1. Identify the program that is requesting the DLL
First determine whether the error appears when launching Code::Blocks itself or another program.
- Read the title bar and message text carefully.
- Select Start, type
Code::Blocks, and launch the installed shortcut. - If the error appears there, the affected folder is usually the folder containing
codeblocks.exe. - If the error appears when launching a compiled project, locate that project’s executable instead. The project may have been built against the Code::Blocks wxWidgets library and may not be Code::Blocks itself.
- Right-click the shortcut, choose More, then Open file location.
- Right-click the shortcut again, choose Properties, and inspect Target. The executable path tells you which installation or application is failing.
Do not start by searching C:WindowsSystem32. This DLL is normally kept beside codeblocks.exe, or beside the application that was built against that exact runtime.
2. Reinstall the same Code::Blocks build
Use the original official Code::Blocks package for the release that produced the error. For Code::Blocks 13.12, use the archived 13.12 Windows binaries. For a nightly build, use the matching nightly package and its matching prerequisites.
- Close Code::Blocks and any program built with it.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Code::Blocks.
- Select the three-dot menu, choose Uninstall, and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the same release family from its official Code::Blocks distribution.
- If you are restoring a nightly or portable build, unpack the complete matching package, including its prerequisites.
- Launch Code::Blocks from the newly installed folder.
For an old project, reinstalling the newest Code::Blocks release is not always the correct first move. A plugin or compiled application may require the older wxWidgets 2.8 ABI. Code::Blocks’ older releases and nightly packages are the safer source for an older installation.

Restore the companion MinGW runtime files
A Code::Blocks nightly setup can require more than one runtime file. Official Code::Blocks nightly instructions identify mingwm10.dll alongside wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dll.

If the wxWidgets DLL is present but Windows reports that the specified module cannot be found:
- Open the Code::Blocks installation directory.
- Confirm that
wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dllis besidecodeblocks.exe. - Confirm that the matching MinGW runtime files from the same package are also present.
- Do not obtain
mingwm10.dllseparately from a DLL download site. - Replace the entire application directory with the contents of the matching Code::Blocks package if several files are missing.
- Launch the program again.
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of that DLL’s dependencies. Restoring the complete package is more reliable than replacing only the filename shown in the error.

The commonly distributed wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dll is associated with 32-bit Code::Blocks builds. A 32-bit executable cannot use an arbitrary 64-bit wxWidgets library, and a matching filename does not guarantee a matching binary.
Check these points:
- Use the DLL from the same Code::Blocks release or nightly package as the executable.
- Do not replace a GCC/MinGW build with a Visual C++ wxWidgets build.
- Do not use a debug build in place of a release build.
- Do not mix files from different nightly builds.
- Do not rename
wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dllto satisfy an application requesting a custom wxWidgets filename. - Do not rename a different wxWidgets DLL to
wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dll.
Code::Blocks used multiple wxWidgets 2.8-era package builds. A file from one package may not be compatible with an executable or plugin from another. If you cannot identify the exact build, reinstall the complete application package instead of trying individual DLLs.
Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Security software can remove or quarantine a runtime after installation.
Windows Security
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the Code::Blocks installation directory or
wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dll. - Restore the file only if the Code::Blocks installer came from a trusted official distribution.
- Run a scan of the installer and application directory.
- Start Code::Blocks again.
If the file is quarantined repeatedly, do not keep restoring it blindly. Remove the installation, scan the installer, and reinstall from the official package. An exclusion should be used only when permitted by your organization’s security policy and only for a trusted application directory.

Do not install Visual C++ or DirectX expecting this file
wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dll is third-party wxWidgets code packaged for Code::Blocks and compiled for the GCC/MinGW family. It is not supplied by Windows, DirectX, .NET, a device driver, or the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
Installing or repairing the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable can help an application that is missing an MSVC runtime, but it does not provide this Code::Blocks-specific DLL. It is also not a substitute for restoring the matching MinGW runtime files.
Windows Features are not a source for this file either. Enabling legacy components, .NET features, or other optional Windows components will not recreate a missing Code::Blocks runtime.
Repair Windows components only if other Windows files are failing
Because this is an application-local DLL, Windows component repair is a lower-priority step. Use it when other Windows programs or servicing operations are also failing, or when system corruption is suspected.

- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try Code::Blocks again.
Microsoft documents DISM and System File Checker as Windows repair tools. They can repair protected Windows components, but they do not download or rebuild a Code::Blocks-specific DLL. If the commands report no corruption and the application still fails, return to the matching Code::Blocks package rather than repeating them.

Update drivers only for a broader driver-related failure
A graphics, chipset, or storage driver is not the normal source of wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dll. Update drivers only if Code::Blocks fails alongside other applications, Device Manager shows a warning, or the problem began after a system hardware change.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, System devices, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if an update is installed.
If Windows finds no driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page rather than a generic driver repository. A driver update will not normally restore this DLL.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Do not place wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. It is not a protected Windows component, and system-folder copying can make troubleshooting harder or affect unrelated applications.
Application-local deployment is normally correct: place the file beside the executable that requests it, but only when it came from the exact matching application package.
Do not use random DLL download websites
A replacement from an unverified DLL website may contain malware, the wrong architecture, a different compiler build, altered dependencies, or an incomplete package. It may also hide the real problem, such as a quarantined file or a missing mingwm10.dll.
Use the official Code::Blocks release, archived release, or matching nightly package instead. For an application built by someone else, ask the developer for the complete redistributable package that matches its build.
Do not run regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or OLE DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary wxWidgets runtime library is not repaired by registering it.

Running this command against the file can produce another error without restoring any dependency. Reinstall the application package instead.
If the error still appears
Collect these details before escalating:
- The exact error text.
- The full path of the executable that fails.
- Whether the executable is
codeblocks.exe, a plugin, or a compiled project. - The Code::Blocks release or nightly build.
- Whether the application is a portable or “no compiler” package.
- Whether antivirus quarantine shows a deletion.
- Whether
wxmsw28u_gcc_cb.dllexists beside the executable. - Whether the matching MinGW runtime files are present.
- Whether the failure began after manually replacing a DLL.
If the file appears beside the executable but the loader still fails, inspect the complete application package for a missing dependency rather than downloading another copy. If the requesting program is not Code::Blocks, contact that program’s developer for the exact wxWidgets build it expects.
