dsccoreconfprov.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows library used by PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC), not a game dependency or Visual C++ runtime. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows components first, then check DSC, WMI, antivirus quarantine, and any application that triggered the error.
What this file actually does
Windows PowerShell DSC deploys and maintains a computer’s configuration. Its resources can inspect or enforce settings such as files, directories, services, and registry values.

dsccoreconfprov.dll is associated with the native DSC configuration provider used by the MSFT_FileDirectoryConfiguration resource. That provider operates through the WMI/CIM namespace:
root/Microsoft/Windows/DesiredStateConfiguration
This makes the error more relevant to PowerShell, WMI, configuration-management software, and Windows administration than to ordinary desktop applications.

Microsoft package records identify the file in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. One documented file version is 6.3.9600.16394, but that does not establish one universal version or file size for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build. Current servicing details can vary by Windows release and update state.
Microsoft’s documentation describes DSC and its built-in resources in the PowerShell DSC overview and identifies the file-and-directory resource in its DSC node-management documentation.
Causes matched to symptoms
| What you see | Most likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| PowerShell, DSC, or WMI reports the file missing | Corrupted or missing Windows component | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The problem began after an update or rollback | Incomplete Windows servicing | Restart, install pending updates, then repair Windows |
| The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found” | A dependency, registration, or provider problem | Check the event log and DSC/WMI availability |
| Only one management application fails | Application-specific corruption or an incompatible private component | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Windows Security shows a detection | Quarantine or a potentially altered file | Verify the file before restoring it |
| The file is outside the Windows directory or unsigned | Possible unwanted or altered copy | Scan the system and do not restore it blindly |
| The error started after a cleanup utility or system change | Damaged files, registry entries, or provider registration | Use System Restore or Windows repair |
The wording “specified module could not be found” does not always mean dsccoreconfprov.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load a dependency that it needs.
Fix 1: Repair Windows components automatically
This is the safest first repair when the error appears in PowerShell, DSC, WMI, or Windows administration.
1. Install updates and restart
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if Windows Update does not insist on it.
Then run the repair commands from an elevated Command Prompt.
2. Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because the percentage may remain unchanged for a while.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies protected system files. A successful completion message indicates that the restore operation finished. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, retry after Windows Update is working. You can also use a matching repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. Microsoft explains this sequence in its System File Checker and DISM repair guide.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed. Its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Run SFC
After DISM completes, use the same elevated Command Prompt and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files were not detected as corrupted.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and retry the DSC or management operation.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again, and run SFC again.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows and retry from an elevated Command Prompt.
Restart after SFC, then repeat the action that produced the error.
Fix 2: Verify the installed copy
Do not replace the file before checking whether a legitimate copy is already present.
The normal 64-bit Windows location is:
%WINDIR%System32dsccoreconfprov.dll
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit counterpart may be under:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
%WINDIR%SysWOW64dsccoreconfprov.dll
Windows uses architecture redirection, so a 32-bit process may access SysWOW64 while a 64-bit process uses System32. Do not copy a file from one directory into the other.
Open PowerShell and run:
$paths = @(
"$env:windirSystem32dsccoreconfprov.dll",
"$env:windirSysWOW64dsccoreconfprov.dll"
)
Get-Item $paths -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object FullName, Length,
@{Name='FileVersion';Expression={$_.VersionInfo.FileVersion}},
@{Name='Company';Expression={$_.VersionInfo.CompanyName}}
Check the results as follows:
- The path should be inside the Windows directory.
- The company information should identify Microsoft for a genuine system copy.
- A missing result does not prove that DSC is completely unavailable.
- Do not treat a file size or version from an older Windows release as a required value for Windows 10 or 11.
To check the digital signature, right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, select the signature, and choose Details. Windows should report that the digital signature is valid.
You can also inspect it in PowerShell:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32dsccoreconfprov.dll"
If the file is unsigned, stored in a user or application folder, or has an implausible publisher, do not restore it from an unknown source. Run a full Windows Security scan.

A file can be present while its DSC or WMI registration is damaged.
Open PowerShell as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
PowerShell. - Right-click Windows PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
Get-DscResource
Then query the DSC namespace:
Get-CimClass -Namespace root/Microsoft/Windows/DesiredStateConfiguration
A result confirms that PowerShell can access the relevant DSC registration. A missing result does not by itself prove that the DLL is absent. WMI, permissions, architecture, or provider registration may be damaged.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine response. It is a COM registration utility for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Microsoft documents its purpose in the regsvr32 command reference. There is no general Microsoft repair procedure requiring users to register dsccoreconfprov.dll.
Fix 4: Repair WMF on older Windows systems
Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, and corresponding Windows Server releases can have an incomplete or damaged Windows Management Framework installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft’s WMF 5.1 Download Center provides packages for supported older systems. The relevant package names include:
Win8.1-KB3191564-x86.msuWin8.1AndW2K12R2-KB3191564-x64.msuWin7-KB3191566-x86.zipWin7AndW2K8R2-KB3191566-x64.zip
Before installing:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
winver. - Record the Windows edition and release.
- Check whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit in Settings → System → About → System type.
- Download only the package matching the operating system and architecture.
- Install the package using Microsoft’s instructions.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
Get-DscResourceagain.
WMF 5.1 requires .NET Framework 4.5 or later. Do not install a legacy WMF package on a system for which it is not intended.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a false detection or after the file has been altered.
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
dsccoreconfprov.dll. - Note the detected path and publisher.
- Restore it only if the path is a normal Windows directory and the file has a valid Microsoft signature.
- Restart Windows and run DISM followed by SFC.
Do not restore a file simply because its name matches. If it is outside %WINDIR%, unsigned, or associated with another suspicious detection, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Microsoft describes the process in its Defender quarantine guidance.

Fix 6: Repair the application that triggers the error
Although the DLL is a Windows DSC component, a third-party management product may be the process that exposes the failure. If only one application reports the message, repair Windows first, then repair that application.

- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Restart the application.
If Repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall the product using the developer’s official installer. This is especially important if the application keeps a private copy of a component or depends on its own DSC integration. Microsoft documents supported application repair options in Repair apps and programs in Windows.
Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a graphics driver will repair this specific Windows DSC provider. Those packages are not the normal fix for a protected DSC system file.

If the problem began immediately after a Windows update, rollback, cleanup utility, driver installation, or other system change, System Restore may return the provider and its registration to an earlier working state.

- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Select OK.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Next, review the affected changes, and select Finish.
- Restart and test DSC again.
System Restore does not remove personal documents, but it can undo applications, drivers, and system changes made after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s procedure is documented in System Restore.
Drivers and Device Manager
A driver is not the normal owner of dsccoreconfprov.dll. Update a driver only when the event log identifies a related device or when the failure began with a specific driver change.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failing operation.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver only when the evidence points to that driver.
Outbyte Driver Updater can avoid guessing which of many drivers is stale by showing its scan results. The free scan identifies findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows DSC.
Why downloading the DLL is the wrong repair
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the Windows component store. Copying a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or a WMI directory can also leave provider registration and dependencies broken.
The safe sources are Windows servicing, Microsoft’s supported Windows packages, Windows Update, System Restore, or the official installer for the application that triggered the error. Never copy an x86 file into a 64-bit component location, and never copy a SysWOW64 file into System32.
If the error remains
Record the information below before escalating:
- The exact error text
- The executable that displays it
- Whether the failure occurs in PowerShell, DSC, WMI, or one application
- The output of
winver - The system architecture
- The file path, signature, and version, if a copy exists
- The relevant Event Viewer entry under Windows Logs → Application or System
- The update, rollback, cleanup, antivirus event, or installation that preceded the failure
If DISM and SFC complete without resolving the problem, use the matching WMF repair path on legacy Windows, repair or reinstall the affected application, try System Restore, or perform an in-place Windows repair. Persistent WMI or DSC registration failures may require Windows servicing beyond simply replacing a file.
FAQ
Is dsccoreconfprov.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows DSC component. Location and signature matter: a copy outside the Windows directory, an unsigned copy, or an implausible publisher should be treated as suspicious until scanned and verified.
Is this a game DLL?
No evidence identifies it as a game dependency. It is associated with Windows PowerShell DSC and its WMI/CIM provider.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No, not routinely. regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points, not for every missing or unloadable DLL.
Which version should I download?
Do not download a standalone version. Older Microsoft package records document specific versions, but there is no single verified version or size that applies to every Windows 10 and Windows 11 build.
What if the file exists but the message says it cannot be found?
The missing item may be a dependency, or DSC/WMI registration may be damaged. Check the event log, run the DSC and CIM commands above, and repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC.
