gesturefilterwmi.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Windows 8.1 Gesture Filter feature, not a normal game dependency or a Visual C++ runtime. If Windows reports that it is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

The file is associated with the “Gesture Filter Provider” and WMI configuration used by Windows 8.1 Embedded and Industry lockdown features. Microsoft describes Gesture Filter as blocking swipes from the top, left, and right edges of the screen, while related configuration uses the WMI namespace rootstandardcimv2embedded and the GF_Config class.

File identification

Item What can be established
File gesturefilterwmi.dll
Description Gesture Filter Provider
Product association Microsoft Windows
Likely location %windir%System32wbem
Main context Windows 8.1 Gesture Filter and WMI
Definitive version Not established by authoritative Microsoft file records
Architecture Public inventories disagree, so do not assume 32-bit or 64-bit
Standalone redistributable No verified Microsoft download exists

The expected path is commonly reported as:

C:WindowsSystem32wbemGestureFilterWmi.dll

That location is based on public file inventories rather than a Microsoft file-reference page. A copy found in an application folder, temporary directory, or another unexpected search location needs additional scrutiny.

Microsoft’s documentation on Windows lockdown features provides the strongest evidence for the file’s role. Windows 8.1 reached end of support on January 10, 2023, so this component is most naturally associated with an older Windows installation, OEM image, upgrade, or embedded system.

Messages caused by the missing file

You may see wording such as:

The program can't start because GestureFilterWmi.dll is missing from your computer.

Other variants include:

Error loading GestureFilterWmi.dll. The specified module could not be found.
GestureFilterWmi.dll is corrupted
GestureFilterWmi.dll cannot be located
Cannot find C:WINDOWSsystem32wbemGestureFilterWmi.dll
GestureFilterWmi.dll file could not be loaded
GestureFilterWmi.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error

These messages do not identify a particular game or commercial application. No specific program has been reliably verified as the trigger. Record the exact executable named in the error before repairing anything, especially if the message appears when an old OEM utility starts.

Before repairing: identify the actual problem

1. Check your Windows version

Press Win + R, type:

winver

and press Enter.

Note the Windows edition and version. Also check Settings > System > About for the system type.

A Windows 8.1 installation, an upgraded computer, or an embedded/OEM image makes this filename more plausible. On a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, the error may come from an outdated program that is requesting an older component rather than from a current application dependency.

2. Check whether the file exists

Open PowerShell from the Start menu and run:

Get-ChildItem -Path "$env:windirSystem32","$env:windirSysWOW64" `
  -Filter GestureFilterWmi.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

Interpret the result carefully:

  • A file under System32wbem is consistent with the reported Windows location.
  • A file under SysWOW64 may reflect a 32-bit component, but public records do not establish a definitive architecture for every build.
  • A file in an application directory is not automatically the correct replacement.
  • No result means the file is absent from the locations checked, but it does not prove that the application should ship its own copy.

To inspect a discovered file’s signature, replace the path below with the exact path returned:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:WindowsSystem32wbemGestureFilterWmi.dll"

A valid Microsoft signature supports the file’s provenance. An invalid or missing signature does not by itself prove malware, but it means you should not restore or allow the file without further investigation.

Fix 1: install updates and restart

Start with normal Windows servicing.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
  6. Start the affected program again.

On an old Windows 8.1 or OEM installation, a damaged or incomplete update may have left system components unavailable. Do not install an old update package blindly just because it mentions Windows 8.1. A historical Windows 8.1 update is not documented as a standalone repair for this DLL.

If the error remains, continue with the system repair commands below.

Fix 2: repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair path for a missing or corrupted Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
  2. When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the program or service that produced the error.

DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses to replace damaged protected files. Microsoft documents running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, do not download the DLL manually. Review the CBS log, rerun DISM, and use a matching Windows repair source if necessary.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether the component store changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds, but its repair features require the full version and it is not required; Windows repair commands remain the appropriate first step.

If DISM cannot find repair files

DISM may need a matching Windows installation source when Windows Update cannot provide the required files. The source must match the installed Windows edition and version closely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft explains the process in its guide to repairing a Windows image. Depending on the source, the command has this general form:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<matching-repair-source> /LimitAccess

Do not guess the source path or use media from a different Windows release. If you have an OEM computer, its recovery media may be more appropriate than unrelated installation media.

Fix 3: check antivirus quarantine

A security product may have quarantined the file, particularly after a cleanup or detection event.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and select Windows Security.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving GestureFilterWmi.dll.
  5. Expand the event and record the original path and detection name.
  6. Do not select Allow on device until the path and signature have been checked.
  7. Run a full scan.

Restore the file only when it was originally located in the expected Windows directory, the file is confirmed as Microsoft-signed, and the security scan does not indicate tampering. Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk. If the file was found in an application folder or an unusual search-path directory, leave it quarantined and repair Windows or reinstall the affected application instead.

Fix 4: repair the application that triggers the message

Although no particular commercial application is verified for this filename, an old OEM or embedded-related program may request a Windows 8.1 component.

First identify the trigger:

  1. Note the program name in the error window.
  2. Right-click its shortcut and select Open file location.
  3. Check Properties > Details for the publisher and product name.
  4. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps to locate it.
  5. Choose Advanced options > Repair, if that option exists.
  6. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the program.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall it only from the developer’s official installer or the computer manufacturer’s recovery source.

If the program has a built-in Verify, Repair, or Check files function, use that instead of copying a DLL into its directory. Reinstalling the identified legacy application is the definitive fix when that application legitimately shipped a private copy.

Fix 5: investigate drivers only when Windows identifies one

GestureFilterWmi.dll is not established as a generic display, touch, or game driver file. Do not update every driver simply because the filename contains “Gesture.”

Use Device Manager only if the error coincides with a touch, tablet, kiosk, or OEM input device:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Look for a warning icon under Human Interface Devices, System devices, or the relevant manufacturer category.
  3. Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
  5. Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart and test the device.

Avoid third-party driver packages that do not identify the exact hardware model. Hunting through many driver versions manually can be slow; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, but installation through its full version is optional and updating a driver will not replace a missing Windows DLL in every case.

Fix 6: use System Restore or matching recovery media

If the problem began after an update, cleanup utility, failed servicing operation, or security action, System Restore may return the system files and settings to an earlier state.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point from before the error began.
  3. Review the affected programs.
  4. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally does not remove personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, use matching Windows installation media or the OEM recovery source for an in-place repair. Back up important files first.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a random website

A manually downloaded DLL can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or fail because the underlying component store is damaged. It can also obscure the original cause.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Microsoft installation media, or the original OEM recovery source instead.

Do not install unrelated runtimes

There is no verified connection between this filename and:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
  • DirectX
  • .NET Framework
  • A game runtime

Installing those packages will not normally restore a Windows WMI provider.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly OLE or ActiveX components. There is no verified evidence that this Windows WMI provider should be registered manually. Running:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 GestureFilterWmi.dll

is therefore not a normal fix and may produce a misleading error.

Do not mix architectures or Windows builds

Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, or a Windows 8.1 file onto Windows 10 or Windows 11. Public inventory records conflict about the architecture and versions of this file, so treat those listings as non-authoritative.

FAQ

Is gesturefilterwmi.dll safe?

The genuine Windows component is associated with Microsoft and the “Gesture Filter Provider.” Verify the original path and Authenticode signature before trusting a discovered copy.

Is it a game DLL?

There is no verified evidence that it belongs to a particular game. Its documented context is Windows 8.1 Gesture Filter and WMI, especially embedded and Industry lockdown scenarios.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Usually no. Those runtime packages are not established as dependencies of this filename.

What if I use Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Check which executable requests the file. It may be an old OEM or legacy application expecting a Windows 8.1 component. Repair Windows first, then repair or remove the program that makes the request.

What if the file is missing from System32wbem?

Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. If repair fails, use a matching installation source or System Restore. Do not obtain a replacement from a DLL download sites site.

What if the error continues after SFC?

Record the triggering executable, full path shown in the message, Windows edition and build, file presence, and signature status. Then inspect CBS.log, retry DISM with a matching source, and consider an in-place repair or OEM recovery option. Rebuilding the WMI repository should not be an early step because a missing DLL is primarily a file-servicing problem.
