Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutecnhw11a.dll is a Canon WIA scanner-driver component, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows says cnhw11a.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to reinstall the complete Canon scanner package for the exact scanner or multifunction-printer model.
The filename is associated with Canon’s WIA Scanner Driver software. Public file metadata reports a 32-bit DLL, version 1.0.0.0, and a size of approximately 0.15 MB, but those details are third-party-reported rather than Canon-verified. The exact Canon model and package that installed the file are not publicly established.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Canon scanner package
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution because a complete Canon installation restores more than the DLL. It also restores device registration, WIA integration, supporting files, and the connection between the scanner and the application that uses it.
- Find the exact model printed on the scanner or multifunction printer.
- Open Canon’s official Software and Drivers support page.
- Select Scanners or Printers, depending on the device.
- Search for the exact model number.
- Select your Windows edition and system architecture when prompted.
- Download the complete scanner driver or scanning software package. Do not download an individual DLL.
- If the installer instructs you to disconnect the scanner, unplug its USB cable or disconnect it from the network.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Reconnect or power on the scanner.
- Open the Canon scanning application and test a scan.
If the scan works, the missing component and its device configuration have been restored. If the installer reports that the software is already installed, continue with the next fix instead of copying a replacement DLL into a Windows folder.

- Space saving design: Upright, with top feed and top eject, and a built-in cable organization system
- Reliably handles many different document types: Receipts, photos, business cards, plastic or embossed cards, reports, contracts, long documents, thick or thin documents, and more
- Fast and efficient: Scans both sides of a document at the same time, in color, at up to 25 pages-per-minute, with a 30 sheet automatic feeder, and one-touch operation
- Broad compatibility: Supports Windows and Mac; TWAIN driver also included
Before removing an existing Canon package, record the scanner model and the application that displayed the error. You may need that information if the installer offers several similarly named packages.
When manually checking several driver packages, it is easy to choose the wrong model or architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify driver updates; its free scan shows what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is done by the full version. Reinstalling the exact Canon package remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 2: Remove the damaged Canon device entry and reinstall
Time needed: 10–15 minutes
Use this branch when Canon’s installer completed but the scanner still produces the same error.
- Disconnect the scanner if it is connected by USB.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or another category containing the scanner.
- Right-click the Canon device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you intend to reinstall the Canon package immediately.
- Select Uninstall.
- In Device Manager, select View > Show hidden devices.
- Remove an old, greyed-out Canon scanner entry if it clearly refers to the same device and is no longer used.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific Canon scanner package again using the procedure above.
- Reconnect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
Open Device Manager again after the restart. The scanner should appear without a yellow warning icon. Test it in both the Canon application and, if available, the Windows Scan application.
If Windows detects the scanner but the Canon application still fails, the application itself may be damaged. Repair or reinstall that Canon application after reinstalling the driver.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a driver component after a detection or an update. Do not restore the file automatically. A same-named DLL can be malicious, damaged, unsigned, or from an unrelated package.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cnhw11a.dll, Canon software, or the scanner driver. - Open the event and review its location and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it came from the expected Canon installation directory, has a trustworthy Canon signature, and the detection is clearly a false positive.
- If you cannot verify its origin, leave it quarantined.
- Reinstall the complete Canon package from Canon’s official support portal instead.
- Run a Windows Security scan after reinstalling.
A restored file may not be enough if related driver files or WIA configuration were removed. Reinstalling the complete package is safer than rebuilding the installation around a quarantined DLL.
Fix 4: Confirm the Windows architecture and package
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The reported cnhw11a.dll metadata describes a 32-bit Windows DLL. That does not prove that every Canon package containing the filename is identical, and it does not mean that you should install a random 32-bit file manually.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit scanner applications through its compatibility layer. Problems occur when the application, driver package, and supporting components are incomplete or incompatible.

To check your system:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Find System type under Device specifications.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Return to Canon’s support page.
- Select the exact Windows version and architecture offered for your model.
- Install that package rather than one intended for another Canon device.
If you use a 32-bit Canon application on 64-bit Windows, do not move the DLL between System32, SysWOW64, the application folder, and a Canon folder. Those folders have different purposes, and placing a file in the wrong location can create a second compatibility problem.
If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” treat that as a possible corruption, architecture, or dependency problem. Reinstall the complete driver package and inspect the installed file’s properties rather than replacing it from an unofficial source.
Fix 5: Install Windows updates and check the driver again
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A Windows update or driver change can expose an incomplete scanner installation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not require an immediate restart.
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the Canon scanner.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- If Roll Back Driver is available and the problem began immediately after a driver update, select it and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test scanning.
If rollback is unavailable or does not help, reinstall the current model-specific Canon package. Microsoft recommends matching downloaded drivers to the Windows version and system architecture rather than relying on an unrelated driver.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use these commands when Windows itself may have damaged component files or when several unrelated applications are failing. They repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not guarantee the recreation of a deleted Canon third-party DLL.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon scanner package.
- Test the scanner again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The commands are documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows components changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows repair issues; its free scan shows what is wrong, while the repair is done by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon driver that owns cnhw11a.dll.

Fix 7: Check the Windows Image Acquisition service
Time needed: 5 minutes
WIA means Windows Image Acquisition. It is Microsoft’s imaging framework for scanners and other imaging devices. A WIA service problem can prevent scanning, but it does not prove that cnhw11a.dll itself is missing.

- If Startup type is set to Disabled, change it to Automatic or Manual.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- If it is running, select Restart.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the scanner in Windows Scan and the Canon application.
If Windows Scan and the Canon application both fail to detect the device, investigate the USB cable, network connection, device power, permissions, and Canon driver installation. If Windows Scan works but only the Canon application fails, repair or reinstall that application.
Do not use regsvr32 as the first fix
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A scanner driver component may not support self-registration. Running a command such as:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
regsvr32 cnhw11a.dll
can produce an error without repairing the driver, its dependencies, device registration, or WIA configuration.
Use regsvr32 only when Canon’s documentation or the installer specifically instructs you to register that particular file. Otherwise, reinstall the complete driver package.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
| Cause | What usually fixes it |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or damaged Canon installation | Reinstall the complete package for the exact model |
| Wrong model, Windows version, or architecture | Download the matching Canon package |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify the file or reinstall from Canon |
| Windows or driver update conflict | Install updates or roll back the affected driver |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC, then reinstall Canon software |
| Broken WIA or device configuration | Restart WIA and rebuild the device installation |

Avoid standalone DLL downloads
Do not download cnhw11a.dll from a random DLL directory or copy a file supplied by another user. That file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, lack required dependencies, use an incompatible version, or fail to restore Canon’s device configuration.
The safe source is Canon’s official support portal, using the exact scanner or multifunction-printer model. Microsoft’s supported driver path is Device Manager, followed by the manufacturer’s driver package. A standalone DLL is not a complete scanner installation.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET merely because this error mentions a DLL. There is no evidence that cnhw11a.dll is one of those Microsoft runtime files.

If the error continues
Inspect the exact path shown in the error and the file’s Properties dialog. Check whether the file has a valid Canon signature and whether it is located inside the expected Canon installation. Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the failing application and its module name.
If the DLL exists but will not load, the issue may be a damaged dependency or incompatible binary rather than a missing file. If Canon’s installer repeatedly fails, remove the stale Canon scanning software and device entry, restart Windows, and install the package again.

You can also test with a new Windows user profile to determine whether the failure is limited to one user’s application settings. If the scanner worked before a recent installation or update, System Restore may revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally removing personal files. It is a later recovery step because it can also undo recent security and application changes.
FAQ
Is cnhw11a.dll part of Windows?
No authoritative evidence shows that it ships with Windows. It is associated with Canon’s WIA Scanner Driver software and should be restored through the Canon device package.
Which Canon scanner uses this DLL?
The exact Canon scanner or multifunction-printer model has not been publicly verified. Identify the model from the device label and use Canon’s matching support package.
Is cnhw11a.dll a Microsoft WIA file?
No. WIA is Microsoft’s scanner framework, while cnhw11a.dll is a Canon driver component that works within that framework.
Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Copying a DLL into either folder can create an architecture mismatch and does not restore the Canon driver configuration. Reinstall the complete package.
Will SFC or DISM restore it?
Not necessarily. SFC and DISM repair Windows components and protected system files. They are not guaranteed to recreate a removed Canon third-party DLL.
What if Windows Scan works but Canon’s application does not?
The scanner and WIA path may be working, while the Canon application is damaged or misconfigured. Repair or reinstall the Canon application and test again.
When should I contact Canon?
Contact Canon when the exact model-specific package fails repeatedly, the device is not detected after reinstalling, or the error persists with the full message and Windows build available.
