- “The program can’t start because tabbtn.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because tabbtn.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading tabbtn.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting tabbtn.dll.”
- “tabbtn.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The tabbtn.dll file is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Microsoft Tablet PC Buttons Component. It is normally part of Windows, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, .NET installation, or game-specific file.
The 60-second answer
Do not download tabbtn.dll from a random DLL website and do not begin with regsvr32.
The normal location is:
C:WindowsSystem32tabbtn.dll
Windows Explorer and Tablet PC-related functionality may load it. Public Windows inventories show the component in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11 systems, although the exact file version depends on the Windows release, architecture, edition, and installed updates. You can compare the documented Windows file identity with this Windows file inventory.

What causes a tabbtn.dll error
A missing filename does not always mean that the DLL itself is the root cause. Windows may be reporting a damaged dependency or an inconsistent component store.
Common causes include:
- A protected Windows file was corrupted or removed.
- An interrupted Windows update left the component store damaged.
- Disk errors or a sudden shutdown damaged system files.
- Cleanup or security software quarantined the file.
- Malware altered or replaced a Windows component.
- A Windows upgrade did not complete correctly.
- A 32-bit or 64-bit process is loading an incompatible copy.
- A program is failing while loading a dependency used by
tabbtn.dll.
The phrase “specified module could not be found” is especially misleading. It can mean that tabbtn.dll is absent, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is unavailable.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair protected files
This is the best first repair when the error appears during startup, in File Explorer, or across more than one application.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
- Test the action that previously produced the error.
If the error remains, repair the Windows image and protected files.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft documents this order because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for replacing damaged protected files. The official procedure is available in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
A successful result normally says that SFC found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the original error disappears after the restart, no manual DLL replacement is needed.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repair steps and cannot tell what changed; its free scan identifies reported issues, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the built-in repair path.
If DISM reports that the source files could not be found
First confirm that the computer is online and that Windows Update is working. Restart, check for updates again, and rerun DISM.
If it still fails, use a repair source that matches the installed Windows version and architecture:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a suitable Windows installation source. Do not use an arbitrary folder from another PC. Microsoft explains the requirements in its Windows image repair documentation.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test again.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have removed a file it considered suspicious. Do not restore a file solely because its name is tabbtn.dll. A malicious file can use the same filename.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open any detection related to
tabbtn.dll. - Check the original path, detection details, and action taken.
- If the file is confirmed to be the genuine Microsoft file from the expected Windows location, follow Windows Security’s restore option.
- If the detection is unclear, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
If malware may be involved, choose Scan options, run a Full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Antivirus offline scan when appropriate. Microsoft describes the available actions in Protection history.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After dealing with the detection, run DISM and SFC again. Restoring a quarantined file without repairing the underlying system may leave Windows inconsistent.
Fix 3: Check the file path, signature, and architecture
If tabbtn.dll exists, do not replace it just because its size or version differs from a result found online. Windows file versions vary by release, update level, edition, and architecture.
Check the expected path
- Press Windows + E.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Search for
tabbtn.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
A genuine Windows copy should be associated with Microsoft and should normally be in the Windows system directory. A copy inside a random application folder, Downloads, or a temporary directory deserves additional investigation.
Understand 32-bit and 64-bit copies
A 32-bit DLL and a 64-bit DLL are not interchangeable. On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system components normally use System32, while 32-bit system components are handled through Windows redirection and commonly appear under SysWOW64.
Do not manually copy a DLL between these folders. Do not replace a current file with an older file because the size appears similar. DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or matching Windows installation media can select the correct system copy.
Fix 4: Repair the affected Windows program or feature
If the error appears only when opening a particular older program, identify the executable named in the message. A program may be loading Windows components incorrectly, or it may have its own damaged files.
Try the following:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that the program’s local settings can be recreated.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Reinstall it only from the publisher’s official installer.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because tabbtn.dll is mentioned. Those packages are separate technologies. Install or repair one only when the error also identifies that dependency or the affected program’s official documentation requires it.

Fix 5: Check tablet and hardware drivers
tabbtn.dll is associated with Windows Tablet PC and hardware-button functionality. A driver problem can trigger a failure in the component that loads it, although a driver update will not replace a missing protected Windows DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices, System devices, and any tablet-related category.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Select the Driver tab and choose Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available. For a manufacturer-specific tablet or button device, use the computer maker’s official support page and select the exact model.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help identify stale drivers when you are checking several device categories manually; its free scan shows reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace DISM or SFC for a damaged Windows component.
Fix 6: Use System Restore
Use System Restore when the error began after an update, cleanup operation, driver change, or software installation and a restore point exists from before the failure.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings, but it does not normally remove personal documents. Review the affected-program list before confirming. Microsoft provides additional guidance in its System Restore documentation.
If Windows will not boot, open Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
Fix 7: Reinstall the current Windows version or perform a repair install
If DISM cannot repair the component store, SFC cannot repair tabbtn.dll, and System Restore does not help, use a Windows repair installation.
On supported Windows 11 systems, check:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Look for Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. Microsoft documents it on the page about reinstalling the current Windows version.
If that option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media and choose Keep personal files and apps during an in-place installation. Back up important files first and confirm that the media matches the installed Windows edition and architecture.
Why you should not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically for COM or ActiveX components.
Running this command is not a routine fix:
regsvr32 tabbtn.dll
It may produce an error because the file is not intended to be registered that way. It also cannot recreate a missing Windows component or repair the component store. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is tabbtn.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with the same name in an unexpected folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, or flagged by security software must be investigated rather than automatically trusted.
Is tabbtn.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. It is associated with Windows Tablet PC buttons and related system functionality. Installing those runtimes is not the normal solution.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I download a replacement DLL?
Do not use random DLL download sites. The file may have the wrong Windows version, architecture, signature, or dependencies, and it may contain malware. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or an in-place repair installation.
Does Windows 11 contain the same file version as Windows 10?
Not necessarily. File versions vary with the Windows release, architecture, edition, and servicing level. A different version number or file size does not by itself prove that a file is wrong.
What if SFC says it found no integrity violations?
The message may be caused by a dependency, a program-specific loading problem, or an incorrect path rather than a damaged system file. Check the exact executable named in the error, review Event Viewer, inspect the DLL path, and repair the affected application.
What if Windows will not boot?
Run SFC offline from Windows Recovery Environment using the appropriate /OFFBOOTDIR and /OFFWINDIR options, or use System Restore and an in-place repair installation when necessary.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I copy tabbtn.dll from another computer?
Only as a carefully verified last-resort repair using closely matching Windows installation media, not by copying from a friend’s PC. The safer approach is to let DISM or SFC restore the correct file for the installed build.
