lxpjlmw.dll is a printer-driver component, not a Visual C++ runtime or a general application DLL. Its reported description is “Lexmark PJL Modification Filter,” and Windows may show that it is missing, corrupt, or unable to load when a printer package is incomplete or damaged.
The safest repair is to remove the affected printer, restart Windows, and install it again through Windows or the printer manufacturer’s current driver package. Do not download an isolated copy of lxpjlmw.dll from a random DLL website.
What lxpjlmw.dll does
lxpjlmw.dll is associated with the PCL/PJL family of printer-driver components. PCL printer packages use INF files and supporting modules to provide printer-specific functions; this DLL is not intended to be installed like a standalone application library.
Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 update manifests include the file with Windows printing components alongside Lexmark PCL/PJL driver files:

These records confirm that the file was distributed through Windows printer support at that time. They do not prove that the same file, version, or size exists in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
The Lexmark-derived name also does not prove that a Lexmark application is installed. Printer-driver packages can contain vendor-specific component names, including packages installed on computers that do not currently use a Lexmark-branded printer.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the affected printer
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the best first fix when the error appears after printing stopped working, a printer was removed, or a driver update failed.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the printer related to the error.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart the computer.
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for the printer.
- Select the printer and follow the installation prompts.
If Windows does not find it, select Add manually. Choose the method that matches your printer connection, such as a network address, shared printer, or local port. When Windows offers to search Windows Update for printer drivers, allow it to do so.
If the printer manufacturer provides a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 package, download that package only from the manufacturer’s official support page. Install the complete package rather than copying a single DLL. A complete package includes the INF file, catalog, dependent files, and the correct architecture.
Microsoft’s current printer guidance also recommends removing the printer, adding it again, updating its driver, and checking the print spooler when connection or printing problems continue.
Check Device Manager if the printer remains broken
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers if the printer is connected by USB.
- Look for the printer or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after the update.
If Device Manager reports that the best driver is already installed but the error remains, return to Printers & scanners, remove the printer, restart, and install the complete current package again.

How to tell it worked: print a Windows test page from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → your printer → Printer properties → Print Test Page. The original program should also start without the DLL message.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a printer component after an update or driver installation. Check the detection before reinstalling or restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection that names
lxpjlmw.dllor the printer package. - Check the original file path, detection name, and publisher information.
Restore or allow the file only if you can verify that it came from the legitimate printer installation and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the computer.
If the detection is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the printer from Windows Update or the manufacturer’s official package instead. After reinstalling, run a full Windows Security scan.

Fix 3: Repair Windows component and system files
Time needed: 15–40 minutes
Use this fix when several Windows components are failing, the error began after an interrupted update, or reinstalling the printer did not restore its files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands finish.
DISM normally uses Windows Update as its repair source. If Windows Update is unavailable and you have a matching Windows installation source, Microsoft documents this form:

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the correct source path. Do not use an unrelated Windows release as the repair source.

When this DLL belongs to a printer package, repairing or reinstalling that package is still the definitive fix.
How to tell it worked: SFC reports that it did not find integrity violations or repaired corrupted files, and the original DLL error disappears after restarting. If SFC says it could not repair some files, repeat the printer reinstall and then review the CBS log or continue with the advanced diagnosis below.
Fix 4: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus restart time
A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave printer components out of sync.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
On older Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 systems, Microsoft’s update manifests show that lxpjlmw.dll could arrive through Windows servicing. Do not extract an old Windows 8 copy and place it manually into a newer Windows installation. The correct file must match the operating system, printer package, and architecture.
How to tell it worked: Windows Update completes without an installation error, the printer is still installed, and the application no longer reports lxpjlmw.dll.
Fix 5: Check optional Windows printing features
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
This step is useful when printing components were disabled or removed from Windows.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- In Windows Features, look for Print and Document Services.
- Expand it if necessary.
- Enable only the printing feature required by your setup, such as Internet Printing Client or LPD Print Service.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable every feature merely because the DLL error names printing. A missing printer-driver file is normally repaired by reinstalling the printer package, not by turning on unrelated Windows features.

How to tell it worked: the required print feature remains enabled, the printer can be added again, and the original program loads without the error.
Fix 6: Identify the program and its dependency
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that lxpjlmw.dll itself is absent. The DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, or a program may be loading the wrong architecture.
First note the exact message and the program that displays it. Ask:
- Does it appear when Windows starts, when printing, or when one application opens?
- Did printing fail immediately beforehand?
- Was a printer or driver recently removed?
- Did the problem begin after a Windows update or security detection?
If no printer is installed and the error appears during unrelated software startup, the program may contain a stale reference to an old printer package. Repair or reinstall the application that displays the message, but do not assume a particular game, Adobe product, or other application is responsible without identifying it first.
You can also inspect Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the DLL message appeared.
- Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and event details.
Check the printer manufacturer’s installation or setup logs if the event identifies a printer package. If the error affects only one Windows account, test the same action from another user profile. If multiple system components fail, return to DISM and SFC and check the disk for broader corruption.
Do not copy the DLL or run regsvr32
Avoid downloading lxpjlmw.dll from DLL download sites sites. A file from an unknown source may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to the wrong Windows release, or omit dependencies. Even a genuine-looking file may not match the signed printer package and often will not repair the underlying broken reference.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder. Manual copying can create version conflicts and bypass the driver’s normal signing and installation process.

regsvr32 is also not a routine fix here. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. lxpjlmw.dll is documented as a printer-driver module, not as a COM library that needs self-registration. Running commands such as these is therefore unlikely to help:
regsvr32 lxpjlmw.dll
regsvr32 /u lxpjlmw.dll
If Windows says that the entry point was not found, that result supports stopping rather than trying more registration commands.

A 32-bit printer component is not interchangeable with a 64-bit component. The confirmed Windows 8 records have separate x86 and x64 builds with different sizes, so architecture must match the driver and application environment.
FAQ
Is lxpjlmw.dll a virus?
The filename alone cannot establish that. It is a documented printer-driver component in Microsoft’s Windows 8-era printer update manifests. If your antivirus detected a copy, inspect its original path, publisher, and quarantine record before restoring it.
Is lxpjlmw.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Microsoft’s public records confirm the file in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 printer support. They do not establish that the same file is present in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 release. On modern Windows, use the current printer installation and driver package rather than an old extracted copy.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?

Should I register it with regsvr32?
Normally, no. This is a printer-driver filter, not a documented COM or ActiveX library requiring self-registration.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The error may identify a missing dependency rather than the named DLL, or the calling program may be loading an incompatible architecture. Identify the calling executable in Event Viewer and repair the associated printer package or application.
What if I do not have a printer installed?
Find the program that displays the message first. A stale printer reference can remain in an application or old driver package even when no printer is currently configured. Remove obsolete printer software, then repair the program that makes the reference.
