“The program can’t start because wmipiprt.dll is missing from your computer” and “The specified module could not be found” are common forms of this error. The wmipiprt.dll file is a genuine Microsoft Windows WMI component, so the safest repair is to restore Windows system files rather than download a replacement DLL.

The 60-second answer

wmipiprt.dll means WBEM Provider for IP4 Routes. It supports Windows Management Instrumentation classes including Win32_IP4RouteTable and Win32_ActiveRoute, which expose IPv4 routing information to management software and Windows tools.

The file normally belongs under:

%windir%System32wbemwmipiprt.dll

On 64-bit Windows, another system-component area exists under SysWOW64. Do not choose a replacement based on filename, file size, or a third-party “latest version” listing.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands finish. Microsoft documents DISM and System File Checker as the supported tools for repairing corrupted or missing Windows components.

If the error remains, determine whether:

  • Windows actually cannot find the file
  • the file exists but a dependency is missing
  • WMI registration or the WMI repository is damaged
  • an application is reporting the name while another module is the real failure
  • antivirus software quarantined the component
  • broader disk or Windows corruption is present

What wmipiprt.dll does

wmipiprt.dll is part of Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI. Its description is WBEM Provider for IP4 Routes.

Microsoft’s documentation associates the provider with these WMI classes:

  • Win32_IP4RouteTable
  • Win32_ActiveRoute

Applications and administrative tools can query these classes through the rootCIMV2 WMI namespace to obtain IPv4 route information. Microsoft also documents Wmipiprt.mof alongside the provider implementation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is not:

  • A Visual C++ Redistributable file
  • A DirectX library
  • A .NET assembly
  • A normal third-party game file
  • A graphics driver component
  • A file that should usually be copied into an application folder

The documented WMI classes support Windows Vista and later client versions and Windows Server 2008 and later server versions. Current file versions, sizes, and architecture details vary by Windows release, so there is no safe universal size or version to compare against.

Is wmipiprt.dll safe?

A copy in the Windows WMI directory can be a legitimate Microsoft component. The filename alone does not prove that a file is authentic.

Check the path first:

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Click the address bar.
  3. Enter:

text
%windir%System32wbem

  1. Look for wmipiprt.dll.
  2. Right-click it and select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  4. Select the signature and choose Details.

A genuine system copy should be associated with Microsoft. If the file is in a temporary folder, a user profile, an application’s download directory, or an unfamiliar program folder, do not replace or execute it manually. Run a security scan and investigate the file’s origin.

To check the usual locations from an elevated Command Prompt, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
dir "%windir%System32wbemwmipiprt.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64wbemwmipiprt.dll"

A “file not found” result does not by itself prove that Windows is damaged. The error may refer to a dependency, an application-private copy, or a WMI provider registration problem.

What the error actually tells you

The wording matters.

“The program can’t start because wmipiprt.dll is missing”

This usually means the program could not load a file under the name shown. It does not prove that the file is absent from Windows. The application may be looking in the wrong location, or another module required by the DLL may be missing.

“The specified module could not be found”

This message can mean that wmipiprt.dll itself is missing. It can also mean that Windows found the DLL but could not find one of its dependencies.

“The code execution cannot proceed because wmipiprt.dll was not found”

This is another file-load failure. Record the application name and the exact point at which the message appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“wmipiprt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”

This can indicate an incompatible, corrupted, or wrong-architecture file. A DLL copied from another Windows release can create this result even when its filename is correct.

A WMI or management-tool error without a DLL message

If the DLL exists but WMI queries fail, the issue may be the WMI repository, provider registration, permissions, or another Windows component. Do not assume that replacing the DLL will repair WMI.

Causes to check before repairing

Think back to when the error began. Useful clues include:

  • A Windows update or failed update
  • A cleanup or “system optimizer” utility
  • Antivirus quarantine
  • A malware incident
  • A failed Windows repair
  • Disk errors or unexpected shutdowns
  • A recently installed monitoring or administration program
  • A particular application that fails while Windows works normally

Also identify who displays the error. Is it Windows during startup, a management console, monitoring software, a network utility, or an unrelated application? If only one third-party program reports the message, repair that program through its official installer before assuming that Windows is missing the component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the first repair to use when the file is missing, corrupted, or several Windows features are malfunctioning.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

Run DISM

Enter:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Press Enter and wait for it to finish. Keep the Command Prompt window open even if progress appears to pause.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. If it reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue with SFC.

If DISM says that source files could not be found:

  1. Install any pending Windows updates.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Run the DISM command again.
  4. If it still fails, use matching Windows installation media as a repair source.

The source must closely match the installed Windows edition, release, language, and architecture. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary ISO or another computer’s system folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

The useful results are:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files passed the check.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the affected program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows and try again from an elevated Command Prompt.

Restart after the repair:

shutdown /r /t 0

Open the application or Windows tool that produced the error. If it now starts, do not copy a replacement DLL into the application folder.

  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

The manual process of running DISM and SFC repeatedly can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it detects, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the primary repair path.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine a genuine file after a false positive, or malware may have modified system files.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand any detection that names wmipiprt.dll.
  7. Do not restore it unless you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive and the file is genuinely Microsoft-signed.

Restoring a malicious file can expose the computer again. If malware is plausible:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Return to Virus & threat protection.
  2. Select Scan options.
  3. Run a Full scan.
  4. If the system may be compromised, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

If the file was removed by security software, restore Windows through DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement. This gives Windows a chance to install the correct component for the current system.

Fix 3: Verify the WMI repository

Use this step when the file exists but WMI queries, administrative tools, monitoring software, or route-related WMI classes fail.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

If Windows reports that the repository is consistent, do not reset it. Continue investigating dependencies, provider registration, permissions, or the application that is making the WMI request.

If the repository is inconsistent, try the less invasive repair first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
winmgmt /salvagerepository

Restart Windows and test WMI again.

Only consider:

winmgmt /resetrepository

when verification and salvage do not resolve the problem and you understand the consequences. Resetting returns WMI to its initial operating-system state and can affect software that registered its own WMI providers.

Do not delete the WMI repository folder manually. Do not reset the repository merely because wmipiprt.dll is missing.

Fix 4: Do not blindly run regsvr32

A common DLL troubleshooting suggestion is:

regsvr32 wmipiprt.dll

Do not use this as a generic repair step.

Microsoft documents regsvr32 in the context of registering DLL-based WMI providers during provider installation or development. That does not establish that re-registering this Windows provider repairs a missing file, a damaged repository, or a dependency failure.

If the DLL is present and WMI is failing, use winmgmt /verifyrepository and the DISM/SFC process instead. If a specific vendor’s installer says that it must register a private provider, follow that vendor’s documented procedure rather than applying the command to the Windows copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair the application that shows the message

If Windows tools work and one program alone displays the error, determine whether that program owns a private copy or has damaged installation files.

Use the program’s own repair option if available:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local data.

For desktop software without these options, run its official installer and choose Repair, or uninstall and reinstall it from the vendor’s official source.

Do not copy wmipiprt.dll into the program directory unless the application vendor explicitly supplies that exact private dependency. A system WMI provider and an application-private DLL are not interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies

Windows has separate 64-bit and 32-bit system areas. A 32-bit program may search a different system path from a 64-bit program. A DLL from the wrong architecture can produce errors about an invalid image, an entry point, side-by-side configuration, or a module that cannot load.

Do not solve this by trying random copies from both System32 and SysWOW64. Let Windows servicing restore its own files.

If the message says “specified module could not be found” even though wmipiprt.dll is present:

  1. Note the exact application name.
  2. Check whether the error occurs only in that application.
  3. Repair the application from its official installer.
  4. Review Event Viewer for an error at the same time.
  5. Run DISM and SFC.
  6. Check whether another DLL or module is named in the event details.

Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a specific, verified repair for this Windows WMI provider. Consider those runtimes only when the affected application’s own documentation or installer identifies a missing runtime.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when evidence points there

A graphics, network, or chipset driver is not a definitive cause of a missing wmipiprt.dll. Driver work is relevant when the problem began with a device change and Windows reports a device or provider failure.

To inspect a device:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab and Events tab.
  7. Check the device status and any reported error code.

Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the device manufacturer. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open Driver and consider Roll Back Driver, if available. Restart and test again.

When several devices have stale or mismatched drivers, manually identifying the correct package can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or the manufacturer’s support process.

Do not update a driver solely because wmipiprt.dll appears in an error message.

Fix 8: Check disk damage

If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, or the error followed crashes, unexpected shutdowns, or file-system warnings, check the system drive.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

chkdsk /f C:

If Windows says the volume is in use, type Y when asked whether to schedule the check, then restart the computer.

Repeated disk errors should be treated as a broader reliability problem. Back up important files and check the computer’s storage health according to the drive manufacturer’s guidance.

Fix 9: Use System Restore

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after a recent software installation, update, cleanup operation, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  6. Select Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.

System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Test the affected program after Windows restarts.

Fix 10: Reinstall Windows without removing personal files

If normal servicing cannot restore the component, use a Windows repair installation.

On supported Windows 11 systems, check for the built-in repair reinstall:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now, if shown.
  6. Follow the prompts to reinstall the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.

If that option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media and start setup.exe from within Windows. Select the option to keep personal files and apps. Confirm that the installation media matches the installed edition and language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up important files before any repair installation. Do not boot from installation media and choose a clean installation unless you intend to erase the existing Windows installation.

What not to do

Avoid these common but unsafe shortcuts:

  • Downloading wmipiprt.dll from a random DLL website
  • Copying a DLL from another computer
  • Choosing a file by size or “latest version”
  • Copying the file into an application folder
  • Running regsvr32 without provider-specific instructions
  • Deleting the WMI repository
  • Resetting WMI before verifying it
  • Reinstalling unrelated runtimes without evidence
  • Updating every driver simply because a DLL error appeared

Third-party DLL files may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or lack reliable provenance. Even a clean replacement often fails to repair the component store, WMI registration, or the dependency that caused the error.

The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Windows recovery features, matching Microsoft installation media, and the affected application’s official installer.

If SFC could not repair the file

Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

If the problem continues, record:

  • The exact error text
  • The application name
  • Your Windows edition and build
  • The path and digital signature of the DLL
  • The DISM result
  • The SFC result
  • The output of winmgmt /verifyrepository
  • Relevant Event Viewer entries
  • Whether Windows Security quarantined a file
  • Whether the issue began after an update, cleanup, driver change, or disk problem

Use Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the time of the failure.

FAQ

Should I download wmipiprt.dll?

No. Restore it through Windows servicing with DISM and SFC. A downloaded copy can be malicious, incompatible, or the wrong architecture.

Is wmipiprt.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is the Microsoft Windows WMI provider named WBEM Provider for IP4 Routes. Verify the path and Microsoft signature on the affected computer.

Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not as a first response. There is no specific evidence that these runtimes repair this Windows WMI provider. Use them only when the affected application identifies a missing runtime.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

No, not as a general fix. Provider registration is a specific installation or development operation, not a universal repair for this component.

Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file exists?

The message can refer to a missing dependency, incompatible architecture, damaged application installation, or a provider or WMI repository problem.

Is the WMI repository the same as a missing DLL?

No. A missing or corrupt file and a damaged WMI repository are separate problems. Verify the repository before considering salvage or reset.

When should I use System Restore?

Use it when the problem began after a recent change and a restore point predates the failure. If servicing and System Restore fail, use an in-place Windows repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if only one game or program reports the error?

Repair or reinstall that program through its official installer. Do not assume that the program owns the Windows copy of wmipiprt.dll.
