ansmpi.dll is an ANSYS component used by Mechanical, Mechanical APDL, Workbench-linked solvers, and other ANSYS products that use MPI-based parallel processing. It is not a Windows system DLL, Visual C++ runtime, or DirectX file.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact ANSYS release that produced the error. Do not download ansmpi.dll into System32, copy it from another computer, or mix it with MPI files from a different ANSYS version.
What ansmpi.dll errors mean
Common messages include:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because AnsMPI.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.”
- “This program can’t start because AnsMPI.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “AnsMPI.dll was not found.”
- “The procedure entry point MPI_Get_library_version could not be located in …AnsMPI.dll.”
- “The program cannot start because AnsMPI.dll is missing.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
A missing-file message usually indicates an incomplete or damaged ANSYS installation. An entry-point message more often indicates incompatible MPI components, mixed ANSYS releases, or a dependency being loaded from the wrong location.

A public ANSYS installation may contain the file in a path resembling:

Your release may use a different directory, filename capitalization, architecture folder, or MPI implementation.
Fix 1: Repair the matching ANSYS installation
This is the most likely solution.
- Close Workbench, Mechanical, Mechanical APDL, PyMAPDL sessions, and any ANSYS background processes.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Search for ANSYS.
- Select the affected ANSYS release or installation entry.
- Choose Modify, Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Start the official ANSYS Installation Launcher if the installed-app entry does not offer repair.
- Select the same product and release that originally produced the error.
- Include the MPI or parallel-processing components.
- Complete the repair and restart Windows.
If the installer offers Install MPI for Ansys Parallel Processing, use that workflow rather than downloading an individual DLL.
After restarting, launch ANSYS from the Start menu or Workbench shortcut. Do not test by double-clicking an arbitrary ANSYS.exe.
If repair is unavailable
Uninstall only the damaged ANSYS release through its supported uninstaller, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original institutional or official installation media. Keep other ANSYS releases installed if they are still needed, but do not copy files between their version directories.
Repair worked if the application starts and the original loader message disappears. If the same error remains, continue with the MPI and launcher checks below.
Fix 2: Install the MPI component required by ANSYS
Some ANSYS releases include Microsoft MPI in their installation media. Others provide an installer option that installs or configures it separately. The required MPI package depends on the ANSYS release.
- Open the ANSYS Installation Launcher.
- Select Install MPI for Ansys Parallel Processing.
- Choose Install Microsoft MPI if that is the option shown for your release.
- Complete the Microsoft MPI installer.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch ANSYS through Workbench or the supported product shortcut.
Microsoft also distributes MS-MPI through its official download page. Use it only when the ANSYS documentation or administrator identifies it as the compatible package: Microsoft MS-MPI download.

Installing Microsoft MPI alone does not recreate AnsMPI.dll. That file belongs to the ANSYS installation, and the MPI runtime must also match the ANSYS release and architecture.

If MPI installation produces an MPI_Get_library_version entry-point error, stop adding DLLs. That message points to incompatible or mixed MPI binaries. Repair the ANSYS installation and remove stale MPI entries from the launch configuration or PATH.
Fix 3: Start ANSYS through the correct launcher
Launching a solver executable directly can bypass environment setup that Workbench or the ANSYS launcher normally performs.
- Press the Windows key.
- Search for ANSYS Workbench or the exact ANSYS product installed.
- Start the shortcut provided by ANSYS.
- Open or create the project.
- Launch Mechanical or the solver from inside Workbench.
- For PyMAPDL, check that its configured executable points to the complete supported ANSYS installation.
Do not assume that a file named ANSYS.exe is the correct Workbench entry point. Older installations may use a versioned Workbench launcher such as runwb2.exe.
If Workbench starts but a solver fails, the base installation may be present while the MPI component, licensing, firewall, or parallel configuration remains damaged.

Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate ANSYS binary after an update or repair.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
AnsMPI.dllor the ANSYS installation directory. - Verify that the file belongs to the expected ANSYS installation before restoring anything.
- Restore it only when the installation source is trusted.
- Run the ANSYS repair again after restoration.
- Ask your administrator to create an appropriate vendor-approved exception if the file is repeatedly removed.
Do not disable antivirus protection permanently. If files disappear again after repair, run a full or offline Microsoft Defender scan and check disk health before assuming the ANSYS installer is at fault.

Fix 5: Check for mixed releases and incorrect architecture
The file can exist and still fail to load if Windows finds an incompatible dependency first.
Check these points:
- Keep each ANSYS release in its own versioned directory.
- Do not copy
AnsMPI.dllbetween releases. - Confirm that the application and ANSYS installation use the same architecture.
- Check whether an older ANSYS or MPI directory appears earlier in the system
PATH. - Remove obsolete releases only through their supported uninstall process.
- Avoid manually adding random ANSYS
bindirectories toPATH.
To inspect the current path:
- Press Windows key, type
environment variables, and select Edit the system environment variables. - Select Environment Variables.
- Review both User variables and System variables.
- Select
Path, choose Edit, and look for obsolete ANSYS or MPI entries. - Record the existing values before changing anything.
- Remove only entries that clearly belong to an uninstalled or unsupported release.
- Restart Windows and test through the official launcher.
If the file exists but Windows still reports it as missing, a dependency may be absent. Use the ANSYS installer’s repair function rather than replacing individual dependencies manually.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other Windows apps also fail
DISM and System File Checker do not recreate ANSYS files. They are appropriate when Windows itself is damaged or several unrelated applications report loader errors.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the ANSYS repair.
Microsoft documents these commands in its Windows image repair guidance.
When these commands report successful repairs, test ANSYS again. If they report no violations but AnsMPI.dll is still missing, return to the ANSYS installer. The problem is probably not a Windows system-file problem.

A graphics or hardware driver is not the normal cause of a missing AnsMPI.dll. Consider driver work only if ANSYS also crashes during parallel execution, Device Manager reports a device problem, or other applications fail with hardware-related errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, and any device category named in the ANSYS error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean vendor update, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not replace AnsMPI.dll as a substitute for a driver repair.

Manually checking every device and matching driver packages is tedious and can leave an incompatible version behind. Do not download the DLL from a random website
A downloaded copy may contain malware, target another ANSYS release, use the wrong architecture, or depend on MPI files that are not installed. Copying it into System32 can also make future repairs and troubleshooting less predictable.
Use the official ANSYS installer, your organization’s approved deployment package, or the compatible Microsoft MPI package identified by ANSYS documentation.
Do not copy it from another computer
Two computers may have different ANSYS releases, patches, MPI implementations, licensing configurations, or architectures. A file that works on one system can create an entry-point or dependency error on another.
Do not register it with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. AnsMPI.dll is a computational MPI library, not a normal COM component. Registering it will not repair the installation and may produce another entry-point error. Microsoft documents the command’s intended use in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX first
Those runtimes are not the evidence-led first fix for an ANSYS-only AnsMPI.dll error. Consider them only if ANSYS diagnostics identify a specific missing runtime dependency.
If the error remains
Collect these details before contacting ANSYS support or your administrator:
- ANSYS product and release
- Full error text
- Whether
AnsMPI.dllexists in the expected ANSYS directory - The executable path being launched
- Whether Workbench starts normally
- Whether the problem affects serial runs, parallel runs, or both
- Antivirus quarantine history
- Recent updates, failed repairs, uninstallations, or disk cleanup
- Installer and application logs
An entry-point failure, a file-present-but-unloadable error, and a genuinely missing file require different repairs. Providing the exact message and executable path prevents support from treating all three as the same problem.

FAQ
Is ansmpi.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with ANSYS and is normally installed inside an ANSYS directory, not Windows System32 or SysWOW64.
Does Microsoft MPI replace ansmpi.dll?
No. Microsoft MPI may provide the MPI runtime required by a particular ANSYS release, but it does not replace the ANSYS-specific AnsMPI.dll.

Usually, repairing or reinstalling the exact affected release is the most reliable fix, especially when the file is missing after an update, failed installation, antivirus quarantine, or manual deletion.
Why does the file exist but still fail?
A dependency may be missing, the wrong architecture may be loaded, or Windows may be finding an incompatible MPI binary earlier in its search path.
Does this apply to PyMAPDL?
Yes. PyMAPDL can expose the problem when it launches an incomplete or incorrectly configured ANSYS installation. Verify its configured executable and repair that installation.
Should I run System Restore?
System Restore is a fallback if the failure began immediately after a known system change and ANSYS repair did not help. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the matching ANSYS components.
