“hprof.dll” error messages
You may see one of these Windows loader messages when starting an older application, launcher, or game:
The program can’t start because hprof.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
The code execution cannot proceed because hprof.dll was not found.

A Java-specific error may instead say that the hprof agent could not be loaded.
The 60-second answer
hprof.dll is an old Oracle Java profiling-agent DLL, not a Windows system file. It normally belongs in a Java installation or in the affected application’s private jre, runtime, or bin folder.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the application that reports the error. If it needs a separate Java installation, install the matching Java 7 or Java 8 architecture required by that program. Do not download an isolated DLL, copy it into System32, or run regsvr32 against it.

Java 9 and later also changed the situation: Oracle removed the HPROF agent from JDK 9. If the application starts Java with -agentlib:hprof, installing a newer Java version may not help. The program may need its supported Java 7/8 runtime or an application update.
What hprof.dll does
HPROF was a Java heap and CPU profiling agent. Its Windows implementation was a dynamically linked library loaded by the Java Virtual Machine through JVMTI.
Developers could invoke it with commands such as:
java -agentlib:hprof
java -agentlib:hprof=help
java -Xrunhprof
It could collect heap, CPU, monitor-contention, and heap-dump information. It was demonstration and diagnostic code rather than a normal Windows component.
That explains why the file can appear in an older application without being present in Windows itself. The file is associated with the Java runtime that installed it, not with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Why the error appears
The usual causes are:
- An application update or Java installation did not finish correctly.
- A cleanup utility deleted part of an old runtime.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The application is loading a private Java runtime that is damaged.
- A 32-bit program is being pointed at a 64-bit Java installation, or the reverse.
- The program expects the HPROF agent but is running on Java 9 or later.
- The file was copied from another Java installation and no longer matches the application.
Reported file metadata is consistent with older Java 7 and Java 8 builds, including 32-bit and 64-bit variants. That does not identify the exact application or installer. The path shown in the error, the executable that starts, and the application’s own runtime configuration matter more than the filename alone.
Fix 1: Repair the affected application first
This is the highest-probability fix because many older Java applications include their own runtime.

Use the application’s repair option
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Open Start, search for the application, right-click it, and choose Uninstall if no repair option is available.
- Before uninstalling, check the application’s launcher or maintenance utility for Repair, Verify files, Repair installation, or Reinstall runtime.
- Run that repair function.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
If the program came from an installer, download the current installer from the application’s developer or vendor and run it over the existing installation when the installer supports repair. If the application explicitly requires Java 7 or Java 8, use the vendor’s supported package rather than automatically choosing the newest Java release.
Find the runtime the application actually uses
A system-wide Java installation may not be involved. Check the application’s installation folder:
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click the application’s shortcut and choose Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field and note the executable path.
- Choose Open File Location if available.
- Look for folders named
jre, runtime, java, orbin. - Search inside the application’s own folder for
hprof.dll.
If the file should be in that private runtime but is missing, reinstalling system Java will usually have no effect. Repair or reinstall the application instead.
If the shortcut points to java.exe, open Command Prompt and run:
where java
java -version
These commands show which Java executable is found through PATH and which version responds. They do not prove that the application uses that Java. A launcher can override PATH and load a private runtime.
How to tell whether it worked
The repair succeeded if the application starts without the loader message and its launcher reaches the normal sign-in or main window. If the same error returns, note the executable path and inspect whether the application is still using a damaged private runtime.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 2: Install the correct Java architecture
Java architecture must match the application, not merely the edition of Windows.
A 32-bit Java application needs a 32-bit Java runtime even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs a 64-bit runtime. Older HPROF files were distributed in both forms, so replacing a 32-bit file with a 64-bit copy is not a valid repair.
Determine whether Windows is 64-bit
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Check System type.
This tells you whether Windows itself is 32-bit or 64-bit, but it does not identify the application’s architecture.
Determine the application’s architecture
Check the vendor’s system requirements or installer name. You can also inspect the application’s installation folders and launcher documentation. A program installed under a legacy 32-bit application location may be 32-bit, but the folder alone is not definitive.
If the vendor provides separate x86 and x64 Java packages, install the one specified for the application. Java 7/8 packages may be required for older software that invokes HPROF.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application.
- If it still fails, inspect its shortcut again.
- Confirm that it is pointing to the newly installed runtime rather than an old private
java.exe.
Do not change the global PATH unless the vendor’s instructions require it. Changing PATH can affect other Java programs and still will not repair a bundled runtime.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a Java DLL after a detection or a mistaken classification.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
hprof.dllor the affected application. - Expand the entry and inspect its original path, threat name, and action.
- Restore the file only if it came from the expected Java installation or the application’s trusted installation directory.
- If the path is temporary, unknown, or suspicious, do not restore it.
- Reinstall the application or Java runtime from its official vendor source instead.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can put the device at risk if the detection was valid. A filename alone does not establish authenticity. Check the file’s location, digital signature, parent application, and scan results.

Do not keep restoring the same unverified copy.
Fix 4: Handle a Java 9-or-newer mismatch
A missing-file message is not always caused by deletion. Oracle removed the HPROF agent in JDK 9. Java can still create HPROF-format heap dumps through tools such as jcmd and jmap, but the old hprof agent itself is no longer available.
This commonly appears when a launcher passes an argument like:
-agentlib:hprof
To check for that argument:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Choose Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Look for
-agentlib:hprofor-Xrunhprof. - Check the application’s configuration files if the shortcut does not contain it.
If present, use the Java version supported by the application, commonly an older Java 7 or Java 8 runtime, or update the application to a release that no longer depends on HPROF. Installing the latest Java alone is not a universal solution for this error.

Use this step when the application genuinely depends on system Java rather than a bundled runtime.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Java.
- Remove only the Java installation identified as damaged or unsupported.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the required Java package from the official Java vendor or the application vendor.
- Choose the required Java generation and x86 or x64 architecture.
- Run the installer as administrator if the vendor recommends it.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
The Java Runtime Environment is intended for running applications, while the JDK includes development and diagnostic tools. Install the package the application vendor specifies. Do not install several unrelated Java versions merely to make the error disappear.

If the application has its own jre or runtime folder, return to Fix 1. A system Java reinstall may not touch that folder.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
hprof.dll is not normally a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker is unlikely to restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is showing other corruption symptoms, such as broken built-in apps, failed updates, or multiple system-file errors.

- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command normally replaces an Oracle Java DLL. If the application still reports hprof.dll, reinstall the application or its matching runtime.
When the manual process means repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected Java application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Graphics or chipset drivers do not normally provide hprof.dll. Driver work is relevant only when the Java application also crashes with display errors, freezes, or shows broader hardware-related failures.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, System devices, or the category named by the application’s vendor.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean, application-specific driver update, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Do not expect a driver update to replace a missing Java agent.
When identifying stale drivers manually means hunting through many hardware entries and guessing which version is relevant, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional and is not a substitute for repairing the Java application that owns hprof.dll.
What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong Java build, the wrong architecture, or a file with no trustworthy provenance. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match the application’s Java runtime or its dependent libraries.
Use the application’s official installer or the official Java vendor’s download and archive pages. A controlled manual replacement is defensible only when the file comes from the exact trusted installer, Java update, architecture, and application directory.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
hprof.dll is not ordinarily a Windows component. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create DLL search-order problems and will not fix an incompatible Java runtime.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 registers COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. HPROF is a Java profiling agent loaded by the JVM, not a COM component. Running this command is therefore not a repair:
regsvr32 hprof.dll
It may produce another error while leaving the original problem unchanged.
Best Value
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET repair different runtime dependencies. They are not targeted solutions for a missing Java HPROF agent.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when:
- The application worked previously.
- The deletion or failure began after a known system change.
- A restore point predates that change.
- A clean application installer is unavailable or ineffective.
Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a suitable restore point. This rolls back system settings and installed components but is not a replacement for reinstalling an application when a trusted installer is available.

Is hprof.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the Oracle Java Platform SE binary and is not normally supplied as a protected Windows file in System32 or SysWOW64.
Does every Java installation contain hprof.dll?
No. Its presence depends on the Java generation, package, vendor build, and application runtime. It is associated with legacy Java distributions, particularly Java 7 and Java 8 environments.
Should I install the latest Java?
Not automatically. If the application uses -agentlib:hprof, Java 9 and later removed that agent. Use the application’s supported Java 7/8 runtime or update the application.
Why did reinstalling Java not help?
The application may use a private runtime in its own installation folder. Repair or reinstall the application, then inspect the launcher’s actual Java path.

Will SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while hprof.dll is a Java application file.
Can multiple Java versions coexist?
Yes. Multiple versions can be installed, and an application may use a bundled runtime instead of the version shown by java -version. Check the launcher before changing PATH.
