Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
mcrypt.dll is not a Windows system file. It is associated with the older Ma-Config.com hardware-detection software from CybelSoft, which later became DriversCloud. The safest fix is to identify the program still requesting the file, then repair or remove that program rather than downloading an unrelated DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you see:
- The error appears when Windows starts: an old Ma-Config service, startup entry, scheduled task, or shortcut may remain after an incomplete uninstall.
- It appears when opening Ma-Config or DriversCloud: repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.
- It appears during hardware detection: repair the detection application first. Do not assume the file belongs to a device driver.
- It appears after antivirus activity: check Windows Security quarantine before replacing anything.
- It appears after installing, removing, or updating software: use System Restore only if the timing clearly matches that change.
- You cannot identify the caller: inspect the executable path and Event Viewer before changing files.
The historical file listing for mcrypt.dll describes it as “Module de cryptage ma-config.com.” Available archival metadata identifies an older 32-bit file, but that information is not proof that every file with this name is the same file or that current DriversCloud releases still use it.
What the error actually means
Windows loads application DLLs according to the executable’s search path. A private application DLL is normally stored beside the program that needs it, not in C:WindowsSystem32.

These messages may appear:
- “The program can’t start because mcrypt.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mcrypt.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting mcrypt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading mcrypt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “mcrypt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean mcrypt.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while another DLL that it depends on is missing. Reinstalling the complete parent application is therefore more reliable than copying only one file.
Fix 1: Identify the program calling mcrypt.dll
Before repairing Windows or downloading anything, find the application that raises the message.
Check the error dialog
Look for a program name, executable name, or folder path in the message. Names containing ma-config.com, DriversCloud, maconfservice.exe, or a similar application name support the Ma-Config identification.
Check startup programs
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for Ma-Config, DriversCloud, hardware-detection software, or an unknown entry that starts at the same time as the error.
- Right-click the entry and choose Open file location, if available.
- Record the folder path before disabling anything.
If disabling the entry stops the startup message, you have found the caller. This does not repair the application, but it confirms that an orphaned startup item may be responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck installed programs
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Look for Ma-Config, DriversCloud, or a related hardware-detection utility.
- Select the program and note whether Repair, Change, or only Uninstall is available.
You can also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11 and Windows 10. Search for the same names and inspect the available options.
Check Event Viewer
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Select Find from the Actions pane.
- Search for
mcrypt.dll. - Open matching events and note the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
If the event identifies a service, browser plug-in, scheduled task, or executable different from the program you expected, repair that caller instead.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall Ma-Config or DriversCloud
This is the most likely solution when the program is still installed and needed.
Try Windows repair
For a traditional desktop installation:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Ma-Config or DriversCloud entry.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
Microsoft documents these repair paths for Windows applications and programs.
After restarting, open the application again. If it launches and hardware detection works without the error, the repair restored the application’s files or dependencies.
Reinstall from the official source
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Uninstall the parent application from Control Panel > Programs and Features or Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current application only from the official DriversCloud source or an installer supplied by your organization.
- Install it normally.
- Restart again and test the feature that previously produced the error.
Do not assume that a current DriversCloud installation must contain mcrypt.dll. The software changed over time, and an older component may have been replaced. The important test is whether the current, legitimate application runs correctly.
If the installer reports that a newer version is already present, uninstall the existing entry first, restart, and then run the official installer again as administrator.
Fix 3: Remove obsolete startup software
If you no longer use Ma-Config or the old hardware-detection utility, uninstalling it is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.

- Select the application and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Recheck Task Manager > Startup apps.
If an orphaned startup item remains:
- In Task Manager, right-click the entry.
- Choose Disable.
- Right-click it again and select Open file location, if available.
- Remove the startup entry through the application’s own uninstaller where possible.
If the message continues, inspect Task Scheduler:
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
taskschd.msc. - Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for tasks referring to Ma-Config, DriversCloud, or a missing executable.
- Open the task’s Actions tab to confirm its path.
- Disable or delete the task only when you have confirmed it belongs to the obsolete software.
A restart without the error confirms that the old startup mechanism was the cause.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
A recently missing file may have been quarantined.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections involving
mcrypt.dllor the parent application. - Expand the detection and inspect its original file path.
Restore the file only if you have verified that it came from the legitimate installed application and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft documents the quarantine restoration process and Defender’s command-line restore method.
If the file’s source is uncertain, do not restore it. Uninstall the parent program and reinstall it from its official source instead. Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options if the file disappeared unexpectedly.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
mcrypt.dll is not a protected Windows component, so SFC normally will not recreate it. Run these commands when multiple Windows features are damaged, system files are corrupt, or several unrelated applications fail.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. If both commands complete successfully but the Ma-Config error remains, reinstall the parent application. These tools repair Windows components, not a third-party application’s private DLL.
Repeatedly hunting for corrupted system files can be slower than identifying the application that owns the error. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the Ma-Config or DriversCloud application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 6: Consider drivers only if hardware detection broke
mcrypt.dll is not itself a device driver. However, an old hardware-detection program may fail alongside outdated chipset, USB, storage, or graphics drivers.

Update drivers through the hardware manufacturer or your PC manufacturer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and check the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver or download the matching package from the manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the parent application.
Do not use Device Manager to search for mcrypt.dll; it cannot install an application library. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify matching packages; the full version performs the driver installation. For an mcrypt.dll error, however, reinstalling the calling application is still the primary repair.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only when the timing fits
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after an uninstall, cleanup, update, or software installation.
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the change.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, installed programs, drivers, and settings, but it does not remove personal documents. If the error existed before the selected restore point, use application repair or reinstallation instead.

Do not install Visual C++ automatically
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables provide Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. They do not provide the CybelSoft mcrypt.dll file. Install a Visual C++ package only when the parent application’s documentation specifically requires it or its installer includes it.
Do not use regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is for COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points. An ordinary private application library does not normally need registration.
Running:
regsvr32 mcrypt.dll
does not restore a missing file or a missing dependency. It may produce an entry-point or registration error. Use it only when the application vendor explicitly instructs you to register that particular DLL.

Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Copying an unknown DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and security risks. Application DLLs normally belong beside the executable that loads them.
The historical listing for this file identifies a 32-bit build. A 64-bit application cannot generally use an arbitrary 32-bit replacement, and a matching filename does not prove compatible interfaces. A file named mcrypt.dll from a PHP or encryption package is not automatically the Ma-Config file.
If the error still appears
Ask these questions:
- Which executable raises the message?
- Does its folder belong to Ma-Config, DriversCloud, or another product?
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does
mcrypt.dllexist beside that executable? - Does Event Viewer name a different missing dependency?
- Is a scheduled task or service launching the old program?
- Did antivirus quarantine the file?
- Does the error affect only one application or several?
If only one old application fails, repair, reinstall, or uninstall that application. If several unrelated programs fail, investigate Windows corruption, malware, or a broader storage problem.
FAQ
Is mcrypt.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with older Ma-Config.com hardware-detection software from CybelSoft, not with Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Microsoft Visual C++.
Can I download mcrypt.dll by itself?
Avoid random DLL download sites sites. The file may contain malware, have the wrong version or architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. Restore the complete parent application from its official installer.
Should I install the latest DriversCloud software?
If you still need the hardware-detection feature, use the current official software. It may no longer use the old mcrypt.dll component, so the absence of that filename in a current installation is not automatically a problem.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Will SFC restore mcrypt.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while mcrypt.dll is a third-party application file.
Why does the message appear at startup after I uninstalled the program?
An old startup entry, service, shortcut, or scheduled task may still point to the removed executable. Disable or remove that orphaned entry after confirming its path.
Is regsvr32 the fix?
Normally no. DLL registration is unrelated to restoring an application library or its dependencies.
