aswcmlx.dll is a CML Library component associated with AVAST Software security products. If Windows says aswcmlx.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Avast or AVG installation that owns it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What is aswcmlx.dll?
aswcmlx.dll is an application DLL associated with Avast and AVG antivirus software. It is not a Windows system file, and there is no evidence that it belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Archived file inventories commonly place it in one of these product folders:
C:Program FilesAVAST SoftwareAvastaswcmlx.dll
C:Program FilesAVGAntivirusaswcmlx.dll
The exact folder depends on the installed product and release. Older Avast Free Antivirus, Avast Premium Security, Avast Internet Security, Avast Premier, AVG AntiVirus, and AVG Internet Security inventories have listed the file.

| File | aswcmlx.dll |
| Component | CML Library |

These are historical indexed records, not proof of the current Avast or AVG version installed on your computer. A 32-bit DLL can be used by a 32-bit antivirus component on 64-bit Windows, so do not copy a 64-bit file into place simply because your Windows installation is 64-bit.
Fix 1: Repair Avast or AVG
A damaged or incomplete antivirus update is the most likely cause of this error. Repairing the complete product restores its files and dependencies together.
Repair Avast on Windows 11
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the prompt.
- When Avast Setup opens, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows if requested.
After restarting, open Avast from the Start menu. If it opens normally and the original program no longer displays the DLL error, the repair worked.
Repair Avast on Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Select Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the action.
- Select Repair in the Avast Setup window.
- Finish the repair and restart the computer.
Repair AVG
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Locate AVG AntiVirus FREE or AVG Internet Security.
- Select the three-dot menu, or select the product and choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the uninstall request.
- When AVG Setup appears, select Repair.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
Try opening AVG and then launch the program that originally displayed the error. If the error remains, note whether it appears during Windows startup, when opening Avast or AVG, or when launching another application.

Before uninstalling, make sure you know which product you use and whether you have a subscription account or activation details.
Reinstall Avast
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security.
- Choose Uninstall and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from Avast’s official support or product website.
- Run the installer and allow it to make changes.
- Complete installation and restart if requested.
- Update Avast from its own interface.
If normal removal fails, use Avast’s official AvastClear uninstall utility. Follow its instructions carefully; it may restart the computer into Safe Mode and remove the existing Avast installation. Install Avast again from the official Avast installer after removal finishes.
Reinstall AVG
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Select AVG AntiVirus FREE or AVG Internet Security.
- Choose Uninstall and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from AVG’s official product or support website.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows and apply available product updates.
Reinstalling the complete security product is safer than replacing one DLL because Setup installs the matching files, services, configuration, and dependencies.

Sometimes the file is present but has been quarantined. Do not restore a file solely because its name matches the error.
First check the file’s original location, publisher information, and digital signature. A genuine copy should be associated with the Avast or AVG installation folder, not an unrelated game, download directory, or temporary folder.
Avast Quarantine
- Open Avast.
- Select Quarantine.
- Find the
aswcmlx.dllentry. - Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Restore only if the file belongs to the genuine Avast installation.
- If appropriate, choose Restore and add exception.
- Restart Windows and test Avast.
Avast warns that restoring quarantined files carries security risk. If the path or signature looks suspicious, do not restore it. Submit the file through Avast’s analysis process or reinstall Avast instead.
AVG Quarantine
- Open AVG.
- Select Menu.
- Choose Quarantine.
- Select the
aswcmlx.dllentry. - Choose Restore only after verifying its location and authenticity.
- Use Restore and add exception only when you are confident the detection is incorrect.
- Restart and test the affected program.
If the file is not in Quarantine, continue with product repair or reinstall. Searching random folders for another copy is not a reliable repair.

Fix 4: Check for an incomplete uninstall
If Avast or AVG was removed recently, the error may come from a leftover startup entry, service, scheduled task, or shortcut that still points to aswcmlx.dll.
Do not reinstall the DLL merely to satisfy that obsolete reference.
- Restart Windows once.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obvious Avast or AVG entry that points to a missing installation.
- Select Services and check for an Avast or AVG service that remains after removal.
- Open Settings → Apps and confirm whether the product is still listed.
- If removal was incomplete, run the vendor’s official uninstall utility.
- Restart again.
If the error appears only at startup after the antivirus has been removed, the stale reference is more likely than a missing DLL needed by an active application.
Fix 5: Verify the file path and digital signature
The filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If a copy exists:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and record its full location.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Select Details and check whether Windows reports that the digital signature is valid.
A copy inside the Avast or AVG program directory is consistent with the known installation pattern. A copy inside a game folder, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves caution.
If the signature is invalid or the location is suspicious:
- Do not run the file.
- Do not add it as an antivirus exception.
- Scan the containing folder with Windows Security.
- Remove the associated suspicious application if appropriate.
- Run Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only as a fallback
aswcmlx.dll is an application file, so Windows system-file repair is unlikely to restore it. Use these commands when other Windows components are also malfunctioning, not as the first response to this antivirus-specific error.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall Avast or AVG again if the DLL error remains.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not normally the private application files installed by Avast or AVG.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the Avast or AVG product remains the definitive fix for this vendor DLL.
Fix 7: Do not treat this as a driver or runtime problem
There is no verified connection between aswcmlx.dll and a device driver, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, Windows Features, or Windows Update.
Do not begin by:
- Reinstalling graphics, audio, chipset, or network drivers
- Enabling random Windows Features
- Installing Visual C++ redistributables
- Installing DirectX runtime packages
- Running Windows Update repeatedly
If Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem, address that problem independently:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer if needed.
Do not expect that process to restore aswcmlx.dll.
If tracking down several outdated drivers manually is the separate problem, Outbyte Driver Updater scans and identifies driver issues; the full version installs the updates. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing the Avast or AVG installation that owns this DLL.
What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incorrect version, the wrong architecture, or a file missing required dependencies. Even a clean-looking replacement may not match the installed Avast or AVG build and often leaves the damaged installation untouched.
Never copy aswcmlx.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place it in a game or unrelated application folder either. Windows DLL search behavior is context-dependent, and forcing a DLL into another directory can create loading and security problems.
Do not use regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that aswcmlx.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
Running this command is therefore not a normal fix:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →regsvr32 aswcmlx.dll
A registration error does not repair a missing or damaged Avast/AVG component. Use product repair or reinstall instead.
If the error still appears
Record these details before contacting Avast or AVG support:
Best Value
- The exact error message
- The executable named in the dialog
- Whether the error appears at startup or only when launching a program
- The full path of any existing
aswcmlx.dll - The installed Avast or AVG product
- Your Windows version
- Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, or quarantine event
If repair and reinstall fail and the problem clearly began after a recent software change, System Restore is a fallback:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore can roll back installed programs, drivers, and system settings. It does not guarantee recovery of an antivirus file and should be used only when the timing strongly points to a recent system change.

FAQ
Is aswcmlx.dll a Windows file?
No. Known inventories associate it with Avast or AVG product folders, not Windows system directories.
Which program installed aswcmlx.dll?
It is associated with AVAST Software security products, including Avast and AVG installations. Check installed applications and the file path to identify the product on your computer.
Does the file belong to a game?
There is no credible file-specific evidence tying aswcmlx.dll to a particular game. A game may display the error because a stale shortcut or system component launches during startup, but repair the antivirus installation first.
Do I need a 64-bit replacement?
Not necessarily. Historical records list 32-bit versions. A 32-bit antivirus component can run on 64-bit Windows. Match the product installation rather than guessing from the Windows architecture.
Will Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX fix it?
There is no verified connection showing that either package supplies this DLL. Repair or reinstall Avast or AVG first.
Should I restore the file from Quarantine?
Only after confirming its original product path and digital signature. If anything looks suspicious, leave it quarantined and submit it for vendor analysis or reinstall the security product.
What is the safest fix?
Use Avast or AVG’s built-in Repair option. If that fails, remove the product with its official uninstall method and reinstall it using the official vendor installer.
