Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →cnhl12a.dll is a Canon printer-driver component, not a normal Windows system file. When cnhl12a.dll is missing, Windows usually cannot start a Canon printer utility, setup program, print monitor, or driver helper.
The safest repair is to identify the Canon printer or scanner that installed the file, remove its damaged software, and reinstall the package selected for that exact model from Canon’s official Support download portal.
What cnhl12a.dll is
Available file metadata identifies cnhl12a.dll as a Canon component associated with an internal product called LLD. The file appears in driver bundles for older Canon inkjet families, including some PIXMA MG and MP series packages. LLD likely refers to a low-level driver library, although Canon does not publicly document this filename in a release note.
It is not established as:
- A Windows component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX file
- A .NET component
- A general-purpose DLL that should be copied into
System32
Third-party package listings have associated the filename with Canon MG2400, MP990, and MG8200 driver families. That does not prove that every model uses the same build, or that an old file from one model will work with another.

Error messages you may see
Windows or a Canon utility may report:
- “The program can’t start because CNHL12A.DLL is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnhl12a.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading CNHL12A.DLL. The specified module could not be found.”
- “cnhl12a.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library cnhl12a.dll.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. The file may exist while another DLL that it needs is missing. That is why replacing only cnhl12a.dll often fails.
First, identify the affected Canon program
Do this before downloading anything.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and the first line of the error. It may name a Canon executable or utility. Common contexts include:
- A Canon printer setup program
- A printer status monitor
- A print assistant
- A scanner or multifunction-device utility
- A Canon update or maintenance helper
Write down the executable name if one appears.
Check Task Manager
- Reproduce the error.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Processes or Details.
- Look for a Canon process that appears briefly or remains after the error.
- Right-click it and select Open file location, if available.
The folder path can show which Canon package is involved. A Canon installation or driver directory is more meaningful than the DLL filename alone.
Check the shortcut
If the error starts from a desktop or Start menu shortcut:
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the program name and installation folder.
- Select Cancel without changing the shortcut.
Check Event Viewer
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs and select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the problem occurred.
- Check Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and the application path.
Event Viewer may identify the parent executable even when the pop-up only says that a DLL is missing.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon package
This is the most likely solution.
Remove the damaged Canon software
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall the Canon printer driver, maintenance utility, status monitor, or setup package associated with the affected device.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated Canon software unless you know it belongs to the same printer or scanner.
Also remove stale printer entries:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart the computer again.
Download the model-specific package
- Identify the full printer or multifunction-device model from its label or the old printer entry.
- Open Canon’s official Support site.
- Search for that exact model.
- Select your Windows edition and architecture when Canon asks.
- Download the available printer driver and any required Canon utility package.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Connect or turn on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
Do not choose a package merely because it contains a similar-looking DLL. Canon’s model-specific installer supplies the intended folder layout, dependent files, printer configuration, and driver registration.
A legacy Canon package may still work on Windows 11 if Canon provides it for that device and Windows selects it as compatible. If the model has no Windows 11 package, check the final Canon package listed for the supported Windows version rather than mixing files from another model.

- Scan & Copy Handling - Utilize the device’s integrated scanner for efficient scanning and copying operations
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through old driver entries and checking which installed drivers are stale. Its free scan shows what it finds, while the full version handles the driver installation; for this Canon-specific error, reinstalling the exact printer package remains the definitive fix.
Confirm the repair
The repair worked if:
- The Canon utility opens without the DLL message.
- Windows can print a test page.
- The printer appears normally under Printers & scanners.
- The Canon status monitor or setup utility no longer crashes.
If the installer fails, confirm that you selected the correct model, the package supports your Windows release, and your account has administrator rights.
Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software may have quarantined a Canon DLL after an update, cleanup, or mistaken detection.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any item associated with the Canon installation.
- Do not restore the file automatically.
- First verify that it came from the Canon installer and scan the system.
Reinstalling the complete Canon package is safer than restoring an isolated DLL. If Defender repeatedly quarantines the file, do not keep restoring it or create a broad exclusion. Investigate the detection, file location, signature, and installer source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf the file appeared outside a Canon driver or application directory, run a full Microsoft Defender scan. An unexpected DLL in a temporary, user-profile, or unrelated application folder deserves additional scrutiny.
Fix 3: Check architecture and dependencies
The available metadata describes a 32-bit build, while some third-party driver listings place the filename in an amd64 path. That conflict means you should not infer the correct architecture from the filename.
A 32-bit Canon driver can operate on 64-bit Windows when Canon packages it correctly. However, a 64-bit application cannot directly load a 32-bit DLL, and copying a DLL between architecture-specific folders can make the installation worse.
Use the package Canon selects for:
- Your exact printer model
- Your Windows edition
- Your Windows architecture
- The application that is reporting the error
If the file is present but Windows says “specified module could not be found,” reinstall the entire Canon package. The missing item may be a dependency rather than cnhl12a.dll itself.
Fix 4: Remove stale driver packages
A failed upgrade can leave an old printer queue or driver registration pointing to a file that no longer exists.

- Select the Drivers tab.
- Choose the obsolete Canon driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current model-specific Canon package.
Only remove a driver when you are certain it belongs to the affected Canon device. Removing a shared driver can affect another printer using the same package.

- Retry the driver removal.
Fix 5: Use Device Manager for a device-specific repair
Device Manager can reveal whether Windows still sees the Canon hardware with a broken driver.
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon device or a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the General and Driver tabs.
- Select Uninstall device if the driver is clearly damaged.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the Canon package manually from Canon Support.
Do not use Update driver to search random locations for cnhl12a.dll. Device Manager may install a generic Windows driver that prints basic documents but does not restore Canon’s utility or scanner features.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are not primary repairs for a third-party Canon DLL. Use them when you also see broader Windows corruption, failed system updates, damaged built-in applications, or multiple unrelated system errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon application again.
The correct order is DISM first, followed by SFC. These commands repair Windows’ component store and protected system files. They do not download a replacement Canon DLL.

If the commands report that they could not repair everything, save the result and return to the Canon package repair. Repeating SFC without identifying what changed is unlikely to fix a missing private driver file.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of reviewing system problems easier by showing what its scan detects. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent change
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a known driver installation, cleanup, or Windows change and the Canon package is no longer available.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that will change.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Let Windows restart and complete the process.
System Restore does not replace regular personal files, but it can remove recently installed programs or drivers. If the error returns, install the correct Canon package rather than repeatedly restoring the system.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incompatible build, or the wrong architecture. Even a clean copy may not work because the installer also supplies dependencies, configuration, services, and printer registration.
Use the official Canon Support portal for the exact device. Microsoft’s own repair tools are appropriate for Windows components, not for sourcing a private Canon driver file.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not universal DLL storage locations. Copying the file there can create version conflicts and bypass the directory structure expected by the Canon installer.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. Many driver, runtime, and private application DLLs do not provide that function. A command such as:
regsvr32 cnhl12a.dll
does not restore a missing file, repair dependencies, or reinstall a Canon printer. Use it only when Canon’s own installation instructions specifically require registration of that particular component.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without evidence
There is no verified evidence that one of those runtimes is the correct repair for cnhl12a.dll. Install a runtime only when the error names that runtime or the Canon installer explicitly requires it.

Is cnhl12a.dll part of Windows?
No. Available evidence associates it with Canon printer software rather than the Windows operating system.
Which Canon printer installed it?
The exact device cannot be determined from the filename alone. Driver listings associate it with some older PIXMA MG and MP families, but the affected model must be identified from the error context, printer entry, or installation folder.
Can Windows 11 use the old Canon driver?
Sometimes. Use the package Canon lists for the exact model and operating system. Do not assume that an old Windows package is compatible simply because its DLL can be copied into a folder.
Should I register cnhl12a.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command, and this private driver component may not support self-registration.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling a printer?
An uninstall, upgrade, restore, or cleanup can remove the DLL while leaving a shortcut, scheduled helper, printer queue, or utility registration behind. Reinstalling the complete Canon package removes that mismatch.
What if the DLL exists but the error continues?
The application may be missing a dependent file, loading the wrong architecture, or using a damaged driver registration. Reinstall the complete model-specific package instead of replacing only the named DLL.
