The 60-second answer
- Install pending Windows updates and restart the PC.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected program again.
remotepg.dll is known as Remote Sessions CPL Extension. It is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system and is associated with Windows shell, Control Panel, and COM functionality. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or ordinary third-party application component.
If the error remains after DISM and SFC, continue with the repair steps below. Do not copy a DLL from a random download site into the program’s folder.

What is remotepg.dll?
The file description is Remote Sessions CPL Extension, and its publisher is Microsoft Corporation. Historical Windows file inventories place the file at:
%SystemRoot%System32remotepg.dll
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may belong here:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64remotepg.dll
This naming is confusing. System32 is the normal 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications. Windows redirects access between these directories depending on the process architecture. Do not assume that a file in SysWOW64 is 64-bit.
Public inventories document Windows-era versions including 6.1.7601, 6.2.9200, 6.3.9600, 10.0.10586, and 10.0.14393. These historical listings are not a complete inventory for every current Windows installation, so do not use them to choose a DLL manually.
Is remotepg.dll safe?
The file name and Microsoft metadata identify a legitimate Windows component, but a file named remotepg.dll is not automatically trustworthy just because the name looks correct.
Check these two things:
-
Location
The expected location is a Windows system directory such asC:WindowsSystem32or, for a 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows,C:WindowsSysWOW64. -
Digital signature
Right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature, and choose Details. Windows should report that the digital signature is valid and identify Microsoft as the signer.
If a copy is sitting in a game folder, a temporary directory, a downloads folder, or an unfamiliar application directory, do not replace or restore it automatically. Run a Windows Security scan first.
The path check is useful, but it does not prove that the file is the correct version. A damaged or malicious file can be placed in a legitimate-looking directory, which is why Windows servicing is safer than manual replacement.

Why Windows reports remotepg.dll as missing
The message does not always mean that this one file was simply deleted. Common causes include:
| Cause | What it means | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged Windows component | The file or its component-store source is corrupted | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Failed Windows update | An update stopped partway through or left inconsistent files | Complete updates, restart, then repair Windows |
| Antivirus quarantine | Windows Security or another antivirus removed a suspicious file | Review Protection History and verify the signature before restoring |
| Disk or storage corruption | File data or the Windows component store may be damaged | Repair Windows and investigate disk health |
| Malware or unauthorized modification | System files may have been altered | Run a full scan and consider recovery if repairs fail |
| Architecture mismatch | A 32-bit and 64-bit file were confused | Restore the correct Windows copy through servicing |
| Dependency failure | Another Windows library needed by remotepg.dll may be damaged |
Repair Windows rather than replacing only the named file |
Publicly available information does not establish one particular game or installer as the usual trigger for this error. If one program displays the message, that program may simply be the first thing that calls a damaged Windows component.
Fix 1: Install updates, restart, then repair Windows
This is the best starting point because remotepg.dll belongs to Windows.
Install pending updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional update is offered.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
If the update itself fails, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. Windows 10 reached the end of free support on October 14, 2025, so update availability and security support differ from Windows 11.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and allow the operation to finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. The command may appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window simply because the percentage has not changed.
A successful result reports that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows before testing the affected application.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, use a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft documents this pattern:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build. An arbitrary or mismatched source can create another servicing problem.

After DISM completes:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no remaining protected-file problem.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, continue to the escalation steps below.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart Windows and run the command again from an elevated Command Prompt.
The official Microsoft procedure is described in the System File Checker and DISM instructions.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and rerunning SFC/DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of detected Windows issues; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for the Microsoft repair process.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus software can quarantine a Windows file after a false detection, but quarantine is not proof that the file is safe.
Review the detection
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
remotepg.dll.
On Windows 10, the path is Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
Before restoring anything, check:
- The full file path.
- Whether the path is
System32orSysWOW64. - The digital signature.
- The detection name.
- Whether the file was actually identified as malware or only as a potentially unwanted modification.
Restore or allow the item only when the path and Microsoft signature are consistent with a genuine Windows component. If the file is unsigned, located in an application folder, or associated with a broader malware alert, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
To run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
Microsoft explains how to review detections in Protection History.
After restoring a verified Windows file, run DISM and SFC again. They can repair related component-store damage that antivirus software did not address.
Fix 3: Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall
Windows 11 may offer a repair option that reinstalls the current version while preserving applications, files, and settings.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the PC connected to power.
The option may not appear on every Windows 11 release or on managed computers. Microsoft describes the process in its guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.
When the reinstall finishes, restart if prompted and test the application again. This approach is more appropriate than copying an individual DLL when Windows servicing has become inconsistent.
Fix 4: Try System Restore
Use System Restore when the error began after a recent update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.

rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs associated with the selected restore point. It normally does not remove personal documents, pictures, or other personal files, but review the affected-program list before confirming. Microsoft explains the feature in its System Restore documentation.
If the issue started immediately after a Windows update, uninstalling that update may also be appropriate. Use Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates where the option is available. Do not remove security updates casually; use System Restore or Microsoft recovery guidance if you are uncertain.

If DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, and System Restore do not resolve the problem, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use Microsoft’s official pages:
Choose installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture. Back up important personal files before starting. An in-place repair may preserve files and applications, but recovery operations should never be started without a current backup.
If Windows is unstable, malware is suspected, or the repair installation cannot complete, Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain more destructive recovery paths. A clean reinstall should be the final step after backing up personal data.
Do not download remotepg.dll manually
Avoid DLL download repositories and file-copy instructions that tell you to place remotepg.dll in a game or application folder. That approach can fail because:
- The file may contain malware.
- The version may not match your Windows build.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The file may be unsigned or modified.
- A missing dependency may be the real problem.
- Copying it into an application directory can create DLL search-order conflicts.
- It does not repair the Windows component store.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component servicing, System Restore, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, and official Microsoft installation media.
Does regsvr32 apply?
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points, such as DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer.
Historical export data indicates that some remotepg.dll builds expose those functions, so registration is technically related to the file’s COM nature. However, Microsoft does not publish a normal end-user repair procedure telling users to manually register remotepg.dll.
Do not start with:
regsvr32 remotepg.dll
That command may target the wrong architecture, fail because of a dependency, or create the impression that the Windows component has been repaired when it has not. Use DISM and SFC first.
If a Microsoft support professional specifically directs you to register the file, use the correct system directory and architecture. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit versions of regsvr32.exe are different, so choosing the wrong one can produce an architecture error. Manual registration is an advanced, case-specific step, not a standard fix for a missing-file message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Normally, no.
remotepg.dll is a Windows shell and Control Panel component. There is no verified evidence that it belongs to a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX runtime, or .NET installation. Installing those packages merely because the error mentions a DLL can add unnecessary software without restoring the damaged Windows component.
Install or repair an application runtime only when the error names a runtime DLL belonging to that package. For remotepg.dll, repair Windows first.
Are drivers relevant?
Drivers are not the normal owner of remotepg.dll. Update drivers only when Device Manager shows a separate device problem or the DLL error appeared alongside broader graphics, storage, network, or remote-session failures.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
Restart after any driver installation and test again. Do not download a driver from an unverified source.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If manually checking every device and version is the main obstacle, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional and is not required to repair remotepg.dll.
If the error still appears
If the file exists and the program still fails, record:
- The exact error text and error code.
- The application that displays it.
- The full path of
remotepg.dll. - The Windows edition and build.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The result of DISM and SFC.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined anything.
- Whether the problem started after an update or restore point.
The message may identify remotepg.dll while the actual failure involves another dependency. Public dependency inventories associate the file with Windows libraries including ole32.dll, shell32.dll, samcli.dll, and REGAPI.dll. That is another reason to repair Windows as a group rather than replacing one file.
If the file exists in System32 but a 32-bit application cannot load it, do not copy the 64-bit file into the application directory. Check the 32-bit system path and repair Windows servicing instead.
FAQ
Is remotepg.dll a Windows file?
Yes. remotepg.dll is identified as Remote Sessions CPL Extension, a Microsoft Windows operating system component.
Where should remotepg.dll be located?
The historical system location is %SystemRoot%System32. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit counterpart may be in %SystemRoot%SysWOW64.
Should I copy it into my game folder?
No. Copying a system DLL into an application directory can introduce the wrong version, wrong architecture, malware, or DLL search-order conflicts.
Is a missing remotepg.dll error caused by one specific game?
No reliable public evidence identifies one particular game or installer as the usual trigger. The program reporting the error may simply be the first program to call a damaged Windows component.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I run regsvr32?
Not as a first repair. Although historical builds expose registration functions, Microsoft does not publish a general user-facing procedure requiring manual registration. Use DISM and SFC.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first or again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, use a matching repair source, System Restore, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, or official installation media.
Is remotepg.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No verified evidence places it in those redistributable packages. It is a Windows component, so repair Windows rather than installing unrelated runtimes.
Is the file automatically safe because it has the right name?
No. Verify its Windows system path and Microsoft digital signature. Scan suspicious copies before restoring them.
