You should not normally find this file in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A game folder
- An unrelated application folder
The correct location depends on the HP driver package and its installation process. Do not use a system folder as a substitute for reinstalling the driver.
Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because hpbf201f.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file hpbf201f.dll is missing.”
- “hpbf201f.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading hpbf201f.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load hpbf201f.dll.”

These messages are generic loader messages. They do not prove that Windows itself is damaged.

The most likely explanation is an incomplete, damaged, or incompatible HP LaserJet 1100 installation. This often happens after removing a printer, reinstalling Windows, restoring a backup, replacing the printer, or cleaning up an old driver.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the complete HP driver
This is the primary repair when the LaserJet 1100 is still needed.
Remove the printer in Windows 11
- Disconnect the printer or turn it off.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the HP LaserJet 1100 or 1100A.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is not listed, continue with the driver installation steps anyway. A damaged driver package can remain after the visible printer entry has disappeared.
Remove it in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the HP LaserJet 1100.
- Select Remove device.
- Confirm and restart the computer.
Download the correct package
Open HP’s official LaserJet 1100 software and driver support page by searching HP Support for LaserJet 1100 Printer series. Select the actual Windows version detected or selected on the page.
Download the complete printer-driver package. Do not search for hpbf201f.dll as a separate download.
HP’s support page lists historical operating-system choices including Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. If Windows 10 or Windows 11 is not listed for the printer, treat that as a compatibility warning rather than assuming that an old installer will work.

Install the package
- Close printer utilities and other programs.
- Right-click the downloaded HP installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Connect or turn on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
- Select the HP LaserJet 1100.
- Choose Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
The repair worked if the test page prints and opening printer properties no longer produces the DLL message.
If the installer fails, do not copy the DLL manually. Use the manual installation method below.

Fix 2: Add the printer manually
Windows may be able to use a compatible built-in printer driver even when the historical HP installer cannot run.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches.
- Select Add manually when it appears.
- Choose the option for a printer using an existing port.
- Select the port used by the printer, such as USB or a configured standard printer port.
- Choose Windows Update to refresh the available printer list, or select Have Disk if you have a compatible HP driver package.
- Select HP as the manufacturer.
- Choose LaserJet 1100 if it is available.
- Complete the wizard.
- Print a test page from the printer’s properties.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add a printer or scanner.
- Wait for the search to finish.
- Select The printer that I want isn’t listed.
- Choose the existing-port option.
- Select the correct port.
- Choose Windows Update or Have Disk.
- Select HP and the LaserJet 1100 model when available.
- Finish the installation and print a test page.
A built-in driver may restore printing without restoring every old HP utility. That is acceptable if printing works and you no longer need the original HP interface.

When manually hunting through old packages and comparing driver versions, it is easy to select the wrong device or architecture. Fix 3: Check whether the old driver is compatible
A 64-bit computer does not require an x64 copy of this particular DLL. Historical listings identify hpbf201f.dll as an x86 component of an old printer driver. The important question is whether the complete printer driver supports the Windows installation and driver architecture, not whether the DLL matches the bitness of Windows by itself.
Do not install an x64 DLL into a 64-bit Windows folder. Do not assume that compatibility mode can make every old printer package work.

If the HP installer will not run:
- Right-click the HP installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try a historically appropriate Windows version only if you have a legitimate HP installer.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
Compatibility mode is not guaranteed to provide a working kernel or print subsystem driver. If the package still fails, use Add device, Add manually, or Windows Update to select a compatible printer driver.
If HP does not provide a package for Windows 10 or Windows 11, your practical choices are:
- Use a Windows-provided compatible LaserJet driver.
- Use a separate older Windows computer or supported environment for the printer.
- Keep the printer only if it can function through a supported connection and driver.
- Replace the obsolete printer if no supported driver path works.
HP states that an operating system not listed for a product may have no HP driver support. A missing file and an incompatible driver are different problems: reinstalling the same old package may restore the file but still leave the printer unusable on a modern system.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old driver component. That does not automatically mean the file was malicious, and it does not prove that a random replacement is safe.
To inspect Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the HP driver or
hpbf201f.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:

- The package was downloaded from HP Support or obtained from trusted installation media.
- The file path belongs to the printer installation.
- The system has no other signs of infection.
- You understand the security warning and accept the risk.
Microsoft notes in its Protection History guidance that restoring a quarantined threat can cause Defender to detect it again unless the item is explicitly allowed.
If the file came from a DLL download site, leave it quarantined and remove that package. Reinstall the complete driver from HP instead.
Fix 5: Remove stale printer software
If you no longer use the LaserJet 1100, restoring the DLL may be unnecessary. The correct repair can be removing the obsolete software that continues trying to load it.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for HP LaserJet, Hewlett-Packard, or printer utilities.
- Remove software clearly associated with the unused LaserJet 1100.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Printers & scanners and remove any remaining LaserJet 1100 entry.
If the message disappears after uninstalling the old software, the system is no longer trying to load the obsolete component. Do not remove unrelated HP software merely because it has HP in its name.
For persistent driver entries, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers, select Print server properties, open the Drivers tab, and remove only the obsolete LaserJet 1100 driver if Windows permits it. Do this only after removing the printer, because Windows may report that the driver is still in use.
Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
hpbf201f.dll is a third-party HP driver file. System File Checker normally repairs protected Windows files, so SFC is not expected to download or restore this HP component.
Use these tools when several unrelated Windows programs also fail, Windows features are damaged, or system corruption is suspected.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired or found no integrity violations. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, repeat the commands after restarting. If only the HP printer still reports hpbf201f.dll, return to the complete driver reinstall rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.
Running the commands manually is useful when Windows itself is unstable, but they do not replace the HP package. Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is relevant when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, printer replacement, cleanup utility, or software removal.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not erase personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.

If no suitable restore point exists, reinstall the printer driver instead. If every repair fails and Windows has broader problems, Windows 11 may offer Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where that option is available.

Should you run regsvr32 hpbf201f.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A printer user-interface DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM component.
Running:
regsvr32 hpbf201f.dll
may produce:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message means registration is not the applicable repair. It does not prove that the DLL is missing or that Windows needs a different copy. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 reference.

Not as a first response. There is no verified evidence that hpbf201f.dll is a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Installing those packages will not normally restore an HP printer-driver interface DLL.
Windows Features are also not the right place to enable this file. Do not turn on random legacy components based only on a filename error. Investigate the application requesting the DLL and repair that application or driver.
Should you download the DLL separately?
No. Random DLL download pages may provide malware, a modified file, the wrong architecture, or a file from a different package. Even an apparently matching filename may not have the correct dependencies or installation registration. A loose copy often leaves the damaged HP driver unchanged.
Use the complete HP driver package, Windows Update, or the manual printer-driver wizard instead.

A missing-file error usually appears after the driver has been partially removed or damaged. Reinstalling the complete package should restore the driver files and stop the message.
An incompatibility problem is more likely when:
- The installer refuses to run.
- Windows says the program is not designed for the current version.
- The error says “bad image.”
- The file exists, but the driver still will not load.
- Printing fails even after a clean reinstall.
- The old package was designed for an earlier Windows generation.
- The computer is 64-bit and the package contains only historical x86 components.
A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that hpbf201f.dll exists but a dependency is missing. Reinstalling the complete package is still the correct first step because it restores the related HP files together.
