Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitcheshpzime06.dll is an HP DeskJet component, and Windows may report that hpzime06.dll is missing when the related HP printer software cannot load it. The safest repair is to identify the affected HP program and reinstall the correct package for your exact printer model.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, record these details:
- Which program shows the error: HP Printer Assistant, a print or scan utility, an old startup item, or another application.
- When it appears: at Windows startup, when printing, while scanning, or immediately after installing or removing HP software.
- Your printer model: look at the printer itself, its label, or Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Your Windows edition: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- The exact message: note whether it says “not found,” “missing,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
- The file path, if shown: a path inside an HP installation folder is more useful than a copy found in a system directory.
Do not download hpzime06.dll from a random DLL website before completing these checks. A loose file can have the wrong architecture, dependencies, or contents, and replacing it may leave the damaged HP installation untouched.
What hpzime06.dll is
hpzime06.dll is associated with HP DeskJet software. Its described component name is Matterhorn Image Enhancement Module, and it was developed by HP.
It is an application DLL, not a Windows system file, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or Visual C++ redistributable. Windows does not normally install it as a standard protected file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Public file metadata describes this HP component as an older Win32 or 32-bit module. That does not identify one specific DeskJet model, and it does not guarantee that every HP package containing a similarly named component uses the same file. The exact printer model and the HP software installed on the computer matter.
The file normally belongs beside the HP program that uses it or inside that program’s installation directory. It should not automatically be copied into either Windows system folder.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP DeskJet software
This is the most likely solution when the error appears in HP Printer Assistant, while printing or scanning, or after an incomplete driver update.
1. Disconnect the printer
If the printer uses USB:
- Save any open work.
- Turn off the printer if necessary.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
If the printer is connected over Wi-Fi, leave it powered on but do not begin a new print job during the repair.
2. Remove the old HP software
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps and features on Windows 10.
- Search for the printer model and for entries beginning with HP.
- Select the relevant HP printer software.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows when prompted, or restart manually after the uninstall completes.
If the HP software is not listed, continue with the next step. A partial installation may leave the printer entry or startup component behind even when the main program has disappeared.
3. Remove the old printer entry
After restarting:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
You can also open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click the printer, and choose Remove device.
4. Download the package for the exact model
Open HP’s official printer software and driver support area using a browser. Search for the complete printer model, then select your Windows version and architecture if HP asks for it.
Prefer the Full Feature Driver or HP Easy Start package when HP offers one for that model. Do not choose a driver merely because it contains the word DeskJet. Different models can require different software.

If HP does not offer a package for your model and Windows version, do not substitute a similarly named DeskJet driver. Continue to the compatibility section below.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file
An antivirus product may remove or quarantine a file from an old printer package. Do not assume that happened without checking its history.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the HP error began.
- Expand any detection related to the HP installation.
- Read the detected path and action.
Only restore or allow a file after confirming that it came from a legitimate HP installation and that the computer is not showing other signs of malware. Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine detection can put the device at risk. The safer repair is usually to remove the old HP package and reinstall it from HP rather than restore a loose DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
If the file is repeatedly quarantined:
- Update Windows Security.
- Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- If concerns remain, run Microsoft Defender Offline from the same area.
- Reinstall the HP package only after the scan is complete.
Do not add a broad exclusion for the Windows directory or download a replacement DLL to bypass a detection.
Fix 3: Remove an obsolete HP startup entry
If the error appears immediately after signing in, but you no longer use the printer, Windows may be trying to launch an old HP utility whose DLL was removed.
First uninstall the related HP application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Then inspect startup items:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Task Manager.
- Open Startup apps.
- Look for an HP entry associated with the old printer.
- Right-click it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup item stops it from launching at sign-in, but uninstalling the obsolete HP software is preferable. Do not disable unrelated Windows security or hardware entries merely because their names are unfamiliar.

- Review Task Scheduler Library for a task clearly belonging to the removed HP printer software.
- Check its Actions tab before changing anything.
- Disable the task only when its path and description identify the obsolete HP program.
If the error disappears after removing the startup entry, you do not need to place hpzime06.dll back on the computer unless you intend to use that HP software again.
Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is actually missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpzime06.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependent modules.

Use the erroring program and its installation path to investigate:
- Note the executable named in the error, if one is shown.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Confirm whether the associated HP program is still installed.
- In File Explorer, search the HP installation directory for
hpzime06.dll. - If the file exists, do not copy it elsewhere.
- Repair or reinstall the complete HP package instead.
A file that exists but will not load can indicate an incomplete installer, incompatible old software, a missing dependency, or corruption. Reinstalling the complete model-specific package gives the installer an opportunity to restore all related files together.
If the HP installer fails repeatedly, record the installer message and the printer model. The next step is not to copy `hpzime06.dll into multiple folders. It is to determine whether HP still provides a compatible package.
Fix 5: Handle 32-bit HP software on 64-bit Windows correctly
A 32-bit HP application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows compatibility support. That does not mean its DLL belongs in C:WindowsSystem32.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32is used for 64-bit system binaries.SysWOW64contains 32-bit Windows compatibility binaries.- An application can also load private DLLs from its own installation directory.
Because hpzime06.dll is an HP application component, the correct location is determined by the HP installer and the program that loads it. Do not copy the file into both system folders. Do not overwrite an existing Windows file with a downloaded copy.
To check your system type:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Read System type.
- Return to the HP driver page and select the package specifically offered for that Windows version.
If the package is only designed for an older Windows release, it may install but still fail because another dependency or printer utility is incompatible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If the error began after a Windows upgrade, printer replacement, or driver change, remove the old package before installing a newer one.
- Disconnect the USB printer if applicable.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the HP printer software.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove the printer from Settings > Printers & scanners.
- Download the package for the exact model and current Windows version from HP.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Reconnect the printer only when asked.
- Print a test page.
Windows may also provide a built-in driver:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- Choose Add manually if the printer is not found.
- Follow the available printer setup options.
- Print a test page.
A built-in driver may restore basic printing but may not provide HP scanning tools, status utilities, or advanced features. If the old HP software is no longer compatible, replacing it with the Windows driver or replacing the obsolete printer may be the practical solution.
When manually hunting through driver packages and repeating installs, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and handle the driver installation through its full version. It is optional, and for this HP-specific DLL, reinstalling the exact printer software remains the definitive repair.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
SFC and DISM are intended for protected Windows components. They are not the primary method for restoring an HP-owned DLL.

Use them when you also have unrelated Windows symptoms, such as multiple system tools failing, damaged Windows features, or repeated system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the HP application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC can repair protected Windows files, but it should not be described as a guaranteed way to recreate hpzime06.dll. If both commands report no problems and the HP error remains, return to the HP uninstall and reinstall process.
Repeatedly running these commands without identifying what changed is unlikely to repair an incomplete third-party printer installation. If you want assistance identifying broader Windows corruption before repeating manual scans, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues, with repairs handled by its full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the HP application remains the correct fix when only this HP component is missing.

System Restore can change applications, settings, and system files. It does not replace the need to install a compatible HP package if the old one is no longer supported.
What the common error messages mean
“hpzime06.dll was not found” or “is missing”
The program requested the file and Windows could not find it in the expected search locations. The usual causes are an incomplete HP installation, removal by antivirus software, cleanup of an old application, or an obsolete shortcut.
“Error loading hpzime06.dll”
Windows found a reference to the DLL but could not load it. The file may be damaged, incompatible, or dependent on another missing module.
“The specified module could not be found”
This can mean either that hpzime06.dll is missing or that another file required by it is missing. Reinstall the complete HP package rather than replacing only the named file.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
The file may be damaged, incompatible with the current Windows environment, or built for software that no longer works correctly on the installed Windows release. Use the model-specific HP package or the Windows built-in driver.
These are standard Windows loader messages. They do not, by themselves, identify a particular DeskJet model or prove that Windows deleted the file.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 hpzime06.dll
An image-processing module may not support self-registration. If it does not, registration fails. Even if registration succeeds, it will not restore a missing dependency or repair an incomplete HP installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Only use regsvr32 when HP documentation or the installer explicitly requires registration.
Frequently asked questions
Which HP DeskJet model uses hpzime06.dll?
The filename identifies an HP DeskJet imaging component but does not reliably identify one exact printer model. Find the model from the printer label or Windows printer settings, then use that model when downloading software.
Is hpzime06.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with HP DeskJet software and should not be treated as a protected Windows system DLL.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain the wrong version, architecture, dependencies, or tampered contents. Reinstall the complete HP package from HP instead.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The HP installer should place the file where the owning application expects it. Copying it into system directories can create a different problem and usually does not repair the installation.
Why does the error appear even though I removed the printer?
An HP startup item, scheduled task, or utility may remain after the printer was removed. Uninstall the remaining HP software and disable the clearly associated startup entry.
Will SFC restore hpzime06.dll?
Not normally. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while hpzime06.dll belongs to HP software. Use SFC only for broader Windows corruption.
What if HP no longer offers my driver?
Try the Windows built-in printer driver if it supports the model. If essential features do not work and no compatible HP package exists, the old software may not be usable on the current Windows version.
What information is useful if the problem continues?
Record the exact printer model, Windows version and system type, complete error text, program that triggers it, file path if shown, and whether reinstalling the HP package completed successfully. Also check whether Windows Security lists a quarantine event.
