btwapi.dll is normally a Broadcom or WIDCOMM Bluetooth component, not a standard Windows system file. The safest fix is to identify the Bluetooth package that owns it, remove the damaged installation, and reinstall the correct driver or software package for your computer.
What this file actually does
The filename is associated with WBTApi DLL, a component of Broadcom Bluetooth Software and older WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software installations. Broadcom documentation identifies btwapi.dll as part of the BTW SDK and describes redistributing it to systems that do not already contain the file.
It commonly works with Bluetooth utilities such as BTTray.exe, the Bluetooth tray process that loads at sign-in. If the Bluetooth software is incomplete, BTTray.exe may fail with messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because btwapi.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because btwapi.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading btwapi.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “btwapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The last message does not prove that the DLL itself is missing. It can also indicate corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a missing dependency.

A legitimate installation may place the file under a path similar to:
C:Program FilesWIDCOMMBluetooth Software
A documented Microsoft Q&A case showed it in:
C:Program FilesWIDCOMMBluetooth Softwaresyswow64btwapi.dll
The exact folder depends on the installed package, the calling application, and whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not treat one path, file size, or version as universal. A reported build is 32-bit version 12.0.0.9980, approximately 0.89 MB, but OEM packages contain different builds.
btwapi.dll should not normally be downloaded separately or copied into C:WindowsSystem32. It is supplied by the software that needs it, usually a Broadcom Bluetooth package from a laptop or desktop manufacturer.
Causes and symptoms
| What you notice | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
BTTray.exe fails at sign-in |
Damaged or incomplete WIDCOMM installation | Reinstall the OEM Bluetooth package |
| Bluetooth disappeared from Device Manager | Missing, rolled-back, or incorrect driver | Reinstall the adapter driver |
| The error began after an update | Incomplete update or incompatible package | Roll back or reinstall the model-specific driver |
| The file vanished after a security scan | Antivirus quarantine | Check Protection History and verify the file |
| Bluetooth works, but one old program fails | That application bundled or expects the DLL | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The file exists but Windows says “specified module” | A dependency may be missing | Reinstall the package and inspect the reported dependency |
| Several unrelated Windows features fail | Broader Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
Fix 1: Reinstall the Broadcom or WIDCOMM package
This is the most likely solution when the error involves BTTray.exe, a Bluetooth tray icon, or Bluetooth controls.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Find the installed Bluetooth software
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for entries containing Bluetooth, Broadcom, or WIDCOMM.
- Note the product name and publisher.
- If the entry has an Advanced options menu, choose Repair or Reset when available.
You can also check the older list:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for Broadcom Bluetooth Software, WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software, or a similarly named OEM Bluetooth package.
If repair does not restore the file:
- Select the Bluetooth software.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Visit the support page for the exact computer model.
- Download the Bluetooth or wireless package supplied for that model and Windows version.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Restart again.
Use the computer manufacturer’s package rather than searching only for “Broadcom Bluetooth.” Bluetooth hardware can be integrated with a wireless card, and a package for another Broadcom adapter may contain the wrong files.
For instance, an official Dell package may contain both Broadcom wireless and Bluetooth drivers, but that does not make it suitable for every Dell computer or every Broadcom device.
Confirm that the repair worked
After restarting:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Confirm that Bluetooth can be turned on.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Check that the adapter has no yellow warning icon.
- Confirm that the
BTTray.exeor missing-DLL message no longer appears.
If the installer reports that the hardware is unsupported, stop and find the driver using the exact model and serial information on the manufacturer’s support page.
Fix 2: Reinstall the Bluetooth driver through Device Manager
Use this route when Bluetooth disappeared, the adapter has a warning icon, or the problem began after Windows Update.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the Broadcom or Bluetooth adapter.
- Select Properties and open the Details tab.
- Choose Hardware Ids from the Property list.
- Record the values shown. They help identify the exact adapter.
- Close Properties.
- Right-click the adapter again.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver, select that option only when you already have the correct OEM installer available.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Windows may reinstall a compatible driver automatically. If it does not:

- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Check Advanced options > Optional updates for driver updates.
- Install the manufacturer’s Bluetooth package if Windows still does not restore the adapter.
Microsoft recommends obtaining the driver from the computer manufacturer when Device Manager does not provide the correct version.
Manually comparing many adapter models and package revisions can be tedious, especially after a Windows upgrade. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, but its free scan only identifies issues and the full version performs the driver installation. Reinstalling the exact OEM Bluetooth package remains the definitive fix when btwapi.dll belongs to that package.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product may remove the DLL while leaving the rest of the Bluetooth installation behind.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
btwapi.dll. - Expand the entry.
- Check the full file path, detection name, publisher information, and date shown by Windows Security.
Only consider restoring the file if all of the following are true:
- The path belongs to the expected Broadcom or WIDCOMM installation.
- The file is signed or otherwise verified as part of the OEM package.
- The detection appears to be a false positive.
- You obtained the package from the computer manufacturer.
Do not restore an unsigned copy downloaded from an unfamiliar DLL site. Do not create a blanket antivirus exclusion for the filename.
If the file was quarantined and the package is trustworthy, restore or allow it from Protection History as appropriate, then reinstall the official Bluetooth package so all companion files are restored consistently. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again unless it is explicitly allowed.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” can mean that btwapi.dll exists but another file it requires does not.
First, check the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search the installation folder for
btwapi.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Details tab.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
Do not replace the file merely because its name is correct. A same-named DLL can have the wrong architecture, exports, version, or dependencies.
Some public dependency listings associate certain builds with Microsoft Visual C++ runtime files, but that relationship is not confirmed for every Broadcom build. Install a Visual C++ Redistributable only when the installer or diagnostic specifically identifies it as missing.
A 32-bit application requires the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows. The x64 and x86 Visual C++ runtimes can coexist. Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page, and do not assume that the newest package replaces every older runtime required by a legacy application.

Fix 5: Repair one old application
If Bluetooth works normally and only one old application or game reports btwapi.dll, the application may have bundled or hard-coded a Broadcom component.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original developer or publisher installer.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in Repair, Verify, or Verify integrity of files function. Do not copy btwapi.dll into the application folder unless the original publisher specifically instructs you to do so.
If only one Windows account has the problem, test the application from another account. A damaged user profile or a stale startup entry may be involved.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM are useful when several unrelated Windows functions are failing. They are not the primary way to restore a third-party Broadcom DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands finish.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Bluetooth again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the process after restarting or review the CBS log through Microsoft support guidance.
SFC may not restore btwapi.dll because Broadcom supplies it rather than protected Windows component storage.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues, but its free scan only shows findings and the full version performs repairs. If the missing file belongs to a Bluetooth package, reinstalling that package remains the definitive repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore when the error started immediately after installing a driver, Bluetooth utility, or Windows update.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back drivers, registry settings, system files, and installed programs without removing personal documents. If no restore point exists, return to the OEM package and application-repair steps before considering broader Windows recovery options.

There is no verified evidence that every btwapi.dll build is a self-registering COM DLL. Running this command is therefore not a recommended fix:
regsvr32 btwapi.dll
It may produce an error such as a missing entry point, or appear to succeed without repairing the Bluetooth installation. Reinstall the original package instead.
Why random DLL downloads and manual copying fail
A standalone download can have:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- An incompatible version.
- Missing Broadcom companion files.
- Missing runtime dependencies.
- A damaged or malicious payload.
- A signature that does not match the OEM installation.
A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows may use a SysWOW64 or application-specific location. The Windows edition alone does not tell you which copy is required. Never assume that placing a file in System32 is correct.

FAQ
Is btwapi.dll part of Windows?
It is not normally a standard Windows system DLL. Available evidence associates it with Broadcom or WIDCOMM Bluetooth software and OEM Bluetooth packages.
Can I delete the error by disabling BTTray.exe?
You can disable an obsolete tray utility after confirming that the Bluetooth package is no longer needed, but this does not repair the underlying installation. If Bluetooth controls or pairing features are affected, reinstall the package instead.
What if Bluetooth works but the message keeps appearing?
A leftover startup entry may be launching BTTray.exe after an incomplete uninstall. Repair or reinstall the Bluetooth package first. If the computer no longer has the Broadcom adapter, uninstall the obsolete WIDCOMM software rather than restoring the DLL.
Does the known 32-bit version work everywhere?
No. 12.0.0.9980 is one reported build, not a universal version. OEM packages contain different files, paths, and architectures.
