atidxx64.dll is a genuine AMD Radeon graphics-driver component. If Windows says it is missing, cannot load it, or crashes while naming it, repair the AMD driver package rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is identified as the Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Radeon DirectX 11 Driver. “DirectX 11” is part of the driver’s product description; it does not mean that reinstalling the DirectX runtime will normally restore this file.
Identify the file before repairing it

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, despite its name. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files through Windows’ compatibility system. Microsoft explains this file-system redirection in its WOW64 documentation.
Do not move atidxx64.dll into SysWOW64, and do not substitute it for atidxx32.dll. A 32-bit application may need the 32-bit driver component supplied by the complete AMD package.

The file may also appear under a path such as:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
An AMD installer may additionally extract files into a temporary or working folder. The exact folder and version vary by GPU, Windows release, AMD driver branch, and computer manufacturer.
What the error message tells you
“atidxx64.dll is missing” or “was not found”
This usually means the application cannot access the AMD driver component it expects. Possible causes include an incomplete driver installation, antivirus quarantine, a failed update, or a damaged driver package.
If only one game or application shows the message, its own installation may also be incomplete.
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”
This is commonly called a bad-image error. It can indicate a damaged or incompatible copy, but it does not prove that the DLL alone is defective. Replacing one file can leave the rest of the AMD driver package mismatched.

A faulting-module entry or an access violation such as 0xc0000005 means the module was involved when the process failed. It does not prove that atidxx64.dll caused the failure.
Check whether the crash began after an AMD driver update, Windows update, game patch, graphics setting change, GPU overclock, antivirus action, or disk problem.
An anti-cheat warning calls the file untrusted
Do not immediately allow or replace it. Check the full path and Windows Security’s Protection history first. An unexpected path, missing signature, or quarantine event requires a clean driver installation rather than a copied DLL.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the AMD graphics driver
This is the best first repair when several games or 3D applications fail, when the file is absent from the driver installation, or when the problem began after a graphics-driver change.

First, check the installed GPU
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the exact AMD Radeon or FirePro model.
- Double-click the adapter and open the Driver tab.
- Record the Driver Version, Driver Date, and Provider.
If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the AMD driver is missing or not active.
For a laptop or an OEM desktop, use the computer manufacturer’s validated graphics package when the AMD generic installer causes instability. For a standard desktop graphics card, use AMD’s official driver selector and choose the package for the exact GPU. Do not select a package based only on the DLL’s filename or an online version listing.
If the failure began immediately after an update, try the previous driver branch supported by the GPU. Older Radeon products may require a final legacy package rather than the newest current release.
Try a normal reinstall
- Close games, launchers, screen recorders, and overlay applications.
- Download the correct AMD graphics package from AMD or the computer manufacturer.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Choose the clean-install or factory-reset option if the installer provides it.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows.
- Reopen Device Manager and confirm that the AMD adapter is listed without a warning icon.
- Start the affected application.
A successful repair normally restores the complete driver stack, not just atidxx64.dll. Test more than one 3D application if possible.

Use AMD Cleanup Utility when reinstalling fails
Use this step if the installer repeatedly fails, several driver versions have been installed over one another, or crashes continue after a normal reinstall.
- Save your work and close all applications.
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s official support site.
- Run
amdcleanuputility.exe. - Allow it to restart Windows in Safe Mode when prompted. Safe Mode is preferred because fewer driver components are active.
- Confirm the cleanup and wait for it to finish.
- Restart Windows normally.
- Install the correct AMD or OEM graphics package.
- Restart again before testing the game.
Do not interrupt the cleanup process. The display may temporarily use a basic driver, show a low resolution, or flicker during removal and installation.
Fix 2: Verify the affected game or application
If only one program fails while other 3D applications work, verify its files before changing Windows components.

Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then restart Steam and test the game.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Relaunch the game after verification completes.
A verification repair can replace incomplete application files, but it will not normally repair a damaged AMD driver. If several games fail, return to the driver repair steps.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a driver component after an update or a false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review events mentioning
atidxx64.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, and action taken.
- If the file came from a properly installed AMD or OEM driver and its signature and path are trustworthy, follow your security product’s restore or allow process.
- Reinstall the AMD driver instead if the path is unusual, the signature is missing, or the detection indicates malware.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance warns that restoring a quarantined threat can cause it to be detected again. Do not restore a file merely because a game requires it.
Fix 4: Install Windows updates, then repair Windows components
Windows Update can deliver display-driver packages and system servicing changes. It does not turn atidxx64.dll into a Microsoft DirectX or core Windows file.

Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
Run DISM and SFC
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. They may not replace a third-party AMD driver DLL, so repeat the AMD driver installation if the file remains missing.

Fix 5: Check the disk for file-system errors
If the failure followed a forced shutdown, disk warning, or repeated file corruption, scan the Windows volume.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
chkdsk C: /scan
The scan reports file-system problems without immediately scheduling an offline repair. Use /f only when repair is necessary and you understand that Windows may schedule the operation for the next restart:
chkdsk C: /f
If the disk reports errors, back up important files before continuing. Storage problems can corrupt a newly installed driver again.
Fix 6: Roll back with System Restore
Use System Restore when the problem began after a driver, Windows, or application change and a suitable restore point exists.

- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back drivers, system files, settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal files. Microsoft provides additional details in its System Restore documentation.

Do not download a single DLL
Random DLL download archives may provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible driver build, or a file with no trustworthy signature. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match the other AMD binaries, services, registry configuration, and driver package files.

Do not use regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 atidxx64.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs. A graphics-driver component normally does not provide the DllRegisterServer entry point that this command expects. Microsoft explains these limitations in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guide.
Do not reinstall DirectX or Visual C++ automatically
The DirectX End-User Runtime is relevant when the error names legacy files such as d3dx9_43.dll, XInput, or XAudio. Visual C++ Redistributables apply when the message names files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.
Neither package is the normal repair for atidxx64.dll. Do not enable random Windows Features in an attempt to restore it. Windows Features can add optional operating-system components, but they do not reconstruct an AMD display-driver package.
If the crash continues
After a clean driver installation, test with stock GPU and CPU settings. Temporarily disable overlays, injectors, recording tools, and tuning utilities. Then check whether every Direct3D application fails or only one title.
If multiple applications still crash, investigate overheating, unstable overclocking, defective GPU or VRAM, faulty RAM, power delivery, storage errors, and driver compatibility. Collect these details before contacting the GPU or computer manufacturer:

A crash naming atidxx64.dll is evidence for investigating the AMD graphics path, not proof that the file itself is the sole fault.
FAQ
Is atidxx64.dll a DirectX file?
No. Its product name references the Radeon DirectX 11 Driver, but the file belongs to the AMD graphics-driver package. Reinstalling the DirectX End-User Runtime normally will not restore it.
Should I copy atidxx64.dll from another computer?
No. The other computer may use a different GPU, driver branch, Windows build, or architecture. Install the complete matching AMD or OEM driver package.
Is atidxx64.dll the same as atidxx32.dll?
No. atidxx64.dll is the 64-bit component. atidxx32.dll is intended for 32-bit software and must come from the appropriate driver package.
Will SFC fix the missing file?
Usually not by itself. SFC and DISM repair Windows components and protected system files. They are supporting steps; an AMD driver reinstall is the primary repair for this file.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributables?
Only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime file. Installing them is not a substitute for repairing the AMD driver.
What if Windows Update keeps reinstalling the problematic driver?
Install the validated driver from the computer manufacturer or AMD after cleaning the old package. If the issue began with a new driver, test the previous supported package and keep Windows fully updated before retesting.
