“The program can’t start because json.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
json.dll is not a verified Windows system DLL. It is normally a private file installed beside the application that needs it, so the correct repair is usually to identify that application and restore its matching files.

Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches your situation:
- The error names a program or game: repair, verify, update, or reinstall that program from its official installer.
- The error appears when BlueStacks starts: remove the incomplete BlueStacks installation with its official cleaner procedure, then reinstall BlueStacks.
- The program disappeared, was updated, extracted from an archive, or was moved: restore the original installation rather than copying a replacement DLL.
- Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before reinstalling.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”:
json.dllmay exist, but another dependency may be missing. - Several unrelated programs are failing: check Windows components with DISM and SFC, then investigate broader system corruption.
- The error appears without opening the program: inspect Startup apps, Task Scheduler, and leftover installations.
Do not begin by downloading json.dll into System32 or SysWOW64.

What json.dll belongs to
The name is not globally unique. Different vendors can ship unrelated files with the same filename.
The strongest public identification is a legacy CodeTitans JSON library for .NET. The codetitans-json package is described as a JSON reader and writer library for .NET Framework 2.0 and later. Its latest listed package release is 1.8.3 from 2015. That does not prove that every json.dll on a Windows computer belongs to CodeTitans.
One documented file instance has these properties:
- Company: CodeTitans
- Product/file version: 1.6.0.0
- Architecture: 32-bit
- Copyright: Copyright © 2010 Paweł Hofman, CodeTitans
Public inventories also associate a signed copy with BlueStacks components. This suggests that BlueStacks bundled or redistributed the library. It does not make json.dll part of Windows.
Confirm the owner from the error window and the executable path. Record:

- What changed immediately before the error, such as an update, antivirus detection, uninstall, extraction, or disk cleanup.
To check the shortcut, right-click it, select Properties, and read the Target field. Open the target folder and look for the application’s other files. Windows normally searches the application directory before system directories, so a private DLL generally belongs beside the program that loads it.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the safest and most likely fix.
Use the application’s repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or the program entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option, open the program’s own launcher and look for Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair. These functions restore the complete application directory rather than replacing one file.
If repair fails:
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps.
- Restart again if the uninstaller requests it.
- Download the installer from the application vendor or its official launcher.
- Run the installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Install one compatible release and launch it from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair is indicated by the application opening without the json.dll message. If the same message returns immediately, the installer may be incomplete, the wrong release may be installed, or security software may be removing the file.
Do not combine a JSON.dll copied from another application with the repaired installation. Matching the filename is not enough.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 2: Follow the BlueStacks repair path
If the error appears with BlueStacks, treat it as a BlueStacks installation problem rather than a missing Windows component.
BlueStacks’ complete removal procedure uses its cleaner tool, removal of temporary files, and a fresh installation. Follow the current official procedure for your BlueStacks release:
- Close BlueStacks and any related processes.
- Download and run the official BlueStacks cleaner tool.
- Allow it to remove the BlueStacks components it identifies.
- Remove temporary files as directed by BlueStacks Support.
- Restart Windows.
- Download BlueStacks again from the official BlueStacks site.
- Install the fresh copy as an administrator.
- Start BlueStacks and confirm that it reaches its main screen.
This approach removes mixed files left by an older release. It is preferable to copying a historical 32-bit JSON.dll into a BlueStacks directory.
If another program produces the error, use that vendor’s repair or clean-reinstall instructions instead. The same filename does not establish that BlueStacks is the caller.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove a DLL during installation, extraction, or an update.
Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
json.dllor the affected application. - Expand the event and review the detected path and action.
- Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
- Verify that the application came from its official installer and that the path belongs to that installation.
Restore a quarantined file only when the application and installer are trusted and the vendor confirms the detection is incorrect. If there is any doubt, keep it quarantined, rescan the installer, and obtain a fresh official copy.
If reinstalling works but the file is quarantined again, do not disable antivirus protection as the first response. Record the detection name and file path, submit the file or detection to the application vendor and security vendor, and use only a narrowly scoped exclusion recommended by the vendor.
Fix 4: Check architecture and dependent files
A documented CodeTitans file instance is 32-bit. That is evidence about that particular file, not a universal rule for every json.dll.
A 32-bit application needs the dependency set built for it. A 64-bit replacement cannot substitute for a 32-bit file, and the reverse is also true. Check the application’s documentation or installer rather than guessing from your Windows edition. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications.
The message “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that json.dll is present but one of its dependent DLLs is missing or damaged. In that case:

- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether
json.dllexists there. - Do not move it to a Windows system folder.
- Run the application’s repair or file-verification function.
- Reinstall the complete application if repair does not restore its dependency set.
- Ask the vendor for diagnostics if the error continues.
Install a runtime only when the application vendor explicitly names it. Visual C++ Redistributable supplies Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries; it is not a replacement for a CodeTitans JSON assembly. DirectX, .NET, and device drivers are also separate dependencies and are not interchangeable fixes.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
SFC and DISM repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not normally recreate a third-party application DLL.
Use them when you also see damaged Windows features, repeated system errors, failed updates, or corruption affecting multiple applications.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. If both commands report repairs but json.dll remains missing, return to the application installer. If they report that no corruption was found, that also points away from Windows system-file damage.
Repeating these commands without recording what changed rarely helps. If you prefer assistance identifying damaged Windows components and organizing the repair process, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues; its repair actions require the full version. For a file that belongs to one application, reinstalling that application remains the definitive fix.

Driver reinstallation is not a general solution for json.dll. Use Device Manager only when the affected application vendor specifically identifies a graphics, virtualization, storage, or other driver package as part of the failure.
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category named by the vendor.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install the driver package obtained from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Do not uninstall an unrelated driver because a DLL error appeared. If several devices have warning icons, or the vendor requires a clean driver update, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; the full version performs the driver installation. It is not a substitute for repairing the application that owns json.dll.
Why regsvr32 normally does not apply
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A managed JSON library is not normally registered this way.
Running:
regsvr32 json.dll
may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, or an architecture error. That does not mean the file belongs in System32. Stop using regsvr32 unless the application vendor explicitly instructs you to register that specific DLL.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64. The application’s installer should place private dependencies in the correct directory.

A recurring error usually indicates one of these conditions:
- The updater removes a file and fails to restore it.
- Antivirus quarantines the file after each update.
- Old and new application files are being mixed.
- The program is installed for one user but launched by another.
- A scheduled task or startup entry points to an abandoned installation.
Check Settings → Apps → Installed apps, Task Manager → Startup apps, and Task Scheduler for duplicate or leftover entries. If only one Windows profile is affected, compare that user’s application path, permissions, roaming profile data, and antivirus history with a working profile.
If every clean reinstall fails, collect the executable path, json.dll properties, digital-signature information, Windows Event Viewer details, antivirus history, and the application’s installer or launcher log. In Event Viewer, open Windows Logs → Application and inspect events created at the failure time. Give those details to the application vendor.
Prevention
- Keep the application and its private DLLs together.
- Use the vendor’s updater or launcher verification feature.
- Avoid manually deleting application folders after uninstalling.
- Keep quarantine records when troubleshooting.
- Do not mix files from different releases.
- Use official installers instead of DLL download sites.
- Create a restore point before major application changes when practical.
Random DLL download sites are risky because the file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to another vendor, or be an incompatible version. Even a clean-looking replacement may leave the actual missing dependency or damaged installation untouched. The safe source is the original application vendor or its official launcher.
FAQ
Is json.dll part of Windows?
No reliable public evidence identifies this file as a standard Windows component or normal System32 or SysWOW64 file. A third-party application may legitimately install a file with that name.
Is every json.dll from CodeTitans or BlueStacks?
No. CodeTitans is the strongest public identification for a documented legacy library, and BlueStacks inventories associate one instance with BlueStacks. The requesting executable and installation path are still required.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the application vendor says it is required. Visual C++ restores Microsoft runtime libraries, not the CodeTitans JSON library.
Should I register json.dll?
Normally, no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs designed for COM registration, not ordinary managed application libraries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat if the file exists but Windows still reports it is missing?
A dependency of json.dll may be missing, or the file may have the wrong architecture. Repair the complete application installation and consult the vendor’s diagnostics.
Can SFC restore it?
SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It is not expected to restore a third-party application DLL. Use it only when broader Windows corruption is also present.
