mtfserver.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Microsoft IME and the Windows text-input system. If mtfserver.dll is missing or cannot load, repair Windows and the affected language component instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program reports the error. Messages involving
ChsIME.exe,imebroker.exe, Microsoft IME, or typing indicators point to Windows input rather than a game runtime. - Whether the error appears at startup, when switching keyboard layouts, or only inside one application.
- Whether you recently installed a Windows update, changed language settings, removed a language pack, ran a cleanup utility, or restored files after malware removal.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not use architecture guesses to copy files between
System32andSysWOW64. - Whether
C:WindowsSystem32mtfserver.dllexists. The normal location is commonlyC:WindowsSystem32, although Windows builds and installations can differ.
Microsoft describes IMEs as built-in Windows components for entering Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other complex scripts. mtfserver.dll is part of that input infrastructure, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or ordinary game dependency. Microsoft’s IME documentation explains how these components fit into Windows.
What the error messages mean
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because mtfserver.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting mtfserver.dll.”
- “Error loading mtfserver.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mtfserver.dll was not found.”
- “mtfserver.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader messages. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mtfserver.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency, or the DLL may be corrupt, incompatible, or failing an integrity check.
A Microsoft Q&A incident involving ChsIME.exe and imebroker.exe also identified mtfserver.dll as the faulting module. That is consistent with an IME or text-input failure, not a missing game runtime.

Fix 1: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
This is the best first repair when the file is missing from System32, several Windows features are malfunctioning, or the error appeared after an interrupted update.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and replace protected system files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates.
- Restart again if Windows requests it.
Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC when protected Windows files are missing or damaged. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker repair procedure if either command reports an error.
Success means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Test typing, the affected keyboard layout, and the application that displayed the message.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the repair still fails, continue to the language-pack and recovery steps below rather than copying a DLL from another PC.
Running DISM and SFC manually means tracking which command changed the system and repeating repairs when Windows servicing is unclear. Outbyte PC Repair provides a scan that shows what it identifies, while repair features require the full version; it is optional, and supported Windows servicing remains the correct path for a protected system file.
Fix 2: Reinstall the affected language and IME
Use this fix when the error affects Chinese, Japanese, Korean, another installed input method, or began after changing language settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the affected language under Preferred languages.
- Select the language’s More button, then choose Language options.
- Check the installed language features, keyboard layouts, and handwriting or speech components relevant to your setup.
- If the language installation appears incomplete, remove the language from Language & region only if you are comfortable adding it back.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Select Add a language.
- Search for and select the language.
- Keep Language pack selected and install the required keyboard or input method.
- Restart Windows and test the input switcher.
Microsoft provides the supported steps for managing language and keyboard settings. Language packs and input layouts are delivered through Windows settings and Windows Update, not through a generic DLL redistributable.

If only one keyboard layout is broken, remove that layout under the language’s options and add it again without removing the entire language. If the language cannot install, repair Windows Update first, check available disk space, and run DISM and SFC again.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged or falsely detected Windows component. Do not assume that every detection is malware, and do not disable protection to install a downloaded DLL.
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections involving
mtfserver.dllor Microsoft IME. - Inspect the detected path, publisher, and detection details.
- Restore the file only if Windows Security identifies it as a legitimate Microsoft-signed system file and the detection is demonstrably a false positive.
- Run a Full scan.
- If the computer may have been infected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
Microsoft notes that malicious third-party IMEs can be blocked or removed by Windows Defender. If malware was involved, repairing Windows from a trusted source is safer than importing a file from another computer.
Fix 4: Check the input and keyboard device drivers
A keyboard driver does not normally provide mtfserver.dll, so driver repair is not the primary solution. It is useful when the problem affects a physical keyboard, language switching, or a USB or Bluetooth input device at the same time.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected keyboard and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Also expand Human Interface Devices and check for warning icons.
- For a device that stopped working after an update, open Properties > Driver and check whether Roll Back Driver is available.
- If Windows cannot find a driver, obtain it from the keyboard or computer manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the keyboard and IME.
Avoid forcing a 32-bit driver onto a 64-bit installation, or installing an unrelated keyboard package because its name mentions input. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver versions and show what it identifies, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it does not replace DISM, SFC, or the official keyboard manufacturer’s package.
Fix 5: Repair Windows after an update failure
If the error began immediately after Windows Update, first restart the PC and check Settings > Windows Update for a pending completion, failed update, or required restart.
On supported Windows 11 installations, use the built-in repair reinstall:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Restart when Windows finishes.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows installation and update configuration. See Microsoft’s Windows Update repair reinstall instructions.

If the option is unavailable, use Settings > System > Recovery > Recovery options to review other supported choices. Back up important files before any major recovery operation.
Fix 6: Use System Restore or an in-place repair
Use System Restore when mtfserver.dll worked previously and a suitable restore point was created before the failure.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the IME problem.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal files. It does not guarantee that every application or language package will be restored. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guide.
If System Restore cannot repair the issue, perform an in-place Windows installation using official installation media. Back up your files first, use installation media matching the installed Windows edition and language, and choose the option to keep personal files and apps when offered. Microsoft’s Windows installation-media guidance explains the supported process.
Do not download or register mtfserver.dll manually
Random DLL download sites are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or be modified. A replacement may also leave the damaged component store or language installation untouched.
Do not copy an arbitrary file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder. Do not copy it from another computer unless a qualified servicing procedure has established that the source has the identical Windows build, edition, architecture, and language.
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. Microsoft documents it for registering DLLs that expose the appropriate COM registration entry points. A Windows input component does not become healthy merely because regsvr32 accepts a command, and forcing registration can create a misleading error or change unrelated settings. Use Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation only when a specific Microsoft or application support procedure requires it.

An existing file can still be corrupt, incompatible, or blocked by a missing dependency.
Check these items in order:
- Right-click
C:WindowsSystem32mtfserver.dll, select Properties, and review the Digital Signatures tab if present. - Run DISM and SFC even if the file exists.
- Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application for the faulting process and module.
- Open Reliability Monitor by searching for View reliability history and inspect the first failure.
- Note whether the faulting process is
ChsIME.exe,imebroker.exe, another Windows input process, or an unrelated application. - Test another Windows user profile. If typing works there, the original profile’s language or input configuration may be damaged.
- Do not force a 32-bit or 64-bit substitute into
System32orSysWOW64. - If the machine was recently infected, prefer Defender Offline and an in-place repair over importing a DLL.
FAQ
Is mtfserver.dll safe?
It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows DLL associated with Microsoft IME and text-input infrastructure. The path, digital signature, and detection details still matter. A file with the same name outside the normal Windows component locations deserves investigation.
Is it part of Windows or a separate runtime?
It is associated with Windows IME, which ships as part of Windows input functionality. It is not a separately installed Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game runtime file.
Should I reinstall Microsoft IME?
If the error started after a language change or affects one input method, reinstalling the affected language and keyboard layout is appropriate. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC when the file is missing or multiple Windows features fail.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?
The loader may be reporting a missing dependency, damaged file, incompatible build, or failed integrity check. The message does not prove that mtfserver.dll is the only problem.
Will registering it with regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs designed for COM registration, not as a general-purpose repair for protected Windows system components.
What if the error names a game or another application?
First identify whether the application is merely triggering Windows input. If the error occurs only in one program after Windows repair, update or reinstall that program from its official installer. Do not assume the application should ship its own copy of a Windows IME component.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Use Windows Update repair reinstall, System Restore, or an in-place installation when DISM, SFC, language repair, and security checks cannot restore the component. Back up first and use official Microsoft recovery media.
