What witnesswmiv2provider.dll does
Microsoft identifies this file as the Witness Service WMIv2 Provider. It belongs to the SMB Witness feature, which helps Windows and Windows Server notify SMB clients when a clustered file server fails and when clients should be redirected to another node.
The provider uses the WMI namespace RootMicrosoftWindowsSmbWitness and the registration file SmbWitnessWmiv2Provider.mof. Microsoft lists Windows 8 as the minimum supported client and Windows Server 2012 as the minimum supported server. The component is documented in Microsoft’s MSFT_SmbWitnessClient reference.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, game middleware library, or hardware driver. Installing those packages normally will not restore it.

Fix witnesswmiv2provider.dll errors
Work through these fixes in order. Restart and test after each repair that reports a successful result.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates.
A failed or incomplete Windows servicing operation can remove or damage a protected system file.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
- Try the program that displayed the error again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Windows Update alone does not always repair an already-damaged component store.
2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Time needed: 10–45 minutes.
Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before running System File Checker. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as its source for protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to reach 100 percent and report that the restore operation completed successfully.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the affected program again.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. That is a good result, but the restart is still important because repaired system components may not be loaded until Windows starts again.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions cover both commands and their normal order.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component is damaged can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file and Windows configuration issues, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and supported DISM/SFC remain the direct Microsoft repair path.
If DISM says source files cannot be found
Use a matching Windows installation source instead of copying a DLL from the internet. Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the Windows folder from a repair source that matches your installed edition and build closely enough.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
If SFC still cannot repair the file, inspect:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log
You can also verify this particular protected file without immediately changing it:
sfc /verifyfile=%WINDIR%System32witnesswmiv2provider.dll
Microsoft documents the related /scanfile and /verifyfile options in its sfc command reference.

3. Check the file path and Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5–10 minutes.
On 64-bit Windows, the normal native location is:
%WINDIR%System32witnesswmiv2provider.dll
Do not assume that a file is genuine just because it has the right name.
- Press Windows + E.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
%WINDIR%System32
- Look for
witnesswmiv2provider.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
The Details tab can also show file metadata, but exact version and size values vary by Windows build. Do not use an old third-party file listing as a complete version catalogue.

On 64-bit Windows, %WINDIR%SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Despite its confusing name, SysWOW64 is not the 64-bit folder. Windows uses file-system redirection so 32-bit programs receive the appropriate system components. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Do not swap files between System32 and SysWOW64. A 32-bit process cannot generally load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a substitute.

Time needed: 5–15 minutes.
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system component, although there is no evidence that this is the usual cause for this specific file.
- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
witnesswmiv2provider.dll. - Expand the entry and review its path, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore the file unless you have confirmed that it is the Microsoft-signed copy in the Windows system directory and the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device again. Its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
If Defender or another antivirus repeatedly removes the file, update the security product and run a full scan. Then repair Windows with DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly restoring the same quarantined copy.
5. Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes.
A Windows component can be healthy even when one application incorrectly requests it, bundles a damaged copy, or launches with a broken manifest.
First identify the executable producing the message. Note the program name, installation folder, and whether the error appears during launch, uninstall, or an update.
If only one program is affected:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
- For desktop software without those options, uninstall it from Installed apps.
- Download the installer only from the software publisher’s official source.
- Reinstall the program and test it again.
For a game, use its launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity feature before reinstalling the entire game. There is no verified evidence that a particular game routinely requires this Windows provider.
If the program is requesting witnesswmiv2provider.dll from its own folder, a temporary directory, or a download location, treat that as suspicious or as an installer defect. The normal Windows copy belongs under the Windows system directory.
6. Check architecture and related device issues
Time needed: 10–20 minutes.
Architecture problems can produce messages such as:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

witnesswmiv2provider.dll is not designed to run on Windows.
These can indicate corruption, an incompatible binary, or an incorrect 32-bit/64-bit combination. They do not prove that the official Windows component is obsolete.
Do not install a 32-bit DLL into System32, or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64. Let Windows repair the correct copy through updates, DISM, and SFC.
Drivers are normally unrelated to this provider. Only investigate them if the error began alongside a device, storage, network, or chipset problem.

7. Do not start with regsvr32
Time needed: Usually unnecessary.
regsvr32 is a registration utility, not a general missing-DLL repair command. It works only with DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points and does not restore a deleted or corrupted file.
Some metadata indicates that this provider may expose DllRegisterServer, so registration could be relevant to a narrowly diagnosed WMI or COM registration failure when the correct signed file already exists. It should not be used merely because Windows says the file is missing.
Microsoft describes regsvr32 as a registration tool, while its WMI provider registration documentation explains why provider registration involves more than blindly running a command.
8. Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20–60 minutes.
System Restore is appropriate when the error appeared immediately after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and updates.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back monitored system files, settings, and registry state. It is not a substitute for a full backup and does not guarantee recovery from every servicing problem. Microsoft explains its behavior in Restoring the system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the error happens
| Likely cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Windows component corruption | Windows Update, then DISM followed by SFC |
| Failed update or servicing operation | DISM and SFC, possibly with a matching repair source |
| Defender quarantine | Confirm the path and signature, then address the detection safely |
| Wrong architecture or invalid binary | Restore the correct Windows copy through supported repair |
| Broken WMI or COM registration | Repair Windows first; investigate registration only when the file exists |
| Malware or counterfeit file | Scan the system and remove untrusted copies |
| One program’s bad installer | Repair or reinstall that program from its official source |
The most important distinction is whether the message appears across Windows or only when one application starts. A system-wide problem points toward Windows servicing or security software. A single-program problem may indicate that the application is incorrectly packaging or requesting a Windows component.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download witnesswmiv2provider.dll from a DLL repository and copy it into System32. An unofficial file can have the wrong build, architecture, language resources, or malicious modifications, and replacing the file may hide the real servicing problem.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft installation media, and the official installer for the affected application. Those sources can restore the component in the context of the installed Windows build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFAQ
Is witnesswmiv2provider.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows system DLL. A copy with that name in a user profile, temporary folder, downloads directory, or unrelated application directory deserves investigation. Verify the path and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename.
Is it safe to install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Those packages are normally irrelevant. witnesswmiv2provider.dll is the SMB Witness WMIv2 Provider, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Windows builds, architectures, servicing states, and component registrations can differ. Repair the installed Windows image instead.
Can I fix this with regsvr32?
Not as a general repair. Registration is only potentially relevant when the correct file exists and the problem has been specifically narrowed to WMI or COM registration.

What should I collect if the error continues?
Record the Windows edition and build, exact error text, executable producing it, full path of any copy found, SFC result, DISM result, and relevant Windows Security Protection History entry. This information distinguishes a damaged Windows component from a faulty application installer or suspicious file.
