srpuxnativesnapin.dll: Windows Component Repair Checklist

Length8 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before replacing anything, note:

  • Which Windows tool fails, such as Local Security Policy, Group Policy, or an AppLocker configuration screen.
  • Whether the error appears at sign-in, when opening a management console, or after Windows Update.
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. Press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. Check System Type.
  • Whether antivirus software recently quarantined a file.
  • Whether the problem affects every user account or only one.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

srpuxnativesnapin.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component associated with AppLocker and Group Policy interfaces. Do not treat it as a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX file, game runtime, or ordinary application DLL.

What SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll does

The file is recorded as Application Control Policies Group Policy Editor Extension. It is a COM-style Windows component used by policy-management interfaces, including AppLocker-related configuration.

Public Windows file and registry inventories associate it with these locations:

C:WindowsSystem32SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll

The second path applies on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit installation can contain both a native 64-bit copy in System32 and a 32-bit copy in SysWOW64. These folders are not interchangeable, and the correct file depends on the installed Windows build as well as its architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Historical file inventories show versions from Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 releases. Those lists are not a complete compatibility table. Do not download an old version simply because its filename matches.

What the error messages mean

Windows may display variations such as:

  • “The program can’t start because SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll was not found.”
  • “SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll was not found.”
  • “SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll is corrupted.”

These messages indicate that Windows could not load the component requested by a policy-management interface. The cause may be deletion, corruption, a damaged component store, a failed update, a blocked file, a wrong-architecture replacement, or a path and registration problem.

A missing file does not prove malware. Conversely, a file with the correct name is not automatically safe if it is in the wrong folder or lacks a valid Microsoft signature.

Fix 1: Install updates and restart

Windows Update is the safest first check because repaired system components are normally delivered through Windows servicing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if no restart is immediately requested.
  6. Reopen the Group Policy or AppLocker tool that produced the error.

If the error began immediately after an update, this step can complete an interrupted installation or install a corrective update. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading the DLL.

On Windows 11, some installations also show Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Follow the prompts, keep the computer connected to power, and restart when prompted.

Fix 2: Repair Windows, then verify system files

This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source. See Microsoft’s System File Checker procedure.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected policy-management function again.

Success means SFC reports that it did not find any integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. The affected Group Policy or AppLocker interface should open without the DLL error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC says it found corrupted files but could not repair some of them, run the DISM command again and then repeat sfc /scannow. If the component store itself is damaged, use a compatible repair source as documented in Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
sfc /scannow

C:RepairSourceWindows is only an example. It must point to a known-good repair source that matches the installed Windows version. Using an arbitrary folder or an older Windows image can create another mismatch.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version; Windows servicing remains the supported repair path for this Microsoft component.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software may remove or quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not restore it solely because the filename appears in the error.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Click Protection history.
  6. Review detections around the time the error began.
  7. Open a relevant detection and inspect its path and details.

Only consider restoring a detection after confirming that it is the genuine Windows component, that the path is an expected Windows directory, and that the file has valid Microsoft digital-signature information. Microsoft explains the risks and available actions in its Protection History guidance.

If the file was quarantined because its signature failed or its location was unusual, leave it quarantined. Run a full scan and an offline scan, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC. A restored malicious replacement can put the computer at risk.

Fix 4: Check the file path and signature

Use File Explorer to check whether the expected file exists:

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. Enter %windir%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Search for SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll.
  4. On 64-bit Windows, also check %windir%SysWOW64.
  5. Right-click any matching file and select Properties.
  6. Check the Digital Signatures tab for Microsoft signing information.

A file outside the Windows directories is not automatically legitimate. Do not copy it into an application folder to bypass the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A “not designed to run on Windows” error commonly points to a wrong architecture, wrong Windows build, incomplete file, or damaged file. On 64-bit Windows, do not copy a 32-bit DLL over the native System32 copy or use a file from an older Windows release. Let Windows servicing select the correct copies.

Fix 5: Do not use a DLL download or routine registration

Avoid websites that offer isolated DLL downloads. A downloaded file may have the wrong Windows build, wrong architecture, altered contents, or malware, and it often does not repair the underlying component-store problem.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official Windows installation media instead. Microsoft does not appear to publish a dedicated standalone download page for this individual DLL.

regsvr32 is also not a routine fix here. That command is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. This component is associated with COM loading, but public export information does not show that registration entry point. Running commands such as these is therefore not an appropriate first-line repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll

If you already ran regsvr32 and received an entry-point error, that result does not identify the original cause. Continue with Windows repair.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the error started after a driver installation, update, security-product change, or other system modification and a restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Click Scan for affected programs to review likely changes.
  7. Select Next, then Finish.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally affects system files, drivers, installed programs, and settings rather than personal documents. It is not a substitute for malware cleanup and does not guarantee that every Windows component issue will be corrected.

Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when the timing supports it

A driver is not the normal source of SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll, but a recent driver or endpoint-security update can coincide with system damage or policy failures. Do not use Device Manager to search for this DLL itself.

To review recent driver changes:

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the device category related to the change.
  3. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Review Driver Date, Driver Version, and whether Roll Back Driver is available.
  6. Use Roll Back Driver only when the problem began after that specific update.
  7. Otherwise select Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which versions it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; do not treat driver updating as the definitive repair for this Windows DLL.

Windows Features are also not a usual repair mechanism for this file. You can check policy-related components through Settings > System > Optional features > More Windows features, but do not remove and re-add random features to replace a damaged system DLL. Repair Windows first.

Fix 8: Perform an in-place Windows repair

Use an in-place repair when DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore do not resolve the problem and Windows remains usable.

  1. Back up important files.
  2. Obtain official Windows installation media matching the installed edition and language.
  3. Start Windows normally.
  4. Open the media and run setup.exe.
  5. Follow the setup screens.
  6. Select Keep personal files and apps when offered.
  7. Confirm the selection and begin the repair.
  8. Complete setup and test the policy tools.

Do not boot directly into a clean installation unless you intend to remove applications and data. Microsoft’s installation-media recovery guidance explains the available reinstall paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error persists

Collect evidence before making further changes:

  • Check %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log for SFC repair entries.
  • Check available disk space and disk health.
  • Run an offline malware scan.
  • Recheck the file’s location and Microsoft signature.
  • Test another administrative profile if only one account is affected.
  • If the PC is domain-managed, ask the administrator whether Group Policy or endpoint-security software is blocking or replacing the component.

If the error affects only one account, profile corruption is possible, but it is not established as a file-specific cause. If every account fails and Windows repair cannot restore the file, an in-place repair is the practical next escalation.

FAQ

Is SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component described as the Application Control Policies Group Policy Editor Extension and associated with AppLocker and Group Policy interfaces.

Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX problem?

Usually not. Visual C++ errors name files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. DirectX errors identify DirectX components. Those redistributables are not the normal repair path for this file.

Should I download SrpUxNativeSnapIn.dll separately?

No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official Windows installation media. A matching filename does not guarantee a compatible or safe file.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 fix it?

Not normally. Registration is not the appropriate first-line repair for this component. Repair Windows instead.

Which command should I run first?

Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart after both commands and test the affected policy tool.
