll into Windows system folders. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Those names are confusing, but neither folder is the normal home for this RealMedia plug-in.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To inspect the expected application folder:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for a
Plugins,Real, orCommon FilesRealdirectory. - Check whether the application has its own copy of
rare3260.dll. - Do not replace it unless you are using the original installer or a verified backup.
A 32-bit host needs a compatible 32-bit plug-in. A file with the correct name but the wrong architecture can produce a bad-image or loading error.
If the file is present but the program still fails, check the full path shown in the error. It may point to a damaged copy, an incomplete folder, or a missing dependency.
Fix 5: Reinstall when “specified module could not be found” appears
This message is easy to misunderstand:
Error loading rare3260.dll. The specified module could not be found.
It may mean that rare3260.dll itself is missing. It can also mean that Windows found the named DLL but could not load one of its dependencies.
The practical repair is still to reinstall the complete owning application:
- Uninstall the affected RealMedia program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or obtain the complete installer from a trusted official source.
- Install it normally.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the original program.
Do not download random dependency files one at a time. That approach can create a mixture of incompatible binaries and can introduce malware.
For more detail, inspect Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Read the Faulting application name, faulting module, and any referenced path.
- Use that information when deciding whether the host program or a separate dependency is damaged.
If the log identifies a Microsoft runtime, follow the requirements of the specific application. Do not assume that Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a device driver is the source of rare3260.dll; there is no evidence that this RealAudio renderer is normally supplied by those packages.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the file worked until a recent installation, update, cleanup operation, or configuration change.

- Review the applications and drivers that may be removed or restored.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally delete personal documents, but it can roll back programs, drivers, and system settings. Microsoft documents the process in System Restore.
After Windows starts, test the application. If the error returns, undoing the recent system change was not enough and the owning program should still be repaired or reinstalled.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are not the normal way to restore rare3260.dll. This file is a third-party RealNetworks plug-in, not a Windows-protected system file.
Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, Windows updates are damaged, or system corruption is suspected.

- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
For broader Windows 11 image corruption, you can also run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
The Microsoft DISM image repair reference explains these options.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but rare3260.dll is still missing, that result is expected for a third-party plug-in. Return to the application repair or reinstall steps.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be frustrating when the real problem is an incomplete application. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it found; its repair is performed by the full version, but reinstalling the RealMedia application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Investigate drivers only when the error identifies one
rare3260.dll is not identified as a hardware driver. Do not update every driver merely because this file is missing.
Investigate drivers only if Event Viewer, Device Manager, or the complete application error names a separate device or driver problem.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category named in the error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when a compatible driver is available from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
Do not uninstall a working display, audio, or chipset driver as a guess. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is relevant only when a separate driver issue is actually confirmed.
If Device Manager shows no warning icon and the error names only rare3260.dll, return to the RealPlayer or RealMedia installation.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A renderer plug-in is not automatically a COM or ActiveX component.
Running this command:
regsvr32 rare3260.dll
may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.” It will not restore a missing file, repair its dependencies, or rebuild a damaged RealPlayer installation.
Do not use regsvr32 unless the application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register this exact DLL. There is no authoritative evidence that rare3260.dll must be registered.

Why standalone DLL downloads are risky
Avoid DLL download sites websites and unofficial file mirrors. A downloaded file can have:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- The wrong historical build
- Missing dependencies
- A damaged or modified binary
- Malware
- A filename that does not match the file’s actual contents
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also create new conflicts and does not repair the application that expects the plug-in.
The safe sources are:
- The official RealNetworks installer for the application you actually need.
- A trusted original installation disc or backup.
- A known-good copy from the same application installation, after verifying its origin and scanning it.
Restore a single file from a backup only when you know which program installed it and where it originally belonged. Reinstalling the complete application is safer.
Prevention after the repair
Once the program starts:
- Keep a backup of the complete installer if the application is no longer widely supported.
- Do not remove its plug-in folder with a disk-cleanup utility.
- Keep Windows Security enabled rather than adding permanent antivirus exclusions.
- Remove unused RealMedia startup entries.
- Record the application name and installation path for future troubleshooting.
- Avoid mixing files from different RealPlayer or RealMedia releases.
- Create a restore point before installing old multimedia software.
FAQ
Is rare3260.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a RealNetworks RealAudio rendering plug-in associated with older RealMedia software.
Is rare3260.dll a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Available product information identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. There is no reliable evidence of a separate 64-bit rare3260.dll.
What program normally uses rare3260.dll?
Historically, RealPlayer and other RealMedia or RealSystem applications are the main connection. The exact calling program must be identified on the affected computer.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Restore it through the owning application’s installer and let that application place it in its expected plug-in directory.
Will installing the newest RealPlayer fix the error?
Not necessarily. The current RealPlayer product has not been verified to contain this historical plug-in. A legacy application may require its original installer.
Will SFC restore rare3260.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while rare3260.dll is a third-party application component.
Should I run regsvr32 rare3260.dll?
Usually no. There is no authoritative evidence that this renderer plug-in is self-registering.
What if the DLL is present but the error remains?
Reinstall the complete application. The file may be damaged, incompatible, or dependent on another missing DLL.
What if I no longer use RealPlayer?
Uninstall the obsolete program and disable any leftover startup shortcut. Restoring the DLL is unnecessary.
What information should I collect if nothing works?
Record the complete error text, calling executable, DLL path, Windows version, affected application version, recent system changes, and any antivirus detection. That information distinguishes a missing plug-in from a missing dependency or an obsolete startup entry.
