cnhl600.dll Load Error: Diagnose Canon MP Software on Windows

“The program can’t start because cnhl600.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”

cnhl600.dll is a Canon driver DLL associated with Canon MP printer and scanner software, particularly older PIXMA MP600-era packages. It is not a Windows system component, Microsoft runtime file, or general-purpose gaming DLL.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first matching description:

  • The error appeared after removing Canon software, changing printers, or cleaning old programs: reinstall the complete Canon MP driver package.
  • The printer is an older PIXMA MP600 or related MP model: check Canon’s support page first, because the product is retired and Windows 10 or Windows 11 support may be limited.
  • The message says “The specified module could not be found,” but the DLL is present: a dependency of cnhl600.dll may be missing. Reinstall the entire driver rather than copying one DLL.
  • The problem began after an antivirus detection: review Protection history before restoring anything.
  • Several unrelated applications also report DLL errors: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
  • The failure began immediately after a Windows or driver change: consider rolling back the device driver or using System Restore.
  • You found a replacement DLL online: do not copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. Use the original Canon installer instead.

What cnhl600.dll belongs to

Public file metadata describes cnhl600.dll as CanonAPI MP LowLevelDriver, published by Canon Inc. and associated with Canon MP software. The strongest known association is the older PIXMA MP600 family, although the filename should be treated as part of Canon MP driver packages more broadly rather than proof that every copy belongs to one exact printer.

The DLL normally loads when a Canon printing or scanning utility starts, communicates with the printer, or accesses low-level device functions. The calling program may be a Canon utility, a scanner interface, or a background component left behind after the printer was removed.

It does not normally belong to Windows itself. Do not assume that putting it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is the correct repair.

Public metadata also conflicts about whether copies are 32-bit or 64-bit. The actual architecture depends on the Canon package and calling program. A 32-bit Canon utility can require a 32-bit driver DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon MP driver

This is the most likely and safest repair.

1. Identify the printer and calling program

Write down:

  • The complete error message
  • The Canon printer or scanner model
  • The Windows edition and build
  • The program named in the error, if shown
  • Whether the error appears at startup, during printing, or during scanning

To identify the program, right-click its shortcut and select Properties. The Target field shows the executable that is trying to load the DLL.

2. Remove the damaged Canon package

In Windows 11:

  1. Select Start > Settings.
  2. Open Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Search for Canon, MP Drivers, or the printer model.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside the relevant entry.
  5. Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.

In Windows 10:

  1. Select Start > Settings.
  2. Open Apps > Apps & features.
  3. Select the Canon entry.
  4. Choose Uninstall.

You can also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the Canon driver or utility, and choose Uninstall.

Remove only software belonging to the affected Canon device. If the installer says a newer Canon driver is already installed, uninstall that package first, restart Windows, and try again.

3. Restart Windows

A restart releases driver files that may still be in use and clears incomplete uninstall operations.

4. Download the model package from Canon

Open Canon’s official support site and search for the exact printer model. For the PIXMA MP600, Canon lists an MP600 MP Driver Ver. 1.11 package for older 64-bit Windows versions, including Windows 7, Vista, and XP x64.

Download the package that matches both the model and Windows architecture. Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking MP printer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the MP600 is retired, Canon does not provide Windows 10 drivers for the listed legacy products. Older Windows 7 or Windows 8 drivers may work with limitations, but this does not guarantee full printing, scanning, or printer-panel support on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

5. Install the driver

  1. Right-click the downloaded Canon installer.
  2. Select Run as administrator.
  3. Accept the license terms.
  4. Follow the installation prompts.
  5. If the installer asks for the USB cable, connect it at that point rather than before installation.
  6. Restart Windows if prompted.

Test both printing and scanning if you use both functions. A successful repair means the Canon application opens without the DLL message and Windows can communicate with the device.

If the installer refuses to run, right-click it, choose Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and try a supported older Windows compatibility setting. This is a workaround, not proof that the device is fully supported.

When manually hunting through model pages and comparing old driver packages becomes difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale or mismatched drivers and show what needs attention; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For this Canon-specific file, however, the exact Canon package remains the definitive repair.

Fix 2: Check Device Manager for a broken Canon device

Device Manager can reveal whether Windows still sees the printer but has an incomplete driver.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Look for the Canon device or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected entry and select Properties.
  6. Read the message under Device status.

If the device is present but malfunctioning, open the Driver tab. You can try Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after a driver update. Otherwise select Uninstall Device, remove the device software if Windows offers that checkbox, restart, and install the correct Canon package.

Do not use Update driver to force a random DLL into the device. Device Manager installs drivers, not isolated DLL files.

Fix 3: Check Windows architecture and package compatibility

A driver can fail even when the filename is correct if the package targets the wrong architecture or model.

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > About.
  2. Find System type.
  3. Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.

Do not mix files from different Canon models. Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit driver directory, or a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory. The correct installer places the DLL where the calling Canon program expects it.

If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” Windows may be reporting a missing dependency rather than a missing cnhl600.dll. A DLL can exist while one of the libraries it needs is absent. Reinstalling the complete Canon package restores the related files together and is safer than replacing only the named file.

Fix 4: Review antivirus quarantine

If the problem started after a security scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Find the event involving cnhl600.dll or Canon software.
  5. Read the detected file path and threat classification.

Restore the file only when it came from a verified Canon installer and you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can expose the device if the file is malicious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file came from an unofficial DLL site, do not restore it. Remove it and reinstall the Canon package from the manufacturer.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

SFC and DISM are secondary repairs. They repair protected Windows components, not necessarily a missing third-party Canon DLL. Use them when multiple unrelated programs have DLL failures or Windows itself behaves abnormally.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow

Allow each scan to complete. Restart Windows afterward and test the Canon software.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the Canon driver installation and investigate broader Windows corruption rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If repeatedly running repair commands without knowing which component changed is slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and show repair areas; the free scan identifies problems, while the full version performs repairs if you choose to use it. It is not required, and it cannot replace the correct Canon installer.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup utility, or other system change.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. Afterward, reinstall the correct Canon package if necessary.

Why common DLL fixes do not apply

Do not download cnhl600.dll separately

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong build, or the wrong architecture. Even a clean file may not match the Canon driver version or may depend on other missing files. Manual copying can also create DLL search-order problems and leave the underlying installation broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe sources are Canon’s exact model support page or original Canon installation media. A DLL from a verified Canon package is preferable to a standalone download.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix

Do not use:

regsvr32 cnhl600.dll

regsvr32 is intended for compatible DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing driver file or repair an ordinary application DLL. There is no public confirmation that cnhl600.dll is a self-registering COM component.

Visual C++ Redistributable is not the opening fix

cnhl600.dll is identified as a Canon driver file, not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Install or repair Visual C++ only if the error also names files such as MSVCP*.dll, VCRUNTIME*.dll, or MSVCR*.dll.

If it does, use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable packages and match the package to the application architecture. A 32-bit Canon program may require the x86 package on 64-bit Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Features usually will not restore it

Turning Windows Features on or off will not normally recreate a Canon driver DLL. Do not enable random legacy components to solve this error. If an old Canon installer specifically requires a Windows feature, use only the feature named by that installer and understand that this may not provide modern Windows compatibility.

If the MP600 is obsolete

For an MP600 on Windows 10 or Windows 11, first try Canon’s available legacy package and compatibility settings. Expect limitations, especially with scanning utilities and device-panel features.

If installation cannot complete, practical alternatives include:

  • Basic printing through a Windows generic printer driver
  • Running the Canon software on an older supported Windows installation
  • Keeping the device on a separate compatible computer
  • Replacing the printer or scanner

Do not promise that an older driver will provide complete functionality on a current Windows release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevention and final checks

After the repair:

  • Keep the Canon installer stored with the printer’s model information.
  • Avoid registry cleaners that remove “unused” driver files.
  • Do not delete Canon startup entries or DLLs at random.
  • If the error appears on every boot after removing the printer, uninstall leftover Canon startup software or disable its startup entry.
  • Keep antivirus protection enabled and review quarantine events before restoring files.

If the error remains, record the complete message, calling executable, Canon model, Windows version and build, DLL path, file properties, and antivirus history. Those details distinguish a missing Canon installation from a dependency failure, architecture mismatch, quarantine event, or unrelated Windows corruption.
