Manual Download does not necessarily mean manual installation. Nexus Mods gives you an archive; you can either extract and copy its files yourself, or import that archive into Vortex or Mod Organizer 2. For a single, clearly documented mod, copying files can work. For a large mod list, a manager is usually safer because it tracks files, conflicts, activation, and removal.
The correct destination is not universal. It depends on the game, edition, version, archive structure, and required framework. This guide explains how to identify the right folder, install files without creating an extra layer of nesting, activate dependencies, use a manually downloaded archive with Vortex or MO2, and recover when something goes wrong.
What “manual installation” means
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different actions:
- Manual Download: Your browser downloads the mod archive, usually as a
.zip,.7z, or.rarfile. - Manual installation: You inspect, extract, and copy the archive’s files into the destination specified by the author.
- Install from file: You download the archive yourself, then import it into Vortex or Mod Organizer 2.
- Manual load-order management: You arrange plugins or mod priorities yourself. This is separate from copying files.
- Manual framework installation: You install a script extender or loader, such as SKSE, F4SE, BepInEx, SMAPI, or MelonLoader, often beside the game executable.
A manually downloaded archive can therefore still be installed through a mod manager. Nexus documentation distinguishes importing a downloaded file from downloading directly through a manager: Nexus’s download guide.

Also, a mod manager is not automatically a loader. Nexus explains that managers and frameworks such as SMAPI, BepInEx, UE4SS, and MelonLoader perform different jobs: Nexus’s installation documentation.
Before you install
Prepare these items first:
- A legitimate, installed Windows PC copy of the game, unless the game’s documentation explicitly supports another platform.
- The exact game edition and executable version supported by the mod.
- An archive utility capable of opening the downloaded format. 7-Zip is a common free option.
- Enough disk space for the archive, extracted files, temporary files, backups, and possible recovery copies.
- A backup of your saves and important configuration files.
- The mod’s required dependencies, frameworks, patches, and DLC.
- The original archive and the mod-page URL, retained until the installation has been tested.
Do not assume that the newest mod file supports the newest game executable, or that a mod for Skyrim Special Edition supports Skyrim Legendary Edition, Skyrim VR, or another Bethesda release. Check the mod page’s game, version, requirements, compatibility notes, and bug reports.
For large downloads, Nexus documents resumable downloads for free users downloading files over 500 MB in supported browsers. Support varies by browser, with Chromium-based browsers offering the best support and Firefox support being limited. Recovery may temporarily require approximately twice the partial file’s size in free disk space: Nexus’s resumable-download information.
Find the game’s installation folder
You need the folder containing the game’s executable, but the final mod destination may be a subfolder inside it. Never assume that every game uses a Bethesda-style Data folder.

Steam
A common Steam path is:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon<Game Name>Your Steam library may be on another drive or in a custom folder. The reliable method is to open Steam, right-click the game, choose Manage or Properties, and select the option that opens the game’s local files. Steam’s wording can change, so use the option that opens the installation directory.
Other launchers
Epic Games Store, GOG, Microsoft Store, and custom installations use different locations. Locate the directory containing the game’s executable rather than guessing from a standard path. Some Microsoft Store installations also restrict direct access, making the game’s own modding documentation especially important.
If you are configuring Vortex, select the game’s top-level directory containing the relevant game structure—not an overly deep folder that contains only the executable. Vortex’s general setup guidance is available in its getting-started documentation.
Download a Nexus mod manually
- Open the mod’s page and select the Files section.
- Choose the file that matches your game version and intended setup.
- Distinguish among main files, updates, optional files, patches, translations, old files, and performance or texture variants.
- Read the requirements and installation instructions before downloading.
- Choose Manual Download, then wait for the browser to finish.
- Keep the completed archive in a known location.
The first file listed is not necessarily the correct file. An update may require a particular main file; a patch may require two other mods; and a “loose files” download may have a different installation procedure from a guided installer.

Nexus displays file-scan information and recommends ordinary archive formats such as ZIP and 7z. Treat unexpected executables, scripts, password-protected archives, and nested archives cautiously. Do not run an unfamiliar executable just because it is inside a mod archive. If an installer is legitimate, the author should explain its purpose and use.

Inspect the archive before extracting it
Extract the archive to a temporary location such as:
C:ModdingExtracted<Mod Name>Avoid inspecting files directly inside C:Program Files. Windows permissions and virtualization can make it harder to determine what was actually copied.

The folder-nesting problem
Do not blindly copy the first folder you see. The outer folder may only be packaging.
Suppose the extracted archive looks like this:
ModName
Data
meshes
textures
SomeMod.espIf the author says the archive’s Data folder belongs in the game root, the result should be:
<Game Folder>Datameshes
<Game Folder>Datatextures
<Game Folder>DataSomeMod.espDo not create this unintended path:
<Game Folder>ModNameData...On the other hand, if the archive directly contains Data, you may need to copy that folder into the game root. If it contains BepInEx, Mods, or Content, those folders may also need to sit directly under the game’s root—or under a game-specific subdirectory. The mod page, not Nexus itself, determines the correct destination.
Install a mod by copying its files
- Read the mod page again. Record the required game edition, version, dependencies, installation order, post-install configuration, and whether a new save is recommended.
- Extract to a temporary folder. Do not use the game directory as your inspection area.
- Identify the archive’s intended root. Determine whether the author expects the game root,
Data,Mods,BepInEx,ContentPaks, or another location. - Copy the contents to the documented destination. Copying the contents is not always the same as copying the outer folder.
- Merge folders carefully. Windows may ask whether to merge folders or replace files. Do not overwrite files blindly if you do not know which mod owns them.
- Install dependencies separately. A mod can be physically present and still do nothing without its loader, plugin, address library, DLC, or required base mod.
- Complete activation steps. Enable plugins, run the required launcher, choose FOMOD options, or edit configuration files as instructed.
- Test before installing another mod.
Common archive layouts
Bethesda-style files:

Unreal Engine PAK files:
<Game Folder>GameNameContentPaksThe exact Unreal path varies by game. Do not use this example unless the mod page specifies it.
SMAPI mods: SMAPI uses the game’s established mod directory convention. Do not copy every SMAPI archive into the game root. Install SMAPI separately, then follow the individual mod’s instructions.
Install dependencies, loaders, and script extenders
Check the requirements list for:
- A required base mod or shared library
- A script extender such as SKSE or F4SE
- A framework such as BepInEx, SMAPI, UE4SS, or MelonLoader
- An address library or runtime-specific file
- A DLL loader
- A compatibility patch
- Required DLC
- A particular game executable version
- A required configuration tool or mod-manager option
Obtain framework files from the official project page or the exact source linked by the mod author, not from random reuploads. Root-level framework files often belong beside the game executable, while ordinary assets may belong in a subfolder. The required launcher may also differ from the game’s normal shortcut.
Installing the mod manager does not install the script extender. Similarly, installing a script extender does not automatically install every mod that uses it.
Activate and test the mod
Installation and activation are separate. Depending on the game, you may need to:
- Enable a plugin in the game launcher or manager.
- Enable or arrange a plugin in a plugin list.
- Launch through a script-extender executable.
- Run the game through SMAPI, BepInEx, or another loader.
- Edit an
.inifile. - Complete a FOMOD installer.
- Generate configuration files on first launch.
- Start a new game or load a save made before the mod was installed.
Test incrementally:
- Confirm the game launches.
- Check for the expected menu, item, visual change, location, or behavior.
- Look for missing-dependency or loader errors.
- Confirm that existing saves remain usable.
- Close and reopen the game to ensure the setup is persistent.
Install a manually downloaded archive with Vortex
Vortex is the current Nexus-supported manager direction; the separate Nexus Mods app is no longer under active development. See Nexus’s discontinuation FAQ for the current status.
To import a browser-downloaded archive:
- Download the file with Manual Download.
- Open Vortex and select the correct game.
- Open the Mods page.
- Drag the archive into the Drop File(s) area, or use Vortex’s file-install option.
- Wait for Vortex to inspect the archive.
- Install and enable the mod.
- Deploy mods when Vortex requests it.
- Resolve dependency and conflict notifications.
- Launch through the required game or script-extender launcher.
Vortex’s deployment process places or links managed files into the game’s mod location. Its deployment methods are explained in the Vortex deployment documentation. Do not change deployment methods casually; Vortex automatically selects an appropriate method and recommends changing it only for a specific reason.
Deploy makes managed files active. Purge removes Vortex-managed deployed files or links without necessarily deleting the mod list. Keep the original archive until the installation is confirmed; an imported manually downloaded archive may not be stored in Vortex’s normal download directory unless the relevant setting is enabled.

Vortex’s visual mod list is not a simple top-to-bottom file-overwrite list. Conflict rules and deployment determine which files win. Its documentation also explains that mod-list order does not represent file-conflict processing order: Vortex conflict guidance.
Install a manually downloaded archive with Mod Organizer 2
Mod Organizer 2 is especially useful for Bethesda games and experimental setups because ordinary mod files are kept separate from the game’s Data directory through a virtual file system. It is not a universal solution: root-level files, external tools, frameworks, and game support still vary.
- Download the archive manually.
- Open MO2.
- Drag the archive into the Downloads panel, or use its archive-install control.
- Double-click the archive entry.
- Follow any FOMOD installer prompts.
- Enable the resulting mod in the left-side mod list.
- Enable and arrange plugins in the right-side plugin list.
- Launch the game through the appropriate MO2 executable.
In MO2, the left panel controls mod priority and loose-file conflicts. The right panel controls plugin order. A mod can be enabled yet lose a file conflict to another mod. MO2’s project page is at GitHub; additional installation and virtualization guidance is available through MO2 documentation on Nexus.
Manual copy, Vortex, or MO2?

The practical rule is simple: use manual downloading when necessary, but manage the archive through Vortex or MO2 when the game and mod support it. Copy directly into the game folder only when the mod’s instructions specifically require it.
Load order and file conflicts are different
“Load order” can refer to several separate systems:
- Plugin order: The sequence of
.esp,.esm,.esl, or comparable plugin files. - Mod priority: Which mod’s loose files overwrite another mod’s files.
- Deployment order: How a manager places or links files.
- Script execution order: A separate behavior controlled by the game or framework.
MO2 exposes mod priority on the left and plugin order on the right. Vortex uses conflict rules and deployment rather than treating its visible mod list as a simple overwrite sequence. LOOT can help sort supported plugin lists, but automatic sorting cannot make incompatible mods compatible or resolve every conflict.
Troubleshooting
The mod does not appear in-game
Check for:
- The wrong game edition or executable version.
- Files nested one folder too deeply.
- A missing framework, plugin, DLC, or base mod.
- A plugin that is installed but disabled.
- The wrong launcher or executable.
- A mod designed for a different loader.
- Installation into a different game instance.
- A mod that affects only a new game, a particular location, or a specific trigger.
Compare the archive’s internal structure with the final installed path, then confirm the required launcher and version. Check framework logs when available.
The game crashes on startup
- Disable or remove the newest mod.
- Test the game.
- If it works, recheck that mod’s requirements, runtime, and installation path.
- If it still fails, disable the newest dependency or framework.
- Restore your backup or verify game files if the installation was substantially altered.
- Add mods back one at a time.
Common causes include a missing master, incompatible DLL, incorrect script-extender version, duplicate files, bad plugin order, misplaced root files, or a conflict. Do not delete the entire game folder as the first response.

The archive contains an installer
It may be a FOMOD, executable installer, batch script, or framework-specific setup utility. Use it only when the author explicitly documents it. Never disable antivirus protection indiscriminately or bypass a security warning simply to force an installation.
The download is incomplete or corrupt
Confirm that the browser finished downloading, compare the file size if the author provides one, check available disk space, and try opening the archive before extracting it. A resumable download may still have temporary files occupying space. Re-download from the mod’s page if the archive fails its integrity check.
The mod cannot be uninstalled cleanly
Manual copying is difficult to reverse when a mod overwrote vanilla files, shares filenames with other mods, or was copied into several directories. Use the archive’s file list and remove only files you can positively identify. When uncertain, restore a pre-modding backup or verify the game installation. Keep a simple manifest containing the mod name, version, date, destination, and files for future manual installs.
An update leaves stale files
Replacing files does not necessarily remove files that were renamed or deleted in the new version. Follow the author’s update instructions and keep the previous archive until the new version has been tested. A clean reinstall may be safer than copying the update over the old files.

How to uninstall a manually installed mod
- Close the game and its launcher or loader.
- Read the mod’s uninstall instructions.
- Use the original archive’s file list to identify installed files.
- Remove only files known to belong to that mod.
- Restore backed-up configuration files if the mod changed them.
- Verify the game files or restore a clean backup if shared or overwritten files make removal uncertain.
Do not remove a shared dependency merely because one mod used it. For future installations, a manager provides a safer record of ownership and makes disabling and removal more predictable.
Security and account practices
- Download from the mod page or a source explicitly linked by the author.
- Check Nexus’s scan indicator.
- Be cautious with unexpected executables, scripts, password-protected archives, and nested archives.
- Do not disable antivirus protection just to install a mod.
- Keep the archive, version number, and mod-page URL.
- Use comments and bug reports to spot current compatibility problems, but treat them as user reports rather than authoritative instructions.

It becomes risky when you cannot identify file ownership, dependencies, destination folders, or rollback steps. For anything beyond a small, clearly documented setup, import the manually downloaded archive into Vortex or MO2 and keep the installation reproducible.
