cdvdiso.dll is an old PCSX2 CDVD plugin, not a Windows system file. If Windows or PCSX2 says cdvdiso.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the PCSX2 installation rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
Older PCSX2 releases used separate plugins for reading optical discs and ISO images. The file commonly appeared as the “Linuz ISO CDVD” plugin inside an old PCSX2 plugins directory. It is associated mainly with PCSX2 0.9.x and 1.x installations, including PCSX2 1.1.0 and 1.4.0.
Current PCSX2 releases use a newer integrated design and should not require the old-style cdvdiso.dll plugin. The safest fix is therefore to back up your PCSX2 data and move to the current release from the official PCSX2 website.
Fix 1: Upgrade or reinstall PCSX2
Time needed: 10–20 minutes, plus the time needed to reinstall a game configuration

- What You Get: PS2 controller, exquisite packaging, user manual
This is the most likely solution for cdvdiso.dll errors. The old installation may be incomplete, damaged, partially updated, or using a configuration that points to a plugin that no longer exists.
Back up memory cards and configuration
Before uninstalling or replacing PCSX2:
- Open PCSX2’s installation and data folders.
- Look for the
memcardsdirectory and copy it to your Documents folder, an external drive, or another safe location. - Also preserve configuration files, BIOS files, save folders, screenshots, and custom controller profiles if you still need them.
- If you are unsure where PCSX2 stores them, search File Explorer for
memcardsand for files associated with your PCSX2 installation.
Do not delete the old folder until you have confirmed that your memory cards and configuration have been preserved.
Install the current PCSX2 release
- Close PCSX2 completely.
- Download the current Windows build from the official PCSX2 website.
- Install it in a new folder rather than overwriting the old installation.
- Start PCSX2 from the new installation.
- Complete its setup and select your legally obtained BIOS files and game images.
- Test a game.
If the current build starts and loads a game without asking for cdvdiso.dll, the repair worked. The old plugin is no longer needed.
If the new PCSX2 installation shows a different error, record the exact message and continue with the runtime check below. Do not copy the old DLL into the new PCSX2 folder.

Fix 2: Restore the complete plugin set for old PCSX2
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Use this fix only if you must keep an older PCSX2 1.x installation for a particular configuration or game. Do not mix files from unrelated PCSX2 releases.
- Right-click the old PCSX2 shortcut and select Open file location.
- Open the
pluginsdirectory. - Check whether
CDVDiso.dllorcdvdiso.dllis present. Windows normally ignores capitalization, but the configured plugin name may use uppercase letters. - Open PCSX2’s plugin or CDVD configuration screen.
- Check the configured path and confirm that it points to the old installation’s
pluginsfolder. - If the folder is missing files, reinstall the exact PCSX2 version that created the configuration.
- If you have a trusted backup of that same installation, restore the complete original
pluginsfolder, not just this DLL. - Restart PCSX2 and test the CDVD or ISO source again.
A complete matching plugin directory should contain the other components expected by that PCSX2 release. A solitary DLL copied from another build can fail because of an incompatible plugin interface, missing dependencies, or a different processor architecture.
If the old installer is unavailable, upgrading PCSX2 is safer than reconstructing the installation from individual files.
Fix 3: Install the Visual C++ runtime that matches PCSX2
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A message saying that a module could not be found does not always mean that cdvdiso.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load the file because a dependency used by the plugin is missing.

Older PCSX2 builds commonly used 32-bit executables and plugins. A 64-bit version of Windows can still require the x86 runtime for those applications.
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Download and install
vc_redist.x86.exefor an old 32-bit PCSX2 build. - If you also use current 64-bit PCSX2 or other 64-bit applications, install
vc_redist.x64.exeas well. - If the installer offers Repair, choose it. Otherwise, complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open PCSX2 and test the same game or ISO.
Installing a runtime supplies shared dependencies. It does not replace cdvdiso.dll, repair a damaged plugin, or make an incompatible plugin version work.
Do not remove every existing Visual C++ Redistributable package. Multiple versions can coexist, and unrelated applications may depend on them.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 minutes
Antivirus software may have quarantined or removed an old emulator plugin. That is possible, but the alert should not automatically be treated as a false positive.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cdvdiso.dllor the old PCSX2 folder. - Review the detection name, file path, and source.
- If the file came from an unofficial emulator package, crack, repack, or unknown archive, do not restore it. Remove that installation and install PCSX2 from its official source.
- Restore or allow the file only when you trust its provenance and have independently evaluated the detection.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how these decisions work. Allowing a genuine threat can expose the computer.
After a trusted restoration, restart PCSX2. If the antivirus immediately quarantines the file again, stop using that copy and reinstall the application from a trusted official installer.
Fix 5: Check the configured path and test another ISO
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
An old PCSX2 configuration can retain a drive letter or plugin directory that no longer exists.
- Start the old PCSX2 installation.
- Open its Config, Plugin, CDVD, or similarly named settings menu.
- Confirm that the CDVD plugin path points to the current old PCSX2 installation.
- Confirm that the selected CDVD plugin is present in that folder.
- If PCSX2 lets you select an ISO, choose a different legally obtained, known-good image.
- Start the test game.
If another ISO works, the problem may concern the original image, its path, or the CDVD configuration rather than cdvdiso.dll. If every game fails before emulation starts, focus on the PCSX2 installation, plugin path, architecture, and runtime dependencies.

Fix 6: Update related drivers only when PCSX2 also has graphics or device errors
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A graphics, chipset, or optical-drive driver is not the normal cause of a missing cdvdiso.dll. Check drivers only if PCSX2 also reports rendering failures, device initialization errors, crashes during startup, or trouble reading physical media.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, DVD/CD-ROM drives, and any category named in the PCSX2 error.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test PCSX2 again.
For graphics drivers, the hardware manufacturer’s official support page is generally preferable to a generic driver source. Do not replace a working driver solely because cdvdiso.dll is missing.
Manually checking hardware models and driver versions is time-consuming, especially when several devices are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling or upgrading PCSX2 remains the definitive fix when the error belongs to that emulator.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only if Windows has other problems
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
cdvdiso.dll is not a protected Windows component, so System File Checker is not expected to restore it. Use these commands when Windows also has damaged system apps, update failures, crashes, or other missing system files.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Test PCSX2.
Microsoft provides the official DISM and SFC repair instructions.
Repeating these commands will not recreate an old PCSX2 plugin. If Windows reports that it repaired files but PCSX2 still cannot load cdvdiso.dll, return to the PCSX2 reinstall or matching-plugin fix.
Manually running SFC and DISM can leave you guessing which component changed and whether the result affected the application. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling PCSX2 remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Why random DLL downloads are the wrong fix
Do not download cdvdiso.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, a game directory, or a new PCSX2 installation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use regsvr32?
Normally, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the appropriate COM or ActiveX registration behavior. An old PCSX2 plugin is normally loaded directly by PCSX2, not registered globally with Windows.

Running:
regsvr32 cdvdiso.dll
will not restore a missing file, install its dependencies, repair its plugin interface, or convert it into a Windows component. It can also produce another confusing error. Leave the file in the matching PCSX2 plugins directory if you are maintaining an old installation.
What the common errors mean
| Message or code | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
cdvdiso.dll is missing or was not found |
The old PCSX2 plugin is absent, or the configured path is wrong |
| File is not a valid dynamic library | The file may be damaged, the wrong architecture, incompatible, or not the expected DLL |
| Error 126 | The DLL or one of its dependencies could not be found |
| Error 127 | A required procedure entry point could not be found, often indicating an incompatible version |
| Only one game fails | Check that ISO and the CDVD/ISO configuration first |
| Every program appears to report it | Verify that the message really names cdvdiso.dll; generic DLL pages often show boilerplate unrelated to the affected application |
Likely causes, in order
- An incomplete, damaged, or obsolete PCSX2 installation
- A missing plugin from an old PCSX2 installation
- A wrong PCSX2 plugin version or architecture
- A missing x86 Visual C++ dependency
- Antivirus quarantine or deletion
- An outdated configuration pointing to a missing folder
- A broader Windows problem, which is less likely because this is not a Windows DLL
If the problem began immediately after a Windows or software change, System Restore may roll back system settings and installed programs without changing personal files. Use it only after preserving important data.
FAQ
Is cdvdiso.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with old PCSX2 installations and should not normally be in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
What does cdvdiso.dll do?
It is an old CDVD/ISO-reading plugin used by PCSX2 to access PlayStation 2 disc images or optical media.
Does current PCSX2 need it?
Current PCSX2 releases do not use the old-style plugin DLL architecture. A current installation should not require cdvdiso.dll.
Can I copy it from another computer?
Only a complete, trusted copy of the matching PCSX2 installation should be considered. Do not mix an isolated DLL with a different PCSX2 executable or plugin set.
