Before changing Windows, identify the game or program that shows the error.
- Note the exact message: missing, not found, could not be loaded, or not designed to run on Windows.
- Check whether it began after a reinstall, update, cleanup, antivirus detection, disk problem, or mod installation.
- Look in the game’s installation folder for
nvdxtlibrary.dll. - Check whether the executable is 32-bit or 64-bit. The game’s architecture determines which copy it needs, not simply whether Windows is 64-bit.
- Do not copy the file to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not run
regsvr32 nvdxtlibrary.dll. - Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website.
The safest repair is normally to verify or reinstall the game that installed the file.
What is nvdxtlibrary.dll?
nvdxtlibrary.dll is a game-local library associated with older CryENGINE and Crytek-based Windows games. The nv prefix does not mean that it is an NVIDIA display-driver file. It is not a Windows component, DirectX redistributable file, or standard Visual C++ runtime.
Known game manifests place it in locations such as:

| Crysis 3 Remastered | Bin64nvDXTLibrary.dll |
| Ryse: Son of Rome | Bin64nvDXTLibrary.dll |
| Homefront: The Revolution | Bin64nvDXTLibrary.dll |
| Early Kingdom Come: Deliverance builds | CryENGINE-style game directory |
The file has been indexed in both 32-bit and 64-bit forms. The commonly reported metadata shows approximately 0.33 MB for the 32-bit version and 0.45 MB for the 64-bit version, with version information displayed as 0.0.0.0. That catalogue metadata is not an official publisher version record.
CryENGINE documentation also indicates that the related binaries and dependencies were later removed after the code was removed from the renderer. This is another reason not to assume that every CryENGINE game needs the file.
What the error messages mean
“The program can’t start because nvdxtlibrary.dll is missing”
The file is absent from the game directory or another required file was removed during installation, cleanup, quarantine, or an update.
“The code execution cannot proceed because nvdxtlibrary.dll was not found”
Windows could not find the library in the application’s expected search locations. For this file, the game directory is the important location.
“Error loading nvdxtlibrary.dll. The specified module could not be found”
This wording is ambiguous. It can mean that nvdxtlibrary.dll itself is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing.
“The procedure entry point could not be located”
The file may be the wrong build, damaged, or incompatible with the executable. A DLL copied from another game or edition commonly causes this result.
“nvdxtlibrary.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This usually points to corruption, an incorrect architecture, or an incompatible binary. It does not mean that Windows needs a generic replacement in a system folder.
Fix 1: Verify the game files
This is the first repair because it restores the correct file for the installed game and edition.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
Steam may replace missing or damaged files, including a game-local DLL. If the game still fails, restart Windows and try once more.
Other launchers
Open the game’s original launcher and look for a command named Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or Check files. The wording differs between launchers, but the purpose is the same.
Do not copy a file from another installation, a remastered edition, a retail disc, a mod package, or a different game. A 32-bit game needs its 32-bit library, while a 64-bit build needs its 64-bit library.
If verification reports that files are missing but cannot restore them:
Recommended Free Tools
- Back up saves and configuration files if they are stored in the game folder.
- Uninstall the game through its launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the game again from its original launcher or store.
- Run the game without mods before restoring custom files.
A clean reinstall is the definitive fix when the game installation is incomplete or mixed between editions.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a game file. Do not immediately restore it just because the filename appears in an error.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry that names the affected game or
nvdxtlibrary.dll. - Check the detected file’s path and source.
- If the file came from an official, clean game installation, use the launcher’s verification or reinstall function first.
Only restore a quarantined file after confirming that its source is trustworthy and that the detection is a false positive. Restoring a malicious file can expose the computer. If the file disappears again after verification, run a full security scan and investigate the game installation, mods, and recently installed software.

Do not blindly create an antivirus exclusion for the game folder.
Fix 3: Repair missing dependencies
A message saying that the specified module could not be found can refer to a dependency rather than nvdxtlibrary.dll itself.
Install the game’s bundled prerequisites
Look inside the game folder for directories named Redist, Support, CommonRedist, or similar. Run the included prerequisite installers, then restart Windows.
Install legacy DirectX components
Older games may require side-by-side DirectX components that are not included in the current Windows installation.
- Download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Microsoft.
- Run
dxwebsetup.exe. - Accept the license terms.
- Allow it to install missing legacy components.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game again.
This package does not install nvdxtlibrary.dll. It only repairs possible DirectX dependencies.
Repair Visual C++ runtimes
A 32-bit game needs the x86 Visual C++ redistributable even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit game may need the x64 package.
- Download the current supported Visual C++ redistributables from Microsoft.
- Install
vc_redist.x86.exefor 32-bit games. - Install
vc_redist.x64.exefor 64-bit games. - If an installer is already present, choose Repair when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
Older games can still require older Visual C++ packages, so install prerequisites supplied with the game when available. Installing Visual C++ does not replace a damaged game-local DLL.
If the next error names another missing DLL, record that filename. It may identify the missing dependency more clearly than the original nvdxtlibrary.dll message.
Fix 4: Check the game path and architecture
A launcher can point to an incomplete or incorrect installation after a drive move, update, or reinstall.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the launcher.
- Open the game’s properties or installation management page.
- Confirm the displayed install path.
- Browse to that folder in File Explorer.
- Check for
Bin32nvDXTLibrary.dllorBin64nvDXTLibrary.dll, depending on the game build. - Start the game from the launcher rather than an old desktop shortcut.
- Remove unofficial mods temporarily.
- Verify the files again.
Do not place a 64-bit DLL in a 32-bit game directory or the reverse. Do not combine files from the original game and remastered versions. If the expected file is present but the loader still rejects it, verification or a clean reinstall is safer than replacing that single file.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components
Use this step when several unrelated programs are failing, Windows reports broader corruption, or the problem began after a system failure. It normally will not restore nvdxtlibrary.dll, because this is a game-local file rather than a protected Windows system file.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
- Verify the game files again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports an error, record the exact message and repair Windows before repeating the game installation.
If you are tired of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the game that owns this DLL.

nvdxtlibrary.dll is not supplied by the NVIDIA display driver simply because its name starts with nv. Do not reinstall graphics drivers as the first response to this particular missing-file message.
Consider a driver repair only if the game also reports graphics initialization failures, crashes after a driver change, or displays rendering errors.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a recent driver-related failure, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if that button is available.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show reported driver issues; driver installation through its full version is optional, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive repair for this game-local DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 does not fix this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX or COM components.
There is no evidence that nvdxtlibrary.dll is a COM or ActiveX server. Running this command is therefore inappropriate:
regsvr32 nvdxtlibrary.dll
It may return an entry-point or registration error, and it will not make a normal game dependency usable. A missing game DLL should be restored by repairing the game installation, not registered globally.
Do not copy the file into System32
Copying nvdxtlibrary.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not a correct repair.
The game normally loads its private library from the application directory. Global copies can create version conflicts and increase DLL search-path and hijacking risks. They also do not fix a missing dependency beside the game executable.
Random DLL download sites add further risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- The build may belong to another game or edition.
- Required exports may not match the executable.
- The download may hide the actual cause, such as quarantine or disk corruption.
There is no verified official standalone nvdxtlibrary.dll download. Use the original game launcher, the game’s bundled prerequisites, and Microsoft’s official DirectX, Visual C++, and Windows repair packages instead.
If the error returns immediately after repair
Work through this checklist:
- Check Windows Security Protection history again.
- Confirm the launcher is using the intended installation path.
- Inspect the expected
Bin32orBin64directory. - Remove mods and unofficial patches.
- Install the game’s bundled prerequisites.
- Check whether the next error names a different missing dependency.
- Test the disk if files repeatedly disappear or become corrupted.
- Check folder permissions and available storage.
- Try a clean installation on a healthy drive.
- Contact the game publisher if an unmodified official installation still fails.
If several applications began failing after a recent driver, update, or system change, use System Restore:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs without normally removing personal files, but it does not replace the need to repair the game installation.
FAQ
Is nvdxtlibrary.dll an NVIDIA driver?
No. The filename prefix is not proof of ownership. This is a game-local component associated with particular CryENGINE-era games.
Is it part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. Windows does not normally provide this DLL as a system component.
Should I download it separately?
No standalone official download has been verified. Restore it through the affected game’s launcher or reinstall that game.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which version do I need?
Use the version supplied with the game. Older 32-bit builds can use Bin32, while newer 64-bit builds can use Bin64. Windows being 64-bit does not automatically mean the game needs the 64-bit DLL.
Will DirectX or Visual C++ install the file?
No. Those packages can repair dependencies that the game may need, but they do not replace nvdxtlibrary.dll.
Should I run SFC and DISM first?
Only when Windows itself appears damaged or multiple unrelated applications fail. For this file, verify or reinstall the game first.
Why does verification succeed but the game still fail?
The file may be present but incompatible, a dependency may be missing, antivirus may remove it again, or the launcher may be starting a different installation. Check the path, architecture, prerequisites, and the next loader error.
