The 60-second answer
igfxsrvc.dll is an Intel graphics-driver file associated with the older Intel Common User Interface, not a Microsoft Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file. It may appear in C:WindowsSystem32, but that location does not make it a Windows-owned DLL.

The safest fix is to identify the Intel graphics adapter in Device Manager and reinstall the matching graphics package from the computer or motherboard manufacturer. If the problem started after an update, roll back the driver or use System Restore. Do not download a loose copy of igfxsrvc.dll and place it in System32.

- A graphics-driver update was incomplete or damaged.
- Windows Update installed a driver that does not match the computer.
- A driver rollback left files from two different driver generations.
- Intel graphics software was removed or only partially installed.
- An antivirus product quarantined the DLL.
- Disk cleanup or a failed system migration removed part of the driver package.
- A legacy Intel driver was installed on an incompatible Windows release.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit driver component were mixed.
- Malware replaced a genuine file, or a counterfeit DLL is present in an unusual folder.
The most common explanation is a damaged, incomplete, or mismatched Intel graphics installation. Replacing the individual DLL does not repair the rest of that installation, its dependencies, its registry configuration, or its display-driver components.
First, identify the graphics hardware
Do not download a driver based only on the DLL filename. Find the exact adapter and Windows architecture first.
- Press
Win + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the complete Intel adapter name.
- Right-click the adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the driver provider, date, and version.
- Open the General tab and note any Device status code.
If Display adapters shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is running without the intended graphics driver. That makes a driver repair more likely to solve the missing-file message.
To check whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit:
- Press
Win + I. - Select System.
- Choose About.
- Find System type under Device specifications.
Use a driver package that matches both the Intel adapter and the Windows architecture. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit installation, or the reverse. Legacy Intel documentation includes separate 32-bit and 64-bit packages, and there is no single version or file size of igfxsrvc.dll that applies to every Intel system.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates and restart
A pending Windows update can leave a display-driver installation unfinished.
- Press
Win + I. - Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all appropriate updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the action that produced the error.
If the error began directly after Windows Update, do not keep reinstalling random DLLs. Continue to the driver rollback section below.
Fix 2: Reinstall the correct Intel graphics driver
For laptops, all-in-one computers, and systems with hybrid graphics, use the computer manufacturer’s support page first. OEM packages may include customizations for display switching, hotkeys, power management, panel behavior, and firmware. A generic Intel package can install successfully while still causing compatibility problems with those features.
For a desktop, use the motherboard manufacturer’s support page when its package is available. Intel’s generic driver package or Driver & Support Assistant is a reasonable fallback when the OEM package is unavailable or unsuitable, but it should not automatically replace the OEM driver.

Download the driver safely
- Open the manufacturer’s official support page.
- Search using the exact computer model or motherboard model.
- Select the installed Windows release and architecture.
- Download the Graphics, Display, or Intel Graphics driver.
- If several generations are listed, match the adapter name from Device Manager.
- Close other programs.
- Run the downloaded installer as an administrator if required.
- Restart when the installation finishes.
If the installer says the driver is not validated for the computer, stop. Obtain the OEM package rather than forcing an unrelated Intel driver.
After restarting, open Device Manager again and check the Intel adapter. The adapter should appear without a warning icon, the resolution should be normal, and the original error should not return when you repeat the action that triggered it.
Why the OEM package comes first
Intel graphics hardware can use software customized by the system manufacturer. A clean generic installation may restore igfxsrvc.dll but remove or alter OEM-specific behavior. If the computer is a laptop or hybrid-graphics system, return to the OEM package if you notice broken display switching, missing brightness controls, nonworking hotkeys, unusual power behavior, or an external-monitor problem.
When the file belongs to the Intel graphics package, reinstalling that package remains the definitive repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through multiple driver versions: its free scan shows what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the right source when OEM customization matters.

Fix 3: Perform a clean graphics-driver installation
Use a clean installation when a normal reinstall completes but igfxsrvc.dll errors continue, or when Device Manager shows remnants of an older driver.
Some Intel installers expose this option directly:
- Start the correct graphics-driver installer.
- Choose Custom installation if that option appears.
- Select Execute a clean installation.
- Continue through the installer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the display and the program that reported the DLL.
Intel describes a clean installation as removing older driver files and returning Intel settings to defaults. This can resolve conflicts between a current package and files left by an earlier generation.
Remove the driver through Device Manager if the installer fails
Use this route when the installer will not run, repeatedly rolls back, or reports a corrupted installation.
- Disconnect from the internet temporarily. This helps prevent Windows from immediately installing a different driver during the removal.
- Press
Win + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel adapter.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- Select Delete the driver software for this device if the checkbox appears.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the matching OEM graphics package you downloaded earlier.
- Restart again.
- Reconnect to the internet.
The display may look enlarged or use a low resolution between removal and reinstall. That is expected while Windows uses a basic display driver.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If the Intel adapter disappears after removal, select Action in Device Manager and choose Scan for hardware changes, then install the correct package. If the computer has two graphics adapters, remove only the Intel adapter unless the manufacturer’s instructions say otherwise.
Fix 4: Roll back a driver that caused the error
Rollback is appropriate when igfxsrvc.dll worked before a graphics-driver update and failed immediately afterward.
- Press
Win + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason when Windows asks.
- Confirm and restart.
The Roll Back Driver button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous package to restore. In that case, download the previous stable OEM driver from the manufacturer and install it manually.
If a recent Windows update caused the problem rather than the driver itself, open Settings → Windows Update → Update history and review recently installed updates. Remove an update only when you can clearly connect it to the failure and have another recovery path available.

Antivirus software may quarantine a genuine Intel file, but a detection should not be dismissed automatically. Malware can use a familiar filename to appear legitimate.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
igfxsrvc.dll. - Review the file path, detection details, and available action.
- Do not restore it merely because the filename looks familiar.
Restore the file only when you can verify that it came from the matching Intel driver installation and is authentic Intel-signed software, and when the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Microsoft warns that allowing a real threat can expose the computer.

igfxsrvc.dll is generally an Intel driver component, so Windows repair tools are not guaranteed to restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself also appears damaged, updates fail, built-in apps malfunction, or other protected system files report errors.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original problem again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected Windows files. They do not substitute for reinstalling a missing Intel graphics package. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run the commands again only if Windows problems remain. Do not interpret repeated SFC runs as a replacement for the correct driver installation.
If you are tired of repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported system problems, while the repair is done by the full version. It is optional, and a missing Intel driver still needs to be repaired from the official package.
Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent regression
System Restore is useful when the error appeared after a driver, update, or software change and a restore point exists from before the failure.
- Press
Win + R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings but does not normally remove personal documents. Save open work first. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the OEM driver reinstall and clean-install steps.

Do not use regsvr32 as a default fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the registration entry points expected by Windows, such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal “repair DLL” command.
Although some legacy Intel installation documentation includes igfxsrvc.dll in a registration section, that does not prove that every version supports manual registration or that registration would repair missing dependencies. The matching Intel installer should handle any registration it requires.
Running commands such as these blindly is not recommended:
regsvr32 igfxsrvc.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32igfxsrvc.dll
They can produce another error, register an incompatible file, or distract from the damaged driver package. Use regsvr32 only when the specific vendor installation instructions for your exact package explicitly require it.
Why downloading igfxsrvc.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and “DLL repair” programs that tell you to copy a file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder.
A loose DLL may have:
- The wrong Intel driver generation
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing dependencies
- An incompatible export table
- An invalid or absent digital signature
- Malware disguised with a familiar filename
Even an authentic DLL may not fix the installation because the driver’s other files, services, settings, and dependencies are still damaged. The safe sources are the computer manufacturer’s official support package, the motherboard manufacturer’s official package, or Intel’s official driver channels when an OEM package is unavailable.
If the error persists after reinstalling
Work through these checks:
- Open Device Manager and look for a warning icon or a Device status error code.
- Confirm that the installed package matches the exact Intel adapter.
- Confirm that the package matches 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.
- Try the OEM driver if you used Intel’s generic package.
- Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System for display-driver and installation errors.
- Check the manufacturer’s driver-installation logs if the installer created them.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- Check disk health if files repeatedly disappear or installations become corrupted.
- Confirm that the Intel graphics adapter has not been disabled in firmware.
- Contact the computer manufacturer if display switching, hotkeys, or panel behavior also stopped working.
If the problem began after a failed migration or disk replacement, test the storage device and reinstall the manufacturer’s complete chipset and graphics packages in the order recommended by the manufacturer.
Frequently asked questions
Is igfxsrvc.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Intel Common User Interface and Intel graphics-driver software. It may historically be installed under %SystemRoot%System32, but its location does not make it a Microsoft component.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does every Intel graphics driver include igfxsrvc.dll?
No. The file is associated particularly with older Intel integrated-graphics packages. Do not assume that every modern Intel GPU or driver package should contain it.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the primary repair. There is no basis for treating igfxsrvc.dll as one of those runtime components. Repair the matching Intel graphics package first.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may use a different Intel adapter, driver generation, Windows architecture, or dependency set. Install the complete matching driver package instead.
Why does the error mention hkcmd.exe?
Older Intel graphics installations used startup and interface components that could involve hkcmd.exe and igfxsrvc.dll. A failure in that legacy package can appear during startup or desktop interaction even when the adapter still appears in Device Manager.
Will SFC restore igfxsrvc.dll?
Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while igfxsrvc.dll is normally supplied by Intel graphics software. Use SFC and DISM for suspected Windows corruption, but reinstall the Intel driver for this file.
Is a detection of igfxsrvc.dll always malware?
No. Genuine Intel files can be quarantined, but malware can also use the same name. Check the path, publisher, signature, and Protection History before restoring anything.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when the problem started immediately after a driver or Windows change and a suitable restore point exists. If the error continues after restoration, install the correct OEM driver and escalate to the manufacturer.
