Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →windows.networking.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a random game file. If Windows says it is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair Windows or the application that triggered the error rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file implements parts of the Windows Runtime networking APIs, including hostnames, endpoints, sockets, WebSockets, and network information. Microsoft documents Windows.Networking.dll as the implementation library for this API namespace. Microsoft’s Windows.Networking documentation also notes a specific Windows Server Media Foundation condition described below.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 5–30 minutes
Start here if the error appears only when launching one game or application. A damaged application update, incomplete installation, or incompatible bundled component can make the program report a Windows DLL even when the Windows file itself is healthy.
Use the application’s repair option
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
Repair normally preserves the application’s data. If the error remains and a Reset option is available, understand that Reset can remove the application’s local settings and data. Back up saves or configuration files first.

For a game, open its official launcher and look for Verify files, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or a similarly named command. This compares the installed files with the launcher’s known-good copies and replaces damaged application files. It does not replace Windows system components, so a successful verification followed by the same DLL error points more strongly toward Windows servicing or a missing dependency.
If repair and file verification do not help:
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or the launcher’s official source.
- Install it again.
- Test before adding unofficial modifications, overlays, or copied DLL files.
If several unrelated applications fail with the same message, stop repeatedly reinstalling the one program. That pattern suggests Windows corruption, a dependency problem, malware, or a storage issue.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus restart time
Windows Update can restore a missing or damaged protected component and install a compatible servicing update.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Launch the affected application again.

This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows installation and update configuration. Microsoft describes the process in its guide to reinstalling the current Windows version.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use this when windows.networking.dll is missing from the Windows system directories, multiple programs fail, Windows features behave abnormally, or an update appears to have damaged system files.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store. Run DISM first.

A successful result usually says that SFC found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow once.
For more detail, Microsoft stores SFC information in:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
To extract the relevant entries to your desktop, run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
If corruption persists, check the CBS log, review recent update or disk errors in Event Viewer, and move to System Restore or an in-place repair rather than copying a random DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems involved and show what needs attention; its repair function is handled by the full version, and it is not required when Windows servicing resolves the issue.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a suspicious replacement, a damaged update, or a false detection. This is a possibility, not proof that antivirus commonly targets this particular DLL.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
Windows.Networking.dllor the application that reports the error.
Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the detection concerns the genuine Windows component and that the system is not infected. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance warns that restoring a real threat can expose the computer.

If you suspect malware, update Windows Security, run a full scan, and investigate any detections before repairing system files. If the file was quarantined and the detection is confirmed as a false positive, use the security product’s documented restore and exclusion process, then run DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Confirm the correct system directory and architecture
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
On 64-bit Windows, native system DLLs normally reside in:
%WINDIR%System32
A 32-bit counterpart may reside in:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
The names are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 is used for shared 32-bit files through WOW64 redirection. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
A 32-bit program cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit program cannot load a 32-bit DLL. Do not copy a file into the application folder merely because the filename matches. The correct build, architecture, signature, dependencies, and component-store registration all matter.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
To check whether only one architecture fails, test another affected application if available. A failure limited to a 32-bit application may involve its 32-bit dependency path, while failures across both architectures point more toward Windows or shared dependencies. See Microsoft’s explanation of running 32-bit applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point there
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A network driver or storage problem can contribute to broader application or Windows instability, but updating a driver is not a direct replacement for windows.networking.dll.
Use Device Manager when networking, graphics, storage, or other hardware also shows errors:

- Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters, Display adapters, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and inspect the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Prefer drivers from the computer, motherboard, or device manufacturer when Windows cannot find a suitable update. Do not remove a functioning driver solely because a DLL error names networking.
Hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of many drivers is stale can be slow. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the driver installation is handled by the full version, and driver replacement is not a substitute for reinstalling a damaged Windows component.
Fix 7: Apply the Windows Server 2012 exception
Time needed: 10–20 minutes, plus restart time
This applies only to the documented Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 condition. Microsoft documents that Windows.Networking classes can fail when Media Foundation is disabled.
On the affected server:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:ServerMediaFoundation
- Restart the server.
- Test the application or service again.
This is not the standard fix for ordinary Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs. Microsoft describes the condition in its Windows.Networking namespace documentation.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or an in-place repair
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
Use System Restore when the error began after a driver, update, application, or system change and a restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the rollback.
System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files. Changes made after the selected restore point may be undone. Microsoft explains the limits in its System Restore guide.
If repair commands and System Restore fail, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important files first. During Setup, choose Keep personal files and apps when that option is offered. Microsoft’s installation-media repair instructions explain the process.

Do not download windows.networking.dll from a random DLL repository or copy it from another computer. The file may be malicious, built for the wrong Windows version, the wrong architecture, incorrectly signed, or missing dependencies. Even a genuine file may not match the component store that Windows uses for servicing.

There is no identified Microsoft standalone Windows.Networking.dll redistributable, Visual C++ package, DirectX installer, or separate runtime intended to replace this Windows component. Install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET only when the actual error names a runtime from that package.
regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point. Registering Windows.Networking.dll does not restore a missing protected component and may simply produce an entry-point or registration error. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration tool, not a universal repair utility.
What usually caused the error
The likely cause depends on the scope of the failure:
| Symptom | More likely cause | Best first repair |
|---|---|---|
| One game or application fails | Damaged installation or incompatible update | Verify, repair, or reinstall that application |
| Several applications fail | Windows component or dependency corruption | Windows Update, then DISM and SFC |
| Error began after cleanup or security action | Quarantine or an invalid file replacement | Check Protection History and scan the system |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Corruption, wrong architecture, bad dependency, or copied DLL | Remove the replacement and repair Windows |
| Server 2012 or 2012 R2 only | Media Foundation feature disabled | Enable ServerMediaFoundation |
| Failures accompany disk or profile problems | Broader storage, malware, profile, or servicing damage | Review logs, scan, test another profile, then restore or repair Windows |
FAQ
Is windows.networking.dll safe?
The genuine Windows component is legitimate Microsoft software. The filename alone does not prove that every copy is genuine, so rely on Windows servicing and official application installers rather than an arbitrary downloaded copy.
Which Windows versions contain it?
It is part of Windows versions that provide the Windows Runtime networking APIs. Public metadata shows multiple build and architecture variants, so there is no single universal version or file size.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this filename alone. Those packages are relevant only when the error specifically names a runtime DLL supplied by them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does the file belong to my game?
Windows supplies Windows.Networking.dll. A game may call the Windows networking API, but that does not make the game the publisher of the system DLL. If only the game fails, repair the game first.
What if SFC cannot repair the files?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If it still reports unrepaired files, inspect CBS.log, try System Restore, use the Windows 11 update-reinstall option when available, or perform an in-place repair from official installation media.
Can I copy the DLL into the game folder?
Do not do so. A matching filename does not guarantee a matching build, architecture, signature, or dependency chain, and copying it does not repair Windows’ component store.
Why does Windows say the specified module is missing when the file exists?
The loader may be reporting a missing or incompatible dependency rather than the named DLL itself. That is why architecture checks, application repair, DISM, and SFC are more useful than replacing one file blindly.
