wfcrunui.dll Won’t Load: Rebuild the Citrix Client Safely

“The program can’t start because wfcrunui.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”

You may also see “There was a problem starting wfcrunui.dll,” “Error loading wfcrunui.dll,” or “The code execution cannot proceed because wfcrunui.dll was not found.”

The 60-second answer

wfcrunui.dll is a legacy Citrix file, not a Windows system DLL. It is identified as the Remote Application Runtime Resource DLL (Win32) and is associated with older Citrix ICA Client and Citrix Receiver installations.

The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Citrix application that produced the error. Do not download the DLL separately, copy it into System32, or run regsvr32 against it. The correct Citrix package restores the file together with its language resources, dependencies, permissions, and launcher configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your organization manages Citrix, use its approved installer or contact the administrator before installing a different client version.

Why wfcrunui.dll errors appear

The file is a 32-bit application component. Older Citrix installations commonly placed it below a path similar to:

C:Program Files (x86)CitrixICA Clientresourceen

The exact folder varies by Citrix release, language, installation type, and whether the client was installed for one user or all users. A 64-bit Windows computer can still require this 32-bit Citrix component.

Typical causes include:

  • An incomplete or corrupted Citrix Receiver or Workspace installation
  • An interrupted Citrix update or uninstall
  • Old ICA Client files mixed with a newer Workspace installation
  • Antivirus software quarantining or deleting the file
  • A legacy application launching an old Citrix executable such as wfcrun32.exe
  • A 32-bit business application expecting an older Citrix runtime
  • A missing dependency even though wfcrunui.dll itself is still present
  • An untrusted replacement or a file copied into the wrong directory

A current Citrix Workspace app release may use a different internal layout and may not contain this older filename. Do not assume that every current release includes wfcrunui.dll.

Fix 1: Reinstall the Citrix client

This is the most reliable fix because it repairs the whole installation rather than replacing one file.

Remove the existing installation

  1. Close Citrix sessions and any published applications.
  2. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  4. Search for Citrix Workspace or Citrix Receiver.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
  6. Follow the removal wizard.
  7. Restart Windows.

For older Windows installations:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
  3. Select Citrix Workspace app or Citrix Receiver.
  4. Choose Uninstall and restart the computer.

Install the approved package

Download Citrix Workspace app only from Citrix’s official download page or your organization’s software portal. Managed environments may require a particular version, and installing the newest public release may not support an older published application.

Run the installer normally. If Windows asks for administrator approval, select Yes. Restart Windows after installation and try opening the .ica file or published application again.

It worked if:

  • Citrix Workspace opens without the DLL message
  • The .ica file launches through Citrix
  • The published desktop or application reaches its sign-in or session screen
  • The Citrix installation directory contains its expected files and resources

If the normal uninstall leaves the same error, continue with a clean installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Citrix clean installation

Download the approved Citrix installer first, but do not start the installation yet. Open Command Prompt as administrator:

  1. Open Start and type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Change to the folder containing CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe, if necessary.
  5. Run:
CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /CleanInstall

Citrix’s clean-install option removes leftover files and registry values before installing Workspace app again. Restart Windows when the process finishes, then test the affected application.

Do not combine files from different Receiver and Workspace releases. In particular, do not copy an old wfcrun32.exe launcher into a newer Citrix directory.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed the file. Check this before repeatedly reinstalling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from Start.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent quarantine and removal events.
  5. Open any event related to Citrix or wfcrunui.dll.
  6. Check the detected path, publisher, signature information, and detection name.

Do not restore a file solely because its filename looks familiar. A file named wfcrunui.dll outside a Citrix installation directory is not automatically legitimate.

The safer response is to reinstall Citrix from the official source. If the file came from a trusted, signed Citrix installation and your organization’s security process confirms a false positive, ask the security administrator to handle the restoration or exclusion.

Rank #3

It worked if the Citrix installation completes without another quarantine event and the application launches normally. If the file is removed again, stop restoring it manually and have the security team review the detection.

Fix 3: Confirm that the caller is actually Citrix

A missing-DLL message does not always identify the real owner clearly. Find out which program is launching the file.

Check when the message appears:

  • Immediately after opening a downloaded .ica file
  • When starting Citrix Workspace or Receiver
  • When launching a published desktop
  • When opening a specific legacy business application
  • After a Citrix update, downgrade, cleanup, or security alert

Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for Citrix Workspace or Receiver. If neither is installed, the affected program may contain an old Citrix dependency or may be attempting to use a removed client.

If the error appears only for one published application, ask the Citrix administrator whether that application requires a legacy ICA Client component. Installing an unsupported old client on a managed computer can create additional security and compatibility problems.

Fix 4: Check the 32-bit installation path

Third-party file inventories identify wfcrunui.dll as a 32-bit DLL. On 64-bit Windows, older 32-bit Citrix installations commonly use:

C:Program Files (x86)CitrixICA Client

Some 64-bit Citrix installations use:

C:Program FilesCitrixICA Client

The resource file may be inside a language directory below the ICA Client folder. Do not move it between these locations. Do not place it in:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those folders contain Windows system components and are not the normal home for this Citrix application DLL. System32 and SysWOW64 also have architecture-specific behavior that makes blind copying especially unsafe.

A 32-bit application needs the correct 32-bit Citrix component. Installing a modern package that no longer contains this legacy file may not satisfy an old caller. In that situation, the administrator may need to update the published application or provide an approved legacy Citrix build.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems

wfcrunui.dll is not normally supplied by Windows, Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Therefore, System File Checker will not usually recreate it.

Use DISM and SFC when you also see damaged Windows features, failed updates, unexplained system crashes, or other missing Windows files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Reinstall Citrix and test again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. A successful scan may report that corruption was repaired, but it does not prove that the Citrix DLL was restored. The Citrix reinstall remains the definitive repair for this file.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the actual problem is a damaged Citrix package. Outbyte PC Repair can show Windows problems through a free scan, while repair actions are handled by the full version; reinstalling Citrix remains the definitive fix when this specific application file is missing.

Fix 6: Update drivers only if the failure includes a device problem

A driver update does not normally restore wfcrunui.dll. Use Device Manager only if the Citrix failure is accompanied by display, network, audio, smart-card, or other device errors.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the category for the affected device.
  3. Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  5. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  6. Test Citrix again.

If the device has a warning icon, right-click it, choose Properties, and review the General tab for the device status. For managed computers, obtain drivers from the hardware manufacturer or your organization rather than using random driver packages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually hunting through hardware versions can be slow when several devices are stale. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing which drivers need attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is not a substitute for reinstalling the Citrix application that owns wfcrunui.dll.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration routines such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.

There is no established evidence that wfcrunui.dll should be manually registered. Running a command such as this is normally irrelevant:

regsvr32 wfcrunui.dll

It may produce a message that DllRegisterServer was not found, and it will not restore missing dependencies, language resources, permissions, or the rest of the Citrix installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reinstalling Citrix still fails

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm whether the error names wfcrunui.dll or only says that a module could not be found.
  2. Check whether the file exists inside the Citrix installation tree.
  3. Review Windows Security Protection history.
  4. Verify that the .ica file is associated with Citrix Workspace.
  5. Test with a newly created Windows user profile if the failure is limited to one account.
  6. Check Citrix installer logs for a failed component or permission error.
  7. Confirm whether the Microsoft Store edition of Citrix Workspace is installed. Store installations have separate cleanup behavior and should not be handled with an older Receiver cleanup utility.
  8. Ask the administrator whether the published application requires a legacy client.
  9. If the failure began immediately after a system change, consider System Restore.

To open System Restore, press Windows + R, enter:

rstrui.exe

Press Enter, choose a restore point from before the failure, and follow the wizard. System Restore rolls back system settings, registry state, drivers, and installed programs while preserving personal files.

FAQ

Is wfcrunui.dll a Windows file?

No. It is a Citrix application DLL associated with older ICA Client and Receiver components.

Should I download wfcrunui.dll separately?

No. Isolated DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete dependency set. Use the official Citrix installer or your organization’s approved package.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. Keep the file in the Citrix application directory. Copying it into a Windows folder can create version and architecture conflicts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does installing Visual C++ fix it?

Not usually. There is no reliable evidence that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET directly installs this Citrix file. Reinstall the Citrix package first.

Does every current Citrix Workspace release include this DLL?

Not necessarily. wfcrunui.dll is associated with legacy Citrix components, and current releases may use a different package layout. A legacy application may require an approved older client or an application-side update.

What if the message says the specified module could not be found?

The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstall the complete Citrix package rather than downloading another DLL. The installer logs and the calling executable can help the administrator identify the missing component.
