tscrec2.dll Missing: Trace and Repair Its Legacy Host on Windows

Common messages include “tscrec2.dll was not found,” “The file tscrec2.dll is missing or corrupted,” “Error loading tscrec2.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.” A program may also report that tscrec2.dll is missing from your computer or that a required component could not be loaded.

The 60-second answer

tscrec2.dll is not a normal Windows system file. It is identified as Camtasia Screen Recorder Control, a component of the Camtasia Screen Recorder SDK published by TechSmith Corporation.

The safest fix is to identify the older recording application that is requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that application from its original installer or the vendor’s official download channel. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.

The file may belong to an old Camtasia-based utility, Screen Capture Server, or another application that bundled TechSmith’s recording SDK. Current Camtasia releases may not contain this legacy component, so installing the newest version is not automatically the correct repair.

What tscrec2.dll is

tscrec2.dll is an application DLL rather than a Windows component. Its reported description is Camtasia Screen Recorder Control, and its reported product is the Camtasia Screen Recorder SDK.

Third-party file metadata describes it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL and reports version 2.0.9.0, a size of about 75.5 KB, and TechSmith copyright metadata from 2001–2004. Those details are historical file-database metadata, not a current TechSmith technical specification. Treat them as clues when comparing an existing copy, not as a requirement to find a file with exactly those properties.

There is no evidence that Windows normally installs tscrec2.dll in either of these folders:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit version of its own dependencies in the application’s installation directory or another location configured by that application.

What usually caused the error

The likely cause depends on when the message appeared.

Situation Likely cause Best response
The error appears when starting an old recorder Partial uninstall or damaged installation Repair or reinstall the recorder
The file disappeared suddenly Antivirus quarantine or cleanup Check Protection history
The program was copied to another computer Incomplete backup or missing dependencies Reinstall the complete application
A new release was installed over an old one Version mismatch Use the matching older installer
“Specified module could not be found” appears although the file exists A dependency of the DLL is missing Repair the host application and investigate its runtime
“Entry point not found” appears Incompatible DLL version Restore the matching application release
The error appears during Windows startup Stale startup or scheduled-task entry Remove or repair the obsolete host program

Fix 1: Identify the application requesting the file

Do this before downloading anything or changing Windows folders.

Check the error window and shortcut

Look at the title bar and the complete message. The name of the failing program may appear above the DLL message.

If the error appears after clicking a shortcut:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the Target field.
  4. Note the executable name and its installation folder.
  5. Select Open File Location if available.

The executable that launches immediately before the error is usually the application that needs tscrec2.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check installed applications

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for Camtasia, Screen Capture Server, Screen Recorder, or the program named by the shortcut.
  5. Open the application’s menu and select Advanced options if available.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Search for the likely recording application.
  5. Select it and choose Advanced options if Windows provides that option.

Do not assume that an entry named Camtasia is the owner. A separate product can bundle an older TechSmith SDK.

Search for the file without moving it

Open File Explorer and search the application’s likely installation folder for:

tscrec2.dll

If you find it, record the complete path. A copy inside the host application’s folder is more useful than a copy in a Windows system directory.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

If the file exists but the error says “specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency loaded by tscrec2.dll, not the DLL itself. Reinstalling the host application is still the appropriate first repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check startup entries and scheduled tasks

If the message appears immediately after signing in:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an old recorder, screen-capture utility, or unknown entry.
  4. Select it and choose Disable temporarily.
  5. Restart Windows.

For scheduled tasks:

  1. Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler Library.
  3. Inspect tasks whose names reference screen capture, recording, Camtasia, or the failing executable.
  4. Open a task’s Actions tab to see what program it launches.
  5. Disable the task only if it clearly points to software that has been removed.

If disabling a stale startup item stops the error, uninstall the obsolete application or reinstall it if you still need it.

Fix 2: Repair the owning application

Windows may provide a Repair action for the program.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the application that invokes tscrec2.dll.
  5. Open its menu.
  6. Select Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows and launch the program again.

Some desktop installers provide their own repair option instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Repair or Change.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.

A successful repair should allow the original application to start without the DLL message. It may also restore related codecs, services, registry settings, and supporting files that copying one DLL would not restore.

If Repair is unavailable or does not work, continue with a clean reinstall.

Fix 3: Reinstall the application from an official installer

Before uninstalling, preserve project files, custom templates, exported recordings, activation information, and any installer you already know to be genuine.

Then:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
  4. Select the affected recorder.
  5. Choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Install the application again using its original installer or the vendor’s official download repository.
  8. Restart Windows once more.
  9. Test the application from its normal shortcut.

For TechSmith software, use the official Camtasia download and support channels. TechSmith also provides guidance for previous-version installers. Do not assume that a current Camtasia installer includes the old tscrec2.dll component; if the error comes from a legacy utility, the matching older installer may be necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the software was supplied by an employer, school, or another organization, request the original deployment package from that organization rather than substituting a DLL from the internet.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a DLL while leaving the main application installed.

Rank #3
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for a detection involving tscrec2.dll or the affected application.
  5. Expand the detection and inspect its path and details.

Only restore the file when all of these conditions are met:

  • The file came from the application’s original installer, a verified organizational deployment, or a known-good backup.
  • The detection clearly appears to be a false positive.
  • The application is still trusted and needed.
  • You can reinstall the complete application if restoration causes further problems.

Do not disable antivirus protection simply to install a downloaded DLL. If you restore a quarantined file, update the security product and rescan the complete application directory afterward.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file was quarantined because the entire application is obsolete or untrusted, remove the application instead of restoring the DLL.

Fix 5: Restore the complete program after a move or backup

This error can occur after copying an application folder to another PC, restoring only part of a backup, or moving an installed program to a different drive.

Do not copy only tscrec2.dll into the new folder. The host may also require:

  • Other private DLLs
  • Registry configuration
  • Services
  • Codecs
  • Licensing data
  • Specific folder permissions
  • A matching application release

Uninstall the incomplete copy and reinstall the program using its complete installer. If no installer is available, restore the full application and its configuration from a known-good backup, or obtain the original installation package from the software vendor or organization that supplied it.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit compatibility and dependent runtimes

The reported metadata identifies tscrec2.dll as a 32-bit file. That matters when the host application is also 32-bit.

A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing only the x64 package does not satisfy every 32-bit program.

Do not install a runtime blindly as the first response. Available evidence does not establish a specific Visual C++ Redistributable version required by tscrec2.dll.

Install a runtime when:

  • The application’s installer explicitly requests it.
  • The vendor’s installation instructions name a required runtime.
  • The DLL exists, but the application reports a missing runtime or dependent module.
  • Reinstalling the application restores the DLL but the loader still fails.

Use Microsoft’s official Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page. Select x86 for a 32-bit host application when required by the application’s instructions. Restart Windows after installation and test the original program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the runtime installer fails:

  1. Close running applications.
  2. Temporarily check whether security software blocked the installer.
  3. Run the installer as administrator.
  4. Re-enable security protection immediately afterward.
  5. Repair or remove an existing damaged Visual C++ installation from Installed apps before trying again.

A runtime repair cannot replace the owning application’s missing tscrec2.dll.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the symptom points there

A display or capture driver is not the normal owner of tscrec2.dll, and replacing a graphics driver will not usually restore an application DLL. Consider this path only when the recording program also fails with capture-device, display, or hardware errors.

To check a driver:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Imaging devices.
  4. Right-click the device associated with the recorder.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update driver or install the driver supplied by the computer or hardware manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and test the recording application.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers and matching packages; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.

Avoid changing drivers solely because tscrec2.dll is missing. If the error began immediately after a driver update, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when Windows makes that option available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Use DISM and SFC for broader Windows corruption

DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party TechSmith DLL removed from an application folder.

Use them when several Windows applications are failing, Windows reports broader corruption, or system components are also behaving incorrectly.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If both commands complete without resolving the DLL error, return to repairing or reinstalling the host application.

When the manual process leaves you repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows the findings, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it cannot substitute for reinstalling the legacy program that owns tscrec2.dll.

Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration procedure such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that tscrec2.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.

Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:

regsvr32 tscrec2.dll

It may produce an error stating that the entry point is missing. That result does not prove the DLL is corrupt. It may simply mean the file was never designed to be registered.

Use the application’s installer to restore its files and configuration. Register a DLL only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to do so and provides the correct file and command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Downloading tscrec2.dll from a random DLL site can leave you with:

  • Malware or a tampered binary
  • The wrong application version
  • A 64-bit file for a 32-bit host, or the reverse
  • A DLL with missing dependencies
  • A file that fails its digital-signature or provenance checks
  • New version conflicts inside the application

Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 is especially poor practice. It can make Windows load an unintended version and create conflicts for other software.

The safe sources are the original application installer, a verified organizational deployment package, a known-good backup, or the software vendor’s official download and previous-version channels. Verify the file’s location and digital signature when possible, and keep it beside the application that installed it.

If reinstalling still does not work

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm that the error names the correct executable.
  2. Check whether another copy of the program remains installed.
  3. Remove an incomplete or obsolete installation before reinstalling.
  4. Check Windows Security Protection history again.
  5. Install the application release that originally used the SDK.
  6. Install any runtime explicitly required by that installer.
  7. Check whether the message changed from “missing” to “entry point not found” or “bad image.”
  8. Test the program with its original shortcut rather than a copied executable.
  9. Use System Restore only when the issue began after a recent, identifiable system change and the restore point is trustworthy.
  10. Restore the application from a known-good full backup if the original installer is unavailable.

An “entry point not found” message points toward an incompatible version. A “bad image” or “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, wrong architecture, or an incompatible binary. These are not solved reliably by downloading another copy of the same filename.

When removal is safer than restoration

If the application is abandoned, no longer needed, or launches only a stale startup component, removing it is often the cleanest answer.

Uninstall the recorder from Settings > Apps, then check:

  • Task Manager > Startup apps
  • Task Scheduler
  • Desktop and Start menu shortcuts
  • Any vendor-specific background service

If uninstalling leaves the startup error, disable the stale entry only after confirming that it points to the removed program. Do not delete unrelated DLLs from Windows folders.

FAQ

Is tscrec2.dll part of Windows?

No evidence supports that. It is identified as a TechSmith Camtasia Screen Recorder SDK component, not a normal Windows file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does tscrec2.dll prove that Camtasia is installed?

No. Camtasia is the most direct association, but another application may have bundled the TechSmith recording SDK. Screen Capture Server is one reported example of a third-party host.

Should I install the latest Camtasia?

Only if you still need Camtasia or the affected application is a current TechSmith product. A current installer may not include this legacy SDK file. Use the matching official previous-version installer when the older host requires it.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

Only when the application or its installer indicates that a runtime is needed. For a 32-bit host, the x86 package may be required even on 64-bit Windows. There is no confirmed universal Visual C++ version for this DLL.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. Restore it through the application’s installer or a verified application backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run regsvr32?

Not routinely. There is no evidence that tscrec2.dll exposes the registration procedure that regsvr32 requires.

Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the DLL is present?

The loader may be unable to find a dependency used by the DLL. Repair or reinstall the complete host application rather than replacing the visible file alone.

What if the error appears only at startup?

Find the stale recorder entry in Startup apps or Task Scheduler. If you no longer use the program, uninstall it and disable the leftover startup task.
