If Windows shows “The program can’t start because wiascanprofiles.dll is missing from your computer,” the problem is usually a damaged Windows imaging component, not a missing game DLL. The same applies to “wiascanprofiles.dll was not found,” “Error loading wiascanprofiles.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.”
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the shortest route:
- Every scanning application fails: repair Windows first with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- The error started immediately after Windows Update: install pending updates, then use Windows 11’s repair-reinstall option if it is available.
- Only one scanner application fails: repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.
- The scanner disappeared from Windows or WIA errors appear: reinstall the scanner or printer’s official driver.
- Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: try System Restore, then an in-place Windows repair.
Do not begin by downloading wiascanprofiles.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded file can contain malware, target the wrong Windows architecture, or match a different servicing build while leaving the underlying Windows corruption untouched.
What wiascanprofiles.dll actually is
wiascanprofiles.dll is associated with Microsoft Windows ScanProfiles and the Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, platform. WIA is the Windows imaging architecture used by scanner and camera applications. Its scan-profile APIs manage XML-based profiles that describe how imaging devices should operate. Microsoft documents WIA and scan profiles in its WIA overview and scan profile documentation.
This is a Windows component rather than a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file. There is no Microsoft redistributable package that you should install separately for it.

On a 64-bit Windows installation, the normal locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit components. The folder name is confusing, but the application architecture determines which copy Windows loads. Do not copy a file between these folders manually.
The file’s presence alone does not prove it is healthy. If you inspect it, right-click the file, choose Properties, and check the Digital Signatures tab for a valid Microsoft signature. Local verification is more useful than relying on an old online version table because Windows file versions vary by build, architecture, language, and servicing state.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair system files
This is the best first fix when the file is missing, corrupt, or every scanner-related application fails.

On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not insist on it.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Choose Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
After restarting, test the application again. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM and SFC in the correct order
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It can appear to pause for a while.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC completes.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files SFC uses. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft describes this sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
A successful result is a message saying that SFC found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Launch the affected application and test scanning afterward.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run DISM once more, followed by SFC. Do not download replacement DLLs while the component store is still damaged.

Fix 2: Repair Windows after a failed update
If wiascanprofiles.dll failed immediately after an update, the servicing state may be incomplete rather than the scanner software itself being broken.
On supported Windows 11 versions, check for the built-in repair reinstall:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Keep the PC connected to power and follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, personal files, and settings. Microsoft explains this option on its Windows repair-reinstall page.

Fix 3: Check the WIA service and scanner driver
A damaged scanner driver can cause WIA applications to fail even when wiascanprofiles.dll itself is present.
Check the Windows Image Acquisition service
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Automatic (Delayed Start) if the existing configuration was changed.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If the service refuses to start, note the exact error. That points toward broader Windows or driver damage rather than a simple application problem.

Reinstall the scanner or printer
First disconnect the scanner or turn off the multifunction printer. Then:
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected scanner or printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and follow the detection steps.
If Windows does not find it, download the current driver and scanning software from the scanner manufacturer’s official support page. Choose the package for your exact model and Windows architecture. Avoid driver aggregators and generic DLL packages.
Device Manager can also expose a driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers.
- Right-click the scanner.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the manufacturer’s official driver.
If only one scanning application fails while Windows Scan or another WIA application works, the driver is less likely to be the root cause. Repair that application instead.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the failing application
If the error appears only when starting one program, that program may have damaged configuration, a broken private dependency, or an incomplete update.

For a Microsoft Store application:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer offers.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the application from its official installer.
Do not assume the application needs its own copy of wiascanprofiles.dll. A properly installed Windows component should normally be supplied by Windows. Reinstalling the application is definitive only when that application itself is damaged.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after a false positive or after detecting tampering.
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the relevant detection.
- Check the file path and detection details.
Restore the file only if you have confirmed that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed file and the detection is a false positive. If the path points to a temporary folder, an application folder, or an unknown location, do not restore it automatically. Run a full scan and repair Windows instead. Microsoft documents these actions in its Protection History guidance.

Windows may report that wiascanprofiles.dll could not be loaded even when the file exists. The loader also needs the DLL’s dependencies, and a missing or incompatible dependency can produce the same message.
This is why copying another version into System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory is unsafe. It may satisfy one filename while creating an architecture mismatch or a new loader failure.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally needs the 32-bit dependency path and the 32-bit version of a component. A 64-bit application needs the 64-bit version. Do not use the folder name alone to decide what to replace.
Does regsvr32 fix wiascanprofiles.dll?
Usually, no. regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the registration entry points expected by that tool. Microsoft documents its purpose in the regsvr32 command reference.

It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. Registering an absent, damaged, wrong-architecture, or dependency-broken file will not repair the Windows component store. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first. Only use regsvr32 when an official application or device support procedure specifically requires registration and identifies the correct file.
If DISM and SFC still cannot repair it
Try System Restore if the problem began recently and a suitable restore point exists:

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings but does not remove personal files. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
For persistent corruption, use Microsoft’s in-place installation repair with official Windows installation media. This is preferable to manually replacing system DLLs because it rebuilds Windows components while offering a path to preserve data and applications. If malware is suspected or Windows cannot be repaired, follow Microsoft’s recovery options and installation-media instructions.

Should I download wiascanprofiles.dll?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the scanner manufacturer’s official driver, or the affected application’s official installer.
Is it part of Visual C++?
No. wiascanprofiles.dll belongs to Windows Image Acquisition and scan-profile support. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable is not the correct general fix.
Should I copy it from another computer?
Avoid that. Windows builds, architecture, language, and servicing state must match exactly, and manual copying can hide the actual component-store problem.
What if only one game or application reports it?
Record the application name, full error text, Windows version, and when the failure started. Repair or reinstall that application first, then test whether other WIA applications work.
What if every scanner application fails?
Check the WIA service and scanner driver, then run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. That pattern points more strongly to Windows or the imaging driver than to one application.
Keep Windows updated, install scanner drivers only from the hardware manufacturer, and retain backups before major system repairs.
