azroles.dll errors usually indicate that Windows Authorization Manager is missing, damaged, mismatched, or unavailable to the program calling it. Before replacing anything, identify which program displays the error and whether the failure began after an update, cleanup, antivirus action, reinstall, or disk problem.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Write down the answers before changing Windows:
- Which program shows the message? Note the application name and whether Windows displays the error during startup.
- What is the exact wording? Common variants include “azroles.dll is missing,” “was not found,” “the specified module could not be found,” “cannot register azroles.dll,” and “not designed to run on Windows.”
- When did it begin? Check for a recent Windows update, application update, cleanup utility, antivirus detection, failed reinstall, or storage problem.
- Is the caller 32-bit or 64-bit? A 32-bit application can require the 32-bit compatibility copy even on 64-bit Windows.
- Is the error from Windows or one application? This determines whether Windows repair or application repair should come first.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. azroles.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Authorization Manager, also called AzMan. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or ordinary graphics-driver dependency.
What azroles.dll does
Windows Authorization Manager is a role-based authorization system used by legacy applications and administration tools. Microsoft documents azroles.dll as the DLL associated with the azroles.h API and the AzRoles.AzAuthorizationStore COM object. That object provides access to authorization policy stores used by software built around AzMan.
Microsoft deprecated Authorization Manager in Windows Server 2012, but older software and legacy administrative environments can still depend on it. Its presence, version, and architecture depend on the Windows release and build. Microsoft servicing records show separate x86 and x64 files, along with historical ARM variants, so a file copied from another Windows version is not automatically compatible.

The filename may appear as azroles.dll or Azroles.dll. Windows normally displays a description similar to azroles Module. The important distinction is ownership: a missing copy used by Windows should be repaired through Windows servicing, while a private copy stored inside an application directory should be restored through that application’s official installer.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
If only one program reports the problem, start there. The application may have an incomplete installation, a damaged private copy, or a dependency that failed during an update.
Use the Windows repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option should preserve the application’s data while replacing damaged program files. If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it can remove application settings or local data.
If Windows does not offer Repair, use the application’s own maintenance entry:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
Reinstall from the official installer
If repair fails:
- Back up saved data, profiles, licenses, or configuration files belonging to the application.
- Uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official vendor or use the original trusted installation media.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Do not copy a system azroles.dll into the application folder. A program may use a private copy intended for its own build, and replacing it with a Windows copy can create an architecture or version mismatch. If the application is a game, use its launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent feature only when the launcher itself owns the affected files.
If reinstalling the parent application restores the file but the error returns after antivirus scans, continue to the quarantine section below.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
When Windows itself, an older administration tool, or more than one unrelated application reports the error, repair Windows before reinstalling multiple programs.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check Windows Update again until no further applicable updates are offered.
- Test the program.
Windows servicing is safer than obtaining a DLL from another computer because it supplies a file matched to the installed operating-system build, architecture, catalog, and component store.

Fix 3: Run DISM, then System File Checker
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC may need in order to restore protected system files.

Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It can appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window merely because the percentage does not change immediately.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the application.
Understand the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files. The cause may be application-specific, an incorrect architecture, or a missing dependency.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means Windows repaired protected files. Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means more repair is required. Continue with the next section.
- DISM reports that source files could not be found means the component store needs a matching repair source or has a deeper servicing problem.
The manual DISM and SFC process is reliable but gives limited guidance about which component changed, and repeating the commands does not guarantee a different result. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a substitute for a supported Windows repair when the component store is damaged.
Fix 4: Repair SFC failures with DISM and a matching source
First inspect the SFC record:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Open
sfcdetails.txtfrom the desktop. - Look for entries naming
azroles.dllor related repair failures.
If DISM could not obtain files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using installation media or another appropriate Windows source. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not use an arbitrary ISO or guess a source path.
For a source mounted as drive C:, the command format is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with the actual path to a matching Windows source. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test again.
If DISM and SFC still cannot repair Windows, back up personal files and consider an in-place Windows repair using installation media that matches the installed edition. Keep the option to retain personal files and applications when offered. If the disk itself may be failing, run the manufacturer’s storage diagnostics before relying on further repairs.

Defender or another security product may have quarantined a legitimate system or application file, or it may have detected a malicious file that merely used the same name.
Review the event before restoring anything:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
azroles.dll. - Record the threat name, original path, detection time, and action taken.
- Check whether the file was inside the Windows directory or inside the affected application’s folder.
Restore or allow the file only if you can verify that it came from a trusted Microsoft or application installation source and the detection is demonstrably a false positive. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device.
If the path is an application directory, reinstall that application instead of restoring an unknown copy. If the path is a Windows directory, complete a Microsoft Defender scan and use DISM/SFC to restore the protected component. Check the file’s digital signature where a copy exists:

- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies the expected publisher.
A valid signature does not by itself prove that the file belongs in a particular application directory, so also check its path and installation history.

A missing-file message does not always mean the named file is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that azroles.dll exists but a dependency required by it is missing.
Check the calling program
Find the program’s executable in its installation folder, then determine whether the vendor identifies it as 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not infer compatibility solely from the Windows edition.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32normally contains 64-bit system files.SysWOW64is the 32-bit compatibility directory.
These names are confusing by design and are not safe locations for manual copying. A 32-bit application can need the 32-bit Windows component even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
If the error appears only in a 32-bit legacy application, reinstall or repair that application using its official installer. If it appears in a 64-bit Windows component, use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Do not copy between System32 and SysWOW64.
Look for a dependency failure
If the file is present and signed but the program still fails:
- Note the full path shown by the application or diagnostic message.
- Check whether the file is blocked in Properties → General. If Windows shows an Unblock checkbox and you trust the source, review it carefully before using it.
- Repair the application so its dependent files are installed together.
- Check the application vendor’s supported prerequisites.
- Do not install random runtime packages merely because the filename ends in
.dll.
Multiple Visual C++ redistributables installed side by side can be normal. They are relevant when the error names a Visual C++ runtime DLL, not merely because an application fails to load azroles.dll. The same applies to DirectX, .NET, and graphics drivers.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, or application installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files unchanged. It does not replace a backup and may remove an application installed after the selected restore point.

You can also reach it through Settings → System → About → System protection → System Restore. If no suitable restore point exists, return to Windows servicing and application repair rather than using an unrelated DLL.
Fix 8: Reinstall a driver only when the application identifies it
A graphics-driver reinstall is not a primary repair for azroles.dll. Use Device Manager only when the affected application or hardware vendor identifies a driver package as the owner of the failure, or when the problem began with a clearly failed device update.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
For a clean application-owned driver repair, uninstall the device only when the vendor’s instructions call for it, then restart and install the correct package for the exact Windows architecture and hardware model.
Manually identifying the correct driver across many hardware models can be tedious, especially after a system change. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems, while the full version performs driver installation; it is optional, and a driver reinstall remains irrelevant when the caller actually owns azroles.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen regsvr32 applies
Do not use regsvr32 as a general missing-DLL fix. It cannot recreate a deleted file, repair a corrupt binary, correct an architecture mismatch, or supply missing dependencies.
azroles.dll is used through the legacy AzRoles.AzAuthorizationStore COM object, so registration may matter in a specific legacy AzMan deployment. Use registration only when the software’s documentation or administrator explicitly requires it and you have the correct copy for that Windows architecture.
For a 64-bit registration from an elevated Command Prompt, the command may be:
regsvr32 %windir%System32azroles.dll
For a 32-bit registration on 64-bit Windows, the command may be:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe %windir%SysWOW64azroles.dll
A successful registration message confirms only that the registration operation completed. It does not prove that the file is the correct version or that the application’s dependencies are repaired. If registration reports that the module could not be loaded, return to DISM/SFC or application repair instead of trying random copies.
Historical AzMan administration tools
Microsoft’s Windows Server 2003 SP2 Administration Tools Pack is a historical package intended for Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 environments. It is not a current azroles.dll redistributable for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid downloading azroles.dll from an unofficial DLL repository and copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. The file may be:

- Repair or reinstall the affected application from its official source.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Run DISM, then

- Confirm that the application architecture matches the restored component.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point predates the failure.
- Investigate disk health if DISM and SFC repeatedly fail.
- Use an in-place Windows repair when the component store remains damaged.
FAQ
Is azroles.dll malware?
No. azroles.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows DLL associated with Windows Authorization Manager. Malware can use the same filename, however, so verify the file’s path and digital signature rather than trusting the name alone.
Is azroles.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. It belongs to the Windows Authorization Manager API. Installing a Visual C++ package, DirectX package, or .NET runtime normally will not restore it.
Should I copy azroles.dll from another computer?
No. Windows builds, architectures, versions, and servicing metadata can differ. Use DISM/SFC, Windows Update, System Restore, or the official installer for the application that owns the file.
Why does the message say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or damaged module. Repair the parent application or Windows component rather than replacing only the visible filename.
Can I fix this with regsvr32?
Only for a specific legacy COM registration problem. regsvr32 does not repair a missing, corrupt, wrong-version, or dependency-broken DLL.
What if only one old program needs the file?
Repair or reinstall that program first. If it is a legacy AzMan administration tool, verify that its installer supports your Windows release. The historical Server 2003 administration package is not a general solution for current Windows.
What if SFC says it could not repair azroles.dll?
Run DISM again, inspect the CBS log, use a matching Windows installation source, and then rerun SFC. If component-store repair continues to fail, investigate disk health or perform an in-place Windows repair.
