accessibility.ni.dll Missing: Repair the Right Windows Runtime

The program can’t start because accessibility.ni.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

If accessibility.ni.dll is missing, Windows is usually failing to load a .NET Framework native image while an application starts. The accessibility.ni.dll file is not a normal DLL that belongs in System32; it is generated native code created from Microsoft’s managed Accessibility.dll assembly.

Which fix applies to you

Use the branch that matches what you are seeing:

  • Only one game or application fails: Repair or reinstall that application first. Its installation, configuration, or dependency chain is the most likely problem.
  • Several .NET applications fail: Repair .NET Framework, install pending Windows updates, and run DISM followed by SFC.
  • The error started after an update or failed installation: Restart Windows, install updates, then repair .NET Framework and the affected application.
  • The path contains NativeImages_v2.0.50727: The application probably needs the older .NET Framework 3.5 feature.
  • The path contains NativeImages_v4.0.30319: Repair the .NET Framework 4.x installation.
  • Windows Security shows the file in quarantine: Verify the path and signature before restoring anything. Repairing .NET is safer than copying a quarantined file manually.
  • The message says “not designed to run on Windows” and includes 0xC000007B: Suspect a damaged or mismatched binary, then repair the application and the correct .NET Framework architecture.

What accessibility.ni.dll actually is

Microsoft’s Accessibility.dll assembly provides the managed wrapper for the COM IAccessible interface, which applications use when interacting with Windows accessibility functionality. Windows Forms and WPF applications can depend on this .NET Framework assembly when they expose or consume accessibility information.

Accessibility.ni.dll is the Native Image Generator version of that managed assembly. The .ni.dll suffix means that processor-specific native code was generated from managed .NET code. Native images can improve startup and runtime loading because the framework does not need to generate the same native code every time an application launches.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

That distinction matters:

  • Accessibility.dll is the managed assembly.
  • Accessibility.ni.dll is an optimized native image generated from it.
  • The native image is maintained by .NET Framework’s NGen system.
  • A missing native image does not automatically prove that the original managed assembly is missing.

NGen normally stores native images below %WINDIR%assembly, not as ordinary application DLLs in System32 or SysWOW64. Typical paths include:

C:WindowsassemblyNativeImages_v4.0.30319_32Accessibility<hash>Accessibility.ni.dll
C:WindowsassemblyNativeImages_v4.0.30319_64Accessibility<hash>Accessibility.ni.dll

The hash directory, file presence, and build-dependent version can vary. Do not treat a version or file size found on another computer as a universal reference.

Fix 1: Repair the application that shows the error

When one program fails and everything else works, start here. The application may have an incomplete installation, a damaged private dependency, or a configuration that points to an invalid framework state.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair, if available.
  7. Start the application again.

If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use the application’s official installer to repair or reinstall it. Download the installer only from the application developer or publisher. Restart Windows after the reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Apps & features.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if shown.
  5. Select Repair.

If the program has no repair option, uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall the current package from its official source. Back up application settings or saved games first if the program stores them locally.

A successful repair usually means the application opens normally and the error does not return. If the same program still fails while other .NET applications work, collect its exact installation path and version before contacting the developer.

Fix 2: Repair .NET Framework with Microsoft’s tool

The most likely system-wide cause is a damaged .NET Framework installation or an inconsistent native-image cache.

  1. Download Microsoft’s .NET Framework Repair Tool.
  2. Run NetFxRepairTool.exe.
  3. Accept the license terms.
  4. Allow the tool to apply its recommended repairs.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the affected application.

Microsoft documents the current repair-tool release as supporting .NET Framework 4.6.2 through 4.8. If the application requires a different framework generation, continue to the version-specific steps below.

If repair does not resolve the error, install the appropriate runtime from Microsoft’s official .NET Framework 4.8.1 download page or the .NET Framework 4.8 download page. The 4.8 page provides web and offline runtime installers. Restart Windows after installation.

On current Windows versions, .NET Framework 4.8.1 is the latest release line. Windows 11 22H2 and later include it, while Windows 10 22H2 includes 4.8 and can install 4.8.1 separately. The affected application may still require an older framework feature, so do not assume that installing the newest release replaces every legacy requirement.

Fix 3: Check whether the application needs .NET Framework 3.5

Older applications may use .NET Framework 2.0 or 3.0 assemblies. Those versions are included in the .NET Framework 3.5 Windows feature.

If the diagnostic path contains NativeImages_v2.0.50727, or the application is clearly legacy software, enable 3.5:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key, type Windows Features.
  2. Open Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Select .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
  4. Select OK.
  5. Allow Windows to download the required files.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Test the application again.

Microsoft’s .NET Framework 3.5 installation instructions cover alternate installation methods when Windows cannot obtain the feature automatically.

Do not repeatedly reinstall 4.8.1 when the application specifically depends on the 3.5 feature. The native-image generation paths are different:

NativeImages_v2.0.50727
NativeImages_v4.0.30319

Fix 4: Install Windows updates, then repair system files

An interrupted update or damaged Windows component store can prevent .NET Framework files and native images from being repaired correctly.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
  6. Test the application.

If the error remains, open an elevated Command Prompt:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run these commands separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Wait for each command to finish. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses.

Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. Restart Windows and test the application. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete the operation, note the exact message and continue with application and .NET repair rather than repeating the commands indefinitely.

If you prefer a guided scan that identifies damaged Windows components instead of manually comparing DISM and SFC results, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix when that program owns the failure.

Fix 5: Inspect the native-image cache

This is an advanced check for administrators. It can show whether NGen has a registered native image for the managed Accessibility assembly.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run the command matching the application architecture:

%WINDIR%Microsoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319ngen.exe display Accessibility

For 64-bit native images, run:

%WINDIR%Microsoft.NETFramework64v4.0.30319ngen.exe display Accessibility

A 32-bit application uses the 32-bit framework path and native images. A 64-bit application uses the 64-bit path. The operating system’s bitness alone does not tell you which one matters.

Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine

A security product or cleanup utility may have removed or quarantined a framework file. This is only a possibility, not proof of malware.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections around the time the error began.
  5. Expand an entry and inspect its path, name, and action.

Restore a quarantined file only when its location, signature, and origin are clearly trusted. If you are uncertain, leave it quarantined and repair or reinstall .NET Framework from Microsoft instead. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again.

Run a full scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan if the quarantine record or other symptoms justify it. Do not install a downloaded replacement DLL as a workaround.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the application points to one

Visual C++ Redistributable packages, DirectX, and graphics drivers are not normal owners of accessibility.ni.dll. Reinstalling them will not normally rebuild a .NET Framework native image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A driver check makes sense only when the application vendor connects the crash to a particular update, or when the same program reports a separate graphics or hardware error.

To update a device manually:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Open Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a known bad update, right-click the device, select Properties > Driver, and use Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Otherwise obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.

If manually hunting through multiple hardware vendors and driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required for this .NET Framework error, and a driver change should be based on evidence from the affected application.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a failed system change

If the error began immediately after a Windows update, application installation, cleanup operation, or other system change, System Restore may help when normal repairs fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Go to System > Recovery on Windows 11, or search for Recovery on Windows 10.
  3. Select Open System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  5. Review affected programs.
  6. Confirm the restore and restart Windows.

A restore point must already exist, and it may not remove personal files. If no suitable point is available, repair the affected application and .NET Framework instead.

Do not copy the file or run regsvr32

Do not download accessibility.ni.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, belong to a different framework build, or leave the damaged application and native-image cache untouched.

Do not copy it into:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Do not place it beside the application executable either. The correct native-image location is controlled by .NET Framework and NGen.

regsvr32 is also not an appropriate repair. It is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points. A managed assembly uses .NET registration mechanisms when required, and an NGen image is not a user-registered COM server. Rebuilding the framework and repairing the application is the correct path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to collect if the error persists

Before asking the application vendor or Microsoft for help, record:

  • The complete dialog text and hexadecimal error code.
  • The application name, version, and full executable path.
  • Whether one application or every .NET application fails.
  • Your Windows 10 or Windows 11 version and build.
  • The file path shown for accessibility.ni.dll.
  • The result of the .NET Framework release query:
reg query "HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftNET Framework SetupNDPv4Full" /v Release

Microsoft documents 528040 as .NET Framework 4.8 and 533320 as 4.8.1 or later. Also record relevant entries from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application, and the output of ngen display Accessibility.

FAQ

Is accessibility.ni.dll a Windows system DLL?

It is a .NET Framework native image, not an ordinary DLL intended for System32 or SysWOW64. It is generated from Microsoft’s managed Accessibility.dll assembly and normally resides in the native-image cache.

Do I need Visual C++ or DirectX?

Not for this file in the normal case. Install those runtimes only when the same application reports a separate Visual C++ or graphics dependency error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install both 32-bit and 64-bit .NET Framework?

The application architecture determines which native-image path is used. A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit framework components, while a 64-bit application uses the 64-bit components. Repairing the official .NET Framework installation is safer than choosing a DLL by size.

Can I delete accessibility.ni.dll and let Windows recreate it?

Do not delete files from the native-image cache manually. Use the .NET Framework Repair Tool, the official runtime installer, and NGen maintenance instead.

Why does only one application fail?

That usually points to the application’s installation, configuration, or required framework generation rather than a universal Windows failure. Repair or reinstall that application first, then address .NET Framework if necessary.
