“deviceregistration.dll is missing from your computer” means Windows or an application cannot load a Windows component. deviceregistration.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows DLL, commonly identified as Device Registration DLL, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX file, game runtime, or ordinary device-driver DLL.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement file. Repair the Windows installation that supplies the component, then investigate the application only if the error continues.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose your starting point:
- The error appears during startup, Windows Update, sign-in, or in several programs: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- It began after an update, rollback, reset, cleanup, or failed upgrade: complete Windows Update troubleshooting, then run the repair commands.
- The file exists but Windows says it is corrupted or “not designed to run on Windows”: check its location, Microsoft signature, and architecture.
- Only one application reports the error: repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
- Your antivirus quarantined the file: review quarantine and scan the computer before restoring anything.
- DISM cannot find source files or SFC cannot repair Windows: use matching installation media, System Restore, or an in-place repair installation.
- The error appears alongside hardware failures: update the relevant driver, but do not assume a driver supplies
deviceregistration.dll.
What deviceregistration.dll is and where it belongs
Microsoft documentation has listed deviceregistration.dll among Windows components, including in Windows 8.1 update documentation. Its usual location is:
%windir%System32deviceregistration.dll
On 64-bit Windows, %windir%System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files. The name is confusing because Windows uses file-system redirection: 32-bit system files are normally found in:

The correct copy is selected by Windows and by the application requesting it. A 32-bit file substituted for a 64-bit file, or the reverse, can cause a bad-image, entry-point, or load error. Historical file records show different versions across Windows builds, so there is no single universal size or version that should be downloaded manually.
This file is related to Windows device-registration functionality, but it is not interchangeable with:
MDMRegistration.dll, which provides Microsoft’s documented device-registration API.dsreg.dll, another part of Windows device-registration infrastructure.- The Device Registration Service associated with Active Directory Federation Services.
Those related names do not prove that an individual missing-DLL error is an Active Directory Federation Services problem.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the correct first repair when the file is missing, damaged, or failing in multiple places.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control appears.
Run these commands separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It can take time and may appear to pause.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands complete.
What success looks like
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found corruption and repaired it. After restarting, repeat the action that produced the error.
If the error disappears, the Windows component store or protected system files were the likely cause.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, continue to the repair-source section below. Do not copy a replacement DLL over the existing file.
Manually hunting through system folders and repeatedly guessing which component changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can show its scan findings and automate parts of the repair process, but its full repair functions are optional and not required; DISM and SFC remain the Microsoft-supported starting point.
Fix 2: Complete Windows Update repair
A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows components inconsistent.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update.
- Select Run.
- Follow the recommendations.
- Return to Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Run the troubleshooter.
- Return to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
Test the affected program again. If the problem began immediately after a particular update, open Settings → Windows Update → Update history and review the recent changes. Removing an update should be considered carefully because it also removes its security and reliability changes.
Fix 3: Give DISM a matching repair source
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If Windows Update is broken, DISM may finish with an error saying that source files could not be found.
Use official Windows installation media or another known-good Windows source that closely matches the installed Windows version and edition. Then run Command Prompt as administrator and adapt this command to the actual source path:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows version closely. Do not use a random ISO, another edition, or a source of uncertain origin.
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test again. If repair still fails, inspect:

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 4: Verify the file’s path, signature, and architecture
Do this if the file exists, if antivirus flagged it, or if Windows reports that it is not designed to run on Windows.
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
text
%windir%System32
- Look for
deviceregistration.dll. - If you use 64-bit Windows, also check:
text
%windir%SysWOW64
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Review the signer and signature status.
A copy in a Windows system directory with a valid Microsoft signature is more trustworthy than one found in a temporary folder, user profile, download directory, or unrelated application folder.
A file outside the normal Windows directories does not automatically prove malware, but it deserves a security scan. Run a full scan with Microsoft Defender or another reputable security product. If the file was quarantined, review the detection and signature before restoring it. Do not disable antivirus to install an unsigned DLL.
Fix 5: Repair the application that reports the error
If only one program displays the message after Windows repair, the program may be damaged, using an incorrect dependency, or requesting a component incorrectly.

- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that the program’s local data is backed up.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or the official store listing.
If the application has a Verify files, Repair installation, or similar option, use it before reinstalling. A single-program error can also mean that one of the application’s own files or dependencies is damaged. Reinstalling Visual C++ or DirectX at random is not the correct first fix for this Windows DLL.
Copying deviceregistration.dll into the application folder may hide the message temporarily, but it can leave the Windows installation damaged and introduce a mismatched architecture or dependency set.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to hardware
deviceregistration.dll is not an ordinary device-driver DLL. Device Manager is therefore not the primary repair for this error.
Use Device Manager only if the same incident includes a hardware problem:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a driver-related failure, use the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official support page when automatic search does not help. Identifying outdated drivers one by one can involve checking many device versions; Outbyte Driver Updater can show its scan results and automate driver installation through its full version, but it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected program.
Do not use Device Manager to replace deviceregistration.dll, and do not enable random Windows Features in the hope that one will supply it.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run:
regsvr32 deviceregistration.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and ActiveX DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows system DLL that does not expose that entry point will produce an error. Registration does not restore a corrupted component store, repair dependencies, or select the correct architecture.
Use DISM and SFC for Windows components instead.

If the problem continues after DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, and application repair, choose the recovery option that matches when the failure began.
System Restore
If System Restore is enabled:
- Press the Windows key.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error.
- Review the affected programs and changes.
- Start the restore.
System Restore can remove recent drivers, applications, and configuration changes. It does not guarantee that every recent change will be preserved.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported.

In-place repair installation
If the feature is unavailable or the installation is more seriously damaged, use official Windows installation media and start the setup from within Windows. Choose the option to keep personal files and applications when it is offered. Back up important files first and read each screen carefully.
A clean installation should be the last resort because it removes applications and can remove personal data if the wrong option is selected.
What each error usually means
- “The program can’t start because deviceregistration.dll is missing from your computer.” Windows cannot locate the required file or an expected dependency.
- “This application failed to start because deviceregistration.dll was not found.” The requesting application could not resolve the component through normal Windows paths.
- “deviceregistration.dll could not be loaded.” The file may be damaged, incompatible, blocked, or dependent on another missing module.
- “The specified module could not be found.” The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing.
- “deviceregistration.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” Common possibilities include corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an invalid replacement.
- “Cannot register deviceregistration.dll.” This usually reflects an inappropriate
regsvr32attempt, not a repair requirement.
FAQ
Should I download deviceregistration.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete dependency set. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, or use official Windows installation media.
Is deviceregistration.dll a driver file?
No. It is a Windows system component associated with device registration. A device driver can be involved in a separate hardware problem, but it does not make this DLL an ordinary driver file.
Is it supplied by Visual C++ Redistributable?
There is no basis to treat this Windows DLL as a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Installing runtimes at random is unlikely to repair a missing or corrupted Windows component.
Is the file always in System32?
%windir%System32 is the normal location for the Windows system copy. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system files are normally handled through %windir%SysWOW64; Windows file-system redirection can make these locations confusing.

What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the exact error, the application name, whether other applications fail, what changed immediately beforehand, the file’s full path, its digital-signature status, and the output from DISM and SFC. That information distinguishes Windows corruption from an application-specific failure.
